New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
editHello Vincelord,

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Your DEFAULTSORT activities
editWikipedia always appreciates users who take it upon themselves to do the drudgery of little technical tasks like inserting DEFAULTSORT instructions, as you often do, but somehow it seems to me that you might be unclear on just how DEFAULTSORT instructions work. The whole idea is to show the wiki how the article title should be sorted in alphabetical lists, such as categories. The en:WP uses the English 26-letter scheme, and therefore letters with diacritics, or special characters present a problem, as they are not sorted the same way as the usual 26 letters. In DEFAULTSORT instructions, these must be changed to accommodate the English 26-letter scheme. Any mark on a letter must be eliminated. Thus, "É" must become "E", "Ç" must become "C", "Ø" must become "O", "Ğ" must become "G", "Ü" must become "U" and so on. Also, the German "ß" must become "ss", the Spanish "Ñ" must become "N", and ligature characters like "Æ" and "Œ" must become "Ae" and "Oe" respectively. Please be sure to make these changes in all further DEFAULTSORT instructions.
There is one other thing: You must learn how Spanish names work. People from Spanish-speaking countries often use two surnames. When they do, it is the first surname by which they must be sorted, as this is the father's family name, and is thus considered the bearer's family name, too. So, an article about somebody named José Ibáñez López must have the text "Ibanez Lopez, Jose" (notice also lack of little marks!) in the DEFAULTSORT instruction, because his family name is Ibáñez, not López.
Thank you.Kelisi (talk) 02:47, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- I need clarification on how to do DEFAULTSORT to the article Julius Fucik. How should it be listed. I'm confused over issues like this and would it to be resolved. I thank you for your time if you're able to help. Vincelord (talk) 17:26, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- First of all, the title should read "Julius Fučík", with the marks, but the DEFAULTSORT should read "Fucik, Julius" — without marks. Kelisi (talk) 21:03, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- Kelisi, a correction regarding
letters with diacritics, [...] present a problem, as they are not sorted the same way as the usual 26 letters
: letters with diacritics are sorted together with their English alphabet counterparts since 2016. Quote from WP:SORTKEY:In English Wikipedia, sort order merges (ignores) case and diacritics. For example, "Baé", "Båf", "BaG" would be sorted in that order.
- However, it is still a good idea to follow this practice (which isn't codified, by the way, see recent discussion), and replace/convert even such letters with diacritics just for the sake of consistency. —andrybak (talk) 18:03, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

Since you removed #DEFAULTSORT typos from 2 days ago, I figured you would have read it. However, you then immediately made at least 2 more typos . If you do not realize that you are making obvious typos, and/or you are unable to copy and paste the name from the title into the edit box, then you should seek other activity on Wikipedia. WP:Competence is required in your chosen endeavors. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 18:49, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- What typos am I making? Vincelord (talk) 18:50, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

- on Antoinette Roberson you wrote: Robertson, Antoniett
- on Bonko Khoza you wrote: Khoza, Bonka
- on Patrick Leahy (doctor) you wrote Leary, Patrick
- on Lawrence Oyor you wrote Oyor, Lawerence
- on Jelloul Ben Cherifa you wrote Chefifa, Jelloul Ben
- Please be more careful when editing, or stop making edits in areas in which you have not exhibited competence. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 19:07, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- On Björn Grossmann you wrote Grossman, Bjorn just now after your latest response here. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 19:16, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- Your typos go back a long time. On Jeffrey M. Fleming in April 2022 you wrote Fleming, Jeffery M.. Please leave this task to more capable editors. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 11:14, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- Today on Stephanie Hegarty you wrote Hegarty, Stphanie, not to mention many special characters that ignore #Your DEFAULTSORT activities above. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 22:29, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- As of 2026 April 22, I found 13,587 mainspace edits of yours related to DEFAULTSORT. Of these 13,587, I checked the DEFAULTSORT of 11,241 binomial-name pages matching
First LastandFirst Last (disambiguator). Of those 11,241, I fixed 480 typos, Latinized 35 diacritics, and added 7 omissions, for a total of 522 corrections. - Of the 2,346 remaining non-binomial pages, I found 99 with errors. They are @ User:Tom.Reding/User:Vincelord DEFAULTSORT cleanup along with their respective DEFAULTSORTs. These need to be fixed manually, since there are many possible exceptions (i.e. multiple correct sortkeys for each page).
- Total errors amount to 621, or an error rate of 4.57% ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 17:39, 24 April 2026 (UTC)

- Friedrich Carl von Gram bad DEFAULTSORT: Gram, Fridrich Carl von

edit
Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Stephanie Hegarty. Your edits appear to be disruptive and have been or will be reverted.
- If you are engaged in an article content dispute with another editor, please discuss the matter with the editor at their talk page, or the article's talk page, and seek consensus with them. Alternatively, you can read Wikipedia's dispute resolution page, and ask for independent help at one of the relevant noticeboards.
- If you are engaged in any other form of dispute that is not covered on the dispute resolution page, please seek assistance at Wikipedia's Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents.

If you continue to disrupt Wikipedia, as you did at Nancy Mérienne, you may be blocked from editing. And Karel Korytář. You edited a valid DEFAULTSORT by adding diacritics, which are not allowed, as you have been warned of multiple times above @ #Your DEFAULTSORT activities. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 18:49, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you disrupt Wikipedia, as you did at Draft:Joy Brown (American sculptor). You wrote Joe instead of Joy. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 16:12, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
Administrator intervention
editVincelord has expressed their good intentions, but has continued exhibiting the same behavior and carelessness. They are an experienced editor of 15 years with over 117,000 edits, and has been warned many times.
@Asilvering: you're the last admin to have edited here, so I'd like to ask if you would be willing to intervene should Vincelord's behavior continue, instead of me going to WP:AN/I. If you're not willing, that's ok, and I'll post at AN/I instead. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 16:27, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- I've finally asked another editor for help with how to copy/paste for DEFAULTSORT edits. Hopefully this end any further issues I may cause with spelling errors. I love to edit Wikipedia and would hate to lose my editing rights. Vincelord (talk) 17:38, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- Glad to hear it. I've also added an archive bot to this talk page to clean it up for you. You can revert the edit if you like, but some weird formatting issues were going on here and it looks like you've been unintentionally breaking things when deleting parts of messages to clean them up, so I figured it would be helpful. Cheers. -- asilvering (talk) 23:36, 24 April 2026 (UTC)

Message to self
editI use to think that I was a great Wikipedia editor but after being shown the hundreds of spelling mistakes I carelessly made I now know that paying closer attention to what I type is far more important that the number of edits I make in a day. If I ever made a DEFAULTSORT spelling error in a page you created please note that it was unintentional and all my edits are in good faith. And I will see to it that no more embarrassing mistakes are made in the future.Vincelord (talk) 20:09, 23 April 2026 (UTC)

Default sort
editThank you for adding the default sort to the article I've just written about Cole Lesley. I haven't yet grasped what the default sort is for and whether I should add it to the categories of any new article I write. An expert steer would be much appreciated. - DEFAULTSORT is so that the article will be listed in categories in alphabetical order based the subjects last name. It should be added to most article but not all. Asian names are listed alphabetical by first name. Vincelord (talk) 18:40, 1 May 2026 (UTC)

Sonyaa Ayoddhya moved to draftspace
editThanks for your contributions to Sonyaa Ayoddhya. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing as a live article at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability, it has too many problems of language or grammar, it is promotional and reads like an advertisement and it consists of machine-generated text. I have converted it to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.
Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit the draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. Flyingphoenixchips (talk) 23:10, 5 May 2026 (UTC)

- I promise if my block is lifted I will only make minor edits to pages like adding categories or link brackets. None of my edits in those were disruptive. I feel it is not fair to block me from all editing because of spelling errors with DEFAULTSORT. I will never make those kind of edits anymore. Vincelord (talk) 14:37, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

Note: Forum shopping at WP:AN, WP:Help desk, and 2 other administrators' talk pages after being told to stop, and disruptive editing at help desk. - An uninvolved admin will review your request. I stopped purely to stop the disruption Crossposting is not necessary and is counterproductive to your request Star Mississippi 01:10, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Tom.Reding: While I understand the concerns with forum-shopping, I also believe that it is an isolated incident that does not define Vincelord. I myself have engaged in forum-shopping by opening an RFC after a discussion had concluded with consensus against a change I proposed, but that incident does not define me. If not for that, a block would have been unthinkable in the first place, as the only issue was DEFAULTSORT errors, and his recent DEFAULTSORT edits do not have errors. I believe he is anxious over the prospect of being blocked, resulting and it is disruptive to block a contributor over an entire namespace over an issue that has been demonstrated to have been resolved without active sanctions. Therefore, I suggest an unblock without restrictions, as the issue that he has been blocked for is not outstanding, and the issue you have brought up is not necessarily block-worthy (concerning the warning templates on my talk page, they were for disruptive editing, not necessarily forum-shopping, and I was not blocked). Nononsense101 (talk) 18:20, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Nononsense101: you should read WP:AN/I#User:Vincelord. Vincelord's recent DEFAULTSORTs do have errors, and Vincelord's carelessness extends beyond DEFAULTSORT, as mentioned in the AN/I and as evidenced afterwards. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 19:32, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- The diff linked "space" in the ANI thread is not necessarily problematic, and he has not made an error in DEFAULTSORT for over a week. I do not see any outstanding problems. Nononsense101 (talk) 21:07, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Vincelord, I can see you used to create a lot of articles which look (on brief review) non-terrible. You say you're not going to work in DEFAULTSORT any more and I think taking a break in the circumstances from DEFAULTSORT would be wise and that article-creation could be an area to focus in.

- (Copying message over from ANI so you have a record of it here) - I've looked into this and from what I can see the issue appears to be high-speed, repetitive edits done by hand and possibly carelessly. Speaking as someone who makes a lot of careless typos, I can sympathise here.

- I'd, if I were you, also try harder to respond when other editors raise concerns on your talk page, communication is important on WP.
- Reducing P-block to time-served and the warning that having made the commitment to step away from DEFAULTSORT I really wouldn't return to it (or any other field of high-speed repetitive editing) without showing a good period of competent editing away from it. FOARP (talk) 14:52, 14 May 2026 (UTC)

- I can't thank you enough for your help in this issue. You are right that the direct cause of my typos was typing too fast and not really checking for errors.
