Woolworths New Zealand

edit

Recently there was a decision to merge Woolworths New Zealand into Woolworths (New Zealand supermarket chain) due to overlapping content and to maintain consistency with other Woolworth supermarket articles: see Woolworth (disambiguation). I plan to make a start on the merger but would appreciate some guidance and support. I understand many of us would be away at the Wikimedia Conference in Wellington this weekend. Hope it goes well and take care. Andykatib (talk) 21:07, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks @Icaldonta: for organising the merger. Was busy this week with other things so didn't get round to doing it. Andykatib (talk) 20:34, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
No worries, thank you! @Andykatib Icaldonta (talk) 22:51, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wellington task force launched

edit

A Wellington task force was launched today at Wikicon 2026 to invite volunteers to improve articles in particular categories or topic areas related to Wellington City. The initial campaign focusses on articles in the Category:Tourist attractions in Wellington City. Other campaigns will follow. Editors with an interest in topics related to Wellington City are invited to sign up on the task force project page, and then put their username against any article in the current campaign that they are willing to improve._Marshelec (talk) 01:48, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I just wanted to say that I had a really good time at Wellington WikiCon 2026. It was great to meet so many Wikipedians in person for the first time. I felt very welcome, awkward as I am. The presentations were really interesting and have inspired me. I really enjoyed the Wikizine event and am thinking of making one myself. The tours of Wellington Central Library and the national library were very exciting; I never expected to go into the underground area, which was really fun.

I think the organisers and people who made presentations should be really proud of themselves, and so should the attendees for being good people. I had a really good time. Panamitsu 23:42, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Agreed! It was brilliant to meet heaps of Wikipedians and learn from people's presentations. Well done to everyone, presenters, organisers, and attendees alike. Nice message, Panamitsu. JaumeBG (talk) 00:36, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
yes I agree thanks to everyone who came for being great, kind, and curious people over the weekend! TheLoyalOrder (talk) 01:44, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the kind words Panamitsu, it was great to have you there, we're pleased to hear you enjoyed it! Thank you too JaumeBG and TheLoyalOrder we're very glad you all came along, it's so great to get so many NZ Wikimedians together! -Sophie @ WANZ :-) Hillmenco (talk) 02:08, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
That was a fabulous WikiCon. Thank you to the organisers and attendees who made it such a great event. Meeting you in person, Panamitsu, was one of the highlights for me. Schwede66 08:35, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have extreme FOMO, would have loved to be there! David Palmer//cloventt (talk) 09:04, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm sad that I missed it (I don't even have an excuse - I live here and had very little planned for the weekend, I had just got the timing messed up and thought I was out of town!) Glad to hear it went well, will have to keep an eye out for a future event in town. Turnagra (talk) 09:05, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, that's very sad, Turnagra. We had a late registration and that person turned up on Sunday late morning! You should have joined us when you realised that you were around. Schwede66 23:25, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I have made a wikibox like I did last year if anyone wants to use it just put "{{User:TheLoyalOrder/Userbox/Wellington Wikicon 2026}}" on your userpage TheLoyalOrder (talk) 01:50, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Nice! Thank you for that! DrThneed (talk) 02:22, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Some recent COI edit requests for your perusal

edit

There are a couple of NZ edits requests open at present, and because I'm still feeling the warm fuzzies from Wellington, I've included a couple of Australian ones too, and one that relates to UK/Australia/NZ, in case anyone wants to take a look.

  1. Catherine Manchester
  2. Julia Grace
  3. TNT (magazine)
  4. Translational Research Institute (Australia)
  5. Merrelyn Emery

DrThneed (talk) 02:26, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

First one done! The second is quite a bit more involved and will need a bit of a rewrite before it can be merged in, which I don't have the energy for atm so will pass for now. nil nz 02:43, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Brilliant! Thanks for that speedy work Nil NZ. DrThneed (talk) 04:37, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Featured Article — New Zealand topic

edit

Today, AxonsArachnida's article Katipō (a New Zealand spider) has been featured on the Main Page as the Featured Article until approx. midday tomorrow. Well done, AxonsArachnida! JaumeBG (talk) 02:00, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

A fabulous article, thanks for your contributions @AxonsArachnida! Chocmilk03 (talk) 01:08, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
On a related note, I'd recommend more people get involved in the FA process. You don't need to do a full review nor be familiar with every MOS page. Simple things like fact-checking sources are important but also can be done by anyone. Traumnovelle (talk) 02:20, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

EduWiki Hub looking for NZers to serve on the EduWiki Board Election Committee

edit

The EduWiki Hub is looking for expressions of interest from members of the Aotearoa editing community who would like to serve on the EduWiki Board Election Committee. The hub is working to ensure the committee reflects the diversity of the Wikimedia education community, but they have had very limited responses so far from our region. To allow more time and encourage broader participation, they’ve extended the deadline to 15 May 2026.

The Election Committee will play an important role in supporting a transparent, fair, and well-coordinated board election process. Responsibilities will include any of the following: documentation of the electoral process on meta-wiki, overseeing aspects of the nomination and election process, supporting communication with candidates and voters, and ensuring adherence to agreed election guidelines. Sign up here. Hillmenco (talk) 00:37, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Te Pūkenga category

edit

I have a question regarding Category:Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology. Given that the current National-led coalition government has taken steps to disestablish the mega polytechnic and reinstitute the polytechnics as independent entities, should I depopulate that category? At the time of writing, Te Pūkenga consists of just five institutions: NorthTec, Tai Poutini Polytechnic, the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki, Whitireia New Zealand and Wellington Institute of Technology (About us. The Government intends for them to leave Te Pukenga by 1 January 2027. We'll also need to update Template:Vocational education in New Zealand and List of public sector organisations in New Zealand to reflect these changes. Wanted to get some advice before I proceed with the category changes. Andykatib (talk) 21:33, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I had a look at the list of central government organisations on the Public Service Commission's website and those 16 polytechnics for some reason are still listed as Crown entity subsidiaries of the New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology. Not sure if that is because the list has not been updated or whether they are still legally part of NZIST until its dissolution? Andykatib (talk) 21:44, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

FYI of ANI discussion

edit

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an ongoing point of contention across articles related to this WikiProject. The thread is Ongoing issues with Roger 8 Roger and Māori topics. Turnagra (talk) 23:04, 16 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Final decision after a lot of discussion. TLDR: "Roger 8 Roger is topic banned from Māori topics, broadly construed. This sanction may be appealed in six months." - SimonLyall (talk) 09:13, 1 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

An interesting press release from the Government came out yesterday - seems like there will be some changes made to the Copyright Act to extend the copyright for music to 70 years after publication and 70 years after death for other general works. Thoughts? applecuckoo (he/him) 20:36, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Unlikely to have any impact on Wikipedia as anything that could be affected would have had URAA restoration in 1996 anyhow. Traumnovelle (talk) 01:27, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia operates under US copyright law. The major problem is that Commons wants things to be in both US and local public domain. There's a few edge cases where that can't be met (things in the US public domain which are still under copyright here), and that will increase. And it will mean that kiwis can't contribute to wikisource for e.g. the works of Ngaio Marsh, which would come out of US copyright around the same time as they would have become NZ-PD.
