Wikipedia:Requests for permissions

Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, and template editor rights, and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

Permissions

Handled here

  • Account creator (add request · view requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
  • Autopatrolled (add request · view requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
  • AutoWikiBrowser (add request · view requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the rules of use and registration requirements on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
  • Confirmed (add request · view requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
  • Event coordinator (add request · view requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
  • Extended confirmed (add request · view requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
  • File mover (add request · view requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
  • Mass message sender (add request · view requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
  • New page reviewer (add request · view requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Page mover (add request · view requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Pending changes reviewer (add request · view requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
  • Rollback (add request · view requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
  • Template editor (add request · view requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.
  • Temporary account IP viewer (add request · view requests): Temporary account IP viewers are able to view the IP address information associated with temporary accounts.

Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

Review and removal of permissions

The requests for permissions process is not used to review or remove user rights:

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight permissions are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

Process

Requestors

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting the permission.

Administrators

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

Other editors

Requests for permissions is primarily intended for editors requesting a permission for their own account. Other editors are welcome to comment if they have specific information that is relevant to that request that a patrolling administrator is unlikely to discover for themselves. Otherwise, since only administrators can effectively respond to these requests, general comments or 'clerking' by other users are rarely helpful. Non-administrators cannot "decline" to grant a request, because they're not in a position to accept it.

A limited exception to this is Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled, where third party nominations are encouraged. Other editors should still avoid offering general remarks on requests and leave the final decision to an administrator.

Autopatrolled

Hello folks! Till date, I have created about 45 mainspace articles; mostly films, web series, biographies, places of worship and a historical landmark (my most recent creation). I would love to have the Autopatrolled rights; and it might help prevent the piling up of the NPR backlog, even just by a bit. And I believe I am qualified for this. If I am judged ineligible, I would be happy to work upon myself if my shortcomings are pointed out. Thanks! BhikhariInformer (talk) 11:28, 28 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@BhikhariInformer Could you explain why you used in Basu Bati. Sohom (talk) 04:24, 30 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Although it's not equivalent to a major newspaper or journal, I used it cuz it appeared to be a specialised history publication rather than a personal blog. They publish bylined articles, and from what I could gather, the authors appear to be real people with relevant academic backgrounds. And this article contained detailed information about Basu Bati's history. If there are concerns regarding the source's reliability, I'd be grateful if you could point 'em out, as I used it in good faith and would like to improve my source evaluation. BhikhariInformer 📮 (Ping me or else I won't see it) 05:03, 30 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
{{not done}} @BhikhariInformer (CC @Sohom Datta): it's a brand website. See the very bottom of the page: "Your source for unique home decor and furnishings that blend modern design with traditional Indian craftsmanship. Responsibly sourced from over 11,000 artisans, our products reflect authenticity, sustainability, and fine craftsmanship. Discover the beauty of India with Peepul Tree." I'm sure you used the source in good faith, but this indicates to me that NPP review is still necessary. voorts (talk/contributions) 17:21, 30 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
(Non-administrator comment) @Voorts I'm sorry, but I do not really agree with your analysis of that source; Sanjana Ray is in fact an established journalist specialising in lifestyle and probably culture. While PeepulTree appears to be "Your source for unique home decor and furnishings...", I think the website for that branding and whatever is mostly peepultree.world and not livehistoryindia.com; the latter is a website where they publish well-researched articles relating to their niche. In fact, I find the piece to be a well-researched publication by a subject-matter expert, and in livehistoryindia credit, I consider it an excellent, high-quality editorial platform for history enthusiasts, students, cultural explorers, you name it. This is entirely my own opinion and I hope it helps. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 19:10, 30 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'll let another admin review it. voorts (talk/contributions) 19:38, 30 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning/day/evening my fellow Wikipedians. After 15 years, 200k+ edits and creating a lot of stuff here I think it is time to apply for Autopatrolled permission. I have created about 200 list articles and 150+ other main space articles, mostly biographies. Although I love all my children I'm especially proud of next WIR contributions:

Currently I am focussing on Wikispecies-related topics so the last 350+ 'pages' are soft redirects to Wikisecies. As you can see in the logs there haven't been any major issues. Thank you for your time. Kind regards, Mill 1 (talk) 20:17, 28 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

(Non-administrator comment) I recommended to @Mill 1 that they apply for autopatroller. They mentioned that new NPP's nominating their soft directs to deletion (which I am also guilty of doing), and it would save everyone time if they were granted autopatroller. They've created over 8000 pages, and only 72 have been deleted.
EaglesFan37 (talk) 22:13, 28 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, What is the status of my application? It has been a week already and I had to remove speedy deletion tags from new soft redirect pages yet again. I believe this was NPP-er number 5 or 6. Kind Regards,Mill 1 (talk) 17:56, 4 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

79 articles created, zero deleted. Creations look excellent. ~ A412 talk! 04:46, 4 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @A412!
Really appreciate the "creations look excellent". Wish I could say that about my cupcakes when I decide to do some baking.
Saw this nomination in my alerts and was pleasantly surprised. If others feels this user right is a good thing to have, great! If not, fine, too! Whatever helps those editors who do the diligent, and thankless, work behind the scenes works for me.

I would like to create lists of articles I might want to edit based on Regex and categories. Because of my current computing setup I will need to use JWB, which, unlike AWB, requires being on the check page for all actions, including generating lists. I do not intend to actually make any semi-automated edits until I'm more confident in my Regex skills, and am willing to make another request when that time comes. @JarJarInks: you're still under the normal requirements (at least 500 edits or 250 mainspace edits). With your use case, I can justify making an exception, but was wondering how you're getting on with Ponor's userscript instead? In solidarity, —Femke (talk) 🐦 16:54, 25 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I'm requesting permissions to edit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_Freedom_250, which has factual inaccuracies about how to watch. Namely, it is not available to watch on CBS and is exclusively available to watch on Paramount+. I can cite multiple public and official sources for this.

You can see from my confirmed email that I'm affiliated with Paramount and intend to correct the facts about how to watch the event. Justin Paramount (talk) 17:58, 3 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed

Hello, according to the result from my AE, XC would be removed "until Edittttor has made enough manual non-repetitive edits to earn the right." I have now surpassed that threshold and am requesting reinstatement. I wish to edit articles about US politicians and sometimes those pages are ECP. For transparency, there is an open AE against me, but I believe that innocent until proven guilty should apply, and I have in good faith met the requirements for reinstatement. Based on the AE archives I've looked at, it could take weeks for a resolution there and it seems punitive to extend my punishment if I have met all the requirements. Will be an opportunity for the community to see how I handle reinstatement until the request is resolved. I will make a note there that I have requested reinstatement here. Thanks! I typically patrol pages on the Portuguese Wikipedia, where I'm a self-reviewer, as I enjoy reading articles more than editing sometimes. I believe this is a useful thing to do, which is collectively helping other editors and making Wikipedia a more reliable place. And I can also help with patrolling drafts when necessary. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia and your interest in this permission. Reviewing your editing history, I'm not seeing enough experience with writing article content or engaging in deletion discussions on English Wikipedia to justify conferring permissions at this time. While creating redirects and WP:GNOMEing is helpful for the encyclopedia, it does not help demonstrate familiarity with the guidelines and policies relevant to new page reviewing.  Not done, consider reapplying once you've gotten more relevant experience. signed, Rosguill talk 00:07, 5 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I have created nine mainspace articles of start class or above quality. I have created one B-class article. I frequently participate in deletion discussions and have initiated two successful deletion discussions. I am competent at implementing the manual of style and formatting. I understand the article grading system and I have a good track record of civility and constructive editing and conversations. I am confident that I can be effective at helping to clear the new pages backlog and I would like a shot at being a new page reviewer. Would like to be able to check for signs of loutsocking on articles. I have suspicions that someone has done some very slow loutsocking on the article for Nathan Vasquez for example. Insanityclown1 (talk) 03:34, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Insanityclown1: I'm not sure how this perm would help identify LOUTSOCKing? It can compare temporary accounts to one another, which can detect when one person is operating multiple temporary accounts, but it can't connect temporary accounts to registered editors, which is what would show LOUTSOCKing. Can you please clarify? Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 04:07, 18 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps not the correct use of the term loutsocking, but what I was referring to is it appears that the same person is using multiple temporary accounts to insert the same diatribe. Insanityclown1 (talk) 04:41, 18 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding Nathan Vasquez (lawyer), this permission would not help in cases where edits are this stale/far apart. IP address information is deleted when a temporary account expires 90 days after the edit is made. -- Reconrabbit (talk) 16:35, 20 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting as an AfC/NPP reviewer learning the ropes of countervandalism and sock investigations. I've read and will act in accordance with the WMF IP access policy. Cheers, Ethmostigmus 🌿 (talk | contribs) 07:58, 4 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I am requesting to be a Temporary account IP viewer to deal with vandalism. Recently temporary accounts have been making disruptive edits on the pages Grachi and Esmeralda Pimentel. Knowing if multiple temporary accounts are from the same IP address with be useful when reporting vandalism. I agree to the policy and will only use the addresses for the prevention of vandalism. I often do a lot of anti-vandalism work and dealing with LTAs, also reporting some to m:SRG. This right would be very useful when dealing with disruption from multiple TAs on the same range. --Prothe1st (leave me a message)-- 00:41, 6 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
