DYK for Physella acuta

On 20 January 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Physella acuta, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the snail Physella acuta can twist its shell by up to 120 degrees to defend itself against predators? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Physella acuta. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Physella acuta), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Tips & tricks?

edit

Since you are way ahead of me when it comes to learning DYK promotions, would you care to share some tips and tricks you've learned so far? I'm still confused about the best placement for hook positions in a specific queue, for example, but I do understand how to look out for the differences between one hook and another in differeent queues. Also, I'm unclear on how to prioritize queues when I promote. Viriditas (talk) 21:20, 25 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I'm not sure I can help you. I literally only promoted three hooks one day and one had to be reworded, the other had a source verification problem, and the third was moved to another prep area to comply with the guidelines. lol.
In this sense, I really underestimated our job in quality control. It's stated in WP:DYKPROMO under "procedure".
I honestly think we'll learn prepping as we go. There's a lot to keep track of and the experienced lads and lasses know it. I got the feeling they are very patient, happy that people are interested in helping them out with the load, and also happy to help us along the way.
What I understood so far about hook placement (but I'll tell you all that's also in WP:DYKVAR): we need to make sure that the hook in the first position doesn't have an image with the same theme as another recent hook with image; the last hook is quirky, or at least positive, if possible; and everything in between can be in any position as long as it yields a varied set of themes. Themes shouldn't show up more than twice in a set and I assume they shouldn't be directly next to each other, either.
About queue prioritisation: not sure there is one always. Under "Local update times" at TM:DYKQ you can see when each prep will go live, and I reckon if that day is a theme day (I haven't found out yet where I can get this information, do let me know if you find it), then that one is handled differently. But other than that, I believe you can just work on any prep area.
But -- I believe we should just throw ourselves into it and learn as we go :) Mistakes aren't the end of the world. The more experienced editors will be there to lend a hand. Barbalalaika 🐌 11:10, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
That was helpful, so thank you. Maybe I just think it is harder than it looks. That has happened to me several times before. Then when I ended up completing the task, I was like, why was I freaking out about this? Viriditas (talk) 11:22, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Regarding how to handle "theme day", this was just answered by another editor. Viriditas (talk) 22:09, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

DYK prep

edit

Hey there Barbalalaika, thanks for your work on these preps. I see you originally put The Dance of Anitra in the picture slot for prep 6, then removed it to a different slot for prep 4, saying removed pictured hook, was a repeating theme. Just curious what the issue was? I was hoping to see that article run with a photo, since I'm quite fond of it—but I also realize that it's easy for me to say that, as one who's both biased and not the one doing the work. Cheers, - -Usernameunique (talk) 21:06, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi there! I'm a new prepper and forgot to take into account that statues of people and pictures of people fall into the same "category" when it comes to pictured DYKs. It's good practice to avoid repetition. But since I'm learning more at literally every moment, I've heard from someone else that a space of a day is fine, and prep 6 was two days apart. So I'll reinstate it. I quite fancied it as well :) Barbalalaika 🐌 21:15, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh interesting, I never would have thought of that—I was looking for another artwork that had recently ran, or was about to do so. In any event, thanks for explaining, and for restoring it to the picture slot! Cheers, --Usernameunique (talk) 21:37, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just happy to see that other people enjoy reading and writing about weird urban legends, brazilian history & folklore and/or disembodied human parts xD Parzeus (talk) 18:09, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Fascinating. @Parzeus: how much influence did the legend of saci have on the people? Was it just a coincidence or synchronicity, or did the hairy leg tap into and draw from this deeper well of stories familiar to the native people? Also, do you think the story may be overblown? I ask because after many years, scholars are beginning to reevaluate similar incidents, such as the 1938 broadcast of The War of the Worlds, which may have indeed been overblown by earlier writers. Dothistroma septosporum: Reward Board Sign-up

Hello! I saw your post on the Reward Board regarding getting Dothistroma septosporum to B-class. I would like to help in improving it. EnIRtpf09b (talk) 07:30, 7 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi there @EnIRtpf09b and sorry about the late answer. That's great, thank you so much :) The literature I gathered so far is in my work PC. I'll reply with a list of DOIs tomorrow. I really appreciate your willingness to improve the article! Barbalalaika 🐌 18:54, 11 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@EnIRtpf09b
A review of Pinaceae resistance mechanisms against needle and shoot pathogens with a focus on the Dothistroma–Pinus interaction - 10.1111/efp.12201 (this one's much more pathological, I as an ecologist found it hard to digest, but maybe still helpful)

Some UK studies:

Has Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) co-evolved with Dothistroma septosporum in Scotland? Evidence for spatial heterogeneity in the susceptibility of native provenances -- 10.1111/eva.12395
Substantial heritable variation for susceptibility to Dothistroma septosporum within populations of native British Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) -- 10.1111/ppa.12528
Pathogen impacts and implications for species diversification in UK forestry -- 10.1093/forestry/cpaf019

Other European countries:

Dothistroma Needle Blight in protected pine forests in Italy -- 10.3391/mbi.2020.11.4.05 (weird website but not predatory. It's number 5 in the list)
Dothistroma Needle Blight on High Altitude Pine Forests in Montenegro -- on ResearchGate
Dothistroma needle blight Mycosphaerella pini E. Rostrup, a new quarantine pathogen of pines in the CR -- in Journal of Forest Science, from the Czech Academy of Agricultural Sciences
New hosts for Lecanosticta acicola and Dothistroma septosporum in newly established arboreta in Spain -- 10.1111/efp.12650

D. septosporum is very similar to Lecanosticta acicola, so many studies on the lattere have some information on it:

A look into the genetic diversity of Lecanosticta acicola in northern Europe -- 10.1016/j.funbio.2019.06.012
Lecanosticta acicola: A growing threat to expanding global pine forests and plantations -- 10.1111/mpp.12853
The increasing threat to European forests from the invasive foliar pine pathogen, Lecanosticta acicola -- 10.1016/j.foreco.2023.120847

That's what I have! If you need anything or have any questions, don't hesitate to come to me :)

Barbalalaika 🐌 11:07, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the refs! I do have certain doubts about stuff but I'll discuss them once I've read all these papers. You can find a draft of the article at my sandbox. EnIRtpf09b (talk) 15:19, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
My first question. Many of the papers mention D. septosporum and D. pini as being the causal agents of the disease in question (red needle blight). However, the article lacks a mention of D. pini. Furthermore, the article seems to be written largely about the disease and not about D. septosporum. I wonder whether besides additional sources, a major rephrasing or even a WP:Move may be in order. Whatcha think? EnIRtpf09b (talk) 16:51, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Good thoughts. The article is about D. septosporum but yes, both D. septosporum and D. pini cause the illness - although much less is known about D. pini. I hadn't realised that Wikipedia lacks an article on Dothistroma needle blight (AKA red band needle blight).
On one hand, I think we can't rename an article from a fungal species to an illness. Even if most material we have is on DNB, D. septosporum and D. pini should be covered by WP:NSPECIES (although D. pini doesn't have an article yet, either).
On the other hand, moving DNB to its own article would leave D. septosporum and D. pini barebones, since there's very little on them that doesn't concern the illness. But maybe not necessarily a bad thing?
I'm not experienced with how Wikipedia handles this - Maybe that's a good topic for Wikipedia:WikiProject Fungi? They'll certainly have an opinion on how to organise this. Barbalalaika 🐌 17:50, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@EnIRtpf09b well, since no one replied to us in the Wikiproject OR in Help Desk, I'll go ahead and suggest you edit the D. septosporum article itself. The information on Needle Blight can always be moved to a new article later :) Barbalalaika 🐌 11:30, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey there! I also saw the post, and I'd be interested in helping as well (though I think it's almost ready for B-class already!).
