Welcome!

We are revisiting Religion and Spirituality this May for the first time in a few years. Whilst we typically cover this topic in December, there are many religious celebrations in May. Jews celebrate Shavuot, Buddhists celebrate Vesak, Muslims celebrate the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah, and Christians celebrate Ascension Day and Pentecost. It will also be the first anniversary of Leo XIV's papacy.

In alignment with WikiProject Women in Religion, who now have over 9,000 articles, we are broadening the scope beyond religion to incorporate other beliefs and spiritual traditions from around the world.

We hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in creating biographies and other articles about women in religion and spirituality. This virtual editathon allows enthusiasts wherever they may be to participate in our initiative. Contributors are of course also welcome to add articles on any other women who deserve to be covered, for example under our #1day1woman priority.

The main goals of the event are:

  • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of prominent women
  • to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action on combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
  • to promote the new/improved articles and images through social media and via nominations to Main Page features Did You Know…? and In The News.
Thank you!
