I miss your friendship and camaraderie already

You've done so much to improve the user experience on Wikipedia due to your active effort. You've always been better at Wikipedia than me. This space won't work as well without you, but for each of us there comes a moment. I'll live in hope that you grow uncomfortable without us. Until then, know you've earned my friendship and respect. I'm so proud to call you my wikifriend, a rank you joined when you opposed my first RfA twelve years ago. You were right then, and I have every reason to suspect you're right these days. BusterD (talk) 17:34, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikimania

Hello again. You are no longer active now, which is a shame, and it's sad to see another old sparring partner ScottyWong retiring too. But I was pondering whether to attend the Wikimania in Singapore and, as you're based in a nearby country, wondered whether you are likely to attend. As we both attended the HK Wikimania together, it would be nice to know whether there will be any familiar faces there.

If not, I may content myself with virtual attendance as it is otherwise not a good time to travel from the UK. So I'll look out for you in that astral form too.

You've been absent for a while…

Do you remember me Kudpung? I was the tenth signature here and I believe you sent a message on my talk page back when I was just a stupid newbie getting into trouble. A lot's changed since then but we remember you still. Hope life is going good for you outside of WP. Fathoms Below (talk) 20:30, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Fathoms Below. I do remember because I had already significantly reduced my activity. It was about a closure or something. Heh, my RfA was a mess of my own making. Hopefully it'll be the only major train wreck of 2024. Not sure about how much you've looked at but we've had a handful of other good things happen. Hey man im Josh, Novem Linguae, and Clovermoss have also been promoted in the meantime. May I say congratulations to them on your behalf? Or you can talk with them yourself of course. If this is too much chit chat I'll leave you to your guide. Fathoms Below (talk) 21:25, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Drafts

Dear Kudpung, this is in response to the post you made to my page about excessive draftification, probably in response to my post to Joe (and, I think you also posted to Talk:Laurence D. Marks which I don't normally edit for obvious reasons). I tend to do NPP on academics/science topics, so I had not seen until a few days ago draftification by a less experienced user. Earlier today I went to check the articles and found that SafariScribe had already reverted quite a few by the same user, hence I am adding him here to the discussion.

I would definitely support your suggestion to limit Draftification to users with reviewer rights (NPP/NPR). I think most of them are fairly careful, and while a few may be a bit too gentle in their reviews (IMO) I have not seen abuse. I think Joe is pretty careful about adding NPP rights (and possibly other relevant admins, I have only interacted with Joe to date). I would allow extended confirmed users to tag for notability etc, that would be fine. Perhaps open a RfC at WT:NPR? Ldm1954 (talk) 23:26, 19 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Laurence. Thank you for your feedback. Joe is a very experienced admin and a regular contributor to NPP both as an admin at PERM and a reviewer. Some research has begun into why backlog drives are possibly less effective than they were and I have not seen any misuse of the draft system by regular NPP right holders. A proper RFC for a new policy would be best launched on a NPR sub page, and supported by stats and empirical evidence. The stats are being gathered but I don't think we're ready for it just yet because it indirectly concerns a topic that might involve one or two other refinements to the Curation Tools and how we can better help new user who register with the prime intent of creating an article as their first edits. After a long while...

Hi Kudpung, I wonder if you still remember me. I guess you might have forgotten me since it's been years since we last talked. I do remember the days when I first joined Wikipedia and that was more than 10 years ago. Time really flies. I remember asking you for advice on the tiniest of things and looking back at our discussions last time, I was really disrespectful to you and I can't believe I said those things to you in the past. Looking back on those days, I realise that the young me was so immature and brazen. I guess it was years of adminship elsewhere and experience out in the real world that made me grow - having to make tough decisions and settle conflicts were not easy. Thank you for your words last time, especially because you were one of the few (apart from Callanecc) who gave me valuable advice when I was just starting out here. Wishing you good health too. Regards, Jianhui67 TC 19:58, 10 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Jianhui67 I do remember you although you've been practically absent from Wikipedia for what must be 6 years or so now. I have been completely absent myself for 2 years, only recently returning to editing. I don't remember you saying anything disrespectful and I was always glad to help. Did you go to Wikimania in Singapore? It's not far from here at all but I couldn't make it. Is there anything I can help you with? Take care, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:00, 11 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for remembering me even though I was absent all this while. Indeed, I have not edited Wikipedia for quite some time, only making a few edits or reverts every now and then. I'm still somewhat active on other Wikimedia projects on an irregular basis. And no, I did not go to Wikimania in 2023 as I was busy with university at that time. Just reminicising the past and all, and I came to pop by to see if you are still around. It's nice chatting with you after all these years. I'm doing well outside, and I hope to return and create more content here when I have time. Best, Jianhui67 TC 06:28, 11 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

BLP

Hi, Kudpung - I didn't want to do this on the other editor's talkpage, but in response to your feedback to them, no, DOB is not essential for BLP. Per WP:BLPDOB, we really only include them if they're widely published or the subject has made it clear they don't mind them being discussed. Given what a high standard NPP-ers hold themselves to, I think it's good they don't inadvertently encourage people to add potentially problematic BLP content, don't you? Pretty bold in making a prediction of the ArbCom election, but pretty accurate in the end! The final result saw Guerillero elected instead of Clovermoss, and every candidate managed to get over the 50% threshold, which may have been a first. Request for advice on draft article (Anton Sammut)

Hello Kudpung, I hope you don't mind me asking.

I have a draft article in my sandbox about Maltese philosopher and novelist Anton Sammut and would appreciate any guidance in preparing it for Articles for Creation.

Another editor previously reviewed it but has unfortunately been unavailable for some time, and the author is hoping to move the draft forward.

For transparency, I know the author personally, so I would prefer another editor to review and submit it.

Here is the draft: User:Stephen_John_Cremona/sandbox

Thank you very much for any advice or assistance.

— Stephen Cremona Stephen John Cremona (talk) 18:24, 15 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Stephen John Cremona. Hi Stephen, Thanks for reaching out. If you haven't already done so, the normal next step would be to submit the draft yourself to Articles for creation for review rather than asking individual editors to review it. I would suggest you refer again to the comments by DannyRogers800, and Theroadislong who has moved your sandbox article to our draft space. Another user you contacted, DoubleGrazing, is an admin and they may have some advice to offer.
At first blush, the article and its sources are mainly about the subject's work and very little about the person—essential biographical content is missing. The sources used are book reviews, and at least one of Sammut's books appears to be self-published. Although Sammut has recently started appearing in philosophical discussions online, sources of the kind that establish notability are required but I haven't found any.
The narrative of the article is even for me, a linguist and academic, very heavy-going, beyond my grasp and knowledge of semantics in a philosophical context, and may even contain elements of phrasing by an LLM. It's interesting to note that you pasted the entire article in to your user page in one single edit, and from a mobile device. I'm really not sure if the article will successfully resonate with the the expert reviewers at AfC as being ready for Wikipedia, especially as monetary transactions have been mentioned, but do bear in mind that while their work is to advise, it's not within their remit to improve it, or rewrite it into more conventional language for the general reader.
Nevertheless it's perhaps it's worth a try. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:08, 16 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello Kudpung, thank you very much for taking the time to review the draft and for your detailed feedback. I appreciate your observations regarding the need for clearer biographical content and simpler language. The draft has now been moved to Draft:Anton Sammut for the Articles for Creation process, and I will keep your comments in mind as the article develops. Thank you again for your advice.
— Stephen Cremona Stephen John Cremona (talk) 03:11, 16 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Stephen John Cremona. According to our reviewer software your draft is not in the queue of submitted drafts. There are 2966 awaiting review (oldest: 58 days). This process must be used by editors with a conflict of interest. You must submit your draft before there will be any development. Please do this in desktop mode only, and follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/Submitting. Getting a review can take a while, but your draft will be reviewed eventually.
Attempting to bypass the process by moving the page to mainspace, or cutting and pasting it into a new mainspace article, may lead to the page being moved back into draftspace again, speedily-deleted or listed for Articles for Deletion, and repeated attempts may lead to consequences. Declaring your COI alone may not be sufficient, please see WP:PCD.
Do bear in mind that while the reviewers' work is to advise, decline, or reject, it's not strictly within their remit to improve it, find more sources, or rewrite it into more conventional language for the general reader. Good luck. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:42, 16 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking care of this, Kudpung, while I was catching some Z's. :)

Thank you for your guidance. I have revised the draft and submitted it through the Articles for Creation process. I appreciate your time and advice.

Snooker 900 Crucible Cup

I Hello how are you doing? Can I ask will you create a page for the about event please? I have the results that I can add to the page if it is created. I would do it myself but I don't know how to if I am honest. I hope you can help. Kind Regards Ldnndrty (talk) 20:26, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi.
Passionate about snooker (I began playing nearly 70 years ago), but the focus of my work on Wikipedia is actually quite different. I only createdthe John Virgo Trophy because as a tribute to John and featuring the worlds top four veterans, it was important and no one had bothered to write the article. There is probably no need to create stand-alone stubs with complex tables for every 900 match, but you are welcome to expand the main Snooker 900 article with a bit more coverage of the Crucible Cup. I don't know how to create results templates anyway. BTW, I've redrafted the lede again to tighten it up for encyclopedic grammar and style and remove details that are already in the body. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:11, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi I want you to create a page with the title 2025 crucible cup just like you did with the 2026 John Virgo Trophy and i will do the rest. it is important because it was the first real tournament to feature main tour professionals. regards Ldnndrty (talk) 02:41, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I understand, but I do not create articles of which at the moment of creation I am not the main author or the main contributor of text at the time of creation, and it is unlikely that anyone will simply create the page title for you. Do remember that all articles on Wikipedia must be referenced to Reliable Sources. The first source I found for this contest was an English newspaper but one that is banned from its use on Wikipedia.
I suggest you read the easy instructions at Your first article and create your article as a draft: Draft:2025 crucible cup (click this red link to create the page) and then submit it to Articles for creation where it will be reviewed by the team there and published for you if it is good to go (you are welcome to send me a link to your draft and I'll check it over for you). If it isn't they will provide you with tips to improve it.
An alternative is to ask for help from the mentor who has been assigned to you on your User Home Page. You can of course create the article directly in Mainspace where it will be queued for review by the New Artticle Team, but a review will probably take several weeks and if the page is not sufficiently sourced it may be rejected or even deleted. One tip already: Ensure that the English you use is formal style appropriate for an encyclopedia. Hope all this helps. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:27, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello Kudpung - on my talk page, you said "explain why you removed certain large amounts of sourced content that I researched and added (with some effort) this morning. After 20 years as a regular contributor to WP, What did I do wrong?"

Your edits and long-term work are certainly appreciated. I made edits to achieve WP:KEEPCONCISE, and to alleviate the common user from details such as numerous brand names and composition additives, WP:TMI. Because we say that the mechanism is not well-defined, I simplified that statement based on DrugBank and the Zanasi article, which seems sufficient.

Thanks for the polite query. All the best. Zefr (talk) 02:36, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much. Actually, much of the content was already in that article including the huge list of brand names which was a bulleted list. I'm not a medic (my field was linguistcs), but I take a deep interest in what I'm being prescribed for COPD and without overdoing it I occasionally add what I would have liked to have found in an article. So believe me when I say that I am well aware that some of our scientific articles are totally beyond the comprehension of someone looking something up like a plant or a planet and expecting some useful, easily extractable information. I see you've written an article on COVID-19 drug development, Ill check it out but I probably won't understand much of it. That said, however, I'm still looking for a lot more information on the Bohringer Spialto-Respimat. It does what it says in the box - and quite well - but there is no generic (yet) and not much in the way 3rd party feedback. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:07, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

May 2026 Administrator Election – Call for Candidates

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/May 2026/Candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • April 29 – May 5: Call for candidates
  • May 8–12: Discussion phase
  • May 13–19: SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familiar with the community's expectations of administrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for admin elections candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a seven day call for candidates phase, a two day pause, a five day discussion phase, and a seven day private vote using SecurePoll. Discussion and questions are only allowed on the candidate pages during the discussion phase.
  • The outcome of this process is identical to making a request for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA versus administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. Later, a user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055).
  • The autoconfirmed user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484).

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case SchroCat has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
  • Per a recent motion, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
  • Per a recent motion, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
  • The arbitration case Maghreb has been closed.

May 2026 Administrator Elections – Discussion Phase

The discussion phase of the May 2026 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • May 8–12: Discussion phase (we are here)
  • May 13–19: SecurePoll voting phase
  • Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages are open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/May 2026/Discussion phase.

On 13 May, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for.

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

May 2026 Administrator Elections – Voting Phase

The voting phase of the May 2026 administrator elections has started and will continue until 19 May 2026 at 23:59 UTC. You can participate in the voting phase at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/May 2026/Voting phase.

As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • May 13–19: SecurePoll voting phase (we are here)
  • Scrutineering phase

In the voting phase, the candidate subpages close to public questions and discussion, and everyone who qualifies to vote has a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's vote total during the election. The suffrage requirements are similar to those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for a few days, perhaps longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (this is a good page to watchlist), and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a non-recall candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and a minimum of 20 support votes. Recall candidates must achieve 55.0% support. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Hello Kudpung,

New Page Review queue November 2025 - May 2026

Backlog update

At the time of this message, there are 15,282 articles and 32,951 redirects awaiting review.

After the January–February drive the article backlog was reduced to 15,179 articles and the redirect backlog to 19,053 respectively. Great job! However, both queues are growing rapidly and any additional reviews are highly appreciated.

2024 and 2025 NPP Awards

JTtheOG was selected as the NPP reviewer of the year for both 2024 and 2025, for reviewing the most articles amongst all reviewers.

Hey man im josh and MPGuy2824 won the Redirect Ninja Master Award for 2024 and 2025 respectively, for reviewing the most redirects.

Overall in 2024, one Platinum, two Gold, eight Silver, 12 Bronze and 45 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 66 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year. In 2025, one Platinum, ten Silver, 13 Bronze and 38 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 38 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year.

BoyTheKingCanDance, Rosiestep, SunDawn, and Vanderwaalforces were inducted into the NPP Hall of Fame for having two separate years of 2,000+ article reviews.

January–February backlog drive

The experimental two-month long backlog drive concluded with 183 reviewers patrolling over 27,761 articles and 35,309 redirects, earning over 36,836 points. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 6,484.6 points in this drive.

May backlog drive

An article-only backlog drive is currently underway. We are hoping to make a big dent in the backlog. You can read more about it or join at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Backlog drives/May 2026.

PageTriage

An attempt was made to get the New Pages Feed to sort by date marked as reviewed instead of date created. However we had to revert it due to bugs. We may try again in the future. You can subscribe to the Phabricator ticket if you're interested in following along.

Temporary account IP viewer granted

The temporary account IP viewer logo, composed of the Wikipedia globe with a user and an IP address

Hello, Kudpung. Per your request, your account has been granted temporary-account-viewer rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is only to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:

  • You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
  • Access must not be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).

It is also important to note that the following actions are logged for others to see:

  • When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
  • Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
  • Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with one or more IP addresses (using the CIDR notation format).

Remember, even if a user is violating policy, avoid revealing personal information if possible. Use temporary account usernames rather than disclosing IP addresses directly, or give information such as same network/not same network or similar. If you do not want the user right anymore then please ask me or another administrator and it will be removed for you. You may also voluntarily give up access at any time by visiting Special:Preferences. Happy editing! * Pppery * it has begun... 17:29, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

June 2026

Information icon Hello! Thank you for your recent contributions to Geraldine Sherman. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see MOS:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is just an example that I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using. Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks!
