Since the World Cup more or less convincingly establishes supermacy in cricket the need of Champions Trophy is now probably only of monetary interest for ICC and the hosting board

Another "Champions Trophy"

There was a "Champions Trophy" ODI series which ran under various sponsored titles (eg (Singer-Akai Champions Trophy) in Sharjah most years from 1986-87 to 2000-01. Just mentioning it here to avoid any confusion with the ICC CT competition. Loganberry (Talk)

Wickets Discrepancy

Article needs to make some attempt at explaining why this tournament exists

This article needs to make some attempt at explaining why this tournament exists (given that there's already an ODI World Cup), preferably backed by citations from reliable sources. After seeing the tournament reported in the news, I came here looking for an answer to this question, and was disappointed not to find one (other than the suggestion in the Talk page that it was just an ICC cash cow - which could only appear in the article if it were backed by reliable citations, and probably also 'balanced' by official justifications for the tournament for NPOV reasons). I suppose I could go looking for such citations myself, but I think that's really a job for some editor who's a great deal more interested in cricket than me, especially as the article relates to a soon-to-be-defunct tournament, and one which has not involved lesser cricketing nations (such as my own Ireland). Most successful tram

One question should India be listed with Australia because India won the trophy in 2002 along with Sri Lanka and that gives it like 1 1/2 titles? I'm not adding 1.5 titles but I think only Australia should be listed there. Bingobro (talk) 09:59, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

The ICC Champions Trophy, formerly called the ICC KnockOut Trophy, is a quadrennial cricket tournament organised by the International Cricket Council played in the One Day International format. India is the winner of the 2025 edition.

Inaugurated in 1998, the ICC conceived the idea of the Champions Trophy – a short cricket tournament to raise funds for the development of the game in non-test playing countries. It can be compared to FIFA Confederations Cup in football. It remains as one of the ICC events that has the same format as that of another big cricketing event, in this case One Day International like the Cricket World Cup.

The first Champions Trophy was organised in Bangladesh in June 1998, with the Cricket World Cup having had existed for 23 years with six completed editions. The first two Champions Trophies were held in ICC Associate member nations – Bangladesh and Kenya, to increase the popularity of the sport in those countries and then use the funds collected for the development of their cricket. From the 2002 tournament onwards, hosting has been shared between countries under an unofficial rotation system, with six ICC members having hosted at least one match in the tournament.

The current format involves a qualification phase, which takes place in the preceding edition of the Cricket World Cup, to determine which teams qualify for the tournament phase. The top eight ranked teams in the World Cup (including the hosts of the Champions Trophy) secure a berth for the tournament. A total of thirteen teams have competed in the 8 editions of the tournament, with eight teams competing in the 2017 tournament. India is the most successful team winning the tournament thrice, whereas Australia won twice while South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan have won it once each.   @StAnselm: here's the Google Trends report comparing the total search volume for the event (blue) with the search terms "Champions Trophy" (red) and "ICC Champions Trophy" (yellow). It shows that the former is the most commonly searched term for the event. Vestrian24Bio 16:30, 25 May 2026 (UTC)

  Google Trends is OK for primary topic, but not for commone name. What people search for (which is often abbreviated) does not indicate what things are called. StAnselm (talk) 16:37, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
