Order of Battle and strength at Bladensburg

edit

I have not seen supporting sources being cited, in relation to the edit you made, so I have undone it. If there are inline citations that are from WP:RS, then please do add these with the edit. Standalone edits without the supporting evidence are liable to be reverted. Keith H99 (talk) 19:37, 8 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

New Orleans

edit

Hello, I see that, in good faith, you uprated the result to include the word "decisive", and this has come up before. It's a good idea to see if a change has been proposed in the past, and debated on the talk page.

Talk:Battle of New Orleans/Archive 1

When this came up before, there had been WP:CON to leave it as a victory, rather than "decisive victory", so I am going to revert the edit. Keith H99 (talk) 14:58, 11 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Edits to Infoboxes for battles

edit

@LucyGermanDog I have noticed that your edits have been limited to battles, in particular those of the War of 1812.

As a consequence, the infoboxes are becoming bloated, and this runs counter to the purpose of the infobox.

Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#Purpose.

As a consequence, these edits have been reverted by myself and others.
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Battle_of_North_Point&oldid=1303737660

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Battle_of_Baltimore&oldid=1305074279

In essence we should not to try to write the article in the infobox. Given that the infobox is high level, it makes more sense that further detail as to the composition of the forces is stated within the main body of the article, and is properly sourced. Yes, there was a numerical superiority of the Americans at Bladensburg, but the quality of the troops left a lot to be desired. This warrants a further discussion, and it should be covered in the article as to how the troop numbers could mislead the reader, insofar as quality and quantity are two different attributes. The brevity of this cannot be conveyed by an infobox, and ought not be attempted.

Regarding Farnham Creek, there has been ambiguity as to the high level of participants. You have increased the numbers, but you have not provided an inline citation. In many cases, a visit to a public library will allow an editor to access information from history books that are reliable and verifiable sources.

Similarly, when the result of a battle is to be changed, that you see if this has been debated by editors in the past, or that you seek consensus that a change to a result should be made.

I would ask that you take some time to familiarize yourself with the guidance on wikipedia and its principles, so that further edits are in alignment with these principles. Keith H99 (talk) 10:48, 12 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@LucyGermanDog Can you please ensure that your subsequent edits are in keeping with the principles of wikipedia. I have reverted the edit to the infobox, in order to remove bloat. It's not letting me reply back to you on the siege of fort st Phillip discussion we were having.
But I'm not going to continue debating an engagement the British clearly lost. To put things simply, the British attacked, failed, and retreated. When an enemy forces lays siege to a fort and they end up retreating and the defenders end up holding, by all aspects of siege warfare it's a victory for the defenders. You can try to spin it however you'd like but at the end of the day the Americans were victorious at the siege of fort st Phillip. LucyGermanDog (talk) 14:06, 3 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Infobox bloat

edit

Regarding the Fort Bowyer infobox edit, this is too much detail. It belongs in the article, not in the infobox, as per my comment dated August 12.Keith H99 (talk) 16:03, 2 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

I will reply in a few days time to your other comment. I thought it worth mentioning that if the infobox becomes bloated, and where what has been added runs counter to the guidance, the edits will be reverted. I strongly recommend you re-read my comment dated August 12, not because "I" wrote it, more that there are some links to guidance, which I did not write and which I do not "own". Please do familiarize yourself with the guidance, and the overall philosophy of wikipedia.
You won't be the only person this has happened to. I recall that in the past I have added bloat in WP:GOODFAITH to the infobox for the Siege of Fort St Philip, and have had it removed. In the first instance I added flags. Given there were only two nations present at the skirmish, flags were not needed. In the second instance, I added chapter and verse as to the breakdown of Overton’s forces. This was removed, as this level of detail should be in main body of the article itself. In the third instance, I added two outcome takeaway bullet points to the result, of which I shall mention more in a few days.
In this regard, having been made aware that my well-intentioned edits were bloating the infobox, I keep an eye out for bloat issues, going forwards.Keith H99 (talk) 07:03, 5 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Introduction to contentious topics

edit

You have recently edited a page related to discussions about infoboxes, and edits adding, deleting, collapsing, or removing verifiable information from infoboxes, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Battle of Maguaga, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page First Nations. Infobox flags

edit

I note that you have been adding flags to belligerents and/or commanders in infoboxes where there are only two belligerents. In such a case, the two columns are sufficient to distinguish the two sides and the addition of flags is redundant (see MOS:MILFLAGS). I undid one such edit with an edit summary inpart: Per MOS:MILFLAGS - flags here are redundant. You reinstated your edit with the edit summary: Undo every battle where the flags are in the info box. This response falls to WP:HORSETRADING and is an inappropriate reason for the reinstatement. You are editing against P&G and the broader community consensus it represents. I would suggest you self-revert where such additions remain at this time. Cinderella157 (talk) 01:02, 30 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

You continue to add/reinstate flags contrary to the guidance . Also edit summary is not an appropriate place to make an allegation. Cinderella157 (talk) 10:40, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your contributions to Siege of Fort Madison. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing as a live article at this time because the aftermath section will make limited sense until the background section is written. I have converted it to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit the draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. Northernhenge (talk) 20:12, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
