Administrators' newsletter – March 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2025).

- A request for comment is open to discuss whether AI-generated images (meaning those wholly created by generative AI, not human-created images modified with AI tools) should be banned from use in articles.
- A series of 22 mini-RFCs that double-checked consensus on some aspects and improved certain parts of the administrator elections process has been closed (see the summary of the changes).
- A request for comment is open to gain consensus on whether future administrator elections should be held.
- A new filter has been added to the Special:Nuke tool, which allows administrators to filter for pages in a range of page sizes (in bytes). This allows, for example, deleting pages only of a certain size or below. T378488
- Non-administrators can now check which pages are able to be deleted using the Special:Nuke tool. T376378
- The 2025 appointees for the Ombuds commission are だ*ぜ, Arcticocean, Ameisenigel, Emufarmers, Faendalimas, Galahad, Nehaoua, Renvoy, Revi C., RoySmith, Teles and Zafer as members, with Vermont serving as steward-observer.
- Following the 2025 Steward Elections, the following editors have been appointed as stewards: 1234qwer1234qwer4, AramilFeraxa, Daniuu, KonstantinaG07, MdsShakil and XXBlackburnXx.
DYK for The 8-Bit Big Band
On 7 March 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The 8-Bit Big Band, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 8-Bit Big Band won Nintendo their first Grammy Award? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The 8-Bit Big Band. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, The 8-Bit Big Band), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Feedback on my article: Little Bear (books)
Hi @TechnoSquirrel69 I was wondering if you could take a look at the article Little Bear (book) that I recently edited and added a lot to. Some feedback would be greatly appreciated as I am a new editor to Wikipedia. Thanks! - Anniehats Anniehats 22:52, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hey Anniehats, welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for contributing to this article! First things first, since the article seems to focus on the series as a whole, I would consider moving (renaming) the article to Little Bear (book series) to reflect that. You've done admirable work expanding this article! The most overarching piece of feedback I would share about the prose would be to maintain focus on the topic: a section in the middle reads like a mini-biography of the author — which is not entirely necessary and could instead be covered at the article about her — and the section about the illustrators could easily be condensed into a list and merged into a larger section. There are a couple of unsourced paragraphs which I've added {{citation needed}} tags to. If you'd like more detailed feedback from editors more knowledgeable on this than me, I would recommend opening a peer review and inviting people active at WikiProject Books. I hope that helps, and let me know if you have questions about any of this! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 05:06, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! I will make those changes! Anniehats 20:02, 14 March 2025 (UTC)

The article Amid Amidi has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Fails WP:BASIC.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. WikiCup 2025 May newsletter
The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.
Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:
BeanieFan11 (submissions) with 1,233 round points from 24 good articles, 28 Did you know articles, and one In the news nomination, mainly about athletes and politicians
Thebiguglyalien (submissions) with 1,127 round points, almost entirely from two high-multiplier featured articles on Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) and Grace Coolidge, in addition to two GAs and two reviews
History6042 (submissions) with 1,088 round points from four featured lists about Michelin-starred restaurants, nine good articles and a good topic mostly on Olympic-related subjects, seven ITN articles, and dozens of reviews
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,085 round points from three FAs, one GA, and four DYKs on military history, as well as 18 reviews
Arconning (submissions) with 887 round points, mostly from four FLs, six GAs, and seven DYKs on Olympic topics, along with more than two dozen reviews
In addition, we would like to recognize
Generalissima (submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.
The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. About my Topic ban
Hello! This may be a weird (and probably embarrassing) question, but is my topic ban over? Six months after October 12 is April 12, right? I have got zero notifications about my topic ban after that. Anyway, if I was wrong, and it was actually the wrong date, don't wait to tell me! 🍗TheNuggeteer🍗 (My "blotter") 11:38, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

I've gone ahead and removed you from the editing restrictions list. (Daniel, since you enacted the topic ban, could you chime in on any procedural things that need to be done?) Welcome back, and if I might add a personal suggestion, I would read through that discussion once again to identify aspects where the community had feedback for you and keep those in mind moving forward. Interface administrator changes
- Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
- An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
- An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2025 to reduce the backlog of articles in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

Articles for Creation backlog drive

Hello TechnoSquirrel69:
WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in June!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 1 month of outstanding reviews from the current 3+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 June 2025 through 30 June 2025.
You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.
Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 3200 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the mailing list or alternatively to opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page.

Peer review request for Animal Crackers
Hi, I see you're on the list of volunteers for peer review; I wanted to see if you could provide some feedback on the article for the Marx Brothers' Animal Crackers; the editor who submitted it wanted to make the article better, and possibly reach FA or GA status, in advance of the film entering into the public domain in January 2026.
I came across the listing and responded, but decided to page you because I'm not very knowledgeable on editing film stuff in WP, and thought someone more experienced might be of help. The article is currently well-researched but needs a lot of editing for tone, style, conciseness, as well as falling in line with FA-level articles about films.
I've already given some feedback on the peer review page and made some edits. Please feel free to chime in with advice, insight and opinions. Thanks in advance! CVDX (talk) 21:03, 13 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hey CVDX! Thanks for your message — it's very kind of you to invite other editors to the review on the nominator's behalf — but I'm unfortunately unable to make that commitment at the moment, as I'm traveling and spending what spare time I have prepping for the Developing Countries WikiContest. Hopefully some of the other people you reached out to will have some constructive comments, and you can also ask for more participation at the talk pages of one of the relevant WikiProjects. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 03:37, 14 June 2025 (UTC)

Hi TS69, is the problem with my review request that I haven’t listed myself at a signup page for the contest? Or is the article/review just ineligible for the contest? ꧁Zanahary꧂ 05:11, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Zanahary, to my knowledge, the review requests sidebar exists to let contest participants advertise their nominations so that they can be more speedily reviewed and submitted, but the other DCWC coordinators can chime in if I'm mistaken about that. If you'd like to sign up and relist it, go ahead — I'd love to have you participate again! If not, you can also list it at the eligible reviews page. Let me know if you have any questions. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 08:01, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hmm, I am still confused—if I sign up for the contest, is AFIBC, which I wrote and nominated long ago, eligible for the review request listing? Or is that only for articles written/nominated during the contest period? ꧁Zanahary꧂ 08:03, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- It will be eligible for submission if the review passes during the contest period. The reason I removed it from the review requests is because you had not signed up for the contest. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 08:54, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2025).

Interface administrator changes
- Following a talk page discussion, speedy deletion criterion G13 has been amended to remove "Userspace with no content except the article wizard placeholder text."
- WP:Manual of Style/Superscripts and subscripts was upgraded to a guideline following a RfC discussion.
- The 2025 Developing Countries WikiContest will run from 1 July to 30 September. Sign up now!
- Administrator elections will take place this month. Administrator elections are an alternative to RFA that is a gentler process for candidates due to secret voting and multiple people running together. The call for candidates is July 9–15, the discussion phase is July 18–22, and the voting phase is July 23–29. Get ready to submit your candidacy, or (with their consent) to nominate a talented candidate!
AELECT?
Hello there :). I believe I wrote an email last February asking if you have ever considered an RfA nomination. I still think you'd be a great admin, and I'd be happy to nominate you if you're interested in AELECT. I saw you're travelling, so maybe not great timing, but there's always future elections as well! —Femke 🐦 (talk) 16:05, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the vote of confidence, Femke; it's good to hear from you again! I've thought about your offer now and then since our last conversation, but I feel like I don't have much else to say than what I did last time: while a good bit of my work here on Wikipedia has been administration-adjacent, I typically find that the reasons I'm doing any of those things loop around to the main reason I'm here, which is to work on content. Even aside from the traveling, I've been finding less time to contribute this year than I did in the past, which makes me want to maintain my focus on it even more. If circumstances (or my mind) change at some point in the future, though, you will of course be the first editor I'll reach out to to start on the path to the mop. :) Thanks again! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 02:22, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
About the edits to Princess Mononoke
Hello, and thank you for your notes. I would like to know what type of source is needed here - Do I need to have a source directly saying that the original Japanese naming, タタラ場, is based on the たたら製鉄 ironworking system, or do I just need to have a source about the existence of the たたら製鉄 system?
If it is the former, there is at least one Japanese source talking about it; the Shimane Prefecture also considers the movie as a portrayal of the local culture and history in the popular media. Several scenes in the movie directly portrays the entire tatara system IRL, from deforestation and waterways to the tatara bellows. In addition, the naming is exactly the same - タタラ is just たたら; different kana spelling, both are "tatara".
If it is the latter, I have already cited the English Wikipedia page about the said system; it is mentioned in the Tatara (furnace) page. If that is not enough, I can cite the Japanese Wikipedia page たたら製鉄 ("tatara ironmaking") instead. 8buildingsofelixir (talk) 11:16, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey 8buildingsofelixir, thanks for your questions! I'll do my best to explain the issues here concisely, but please tell me if anything needs elaboration, and I'll be happy to do so. Firstly, there needs to be a reliable source stating that Tataraba from Princess Mononoke was actually named after the tatara. It's very likely to be the case, but it's not so obvious that I'd say it could stand in the article without a source to back it up. Secondly, the Japanese spelling also needs verification so we can be sure it's correct — again, not something that would be that obvious to the readers and editors of the English WIkipedia. I know enough kana that I can tell the two spellings you've mentioned read the same, but as I understand it the scripts are not arbitrarily interchangeable; we need to know which one is considered correct. Could you show me which Shimane Prefecture source you're referring to? Finally, since Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, it's not a reliable source and can't be used as a citation. Let me know what you think here. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 03:31, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- All right, allow me to reply it bit by bit.
- Reliable source stating that Tataraba from the movie is based on the historical tatara ironmaking process.
- https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASR4T6X7YR4TPTIB00Z.html. A news report from Asahi Shimbun (one of the largest news outlets of Japan) about a historical tatara complex (called "Sugaya Tatara") in the Shimane Prefecture. It states that the Studio Ghibli staff used this particular tatara complex as the model for the Tataraba in the movie.
- https://tetsunomichi.gr.jp/tales-about-tatara/princess-mononoke/. From the official website of the 島根県鉄の道文化圏推進協議会 (Shimane Prefecture Association for Promotion of the Road of Iron Culture Area) - this is the "Shimane Prefecture source", and this association is recognized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan (see here) in case you doubt the reliability. It directly compared the ironmaking process in the movie to the actual tatara process, analyzed the dialogues that related to the ironmaking process, and stated that one particular tatara complex (the same Sugaya Tatara reported by Asahi Shimbun) is used as the model for the Tataraba in the movie.
- The Japanese spelling.
- Studio Ghibli sources spell the place as タタラ場 (see here) using katakana, while a tatara complex in real life is usually spelled as たたら場 using hiragana. For people who don't understand Japanese, it might imply a significant difference, but in modern Japanese it is a common practice to spell a generic name in katakana to represent it as a specific name - that is, the Tataraba instead of a Tataraba. The meaning is still the same. And in this case, the spellings are interchangeable - you can see that in both the Asahi Shimbun source and the Shimane Prefecture source, they spell the place in the movie as たたら場 rather than following the Studio Ghibli spelling.
- Naming specifics. The word たたら originally stands for a particular type of ironworking bellows and by extension the ironworking furnace powered by the bellows. たたら場 means a place that has a tatara furnace, i.e., an ironworking complex; although sometimes an entire complex can be called just "XXたたら" rather than "XXたたら場", such as the "Sugaya Tatara" above. The Japanese Wikipedia page title たたら製鉄 refers to the entire tatara ironmaking process.
- Japanese sources for the tatara ironmaking process.
- If the English/Japanese Wikipedia is of no trust, then the Shimane Prefecture source above has a detailed explanation of what the tatara ironmaking process was. There are other official webpages talking about the tatara process as well, since it is an integral part of Japanese heritage.
- I would still suggest keeping the "Tatara" Wikipedia page link to help the readers with a quick reference.
- 8buildingsofelixir (talk) 07:26, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the detailed response and research, 8buildingsofelixir! I've restored the footnote with the Asahi Shimbun article as the source and added another detail from it to § Style. For the sake of keeping the article focused on the film, I decided not to include more detail about the tatara in the footnote as you did earlier — if readers want more information about ironmaking, they can always click through as you suggested. Good catch finding the name on the Ghibli Park website; since it uses the katakana spelling, I'd say that's good enough to put in the article. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 17:24, 14 July 2025 (UTC)

ref discussion
why did you remove my reference even though it was Dure.shh.mln (talk) 15:06, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey Dure.shh.mln, and welcome again to Wikipedia! I assume you're referring to this edit. On Wikipedia, the
<ref>...</ref>tags are typically used for citing sources and are listed as footnotes under the "References" section of each article. You can also use them for explanatory footnotes, though you would use slightly different markup — I can explain that further if you'd like. In this case, though, I don't think "(Chihiro)" needs to be in a footnote; it can stay in the text of the article without issue. Let me know if you have any questions! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 18:36, 26 July 2025 (UTC)- oh thank you Dure.shh.mln (talk) 19:18, 26 July 2025 (UTC)

EOTW nomination #600
As much as possible, I always re-write a nomination so that the recognition doesn't sound like it comes from just one editor but rather from the nominators and the seconds (that add appropriate and worthy comments) and the members of the Editor Retention Project. I look at a nomination as a draft, not a statement. The Award and the Hall of Fame banner are both presented by the community/WikiProject, not an individual editor. In one way or another I think I have altered every one of the 600 nominations presented for consideration. Going forward I will respect your wishes to not rewrite your nominations but I hope you can forgo text that makes it sound like it comes from one person. I appreciate all your nominations and seconds. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 03:28, 29 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Buster7: Thanks for clarifying! I can indeed adjust my tone in the future so the nominations read less personally. I think my understanding of the nomination process differed from how you've been carrying it out, but the reason I had this objection is because the award is presented with the introduction "
[Editor] submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
" followed by the quoted statement, which definitely comes off as if the quoted lines are the nominator's words alone. The Hall of Fame blurb doesn't mention this, which is why I'm fine with it being summarized or even completely rewritten. If the award statement is intended to be a reflection of the community's thoughts, maybe the language can be updated to reflect that somehow. Alternatively, it can swing the other way and simply quote the nominator and supporters verbatim. Let me know your thoughts on this, and maybe we can move the conversation to the award talk page for further input. Thanks, as always, for your tireless work keeping the Eddy going! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 17:25, 29 July 2025 (UTC)
Temporary account IP viewer granted

Hello, TechnoSquirrel69. Per your request, your account has been granted temporary account IP viewer rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is only to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:
- You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
- Access should not be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).
It is also important to note that the following actions are logged for others to see:
- When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
- Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
- Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with an IP address or CIDR range.
Remember, even if a user is violating policy, avoid revealing personal information if possible. Use temporary account usernames rather than disclosing IP addresses directly, or give information such as same network/not same network or similar. If you do not want the user right anymore then please ask me or another administrator and it will be removed for you. Happy editing! asilvering (talk) 01:25, 4 August 2025 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – August 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2025).
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
- Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.
- Administrators can now restrict the "Add a Link" feature to newcomers. The "Add a Link" Structured Task helps new account holders get started with editing. Administrators can configure this setting in the Community Configuration page.
- The arbitration case Indian military history has been closed.
- South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as
All pages related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), broadly construed, including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups.
- The contentious topic designations for Sri Lanka (SL) and India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan (IPA) are folded into this new contentious topic.
- The community-authorized general sanctions regarding South Asian social groups (GS/CASTE) are rescinded and folded into this new contentious topic.

- The arbitration case Article titles and capitalisation 2 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 31 July.
- The arbitration case Transgender healthcare and people has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 11 August.

- The coordinators are working on some improvements to the scoring rules that will hopefully make them easier to digest, and in all aspects, we try to make the contest as approachable as possible. But I understand that Wikipedia's processes can be tough (having thousands of edits doesn't spare me from being confused by them once in a while!), so would you share which parts you found too complicated? I think your perspective as a newer editor is valuable, since it can help us make the contest better for everyone. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 16:05, 11 August 2025 (UTC)

Hello, @TechnoSquirrel69. You marked this article a year ago as being closely paraphrased. Would you happen to recall which one that would be? I'm asking because some of them are multi-page newspaper articles where only the first page was linked. Also your effort isn't nullified if I don't have to duplicate it. But thanks for calling attention to this. Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 23:29, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
