Nutrition information
Just so you know, you should consider other sources for understanding nutrition. Zefr is very set against antioxidant marketing, and very scientific in their mindset. This results in omission of certain information. Apples are a source of antioxidants, it is just that beyond vitamins A,C,E, those other compounds are not well-understood in their mechanism of action on human health. I encourage you to do your own research, to see that apples have been much maligned as being less nutritious than other fruits, when bestowing such a rating is a nigh impossibility with any degree of accuracy, owing to current methods relying on specific quantification of known and understood nutrients. - The reason i added those statements to the "An apple a day" article is that the lede currently neglects to clarify why either (a) apples were chosen culturally and historically when their nutritional value is substandard, or (b) their nutritional value is not actually substandard. - Apples have great variety of taste and color, and are enjoyable to eat. Nothing more about culture, history, or nutrition needs to be considered, as would have been judged by apple consumers over centuries.
- PuppyMonkey said "Wikipedia is not a good source for the latest nutrition information" and "The user you encountered is very set against antioxidant "marketing"... and "this results in omission of potentially beneficial information."
- Given PuppyMonkey's self-assurance (yet with absence of any WP:SCIRS sources to support it), would PuppyMonkey be willing to engage with me and other editors in an administrators discussion to consider what are good sources for foods and nutrition? As used now for Wikipedia food and nutrition articles, we adhere to the USDA nutrition database and/or WP:MEDRS sources. These reputable, rigorous resources seem to be outside the scope of references preferred by PuppyMonkey.
- Although the Cleveland Clinic is highly regarded for its hospital and medical services, its web publications on nutrition and foods are often atrocious, as is the case for the example given by Jarble. The subtitle of the Cleveland Clinic article is "An apple a day may reduce high blood pressure, lower cholesterol and help you live longer" - a completely false and ludicrous statement, revealing total ignorance of scientific or medical evidence standards throughout the 'Health benefits' section of that article - none of those seven benefits is fact-based; the article is woo and public disinformation.
- WebMD doesn't have rigor in its authorship or review of medical, food and nutrition content, as a typical article is written by a student and reviewed by one MD (example above). This is an insufficient practice for science or Wikipedia, and WebMD should be avoided as a reference unless confirmed by a MEDRS source.
- It's important that we get this right with the input of other editors and admins, as PuppyMonkey is a prolific editor on food articles, and has an unscientific view on how nutrition is discussed and sourced that is shocking. - @Zefr There is no need to pursue further discussion on this. I took the notice about "deliberate" "misinformation" on my talk page, and although in disagreement with the premise, reflected on your investment in Wikipedia and Wikipedia policies, and decided to stay out of nutrition advice on Wikipedia. Harboring my own opinion, @Jarble wondered about the sourcing of "antioxidants in apples" which seems to be the topic of current conversation. This user is the one questioning the re-instatement of information. With the sources they brought up, I simply wanted to point them to the fact that calling apples "nutritious" is a qualitative assertion and not the purview of Wikipedia which presents numerical quantification of nutrients. However bothersome it is to me to not further qualify (with modern nutrition) the proverb and health advice on eating well, I left well enough alone, knowing about the risk of being accused of deliberate misinformation. If you create a daughter acticle, remember to link it via relevant sections using the template:main; see WP:SUMMARY. Also, rather than duplicating data table, it is more efficient to use templates or excepts so that the data only needs to be maintained in one place.
