Categories

edit

Hello. Regarding this recent edit of yours , I noticed you attempted to add items directly to a category page.

In Wikipedia, we do not add articles to a category by editing the category page, we add them by editing the individual articles' pages and linking the category from there. Please see Wikipedia:FAQ/Categorization#How do I add an article to a category? For newer editors, it's understandably a counter-intuitive system.

Category pages are not intended to be exhaustive lists. In fact, they are not really lists at all in the sense they only display subjects with Wikipedia pages. They are navigation aids; merely groupings of related, existing English Wikipedia pages.

To categorize a page, first make sure the page actually belongs to the category. Then, go to the page you wish to categorize and add the category at the bottom of the page with the other categories. For instructions on how to do this using VisualEditor, see Help:VisualEditor § Editing categories.

For further detailed information, see Help:Category and Wikipedia:Categorization. Let me know if you need any assistance or have any questions. Cheers! --DB1729 (talk) 15:22, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Your submission at Articles for creation: sandbox (July 22)

edit
Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by Theroadislong was:
This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.
The comment the reviewer left was:
please see WP:REFB for help with correctly formatting sources.
Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit after they have been resolved.

I am perplexed. Perhaps you can assist. Nelly Sfeir Gonzalez was founder and editor of the Bolivian Studies Journal, a peer reviewed academic journal. She was elected president of SALALM, a librarian association with international membership. She wrote 5 books, two of which won national awards. Why exactly did you reject her so quickly? Go to Amazon and input her name. Open the Bolivian Studies Journal and see her listed as an Editor Emeritus. Go to Past winners of Jose Toribio Medina Award on the SALALM website and see her name listed. In any case, please assist in editing the page. You seem to be over eager to close the door. You value highly your power to deny access. But in this case your zeal is mis placed. Please go back and re read the page more carefully. There are book reviews cited, etc. I am curious about your own professional background. Might you have your own Wikipedia page? Sincerely, Xavier Serif (talk) 19:10, 22 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Gonzalez may well be notable but your draft was very poorly sourced and was also a copyright infringement so has been deleted. My own professional background is completely irrelevant. Theroadislong (talk) 19:53, 22 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

If poorly sourced, who can assist with sourcing? What exactly is basis for copyright infringement? This appears to be a new claim made after first draft rejected. Put aside your hurt pride and assist in advancing human knowledge. Please specify what you think is copyright infringement to give opportunity for correction. Your professional background is relevant when evaluating the merits of an academic librarian’s career accomplishments…

Xavier Serif (talk) 21:02, 22 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
I declined your draft because of poor sourcing, I am not an admin so cannot see the content of your draft now, User:Jimfbleak deleted your draft Draft:Nelly Esther Sfeir de Gonzalez for copyright infringement of https://www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/19245649/Nelly-Sfeir-Gonzalez you will need to contact them for details. Once again my professional background is NOT relevant when evaluating the merits of an academic librarian’s career. Theroadislong (talk) 21:11, 22 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Theroadislong, Thanks for ping, I'll reply below Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:05, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Just weighing in here as the admin who tagged it. @Xavier Serif you may not copy/paste published sources. Whether or not she's notable has no merit on that. You must draw from sources and write in your own words. Besides being copyright violations, the tone is inappropriate for an encyclopedia article. Please disclose your conflict of interest appropriately and perhaps leave this for a neutral editor. Star Mississippi 01:18, 24 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Nelly Esther Sfeir de Gonzalez

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Nelly Esther Sfeir de Gonzalez requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/19245649/Nelly-Sfeir-Gonzalez. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you have a conflict of interest, you must declare it. Please don't write about your friends, relatives or colleagues, and read the guidance below:

  • When you write about a person, you must provide independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that they meet the notability guidelines. Sources that are not acceptable include those linked to the person or an associated organisation, press releases, YouTube, IMDB, social media and other sites that can be self-edited, blogs, websites of unknown or non-reliable provenance, and sites that are just reporting what the person claims or interviewing them. Note that references should be in-line so we can tell what fact each is supporting, and should not be bare urls.
  • It's hard to make sense of your supposed refs, none are formatted correctly, most don't have links or have links that don't go anywhere useful, many are inappropriate, including blogs and an on-line encyclopaedia, many are repeated. A obituary in a local newspaper is also unlikely to be a good source.
  • It's unclear whether she meets notablity guidelines, you list honours, but they are unsourced and nothing to suggest the awards are notable themselve
  • You must write in a non-promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic, with verifiable facts, not opinions or reviews.
  • The whole text has a gossip column style, eg Growing up, Nelly preferred to play “cops and robbers,” shoot marbles, jump rope and spin the top with her older brother Pepe rather than play “tea time” with dolls with her younger sister Yola, which Nelly did nevertheless to please her.. How does that make "Nelly" notable? Then there's outright spamming like the groundbreaking peer-reviewed Bolivian Studies Journal beginning in 2002. This journal has established itself as the premier international academic journal in its subject matter.
  • There shouldn't be any url links in the article, only in the "References" or "External links" sections.
  • You must not copy text from elsewhere. Copyrighted text is not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the text is public domain. We require that text posted here can be used, modified and distributed for any purpose, including commercial; text is considered to be copyright unless explicitly stated otherwise. There are ways to donate copyrighted text to Wikipedia, as described here; please note that simply asserting on the talk page that you are the owner of the copyright, or you have permission to use the text, isn't sufficient.

Your text was also badly underlinked, and you should use standard English capitalisation. The primary reason for deletion was that it was largely copied from a page marked © 2017-2022 Tribute Archive. All rights reserved. Before attempting to write an article again, please make sure that the topic meets the notability criteria linked above, and check that you can find independent third party sources. Also read Your first article. You must also reply to the COI request above. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:34, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please refrain from promotional editing and avoid turning pages into directories. ~ Pbritti (talk) 20:04, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your concern Pbritti. Regarding your concern about turning pages into directories-- prior to your recent wholesale deletions of two days ago, the Sfeir surname list inlcuded the names of 61 persons. Please take a look at the Wallace surname list on Wikipdia-- it has 299 names. Moreover, such Wikipedia page has only three sources, one of which is from the Wallace Society. Do you consider that promotional editing? (I do not) How do you reconcile that? It is also curious and unfortunate that you find a sentence referencing the spread of the Sfeir name beyond its place of origin through the Lebanese Diaspora (for which there is a separate Wikipedia page in existence) to be objectionable, unsourced, subect to confict of interest, and promotional. It is simply a statement of fact, which is patently obvious just looking at the list of people on the Sfeir surname list that you yourself choose not to include in your wholesale deletions. There is Alfredo Sfeir from Chile, Dahd Sfeir from Uruguay, there is Andree Sfeir-Semler from Germany....And you decide not to delete Samir Sfeir, for which there is currently no Wikipedia page in existence but you do decide to delete Claude Sfeir, who is all over google and featured in publications such as the the New York Times?. Just because I contributed that edit? This is irrational. By the way, I have no family, friendship or commercial connection to Mr. Claude Sfeir. I have never met with him or communicated with him in my life. One has to wonder if you have a bias against the Sfeir family. Xavier Serif (talk) 05:48, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your assistance Pbritti. Regarding sourcing, i count 43 soures cited. Why did you delete those? I can understand deleting unsourced text--but deleting every single edit I made over several years... that is hard to understand. You have also deleted links to pre-existing wikipedia pages for Paul Sfeir, Valeria Sffeir and Jean Salim Sfeir--pages which I had nothing to do in creating them and actually have never contributed edits to those pages. Why are you throwing out the baby with the bath water. You have also deleted text from the Sfeir surname wikipedia page that I did not contribute--others contributed them. Please be more focused in your editing targets rather than applying an all or nothing approach. Xavier Serif (talk) 05:34, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Information icon Hello. Your recent edit to Sfeir appears to have added a non-notable entity to a list that normally includes only notable entries. In general, a person, organization or product added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. If you wish to create such an article, please first confirm that the subject qualifies for a separate, stand-alone article according to Wikipedia's notability guideline. Thank you. Jay8g [VTE] 06:15, 27 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your note. i believe that you are acting in good faith but that you are mistaken. Please see WP;NLIST (Notability of lists): "An entry in a list is not required to be notable; it is sufficient that the entry has verifiable information that is relevant to the list topic." Xavier Serif (talk) 05:31, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
No advertising, publicizing, or promoting is going on. This is merely a good faith effort to reflect the world wide spread of the Sfeir name, part of what is called the Lebanese Diaspora (please see Wikipedia article on this subject) Xavier Serif (talk) 05:28, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
The correct guideline in this case is WP:APORED, which states that you should Write the article first; in other words, not include red links or people without Wikipedia articles.
It definitely appears that you are a WP:SPA dedicated to promoting people with the name Sfeir, which I'll note is similar to your username. Other people have pointed this out before, including @Pbritti just a few months ago, and you continue to evade the question of why you are doing this. Jay8g [VTE] 06:28, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Dear Editor--
WP:APORED is a shortcut for the Wikipedia essay Red links in article text. An essay is not a formal Wikipedia policy or guideline, as it has not been throughly vetted by the community. The proper principle to apply here is WP:NLIST (Notability of lists): "An entry in a list is not required to be notable; it is sufficient that the entry has verifiable information that is relevant to the list topic."
By the way, in your haste to delete all my contributions, you even deleted several entries that are designated in red and are clearly both notable and verifiable and thus meriting their own stand alone Wikipedia pages-- for example Claude Sfeir and Jorge Augusto Cavero Sfeir. Why this inconsistency?
As I have stated before, I am not promoting people with the name Sfeir; I am building and expanding the knowledge base of Wikipedia to more accurately describe the surname Sfeir. So, I am promoting full and comprehensive knowledge. That is what an encyclopedia is about. Xavier Serif (talk) 09:47, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
You are clearly not here to build an encyclopedia. Your additions to that page have included passages terminating in citations wholly unrelated to the content they are supposed to verify. In the rare instance where there is more than a coincidental relationship between the citation and your additions, the citation is to a website of no reliability whatsoever. You also appear to be utilizing LLMs to assist you in your edit warring. Stop now. ~ Pbritti (talk) 12:38, 29 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
