Re: Hudhud
edit| This section is pinned and will not be automatically archived. |
My biggest recommendation is taking what you already have and trying more searches to expand and get into more detail. A few examples:
- In the met history - "Amid favorable conditions" - what were those favorable conditions?
- You mention the weakening over land, but nothing about the changes in structure as it weakened. Not the end of the world, but something like the eye dissipating could be interesting to add, if you have sources.
- I'll check if anything like these are in the JTWC sources, and it could be expanded from those anyway. "favorable conditions" are low wind shear and high SSTs.
- "In Andhra Pradesh, 111,000 people in coastal districts were evacuated and 370 relief camps were readied" - were there any shelters? Was anything canceled/delayed because of the storm, like sport events or flights?
- Some flights were canceled across various airports, I don't think any major events were affected but I might be wrong.
- "Amid the cyclone's landfall, thousands of homes were damaged" - do you have an exact number?
- Yes, it should be in the prelim report.
- "As a result of the cyclone, 500,000 residents were moved to relief camps" - is this the same as the number of people evacuated? What are relief camps? Shelters, or something else?
- My original understanding was that these were relief camps, so to take it literally being after the cyclone. However after checking for more sources clarifying this they also use it as a substitute for storm shelters, so both of those numbers could be for evacuations. I'll remove one of them and check if there's a number from a more authoritative source like of the reports.
- "In Gantyada, 380 mm of rainfall fell " - two things. First, convert the units, and second, don't say "rainfall fell"
- Done.
- The prelim report has a lot more about effects in Andhra Pradesh on page 36-37
- Will expand from this.
- Was anything washed away by the floods?
- A few poles, some weakly built homes, roads
- You have a picture of a collapsed bridge but never mention anything about bridge or road damage.
- "In Uttar Pradesh, rainfall killed 18 and caused damage to homes and crops." - that's more than Odisha, which has its own section. Why were the effects so bad here?
- Found a source that goes into more detail about this. There's also I found for more impacts.
- Were there any preparations in Nepal?
- Unsure, couldn't find anything.
- Were there impacts in West Bengal or Bangladesh?
- "Naidu sought ₹20,000,000,000 (US$240 million) from the central government, while the government of Odisha sought ₹7,771,200,000 (US$92 million) and also requested a team to assess damages in the state." - was this ever received? It's one thing to seek money but it's important they receive it for it to count as aftermath.
The article is in decent shape right now, but I think you're still scratching the surface as far as research. See if any of my tips above help you. As for where to find the info, a lot of it is going to be through Google, or a newspaper archive. Have you signed up for the Wikipedia library yet? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:12, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- Converted all the precipitation units and removed the "rainfall fell" part. I'll respond to all the other ones later (just noting that I saw this). HurricaneZetaC 22:10, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hurricanehink Responded to all of your suggestions in italics and will get to implementing them in the article tomorrow. I do have access to the library and newspapers.com as well - where should I be looking in there? HurricaneZetaC 00:24, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
- Either the Newspaperarchive or newspapers.com, both will be useful. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:28, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
The article is looking better, but it doesn't feel like the impact section for a storm that did $11 billion in damage. Especially when one of only three AP paragraphs is about a single university. For example, how many homes in Andhra Pradesh were damaged/destroyed? You say "impacted", but that doesn't mean much. Rainfall on a house is technically impact.
- This part makes no sense btw:
- On 14 October, The Hindu described the state of most "academic buildings" as "unapproachable".
- In general, avoid using quotes unless it's a really good quote describing the storm damage. I don't know why "academic buildings" is in quotes, it's not that interesting of a phrase or term.
- Also, you still have preparations and aftermath in the impact section.
- "All flights there had been suspended"
- "The storm's eye passed over National Highway 9, and residents traveling on highways like it were extricated by local police and NDRF members after getting trapped in their vehicles." - this is really clunky, awkward, and almost none of it is needed. The interesting part is that people were trapped in their vehicles, so how many people were trapped?
- You have a habit of getting into lists, for example, "27,041 electric poles, 1,526 substations, and 7,300 transformers and substations were damaged." You should reword it as: "Hudhud caused widespread power outages in Andhra Pradesh affecting [X number] of people, after damaging 27,041 electric poles." I wouldn't even mention the substations or transformers, as it's not a good example of damage. I had to look up what a substation and a transformer was, and even then, I don't think knowing the exact number of substations or transformers adds context to the storm's damage.
Related to the last part, you need to find ways of making the information interesting, not just listing every piece of information you can find. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 06:08, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Hurricanehink
- For the houses the report says "affected", which isn't clear on what it means. I can't find a report that says how many were damaged/destroyed specifically.
- Removed the quotes around academic buildings, should I remove the entire thing?
- Moved the flight suspensions to preparations, and I can't find how many were trapped but I trimmed it to
Residents traveling on highways were extricated by local police and NDRF members after getting trapped in their vehicles.
- Also don't know how many people were affected, so I rephrased it to
Hudhud caused widespread power outages in Andhra Pradesh due to it damaging 27,041 electric poles.
- Looking back on the section I saw I went to lists at
2,446,532 livestock—2,831 larger animals and 2,443,701 poultry—also died.
,1,110 fishing boats and 2,219 nets were lost. 33 drinking wells and 39.4 km (24.5 mi) of water lines were also damaged, along with 197 water towers and 102 pumping stations.
, and basically listing numbers likeMonetary damages to it were assessed to be near ₹5,000,000,000 (US$81.93 million).
Should I rephrase those as well? HurricaneZetaC 16:03, 13 March 2026 (UTC)- First off regarding the houses - this source says more than 40,000 houses damaged. So you probably should do more research to find other damage totals. It might not all be in the IMD report.
- Don't remove the whole section about academic buildings, but be sure to list the actual damage. The quote from The Hindu adds nothing. "the roofs of all 16 canteens were stripped, and the walls of six structures gave way" - this is actual damage.
- See if you can find the number of trapped people in vehicles.
- Again, see if you can find the number of people affected by power outages. That's standard info you see in a lot of storm articles.
- "2,446,532 livestock—2,831 larger animals and 2,443,701 poultry—also died." - too specific and listy. If you want to specify the larger animals, I'd say "2,446,532 livestock also died, including 2,831 larger animals". But even that is a bit clunky. See if you can find a way to describe farm damage in general, and have a paragraph for that, so the deceased animals flows better.
- "1,110 fishing boats and 2,219 nets were lost." - why were the lost fishing nets important? Unless you go into further detail about how the fishermen were affected by the storm, then this is just fluff and doesn't add anything to the context of the storm's damage.
- "33 drinking wells and 39.4 km (24.5 mi) of water lines were also damaged" - I'd say the water lines is probably more important, but how many people were affected by water outages?
- Also, the damage total is in the aftermath section for some reason, but the $11 billion should be in the impact section. Also missing is some kind of India summary paragraph. You instead go state by state. Hope all of this helps! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:19, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Hurricanehink so what should go in the India summary paragraph? Damage that's listed in sources as occurring in multiple states without being separated or just sources covering the damage in the country broadly? HurricaneZetaC 15:49, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
- Yea, overall damage total, the total number of houses damaged/destroyed (if you have that), the death toll in India, sources that cross multiple states, that sorta stuff. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:40, 14 March 2026 (UTC)

G12 tagging
editHi, and thanks for reporting a the copyright violation at Bylines Cymru . I have deleted it. For future reference, there is no need to blank the page after applying the G12 tagging. In fact, it makes it more difficult for the reviewing admin to assess. The G12 tag has a link the Earwig's copyvio tool which will compare the source text to the text in the article. By blanking the article, there is no article to text to compare, and the reviewing admin needs to go into the history to get the revision number that still has the copyrighted text to reconfigure the comparison tool. Regards, Whpq (talk) 19:15, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- Ah, alright. Thanks! HurricaneZetaC 19:01, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
