Guide to temporary accounts

Hello, Sammi Brie. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences Appearance Advanced options Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

WNWE has launched

According to RabbitEars (https://www.rabbitears.info/market.php?request=station_search&callsign=776263#station), WNWE seemed to have been launched, but I don't know if its own station, or as an ATSC station. OWaunTon (talk) 14:59, 31 October 2025 (UTC)

@OWaunTon I really don't know where this should go right now other than List of television stations in Wisconsin. The L2C was filed in early September per Jon Ellis. They've built it out as a very low-power facility. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 17:31, 31 October 2025 (UTC)

WHOI: Thank You!

Thank you very much, Sammi, for the incredible spade work you've done on the channel. I've turned it over in my mind for a few days, but I finally got a GeneaologyBank account and started looking through articles on the deintermixture side of the equation, starting with the genesis and the conclusion. What sealed the decision to get the account was the fact that there was only one vague blurb in Broadcasting on WIRL losing the channel 25 CP in 1963, leaving it open for WEEK-TV to snap up the channel months later; I have the results here and will update WEEK-TV's page shortly. Something will come of this digging soon; I will update you with more.[1][2][3][4] Gatorman (talk) 05:05, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

Gatorman (talk) 05:05, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

The Peoria paper was essential to doing 19, @Gatorman. Broadcasting has a wrong start date for WTVH/19 (October 12), which does not match with anything said in the Peoria papers. In fact, we had October 20 as the listed start date until I rewrote this article. WHOI was an interesting station. Doug Quick identified shortcomings in its early history, but they were not insurmountable. What was not was the IBEW strike in 1982–83, which Quick's summary fails to mention, and the 20-plus years of just increasingly meh owners that followed. Forward ran good stations; KCAU-TV was a market leader for all but the last few years of the company's ownership, for instance. (If you're wondering, KCAU and WRAU were almost certainly named as callbacks to WSAU in Wausau, the company's home office.) But the 80s saw many of them get lapped in various ways. The fact that Gray passed on this station in 2002 speaks volumes.
Are you on WP:DISCORD? We should really talk. As you can tell, there are many, many articles on broadcasting that need improvement. GenealogyBank users are extremely rare and can work on a number of markets that aren't in Newspapers.com or are missing key newspapers there, with highlights being Denver, New Orleans (Newspapers.com's Times-Picayune ends in 1977), Milwaukee... Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 05:24, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
Yes; I am joeygatorman there. Please hit me up sometime!
P.S. While on the subject of Forward's call signs, we also have WKAU—found in a brochure in the middle of Quick's page—but it was probably a sheer coincidence they were licensed to Kaukauna, Wisconsin, serving the Green Bay–Fox Cities region. Gatorman (talk) 05:32, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

Question

How are you, long time no see? Also, I wanted to ask if you would like to review Hunter Schafer's FAC nom or Fire (1996 film)'s GAN nom- I will review WYFF if you review either. HSLover/DWF (talk) 06:46, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

@DoctorWhoFan91 I'll be traveling through October 10, so I can't commit to reviews right now, but I do appreciate the thought and I do plan on doing reviews when I get back. Hope you're doing well. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 14:29, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
Thank you, sure, you can review either/both when you get back. I'm doing well. HSLover/DWF (talk) 07:59, 4 October 2025 (UTC)
Reminder- sorry for asking again/reminding but I don't want HS to get archived due to lack of reviews, so that's why I'm asking again. HSLover/DWF (talk) 17:11, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for your review of Fire, it was a great review. I'm not sure if your pings are on- so also came here to tell you I have made the changes or replied for the stuff you said. You can check if it's in a passing state now. HSLover/DWF (talk) 04:33, 11 November 2025 (UTC)

No need for sorry- I pinged here just to ensure that you know I have replied to the review, as I wasn't sure if your pings were on. Take your time, I don't have any issue with that. HSLover/DWF (talk) 15:36, 11 November 2025 (UTC)

I appreciate that; I was more concerned about the TJMaxx link-out more than anything else so I wanted to neutralize that and search later to make sure it was indeed the "TJMaxx Shopping Center" just because of how generic it was, or if it was still officially known as that by the mall's manager (when WP:RETAIL and WP:TV crossover in an article, it's like two interest areas that mix otherwise like oil and water 😐). Congratulations to this great achievement! - Today I remember a singer who impressed me on stage. - You are invited to the peer review after FAC, - in a poll, you could simply mark yes or no for the four open questions. It's an experiment. The piece has its 300th anniversary on Christmas Day, and should be as good as possible by then. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:59, 6 November 2025 (UTC)

I have three biographies on the main page today, miss a fourth one, nominated a fifth, that means little time for other matters. My places now include La Scala, - see music, Verdi three times, and twice in my story! - I have been persuaded to try GA reviewing, - do you have one open that would fit a newcomer? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:03, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

I need to nominate a batch, @Gerda Arendt, so I will do this. Go to User:Sammi Brie/Pipeline and pick out a page and I will nominate it. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 17:08, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
Good idea, I hope to get to it soon. - Look, today's image, - she "portrayed" herself with her husband at the end of the table, - would have been good for Thanksgiving ;) - I opened the FAC again, - feedback welcome. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:34, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
Thank you today for KEXP-FM, introduced last year: "Somewhere in a room in Seattle Center is a large map of the world, festooned with yellow pins. They tell the story of how a Seattle indie music station turned into a national, even international, audio institution. KEXP-FM (or KEXP, as you'll see it anywhere that isn't pedantic about call sign suffixes) started as KCMU-FM, the 10-watt campus radio station of the University of Washington, in 1972, but it was in the right place at the right time to become one of the standard-bearers for alternative music in a city that broke artists like Kurt Cobain and Soundgarden. After a turbulent early 1990s that included a listener boycott, the university's decision to split management from its public radio station and put it under the computing department, of all places, served as a critical technological catalyst for what it became later after partnering with the Experience Music Project in 2001: an independently owned and operated powerhouse with FM signals in Seattle and San Francisco, studios in Seattle that are a regular stop for touring acts and double as a community space, a massive streaming fanbase (of which I am now a part as a direct result of this project), and a prominent feature of the indie media landscape. While I have brought five television stations to FA, this is a massive moment for radio station coverage on the English Wikipedia, as there has not been a new FA in radio stations (some 25,000-plus titles in total) since WINC (AM) in 2014."! Wow!! - I was carried away by an image and devoted my first GA review to a different topic, but I'll get to yours, promised. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:41, 29 November 2025 (UTC)
Thank you so much, @Gerda Arendt. Getting KEXP to FA was a milestone for a project that had not an FA in such a long time and has come a long way in the years since its last one. It's definitely a different sort of station. I can happily say this is how I discovered KEXP and am now a regular listener. The reason I chose KEXP in the first place is because it was a fairly highly-viewed page in WikiProject Radio Stations (Wikipedia:WikiProject Radio Stations/Popular pages). And of course, my offer to choose any page from the pipeline still stands, though I did send up the next 20 pages to GAN. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 07:51, 29 November 2025 (UTC)

CAT:DUPARGS

You need to check your edits. A number of these Infoboxes already have |class= defined for the images so you are dumping thousands of pages into CAT:DUPARGS... Additionally, where are you getting the consensus to bulk add these to multiple templates? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:04, 1 December 2025 (UTC)

I was taking my cue from the recent addition to {{Infobox television}} and then realized "oops, this already defines a class" — I'd already asked for help on the issue. We've needed it sometimes for specific logos that get darkmode fixes (e.g. KEXP-FM). Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 18:05, 1 December 2025 (UTC)

Plip!

Hope you can accept this in good spirit... In deference to your edit count and experience, I am not going to template you, but your recent edits dumped a bunch of pages into a maintenance category.... Category:Pages using infobox university with unknown parameters (0). |alt= is not a defined param for {{Infobox university}}. The parameter you wanted was |image_alt=. Please remember to WP:PREVIEW your edits, particularly when you plan to perform the same edit multiple times so you don't introduce errors repeatedly... Thanks and enjoy the trout. @Zackmann08 Trouting accepted. The infoboxes I work with support either parameter name, and I think that'd be good practice for this one as well. (Looking at {{Infobox hospital}}, even it has "image alt" in its list of frightening spaced parameter names!) Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 00:54, 14 December 2025 (UTC)

New pages patrol January–February 2026 Backlog drive

January–February 2026 Backlog Drive | New pages patrol

New Pages Patrol is hosting a one-time, two-month experimental backlog drive aimed at reducing the backlog. This will be a combo drive: both articles and redirects will earn points.

  • The drive will run from 1 January to 28 February 2026.
  • The drive is divided into two phases. Participants may take part in either phase or across both phases, depending on availability.
  • Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled during the drive.
  • Two-month drive-exclusive barnstars will be awarded to eligible participants.
  • Each article review earns 1 point, while each redirect review earns 0.2 points.
  • Streak awards will be granted based on consistently meeting weekly point thresholds.
  • Barnstars will also be awarded for re-reviewing articles previously reviewed by other patrollers during the drive.
  • Interested in participating? Sign up here.

Welcome to the 2026 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2026 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here, and a bot will set up your submissions page within one day, ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2026 WikiCup, the highest-ranking contestants will receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. This is the same scoring system that we had last year. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants are no longer eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WABC

Hi -- I know you're expert on US radio and TV call signs, and I'm hoping you can help me figure out a link. I'm working on James Thurber; in 1934 he did some radio broadcasts on WABC in New York. Should that link to WABC (AM)? That article seems to imply it was called WJZ in 1934, so did "WABC" belong to another station at the time? No worries if you don't have time to look at this. Thanks (and Happy New Year). Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 13:30, 1 January 2026 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Radio stations disestablished in 2026

A tag has been placed on Category:Radio stations disestablished in 2026 indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

Radio Infobox Edits

Please be more careful when updating radio station inboxes. Each of the following edits in a twenty minute span has placed the articles in Category:Pages using infobox radio station with unknown parameters, containing parameter typos, incomplete wikification, or resulting in previously available info being hidden from the reader: , , , . I would recommended using the "Show preview" button before publishing changes as doing so will show if there are any radio station infobox errors at the top of the page. -JPG-GR (talk) 16:14, 18 January 2026 (UTC)

Help with updating more Canadian radio stations

I saw you were updating radio stations the past few days and recently did for some Canadians stations. I'm doing the same and I know some of the Bell Media stations need to be updated, from the templates, to more citations, to updated and structuring the pages better. Could you continue to do that and I'll try to pitch it? OWaunTon (talk) 17:47, 23 January 2026 (UTC)

@OWaunTon I've been focusing on infobox fixes:
  • Adding country field
  • Removing {{start date and age}} in favor of {{Start date}}
  • Fixing the parameter of convert on the Canadian stations to not use American spelling for "meters"
  • Removing bolded call sign acronyms
  • Occasional other fixes
