Nate Wilbourne

Could someone have a look at the editing history of this article? It seems strange to me. I don't want to cast any aspersions, but it is odd seeing so many single-purpose accounts expanding the article. This article seems to be expanded a lot more than other articles with similar page views. The images being freely licensed on Wikimedia Commons also makes me suspicious, especially considering that the images were marked as "own work"s by the people who have expanded the article, with two images being created by a user named "Natewilbournee". ―Panamitsu (talk) 08:52, 2 January 2026 (UTC)

There is quite obvious COI editing with that article, with a promotional tone to the edits and reliance on sources from the subject himself. I'd suggest stripping out most detail from the subject himself that isn't mundane basic information and just summarising the independent news sources. Traumnovelle (talk) 19:28, 2 January 2026 (UTC)

I agree with Traumnovelle. The article is so promotional it is almost a WP:TNT candidate. The subject appears to pass GNG though so I don't think deleting it is a realistic choice. You could nuke out most of the non-independent sources and replace them with {{citation needed}}, and then wait a bit and start deleting anything without a citation per WP:BLP. There are multiple editors who have contributed to this article who have a contribution history showing few or no other articles. This suggests that people close to the subject could be involved. However, this is speculation, and I think it is best to focus on the content and make changes as required to create a more encylopedic tone. I agree that content that is cited only to the website about the subject should be challenged and removed unless (a) it is just basic facts or (b) the content can be readily supported by an independent and reliable published source - and if it can, then the cite to the self-published source can be removed. The biography and education sections are well supported by reliable independent sources (multiple Stuff articles), so the promotional refs in those bits can just be stripped out. Regarding TNT, one possible way forward is:

• declare that you are going to rewrite the article from scratch
• put a copy into your user space to have a record of the sources
• delete everything that needs to be redone (maybe keep sections noted above, unless the prose is too promotional)
• once you get going, I’ll delete the article history

Aotearoa New Zealand virtual Wiki meetup day and time change

As an outcome of the Jan 4th meetup a discussion was undertaken by the attendees about the timing and date of these meetings due to previous feedback from WANZ members unable to attend on Sundays. Feedback from participants of that meeting was that the noon time broke up the day disruptively and members wanted to the meeting to be earlier - preferably at 10am. The attendees also discussed a Saturday meeting or alternatively a rotating meeting using Saturday and then Sunday. After a discussion, attendees agreed to trial a regular Saturday meeting starting on the 24th of January at 10am to avoid clashes with both the Wellington and Auckland in person meetings. The virtual meeting will continue to be held once every four weeks. This change in time and date will be again be discussed at the 24th of January meeting and feedback will again be gathered from attendees. If interested parties are unable to attend but wish to add their views as to the change in time and date they can do so in the "Future Meetings" section of the agenda for that meetup. Help needed with death date on Ray Boord

The lede of the article and infobox give two different death dates (3 April 1982 and 29 April 1982) for New Zealand politician Ray Boord. The body of the article with a citation just gives the month. Notes from the Aotearoa New Zealand meetup on Sat 24th of Jan

Here are the completed notes for the 24th of Jan Aotearoa New Zealand online meet up. During this meeting Sophie from WANZ presented on the survey she conducted of members to find out preferred day and times for future meetings. See her slide deck here. Attendees at the meeting reached a consensus that given the almost even majority preference results (46% Saturday, 43% Sunday and 43% Alternating Sat/Sun) the meetings should be held alternating weekend days to allow those unable to attend on certain weekend days to at least have an opportunity to attend some meetings. The survey indicated a preference for a 10am meeting start time with 68% of participants preferring that time. The survey also indicated 57% would prefer the meeting be 1hr 30min in length. The group agreed that the schedule should be formed for the whole year to ensure meeting dates were known in advance and to assist with planning of regional meet ups and editathon. WANZ news and newsletter

How many people here are unaware of the News section on the WANZ website? Or was that just me until about a year ago? I feel that not enough attention is being brought to it and would like to suggest that someone post on this noticeboard whenever a news item is released, because—well maybe I'm wrong—but I don't imagine that many people read it. I would be happy to post news notifications on the NZ notice board, but I still have no idea how to get notified whenever a new news item is released. Is that even a thing? Here are some options:

1. Post on the notice board. This will get people who are interested in NZ Wikipedia stuff to see the articles, but could 'clog up' the notice board, filling it with content that isn't about NZ editing matters (not sure if this is a bad thing or not).
2. We could have a page like the NZ Article alerts that lists all the new posts and people can see on their watchlist when new posts are published. This would solve the above problem with the notice board.
3. Mediawiki message delivery on user talk pages could work but might be annoying for the non-newsletter news items when they are posted days apart (eg recently there were two posts on 27 January and another on 26 January). Message delivery might be good for the newsletter as that is released once a month and wouldn't get annoying. But this might not be useful for people who get emailed the newsletters.
4. Mediawiki emails might be useful for the newsletter and non-newsletter posts.

In the sunny days of the early internet there was this plan to reuse content via the RSS and OAI-PMH. Do any of the current generation of wiki tools support either of these protocols? Being able to write the content in one place and have it appear in others as appropriate would be very useful. How do we say Peter Sinclair (broadcaster) was gay without saying he was gay?

It's like everyone knew it, but he never publicly said anything about it. He just didn't want to talk about it publicly or be any kind of public gay icon or spokesman which is totally fair enough. But that leaves us with the question of how to deal with it on Wikipedia. Maybe he's been dead long enough that we don't have to skirt around it so much per WP:BLP? Another example of a Kiwi who 'everyone knew' was gay, but whose Wikipedia page makes no mention of it is Max Cryer. In both cases, the person chose to keep this private, and without a reliable source, we shouldn't mention it. Fran Collett

The current New Zealand Listener (dated 14 February 2026, with the cover story "Cover Up! Sex, Politics and Spies"), covers the career of NZ's first woman reporter in the Parliamentary press gallery on pp 16–23, although overly emphasizing the lurid details. This would make a great resource if anyone would be interested in writing a Wikipedia article about her. There's a brief mention of her in Te Ara: The Encyclopedia of New Zealand: Press gallery: first woman reporter and at the National Library of New Zealand: Collett, Bebe Fran, 1936-1972. As far as I can see, the Listener article is not online (and would be subscription only, but I have a sub). February 2026 New Zealand storms

Was wondering if I should do an article on the February 2026 New Zealand storms. There has been at least one death from a driver whose car was submerged in the North Island. There have been states of emergency being declared in five districts, some communities being isolated by flood damage to roads and infrastructure and a landslide in Musselburgh, Dunedin. Dated sub categorisations in Category:New Zealand people of World War I

If you look at Category:New Zealand people of World War I, there are three subcats, Category:New Zealand women in World War I, Category:New Zealand military personnel of World War I and Category:New Zealand anti–World War I activists. There are three separate issues with this: (a) Category:New Zealand women in World War I is largely made up of female nurses; but these people were organised as units of the military, so they should be under Category:New Zealand military personnel of World War I, but they largely aren't. This is a classic gender assumption, which was admittedly reflected the media of the time. (b) People like Archibald Baxter were regarded by the state as Category:New Zealand military personnel of World War I (given uniforms, pay books, placed on troop ships, etc, etc) but regarded by themselves as Category:New Zealand anti–World War I activists. I think they should be in both cats, but they're not. (c) New Zealand's war effort was led by politicians who declared, promoted, funded and legislated the war, I believe that these people are at least as much "New Zealand people of World War I" as the nurses and activists. (d) Many New Zealanders served in Non New Zealand military units, I think we need Category:New Zealand people of World War I serving in foreign militaries. Thoughts? Australia has similar categories within Category:Australian people of World War I. However, Category:Australian anti–World War I activists is not linked to that category at all. Category:British people of World War I also has a similar but better-developed structure, and Category:British anti–World War I activists is a member of it. Based on this, it looks like the NZ categories are within Wikipedia norms, and any change proposal might benefit from wider consultation, perhaps with Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/World War I task force.-Gadfium (talk) 22:14, 22 February 2026 (UTC)

Seeking Wikipedians in Oāmaru or Invercargill

In researching Hospital picture tiles I've found there are tiles in the hospitals in Oāmaru and Invercargill. After reading the article, and observing the gallery, the Invercargill ones are in quite a different style to the ones pictured. The sets of tiles are more set out like comic strips than the formal illustrations on many of the images. Daveosaurus (talk) 23:52, 13 March 2026 (UTC)

Import pipeline for Auckland Libraries' Kura platform?

Kia ora all, as a bit of a fun side project for myself, I've been tinkering around with the API for the underlying platform that Auckland Libraries uses for Kura (CONTENTdm). Had this project on the backburner for a while, but I've gotten to the point where I have a little Python bulk downloader that can pull everything from a collection that has CC BY or PD or whatever. I would not recommend this, mass uploads almost always go poorly. We recently had to delete hundreds of images mass-uploaded from Auckland Museum that were not PD in the US. Traumnovelle (talk) 08:37, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

yes, I'm vaguely aware that PD status in the US is a complete landmine of problems. to be fair, Auckland Libraries doesn't have an explicit public domain label, just 'No known copyright restrictions' which can be dubious in some instances, i.e. I've seen this invitation from 1976 which claims no copyright, and a contradicting copy of a Bruce Ringer picture where he has put one copy as CC BY and another 'no restrictions' copy as part of the Footprints Collection, which he compiled.

long story short yes PD in the States is a landmine, but having a look, it appears AL's usage of the 'No known copyright restrictions' label is itself also a landmine. the script isn't really built as something that should be run unsupervised, though it's just a downloader and doesn't shoot anything onto Commons. I have cut back Tom Sutherland (sport shooter) to a one-sentence stub as entirely unsourced. Here is the article as it was before I cut it back. I tried to find substantive sources, but was unsuccessful.

I found one passing mention of someone by that name at this source dating to 1966, but that's about it. Maybe someone with access to newspaper accounts of Commonwealth Games from the 60s and 70s will be able to find something. If not, it should be brought to Afd.

Moetara

Hey, everyone. Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it does relate to two articles within this Wikiproject's scope: Moetara and his brother Rangatira Moetara. I was looking through some sources about Rangatira to expand the article and found one from the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography (1940). Scholefield has stated that: "Moetara died about Sep 1864 and Rangatira on 1 Nov 1880." I thought this piece of information would be useful, given that Rangatira's article doesn't have a death date. However, I soon realised that Moetara's stated death date goes against what other reliable sources, such as Te Ara, state, as well as his Wikipedia article: "Moetara died on 23 December 1838." After which, Rangatira succeeded him as rangatira of Ngāti Korokoro. I decided to hold fire on adding the death date source to Rangatira Moetara for the lack of reliability that Scholefield's account has given, and whether Moetara died in Sep. 1838 or 23 Dec. 1864. I've done some quick reading of Papers Past and my best guess (as a non-expert) is that Scholefield may have misinterpreted one of his sources. Scholefield here https://nzhistory.govt.nz/sites/default/files/documents/dnzb-1940/scholefield-dnzb-v2.pdf on p.88 gives one of his sources as C. O. Davis. Davis in 1929 in an article about Patuone here https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/FRTIM19290130.2.24 and here https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/FRTIM19290201.2.35 republished a biography of Moetara first published in September 1864 (which Scholefield may have thought was a reference to an obituary?) but which later refers to Moetara having "expired in about the fortieth year of his age", with the date not given but placed between the raising of the first New Zealand flag (in c. 1834) and the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (1840). • We have some changes to our management board, with one board member preparing to step down shortly, and three new members welcomed onto the board.
• WANZ is teaming up with Wikimedia Australia for the 2026 #1Lib1Ref campaign, 15 May to 5 June.
• A local Wikimedian recently discovered that content and images from Wikimedia is being used by Air New Zealand for their in-flight entertainment screens.
• We have less than a month until our annual conference takes place in Wellington, and there are still some spaces available — tickets are $20 NZD.

Open Christchurch 2026

Open Christchurch is on again this year! Unfortunately it clashes with Wikicon, but for those of us remaining in Ōtautahi, Architecture + Women will be running a Wiki workshop at Tūranga on Sunday 3 May 2026. There have already been half a dozen signups so it would be great to get more Wiki-folk along to support and welcome newbies.

Non-Kiwi athletes playing in New Zealand

Just a quick question. If I create an article for a non-New Zealand athlete or sportsperson playing for a professional sports team in New Zealand, do they qualify for this Wikiproject whilst they're playing in New Zealand, or do they only qualify for the Wikiproject of their home country? I.e. can I add the NZ Wikiproject banner shell to their talk page? Thanks. JaumeBG (talk) 11:20, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

There was a similar discussion on this topic in May 2025. I opined: "If you study in NZ for a few years and graduate, I'd say that's formative for a person. In my view, inclusion in WPNZ is then justified. Being an exchange student for a year, say, wouldn't cut it in my view."

Hence, a season played in NZ would not cut it. A longer stay in the country might be formative. In the end, it will be a judgment call. What do others think? Schwede66 18:16, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

I agree in principal; a single season isn't enough, multiple seasons are. However, articles usually get added to WikiProjects when they are first created - I see them at the WP:NNZ report - and we don't know yet whether an athlete such as Ellie Walker will stay for more than one season.

Option 1: we add WPNZ to such an article, and potentially it can be removed later although in practice that rarely happens

Option 2: we don't add it, and potentially someone might add it later, which is marginally more likely than in option 1.-Gadfium (talk) 20:49, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

Slightly interesting thing about claimed NZ PhD

I found this somewhat interesting User talk:~2026-25572-43#Charles R. Pellegrino but I don't think there's much we can do at least as Wikipedians. It's true there's a thesis available which says in the item page "vuwschema.type.vuw: Awarded Doctoral Thesis" but that could potentially be an input error. I suspect it's not normal for thesis which were rejected to be put in the library so it it's true a PhD was never awarded, it might be the only reason this one is there is because of the unusual case. If someone has access to the digitised copy and especially if they can find the original copy in the library, it would be interesting to see if there's any indication whether a PhD was awarded or not. Also if someone could be bothered going through the university calendars for the likely years the PhD may have been awarded. But the thing is whatever anyone finds, I don't think there's much we can do as Wikipedians. Personally if there was strong indication a PhD was awarded at some stage, I'd be much more conducive to removing anything about the PhD even if it has been reported in quite a few RS, I'm just not sure others will. I doubt finding OR indications a PhD was not awarded will discourage the TA despite their own desire to use OR. Nil Einne (talk) 10:03, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

I have been able to download the thesis, but there's no indication it was awarded; the title page simply say it was Submitted for the degree of Ph.D. in Zoology at the Victoria University of Wellington. nil ^nz 10:16, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

We have an 2010 interview with his PhD supervisor in a reliable source that states clearly that although Pellegrino submitted that thesis, the unanimous opinion of his committee was that a PhD could not be awarded—a very unusual state of affairs. Pellegrino's own account of the matter seems to be a fantasy. I can't see why this open-and-shut, clearly-explained case should be so contested. And we certainly shouldn't remove anything about his non-PhD from the article—the affair was so newsworthy at the time it was reported in several separate stories in multiple papers.
