MediaWiki talk:Titleblacklist

Latest comment: 8 days ago by Pppery in topic Arabic + anything else

Welcome to the title blacklist noticeboard
The following instructions were copied from mw:Extension:Title Blacklist.

The disallowed titles list is maintained as a system message MediaWiki:Titleblacklist.

This page consists of regular expressions, each on a separate line. For example:

Foo <autoconfirmed|noedit|errmsg=blacklisted-testpage>
Bar #No one should create article about it

There is no need to use "^" at the beginning and "$" at the end; these are added automatically.

Each entry may also contain optional attributes, enclosed in <> and divided by |

  • autoconfirmed — only non-autoconfirmed users are unable to create/upload/move such pages
  • noedit — users are also unable to edit this page
  • casesensitive — don't ignore case when checking title for being disallowed
  • errmsg — the name of the message that should be displayed instead of standard

When the action is blocked, one of the following messages is displayed together with the filter row (as $1): titleblacklist-forbidden-edit, titleblacklist-forbidden-move, titleblacklist-forbidden-new-account or titleblacklist-forbidden-upload. Generic filenames have their own custom error message, MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-imagename.

There is also MediaWiki:Titlewhitelist and a global title blacklist.

Only administrators, page movers and template editors can override this list on all actions. When they override this list when creating or editing a page, MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-warning is displayed. Account creators can override this list on account creations only.

The disallowed usernames list is handled at meta:Title blacklist by adding entries with the <newaccountonly> parameter.

Very short draft names

edit

Should we preemptively exclude very short, all-ASCII draft titles like Draft:/, Draft:17, Draft:A, and Draft:Bob? These are often used for nonsense and test pages, and are unlikely to be used for constructive drafts on topics that aren't covered yet. (Non-ASCII titles are plausible targets for articles about individual characters.) –LaundryPizza03 (d) 04:58, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hits at quarry:query/99987, and there's indeed been more than this pattern's fair share of deletions. I took a look at a sample of the existing, non-redirect drafts in there - the first 18 of them, up to the end of the A's, out of 83 total - and fully two thirds of them were legitimate attempts at drafts of subjects that would reasonably have these titles. None were close to being acceptable, mind you, and most would have to be disambiguated before being moved into mainspace. I checked an even smaller sample of existing redirects (Draft:25K, Draft:4GR, Draft:6B2); all three had been drafts started at those titles, with those titles being not-unreasonable choices, and then accepted and moved into mainspace; albeit with the latter two being renamed afterwards. Blacklisting's likely to do more harm than good here. —Cryptic 05:56, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
What about draft titles with 2 characters or less? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 05:59, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Looked at samples of existing titles, six non-redirs and six redirs (like you could've done yourself), arbitrarily starting at 'O' for each. Of the non-redirs, one was nonsense, one blank, and the other four legitimate drafts; two of those four were properly titled (one would need disambiguation if mainspaced, the other has an existing article), and the other two were the subject's initials. Of the redirs, one was initials again, and redirected to a duplicate draft at the proper title by someone else; one was a properly-named draft moved into mainspace with disambiguation added (and then the draft title retargeted to the mainspace disambig); one's a legitimate draft-to-draft shortcut; two are entirely useless redirects to their mainspace titles, created like that rather than moved; and one was a legitimate accepted draft started with a nonsensical title. That last one, Draft:SV, I'd rate as worth a thousand deletions of nonsense pages. —Cryptic 06:26, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Description of suggested change: On the Polish Wikipedia, the User: namespace is actually Wikipedysta:, not Używacz:. Używacz is an archaic Polish word for "someone who uses", not the modern word for "computer system user", which would be Użytkownik, which the Polish Wikipedia also doesn't use.

Wikipedysta was already blacklisted, with the subpattern "Wikiped[iy]sta". From manual inspection, looks like we just unblacklisted Atuisoq, Benotser, Druvadur, Odwumanyɛni, Outelizador(a) (though we now disallow Outelizadora, with a redundant group around the a), Panganggo, Usuário(a) (while, again, disallowing Usuárioa with the final a grouped), کاریار, Ọbanife, and 𐌽𐌹𐌿𐍄𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍃. Any idea what projects those used to be for? And are for, at least for Outelizador(a) and Usuário(a)? —Cryptic 00:54, 6 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Benotser might be an artifact of the combination of Benotzer, Benutser, and Benutzer into Ben[ou]t[sz]er. Not sure what I was trying to paste for 𐌽𐌹𐌿𐍄𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍃, but it would've been the last that I checked, so maybe I tried to search for "𐌽𐌹𐌿𐍄𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍃)". —Cryptic 01:38, 6 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Does it make any sense to retain Druvadur, Panganggo, and Ọbanife? They're still active namespace aliases in those Wikipedias. Plenty of other aliases too, for that matter. —Cryptic 01:55, 6 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Preemptive action as the space recommended for WP:ROUNDROBIN swaps. In particular, User:Ahecht/Scripts/pageswap uses such titles as intermediates. May require a custom editnotice. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 08:01, 9 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

A type of useless user category that has been consistently and frequently deleted at CfD. While level-0 userboxes are acceptable, it is unhelpful to categorize users by the languages they don't speak.

Suggest adding to the section "ATTACK TITLES AND/OR PAGE MOVE VANDALISM TARGETS":

  • .*wikipedia.*sucks.*

Reason: To prevent socks of Rgalo10 from creating attack pages like User talk:Quebecguy/Wikipedia Sucks. I highly doubt that this phrase will ever be an acceptable title. SuperPianoMan9167 (talk) 23:11, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

This is going to have a lot of false(ish) positives. In addition to the existing pages at quarry:query/103364 (which uses a slightly more permissive pattern), it'd match every page in the Wikipedia: and Wikipedia talk: namespaces that contains "sucks", ranging in character from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Survivor Sucks (3rd nomination) to Wikipedia:Source assessment/JackSucksAtLife to WP:SUCKS. —Cryptic 23:35, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oof. Any way to fix this? SuperPianoMan9167 (talk) 23:36, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't see how. The false positives just from the namespaces can be worked around (with some difficulty - something like /.*(?!^Wikipedia( talk)?:)wikipedia.*sucks.*/, maybe), but excluding pages like Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of HurricaneKatrinaSUCKS really can't be. —Cryptic 23:44, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't think this will stop the harassment, as the LTA seems to be shifting page titles frequently. (example from last week) quebecguy ⚜️ (talk | contribs) 23:45, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Cryptic: maybe User( talk)?:.?\/.*wikipedia.*sucks.* would work?
Or maybe just adding @Quebecguy to the "protected user subspaces" by adding User talk:Quebecguy?.* # Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Rgalo10? SuperPianoMan9167 (talk) 23:52, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Then Quebecguy couldn't make subpages in his own userspace, and in particular talk page archives - Special:Prefixindex/User:Quebecguy/ and Special:Prefixindex/User talk:Quebecguy/ are both well-populated. —Cryptic 23:55, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
That problem would be solved by allowing autoconfirmed users to bypass the blacklist:
User( talk)?:Quebecguy?.* <autoconfirmed|noedit|errmsg=titleblacklist-custom-userspace-semi> #Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Rgalo10 SuperPianoMan9167 (talk) 00:07, 19 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Rgolo10 has (a) also been hitting my usertalkspace and (b) has been using autoconfirmed socks on occasion, I believe. Maybe it might be possible to hit his copy-pasted, same-thing-every-time rant with an edit filter instead? - The Bushranger One ping only 01:03, 19 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
That seems like a better idea. SuperPianoMan9167 (talk) 01:06, 19 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm willing to do this if the edit filter doesn't work out, but I doubt it'd be effective for much longer than four days. We'd just be teaching him how to make himself harder to detect. —Cryptic 01:09, 19 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Arabic + anything else

edit

Upon analyzing all the Arabic mixed-script redirects, I have found only five that are likely to be plausible. Depending on the outcome of RfDs beginning at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2026_May_4#Arabic_diacritics_+_anything_else, a new "Arabic + anything else" rule on mixed script might be needed. I won't file a formal edit request until the RfD is done.

However, Arabic diacritics are also flagged as Syriac, so they should be added as an exception to the "Syriac + anything else" rule. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 00:34, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I also have a series of RfDs on mixed-script Hebrew redirects beginning at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2026_May_3#Comedy_ןɐɹʇuǝɔ. Results do not support a general "Hebrew + anything else" blacklist entry, but might support more specific rules such as "Niqqud + non-Hebrew" (some niqqud resemble Latin combining diacritics); or "geresh + non-Hebrew" for an apostrophe lookalike. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 00:40, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Zero-width characters

edit

I believe we need a title blacklist entry for titles that contain zero-width characters and are entirely in Latin with no combining characters. Most of these characters are intended for rendering text, such as ligatures, and none are likely to be used in all-Latin titles unless a combining character needs to be placed correctly. I just encountered Elfansojautes (talk · contribs) and their sock Gummybearsnack (talk · contribs), a WP:CT/SASG SPA associated with the Cheema clan, who moved several pages to titles that contain a zero-width non-joiner. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:54, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

That would make sense. Draft regex: ^(?=.*\p{Cf})(?=.*[a-z])[ -~\p{Cf}]+$. This excludes the entire "cf" unicode category in a title containing at least one ASCII letter and otherwise only ASCII characters. "Cf" includes some Arabic characters that aren't technically zero width but I can't imagine them belonging in an otherwise-Latin title. * Pppery * it has begun... 04:59, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

On second thought I should also include the en dash in my regex. That changes it to ^(?=.*\p{Cf})(?=.*[a-z])[ -~\p{Cf}–]+$ and adds Kazakh–Nogai_War_(1577) , Khiva–Bukhara_War_of_1806 (both were previously article titles which I moved), West Eisenhower–Jackson Memorial Tunnel, and ⁨⁨L'Aurore⁩⁩_(1909–1941). * Pppery * it has begun... 05:21, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'd prefer to wait until the RfD closes. * Pppery * it has begun... 06:14, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2026_May_15#Zero-width_characters closed as keep per WP:TRAINWRECK principle. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:28, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've filed a series of smaller RfDs as suggested there. I'll wait until those are closed, and then add a rule then (assuming I'm not on strike at the time). * Pppery * in solidarity 04:12, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Indic punctuation (Danda)

edit

The danda and double danda are not exclusive to Devanagari. Could except those two marks for other indic scripts so titles with punctuation in those scripts aren't being blocked from use ~2026-30173-39 (talk) 20:10, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
