Unprotected topic area templates that qualify for ECP by default. 55 templates, all strictly within the topic area according to the talk page templates (i.e. without relatedcontent=yes or section=yes).
- n.b. @Sean.hoyland: a couple of these were already evaluated here. Staraction (talk · contribs) 15:18, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- I see. Thanks. I was not aware that declining ECP for pages strictly within the topic area was an option. Perhaps I should reread the rules. Sean.hoyland (talk) 15:32, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Staraction, "All articles whose topic is strictly within the Arab-Israeli conflict topic area shall be extended confirmed protected by default, without requiring prior disruption on the article." - Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Palestine-Israel_articles_5#Final_decision. I see the article vs template constraint now. If template protection depends on recent disruption levels, I think it might be more cost effective to crowdsource requests for protection on a case-by-case basis when needed rather than ask an admin to look through them all. Maybe it's better to remove the request. What do you think? Sean.hoyland (talk) 15:55, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- That sounds reasonable to me. As our content grows it might be a good idea to check in once in a while on these templates. Best, Staraction (talk · contribs) 15:58, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- I'm not going to overrule another admin, but I don't see why templates shouldn't be preemptively protected following the same logic as articles. * Pppery * in solidarity 16:01, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- Pinging @Toadspike here as well since we're discussing one of your actions. I'm fine with the templates either being protected or not, since I can see the reasoning on both ends. Best, Staraction (talk · contribs) 16:10, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- Neither do I. It seems better to let the machines prevent ECR violations rather than rely on humans to handle them. And our ECR violation reverting department has had some staff reductions in recent years. But I guess including templates would be scope creep strictly speaking without an amendment to the rule. Sean.hoyland (talk) 16:20, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping. Per the quote Sean provided above, the ArbCom-mandated preemptive EC protection appears to apply to articles only. I evaluated the previous requests following the default logic for protecting of templates, while considering ECR violations the same way I would consider other disruptive edits. Templates, unlike other pages, can be protected preemptively if they are transcluded a lot (WP:HRT). I don't claim that my approach was entirely scientific or correct, but I didn't want to overstep my purview as an admin or perform protections I couldn't justify and didn't feel were necessary. Another admin (e.g. @Pppery) is welcome to protect any templates I declined to protect or increase the protection level on any templates I protected if they can justify those actions (presumably using point C of WP:ARBECR); I would not consider that wheel-warring. Toadspike [Talk] 17:58, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
- My justification for the action is explained at Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection/Archive/2026/04#c-Pppery-20260430211500-Rsjaffe-20260430211300 (TLDR: I feel a topic-wide ECR by itself authorizes preemptive protection). Although I used the word "article" there I don't see templates as any different. * Pppery * in solidarity 18:11, 31 May 2026 (UTC)

- I've been denying preemptive ECP on templates due to the wording of the decision. However, when I look back at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Palestine-Israel articles 5/Proposed decision#ECP by default, the considerations behind that decision seem applicable to templates as well, so it almost looks like the scope of the decision was not as intended. However, I'm very hesitant to unilaterally reinterpret the rule. This might be one to send back to arbcom for a review and possible rewording. — rsjaffe 🗣️ 17:56, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
