Speedy deletion nomination of 3/4/2024 DePaul University Popcorn Incident

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on 3/4/2024 DePaul University Popcorn Incident requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about something invented/coined/discovered by the article's creator or someone they know personally, and it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions; however, please remember the essential rule of respecting copyrights. Edits to Wikipedia, such as your edit to the page Grandwood Park, Illinois, may not contain material from copyrighted sources unless that text is available under a suitable free license. It is almost never okay to copy extensive text out of a book or website and paste it into a Wikipedia article with little or no alteration, though you can clearly and briefly quote copyrighted text in the right circumstances. Speedy deletion nomination of Grandwood Park Park District

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Grandwood Park Park District requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.grandwoodpark.net/about/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

John Gage (Landowner) moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, John Gage (Landowner), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Speedy deletion nomination of John Gage (Landowner)

Your submission at Articles for creation: John Gage (landowner) (May 29)

edit
Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reasons left by Dan arndt were:
This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.
The content of this submission includes material that does not meet Wikipedia's minimum standard for inline citations. Please cite your sources using footnotes. For instructions on how to do this, please see Referencing for beginners. Thank you.
The comment the reviewer left was:
Fails WP:ANYBIO - Findagrave is not an acceptable or reliable source neither is WordPress (which discovernjhistory.org is based). Though discovernjhistory.org states the sketch is taken from the Online Biographical Dictionary of the Woman Suffrage Movement in the United States, if you can locate and confirm the original source that would count as a reliable source. Also it should be noted that notability is not inherited - being the husband of a notable individual does not make this individual notable in their own right.
Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit after they have been resolved.

Your submission at Articles for creation: Bertram Ashburnham (Constable of Dover Castle) (November 10)

edit
Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by Robert McClenon was:
Thank you for your submission, but the subject of this article already exists in Wikipedia. You can find it and improve it at Bertram Ashburnham (Constable of Dover Castle) instead.
The comment the reviewer left was:
Two copies of this page have been created, in draft space and in article space. It is not necessary to create two copies of the same page, and it annoys the reviewers.

If the article either is ready for the encyclopedia or appears to be ready for the encyclopedia, the draft will be redirected to the article. However, the article could have been moved into article space instead.

If the article does not appear to be ready for the encyclopedia, the article may be nominated for deletion, and the draft will be kept.

This draft is either essentially the same as the article with the same name, or a subset of the article with the same name. The draft will be replaced by a redirect from draft space to the article.
Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit after they have been resolved.

Hi there. It's generally ok to copy notable people from a bio article into the "notable people" section of another article, so long as what is copied is sourced on the bio article. I checked several of the birth dates, and many were not sourced on the bio article. Not a biggie. Cheers! Magnolia677 (talk) 14:37, 6 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Sourcing

edit

I would rather avoid deleting a bunch of your stuff if it can be helped. I feel bad, because I can see you really enjoy history, and we need more editors like that. I think you may be doing some things wrong when you're writing these articles, but I don't think it's because you can't write good history articles, but because you haven't learned how. I'm not sure your professors are giving you what you need. :(

The thing that alarmed me in Leopoldus de Bertie is that the article says "It is also known that Leopold had a living descendant in the year 1154 who returned to England from Normandy with Henry II" and then it cites Clark. But when I read Clark's article, it doesn't say that at all; it looks like you put the reference to Clark in to replace some other reference to a website (it looks like you were seeking books and scholarly sources, which is a good impulse), but Clark doesn't contain the information that's in that sentence.

Can you explain to me a little about your workflow and what you do when you're expanding articles and adding sources, like you were doing with Leopoldus de Bertie, so I can understand how this happened? I am an instructor (though not of history), I've been here a long time, and written some history articles. I don't want to stand around and dunk on your skills and delete your work. You're clearly willing to put in time and energy to Wikipedia, which matters a lot, and I'd rather help you make your output better, if you're willing. Choess (talk) 04:22, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Firstly, I mainly consider myself an essayist and your blunt opinion of my work is necessary for self-improvement despite anyones "feelings". A wikipedia article and a standard college essay are nowhere near the same in terms of finalization, someone who is massively successful in college can appear as a complete noob in wikipedia communities due to certain expectations.
Secondly, the creation of the particular Leopoldus de Bertie article, for me, was a complete blunder on my end and I should have not continued with it. Considering the shotty sources I should have used better judgement and just ditched the article, which I have done for many in the past. Reliable sources come first. The swap of sources was likely a submission error and nothing more. Book Pidgeon (talk) 04:47, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Please don't just dunk on yourself. I know I was blunt, but you also have a lot of potential: you seem to be fine with properly formatting and looking up references and so on, so you can obviously pay attention to detail, which a lot of people can't do. There are definitely some ways in which Wikipedia is not like other forms of writing, but editing here can develop a lot of skills that are useful in college, especially for a history major. A few thoughts:
  1. Wikipedia:Writing Wikipedia articles backward is a short essay worth reading. I don't 100% agree with it (on a subject you really know well, "creating an article backward" is actually much less cumbersome) but when you've only started learning about a subject, I think forward editing makes it much easier.
  2. In general, people love to imagine their genealogy stretches back into ancient times, for a variety of reasons, and have been willing to make things up for that purpose. In the UK context, genealogies stretching back into the early Norman period, or before the Norman Conquest, are very suspect, even though they were widely believed through the 19th century. (The work of J. Horace Round in the early 20th century makes for entertaining reading—he absolutely tore down on fake genealogies, especially those printed uncritically by Sir Bernard Burke.) Unfortunately, a lot of easy-to-reach sources on Google Books are from this period.
  3. "Leopoldus de Bertie" caught my eye as weird, because as a name it's muddled up. "Leopoldus" is a German name, "de" is French, and he was supposed to be an Anglo-Saxon? No shame you didn't notice this at first glance, but with more experience, that will set off your BS detector, like someone didn't know how to write a consistent origin story.
Have you been working on creating articles for each Constable of Dover Castle? I haven't done as much in recent years, but I have enjoyed working on similar lists of High Sheriffs and Lord Lieutenants. Choess (talk) 06:10, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will read Wikipedia:Writing Wikipedia articles backward as soon as I get the chance, I had not heard of this until now and it seems very helpful. In terms of genealogy, I typically have never attempted to write on a figure as early as Leopoldus de Bertie for this exact reason. The bread crumb trail being so suspect. However, I did not realize just how suspect it was and can be!
In terms of other Constable of Dover Castle articles, no I have not. However, much like you I enjoy working on similar lists. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me, I do feel as if I have been stuck at a certain level and this is what I have been needing to really understand the process and to take the time to grasp certain topics. Book Pidgeon (talk) 08:48, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Choess dropped a note on my talk page about their discussions with you, so I thought I'd weigh in a bit on editing on Anglo-Saxon/Anglo-Norman topics on Wikipedia. Specifically, I looked at two articles you started: Bertram Ashburnham (Constable of Dover Castle) and Alain de Buckland. First, what period of history are you majoring in? Have you taken any high-level classes that deal with the late Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Norman period and those periods only? Because, I have to agree with Choess - if you have had a class on those specific periods, it was a bit lacking in preparing you to evaluate sources for the period.
Let's look at Bertram first. The first big "uh oh" is the name. Bertram is not a name used by the 10th/11th century English and only VERY rarely by the 10th/11th century Normans. Domesday People by Katharine Keats-Rohan has .. three Bertran's in it... all either Normans or assumed to be Normans. If this "Bertram Ashburnham" was a nobleman under Edward the Confessor - he'd be listed as a landowner during Edward's reign in Domesday Book - and thus would be in Domesday People. There is no mention of such a person in Barlow's biography Edward the Confessor. Neither biography I have of Harold - Rex's Harold II: The Doomed Saxon King or Walker's Harold: Last Anglo-Saxon King mention a Bertram/Bertran. He is not mentioned in Douglas' biography William the Conqueror, nor in Bates' biography William the Conqueror, nor in Hagger's biography William King and Conqueror. Neither of his supposed sons are mentioned in Domesday People - and the name "Philip" is very unlikely for an Englishman born in 1040. There is no entry for such a person in Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. So we've exhausted the "go-to" big RELIABLE sources for the period, the ones we use to see at a quick glance who the person is. Looking at the sources you do provide - we have:
1. A museum entry for a 1679 engraving of this person. This is from a 1679 book on Heraldry. This source is supposed to support "Very little is known about the life of Bertram Ashburnham, but it is believed that he was the son of Anchitel de Ashburnham (b. c. 985), his mother being unknown. The name attributed to him directly connects his birthplace to Ashburnham. He is thought to have been married, due to the existence of two sons: one named Philip de Ashburnham born in 1040 and another simply known as Michael born around 1042." I'm afraid this museum entry does not support any of this information. The linked bio of Bertram on the British Museum's site is here but it doesn't support the information either.
2. The Battle Abbey Roll. This, despite our own article being somewhat equivocal, is not a reliable source for the existence of someone in this time period. It is not regarded as a reliable source for the existence of a person by any medievalist.
3. "The Constables and Wardens" - you say this is from Dover.UK.com, but in reality it is Dover.UK.com reprinting of The Annals of Dover, a 1916 book by John Bavington Jones. JB Jones appears to be this person who was a newspaper editor in Dover. Not a medievalist and thus this is not a good source at all.
4. Grosvenor Prints - this is just the same print as in #1. It is from a fine art print dealer, not the best source. It gives more information (I assume from the original book) that says that Reginald, supposed grandson of the supposed Bertram "was in possession of Ashburnham in 1166". This refers to the Cartae Baronum of 1166, which would mean that this Reginald should be in Keats-Rohan's companion volume to Domesday People, Domesday Descendants. There is no such person listed in Domesday Descendants. Note that this "source" is supposed to support "It is thought that not long after participating in the Battle of Hastings and Godwinson's death on October 14, he was executed by William the Conqueror in Canterbury." but this is not actually supported by the source - which states "This unfortunate Bertram is alleged to have met with a variety of deaths: to have been killed while fighting at Hastings, to have been executed by William the Conqueror outside the gates of Canterbury 'where he lived much esteemed, and to have been very active in the cause of liberty and his country', and to have met a similar fate at Dover." The source says that the supposed Bertram is given several conflicting death stories - killed at Hastings, OR executed outside the gates of Canterbury, OR executed at Dover. The article text is misleading because it only gives one of the three varying death stories.
5. This is the same print, but from a different print dealer. And it does not support the article text it is linked to in the article - "However, some sources state that Bertram was killed during the battle, while others say that he was killed in Dover Castle during the Norman march to Westminster Abbey following their victory." The Sanders site just says "beheaded by William the Conqueror c.1066"
6. List of Lord Wardens from a website - this supposedly supports "Regardless of the exact time of his death, Bertram's occupation of the aforesaid position would have been somewhat brief, as Norman knight William Peverel would possibly serve for a short period in 1066 following the start of the Norman Conquest of England." which I'm afraid that the site does not support - it doesn't say Peverel is a Norman at all.
7. this is a 1899 book on Dover, it's not horid, but it should be noted that it doesn't really support the article text either - you put in the article that "However it is confirmed that Odo of Bayeux, also of Norman origin, would take charge before the end of the year" but the book doesn't say anything about the timing or support "by the end of the year". The book just says that "Odo was given custody of Dover Castle." but this is right after a sentence talking about events in 1067 - so it isn't clear when the author thinks Odo took custody of Dover.
Okay, so none of the current sources are good. And the "go-to" sources don't mention such a person. Let's do a google scholar search to see if anything turns up. Searching "bertram de ashburnham" gives us four sources, all of which are from 1862 or before. Searching on plain "Bertram Ashburnham" gives us results but they all appear to be about another Bertram Ashburnham, who was Earl of Ashburnham in 1830. A search of "Bertram Ashburnham" with "Dover" gives us no current scholarly sources either. In short - no modern source (i.e. past 1950ish) by a medievalist mentions a Bertram de Ashburnham as existing.
The other article is a bit easier and more straightforward, if similar in ending. First - we look at Domesday People - nope. No Alain de Buckland. Nor is there a "Hugh de Caudebec" in Domesday People. No Alain de Buckland in Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. No Alain de Buckland in Barlow's biography William Rufus nor in Mason's William II the Red King. No Alain de Buckland in Hollister's biography Henry I or in Green's biography Henry I. With this time frame, we can check some other works - Green's Government of England Under Henry I - nope (although extensive entries for Hugh of Buckland exist), Green's Artistocracy of Norman England - nope, Newman's The Anglo-Norman Nobility in the Reign of Henry I - nope, Fleming's Kings & Lords in Conquest England - nope, Hudson's Land, Law, and Lordship in Anglo-Norman England - nope. The clincher here is Green's English Sheriffs to 1154 under Kent - he is NOT listed as a sheriff. The sheriff of Kent for the period c. 1066 to 1070ish is possibly Hugh de Port, but Green is not certain. The first securely attested post-Conquest sheriff in Kent is Hamo Dapifer.
The sources you provide for this article are:
1. A self-published genealogical site. Not a reliable source.
2. The Victoria County History of Lancaster. The link goes to pages 416-417 which I cannot see mention any such Alain de Buckland. It's about Blackburn Hundred in Lancaster, specifically the manor of Clayton-le-Moors, not Buckland, which is apparantly in Oxfordshire? This does not support the information.
And here I have to say that you commit an insanely amusing blunder - "He was married to Mrs Allen de Buckland" .... where the F-word did you come up with this? It's so laughably anachronistic that it made me spit Diet Coke when I read it. I can't even begin to think that anyone familiar with medieval history OR genealogy would write that... GAH.
So our last resort is a google scholar search - "alan de buckland" gives us nothing reliable. "Alain de Buckland"/"Alain de Bucklande"/"Alan de Bucklande" turns up nothing at all. "Alan Buckland" gives us articles mentioning a biologist or written by a biologist, nothing medieval.
So no, we have no sources that attest to such a person existing, i'm sorry to say. Both articles need to be deleted. It would be simplest if you requested it as the primary author.
Medieval history is not simple or easy, I know. And I don't want to discourage you from trying to write articles on it, but they need to start from reliable sources, not random internet searches. If you're going to edit on this time period, having access to the ODNB, Keats-Rohan's works, and many of the books I've mentioned above is pretty much required. I'm totally out of time for this today but if you're interested AND willing to put in the work, I could try to describe how I sit down to write an article on a person from this period later this week. Ealdgyth (talk) 14:49, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
After reading your lengthy message I have taken away that I am not fit for this line of work and will be stepping away, completely from writing on this period. I appreciate your blunt words and your helpful recommendations, I will be deleting all of the necessary pages surrounding this era in the hopes to avoid further problems/communications in line with my "insanely amusing" and "luaghable" work. Thank you for your time! Book Pidgeon (talk) 17:41, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
The aim of this was not to keep you from the topic area - it was to help you figure out what the reliable sources are. If you are at DePaul as your user page says, you should have access to some of the books you'd need. ODNB comes through the Wikipedia Library - all editors who meet the requirements (and you should) have access to the sources in it - including the ODNB. The only ones that might be difficult would be Keats-Rohan's works - I have them but I'm not sure how widely they are held by universities... the key to sourcing is to rely on academically published sources. Ealdgyth (talk) 18:06, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
"The aim of this was not to keep you from the topic area" - I totally understand, and again I want to thank you for the time you took to write all of this helpful information out. However, this is a self-imposed sanction I am placing. Perhaps in the future when my skills improve I can return to this era with the necessary tools.
