DYK nomination feedback

edit

Thanks for looking into my nomination! Have to ask though, anything else other than referencing the geology section of the article that would help? I've thought to add volcanology as a section to add more content if it's apt. If you would really be considering nominating it for a good article then I oughta do some real concise work on it, yeah?

Also on the user mentioning part, doesn't it say to mention the article creator? Sorry if the rules were right up my nose, first time nominating something heh. (Also sorry if this isn't the right place, again I'm not sure where to discuss this properly)

PeepeeDino (talk) 14:30, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@PeepeeDino: Usual practice is to comment at the nom. I'd also recommend knocking some of the short sentences in Designation as National Monument together.--Launchballer 14:35, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Righty then! I'll revise em as soon as I can. Out the top of my head though, I could also nominate the article myself, correct? Don't want to burden you further. But again I'm not too in-depth with how all these nominations work :/

Celebrity Traitors DYK

edit

Hi Launchballer, I've just nominated The Celebrity Traitors series 2 for DYK – I'm trying to think of another, more interesting hook and thought it was in your wheelhouse. Please may you add another hook if you come up with one. No worries if not. Max263 (talkcontribs) 19:32, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I actually thought about drivebying that with something like "that one newspaper reported that the lineup for The Celebrity Traitors "sparked outrage" in the United States", but decided the Metro wasn't quite strong enough. I'll have another look through sources later, but @DaniloDaysOfOurLives: may wish to comment on my hook in the interim.--Launchballer 20:08, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh that's not funny; "sparked outrage" is in the Google summary but not the source. Since when have they not been quotes from the article? My suggestion remains along the lines of increased star power.--Launchballer 23:44, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Benee page development

edit

Hey @Launchballer! Thanks for all your help with the Daz Black page, looks amazing! Was thinking, I've been working on the Benee page every now and again over the years and I think with a little cleanup we could get it to GA and maybe even (later down the line) a FA because of the sheer amount of high quality sources & large amount of news articles about her career etc. Obviously we would need the approval of the main author of the page (@Cybertrip) to nominate if we go ahead & I'm the 2nd top author so that's all good there too! (Obviously Cybertrip you can help us as well if you'd like to of course!)

Let me know if this would be of interest to either / both of you, have always wanted to see if I can get a page to FA :) George (talk) 03:21, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Great idea. Go for it :) @Georgeykiwi @Launchballer cybertrip👽 ( 💬📝) 06:18, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I can certainly look at getting that to GA. I haven't attempted an FA since Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Piri/archive1 in 2023, and I'll admit that Wikipedia:Peer review/Bonnie Blue (actress)/archive1 earlier this year rather scared me. Let me get it to GA first and work from there. (As an aside, I just discovered that Apple Pie's been a thing since at least September 2024, except I can't find it on either SoundCloud, Spotify, or YouTube and searching Piri's tweets for the phrase brings up nothing - where did she publish it?)--Launchballer 09:01, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's so weird? Maybe it was just a teaser on TikTok or something and someone added it to genius? not sure. Also yeah that's totally fair we can go from there haha. Would I be alright to do the nominating this time round as well? George (talk) 01:13, 16 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Tele7

edit

Hi,Thomas. I am posting here to let you know that I saw the review and agree with it (was going to rephrase the hook a bit), but that the DYK template is misteriously protected, and so I can't answer there. Will get back to this once I'll be able to. Dahn (talk) 04:27, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

For some reason, it will still not let me edit the nom page. Erm, help. Dahn (talk) 17:01, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Not seeing anything in your block log and I was able to edit it fine. What error message are you getting?--Launchballer 05:43, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
It was just not loading the page, that one page, and refreshing it came with a message that it was semi-protected. Dahn (talk) 17:19, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Please allow me to note that you suggested a quote must be attributed in the hook, yet you approved a version which has no clear attribution ("was called" is very much like my original wording). I don't take umbrage either way, but I happened to notice this on the main page: ... that "no one told the eels to stop acting like eels" beneath the streets of Wellington?. Notice how a completely unattributed opinion appears as the hook's verifiable fact (no "was called", no "according to critics", no "some have claimed").

Please opt for one of two approaches on this: either we ask for attribution or we don't. The current situation, where just some attributions are required, in this hook but not that other one, doesn't work for anyone. Dahn (talk) 07:40, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Technical issues re: Daylit Gallery article

edit

Hi Launchballer, Do you mind discussing technical issues regarding sourcing for Daylit Gallery here on your Talk page (or on my Talk page)? I have some quite specific ideas about this and thought it might be a bit too nit-picky for a general discussion on the DYK nom template page. Also, thanks for your advice on the ALT2 hook. Much better. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 05:32, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Cl3phact0: I would prefer to discuss that at the nom given that it deserves {{independent sources}}, which is a DYK showstopper.--Launchballer 14:13, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Noted. I thought we might be able to spare our DYK colleagues a potentially tengential time-suck. In the meantime, have a look at Non-departmental public body and I know it when I see it, both of which might be helpful. The Victoria and Albert Museum isn't some dubious porno site or click-bait smut (it's a NDPB); its not a {{self-published source}}; nor is it a {{user-generated source}}; nor even a {{primary source}}in all fairness, and with nothing but the deepest respect for you and your work here, I'm struggling to understand your concern. Have you had time to look the sources themselves? I think you may be wrong on this one, but I am of course happy to discuss it in the DYK nom if that's what you prefer. Whatever works best for you is fine by me. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 20:46, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey man

edit

I am here about the Enzo Richer DYK Nomination, do I need to resub or what? Because the page is protected, I decided to come here instead of having to do a edit request. I checked and I assume you want me to redo the hook? Am I right? F1fan00 (talk) 14:04, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@F1fan00: I will return to the nom later, but given the issues @Dahn: described at #DYK for Tele7 and that there's nothing in your block log or that template's protection log, what do you mean by protected?--Launchballer 14:09, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I should note that I got the same protection message, today as well, on my Tele7 nom, and only managed to bypass it by clicking on one of the various links to the nom page (couldn't remember which, can't know if it will work again). Dahn (talk) 14:36, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
When I click the pen icon on the nom, I (still) get: "The editor will now load. If you still see this message after a few seconds, please refresh the page." Refreshing the page then tells me that the page is protected. Dahn (talk) 14:38, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
it says it is a protected page, which baffles me a fair bit. I don't know if that is just happened or maybe the time I have been here (although I have been on Wikipedia for over a year), so yeh F1fan00 (talk) 15:03, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
No idea. @RoySmith:?--Launchballer 15:07, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't look like it's protected, nor has it been in the past. @F1fan00 could you copy-paste the exact error message you got, and what URL you were on when you got it? RoySmith (talk) 15:11, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
will do F1fan00 (talk) 17:42, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@RoySmith@Launchballer turns out i am now able to edit it, baffling how it shown up as protected before but not now, odd F1fan00 (talk) 17:44, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Provost has now been removed, so it mentions only Richer, tell me if I need to make any edits to the article and if so, what? F1fan00 (talk) 17:49, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Well, glad things are working for you now. My best guess is that when you got the blocked message, you may have been connected via an IP address which had been blocked. If it happens again, copy the exact error message you're getting somewhere and ping me. Don't post the error message publicly if it includes an IP address (or if you do, leave out the actual address). RoySmith (talk) 00:45, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Update: I pasted the message I got just above. I still get it, whenever I try editing the nom template on either T:TDYK or the corresponding section on the article talk page. I can bypass it (only) by editing the entire talk page of the article. Dahn (talk) 10:57, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Weird. Can you copy-paste the exact URL you were on when you got that? RoySmith (talk) 11:00, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
This one. Dahn (talk) 11:03, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
You're on https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:DYKsubpage&action=edit&section=T-1 Is that correct? What did you click to get there? Is this in a browser on a desktop, or a mobile device? RoySmith (talk) 11:10, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Are you getting "This page is currently protected so that only template editors and administrators can edit it"? RoySmith (talk) 11:28, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Mobile device.
Yes, that is the message I get. But the first message tells me to refresh the page (as the only option) -- I refresh it, and it claims to be protected. Dahn (talk) 11:48, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
OK, we're getting closer. If I go to that URL on my phone, I can reproduce the error you're getting, but I can't figure out how you got there. What did you click on that brought you to that URL? RoySmith (talk) 11:56, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Voican Voiculescu

edit

Hi. While I am fine with your review of Gelu Voican Voiculescu, I wish I had been pinged about the shorter hook. I think it can safely be argued that mentioning Voican's status as both a Ceaușescu gravedigger and an esotericist would actually be interesting and puzzling to most readers (the aristocrat bit is probably more niche). The hook in that form told the reader that the man who buried Ceaușescu was also officiating mysteries. That juxtaposition is weird by any account. I'm also not sure that removing the link on Ceaușescu was the best editorial choice. Either way, I wish there had been at least a tiny discussion, with a way to state my points -- I am.not hung up on them, but perhaps they would have persuaded you as well. Would you consider adding one word: ... that esotericist Gelu Voican Voiculescu took pride in securing a death sentence for Romania's last communist leader? Dahn (talk) 05:54, 1 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Dahn: Apologies for not pinging you. Esoteric is quite an obscure word, but feel free to ask at WT:DYK.--Launchballer 10:38, 1 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Potential DYK nomination

edit

In regards to this, I was already planning to go for DYK myself with Ktkvtsh as a co-nom. If the article does pass its review at GAN and one of us hasn't already started that up, then please include us both as co-noms instead of trying to swipe up a DYK just for yourself. It would come off as arbitrary at best to go for a solo nomination that leaves out GA nominators when you don't seem to have even worked on the page for James Jr. very much. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 02:58, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'd planned on crediting you both as "Improved to Good Article status by", which as far as I'm aware would make you co-nominators (see Template:Did you know nominations/Clop (erotic fan art) (2nd nomination) for another driveby which I also haven't edited and where the authors are bylined higher than me). The DYKnom template is really for whoever turns in a QPQ for it; there's no functional difference between it and DYKmake.--Launchballer 10:59, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
What is the DYK phrasing you were planning to propose? I'd like it if SNUGGUMS and I could have input on what fact is shared for this. Ktkvtsh (talk) 21:17, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Probably something along the lines of "that historians and scholars rank the eponymous son of James Buchanan Sr. as among the worst presidents in American history", although the nomination would be open to ALTs.--Launchballer 21:35, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Why would you name Buchanan Sr and not Buchanan? Also, why so negative?
There are so many more interesting things to say. This is why the DYK nomination should be made by people who have actually worked on the page. Ktkvtsh (talk) 22:29, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@SNUGGUMS,
These are the one's I was preparing to nominate.
... that James Buchanan was offered a herd of elephants by King Rama IV of Siam, but the letter arrived after Buchanan left office?
... that James Buchanan helped open talks over buying Alaska by spreading a rumor that Mormons planned to emigrate to Russian Alaska?
... that James Buchanan received one of the first official messages sent through the transatlantic telegraph cable, a message from Queen Victoria that took 16 hours to transmit?
@Launchballer,
Could you please not nominate a DYK for this article and allow SNUGGUMS and I to do it? I am humbly asking this of you. I'd like the DYK that ends up on the front page to be something we choose after our hard work and research. Ktkvtsh (talk) 22:34, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
To be honest, I agree with Ktkvtsh; it's better to let those with more contributions to an article handle nominations and there's no good reason to WP:EASTEREGG the man's name within a hook. As for the other hooks proposed, my personal preference among them is the Alaska one. Another possibility I thought about was how he had been a contender for at least three Presidential elections (1844, 1848, and 1852) prior to his 1856 victory. With the benefit of a night's sleep, I'm going to leave you two to it. I don't think any of your concerns are valid though:

"eponymous son of James Buchanan Sr" means "son of James Buchanan Sr who is also called James Buchanan" and WP:EASTEREGG applies in cases that look like something else (readers will not think it links to "the eponymous son").
It's my opinion, as the writer of 22 of the last 100 hooks to make the top five at Wikipedia:Did you know/Statistics/Monthly DYK pageview leaders, that "Buchanan was one of the worst presidents" is by far the most interesting thing we can say about him; all of the above proposed hooks fail WP:DYKTRIM at least, and I wouldn't promote any of them per WP:DYKINT. None of the rules we have about negative hooks apply to my hook.

I strongly recommend making this a double with James Buchanan Sr. rather than making your own nom, if for no other reason than backlog mode demands an extra QPQ per nomination, not per article.--Launchballer 10:25, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for leaving it to us. I’ve noted your opinions and will keep it in mind. Ktkvtsh (talk) 14:02, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
