Newspaper account

edit

Hello,

I requested the newspaper account access for my research, but find I do not actually use it. I would like to return the subscription so some other editor can use it.Georgejdorner (talk) 00:39, 29 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

HI @Georgejdorner: Thanks for offering to return your account. We've been given more free accounts and there's not a waitlist, so it's not necessary to remove your access immediately. Your subscription will expire anyway on March 19 2016. All the best, HazelAB (talk) 13:50, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Newspapers.com

edit

Hello HazelAB. I applied for the Newspapers.com subscription on Saturday and was accepted sometime on Sunday. I then created an account and filled out the Google form, but I still do not have free access to all the newspapers. Thanks,--12george1 (talk) 19:35, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi @12george1: The Newspapers.com subscription is a two-stage process. Now that you've signed up and filled out the form I will let Newspapers.com know and they will activate your account. That should happen in the next couple of days. All the best, HazelAB (talk) 13:48, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Question about quote from newspapers.com

edit

Hello. I have added a fairly long (3 lines) quote from an article I found on newspapers.com for J. Washington Moore. Should I trim it a bit more? I feel like all of it is significant though, and those who don't have access to newspapers.com will want to read what the article said, given that it is a contentious issue. Usually I don't add quote at all, but in this case I feel like it is necessary. What do you think? (Please ping me when you respond as I may not see your page on my watchlist.) Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 19:26, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Zigzig20s:, Wow, it's great to see how much Newspapers.com has to offer about J. Washington Moore! I don't see a problem with the length of the quotation, but I think it would be even better if you clipped the article, using the resource's Clipping function, and made a link to it. That way people who don't have subscriptions could see the whole newspaper article. The clipping would look like this: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/3987552/ Information about how to use the clipping functionality is at the Wikipedia Library Newspapers.com site here: Wikipedia: Newspapers.com#Citation and Open Access and at the Newspapers.com site here. All the best, HazelAB (talk) 23:10, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Will my newspapers.com username show on the clipping? It looks like it might. If so, I'd rather someone else added the clippings.Zigzig20s (talk) 00:11, 8 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I believe the three articles with quotes could be clipped, if you want to do it. But otherwise the direct quote might be sufficient. I usually never use direct quotes, but the three topics are potentially contentious (female suffrage, stolen election ballots of black candidates, arrest of drug dealer).Zigzig20s (talk) 00:14, 8 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

A note of thanks …

… for your very efficient handling of the newspapers.com subscriptions and renewals. Many, many thanks! Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:41, 15 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Newspapers.com sign-up

edit

Hi HazelAB, thank you very much for the approval. A few days before I applied to you, another editor suggested that I sign up for a free membership at Newspapers.com, so I did. However, I was unable to access anything without paying more money and that's when the other editor informed me that I should have signed up on your list. I mention all this because after receiving your approval email, I clicked on the special partnership registration link that helps you track who subscribes via your partnership, and it said that I was already a free member. I hope this doesn't mess up your records. I went ahead and did step 2, filling out the Google form. Best, Yoninah (talk) 13:52, 8 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Newspapers.com renewals—Never got an account in the first place!

edit

I got an email from you on newpapers.com account renewals, but I was not aware that I actually had a newspapers.com account via Wikipedia. I applied for one, but never received any login information or password or instruction on how to get such. I had assumed something had gone wrong, or that you were over the limit on accounts. Having that account would have made several articles I was working on much easier. If possible, can you check and see if I really do have a newspapers.com account, and let me know what my user login and password are, or how to get them? Thank you. Newspapers.com

edit

Hi HazelAB,

I completed the required forms for full access to Newspapers.com back in March and still haven't received full access. Can you please help? Many thanks! X4n6 (talk) 23:49, 15 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@X4n6: You should have full access as of March 30. It may be relevant that since January Newspapers.com has added "Publisher Extra" content that is not included in our Wikipedia subscriptions. It appears in search result lists with a little plus sign next to the newspaper title. Then when you click on the result you get a message inviting you to upgrade your subscription in order to view the Publisher Extra content. Or can you not get access to anything at all on the site? HazelAB (talk) 16:15, 18 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Many thanks for getting back to me. That's exactly it: virtually everything that came up in my searches had the plus(+) sign on them, re-directing me to the "Upgrade to a Publisher Extra Subscription to view this page" notice. So short of doing that, I suppose Newspapers.com has severely limited their utility re: us then? Oh well, still grateful for the resource - and your help. Many thanks again! Kent Island (New Brunswick)

edit

Hello HazelAB, I came across the Kent Island article while doing routine spelling edits and noticed a number of "format errors" introduced by a new editor that need to be addressed. Normally, I would simply revert the current iteration back to a clean version dated May 23, 2024, but I see that you made a few edits today. Since you have edited the article several times over the years, would you be inclined to clean up the present version and eliminate the errors, or would you be okay with a revert? Regards. Woodlot (talk) 19:44, 15 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for getting in touch,User:Woodlot. I think it's worth cleaning up the present version as there's probably some new content worth keeping. I'll work on that tomorrow. I've been meaning to do some work on this article and this will be my excuse. HazelAB (talk) 22:19, 15 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Please be careful with edits like this, because in fact Lorimer is the ONLY source for John Kent and his sons having saved 150+ lives as lightstation/lighthouse keepers, so it is necessary. Fundy Isles Historian - J (talk) 16:30, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Ah wait, I think I see in an earlier edit you just split the run-on sentence into two and you moved Lorimer to cover the first facts about Kent/son, and then took it off the widow - whereas I just piled the references at the end of the sentence. Thanks. Difficulty finding out much about the island's actual infrastructure as a Bowdoin station, there's Bowdoin articles about the birds seen, etc - but not much on the actual mechanics of the station unfortunately. Fundy Isles Historian - J (talk) 16:32, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

HazelAB, thanks for taking the time to clean up the article. It's in much better shape now. Woodlot (talk) 21:11, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

If you don't mind, I'd love help with Robert Pagan; it had zero references and was a giant textblock - but where you showed interest in Moses Gerrish, I thought you might also be tangentially interested as I am in the half-dozen major characters in the forming of the area. I'm also debating whether to make Thomas Farrell his own article to remove some details from Deer Island (New Brunswick) Fundy Isles Historian - J (talk) 01:43, 9 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm also having difficulty figuring out how to link a bunch of the islands (I'm thinking of deleting Nub and possibly a couple others that lack much independent information beyond their larger sister-island) to their other-language articles such as Salkeld Islands which exists on ceb. but when I click "Add Languages" it just blanks out. As https://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_County_(kondado_sa_Kanada) shows, most of these islands are also on ceb. and elsewhere Fundy Isles Historian - J (talk) 02:32, 11 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I have no idea how to do this, User: Fundy Isles Historian - J. You could ask at Wikipedia:Teahouse. (There seems to be a surprising amount of interest in Charlotte County on the Cebuano WP). HazelAB (talk) 12:12, 11 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Cheney Island

edit

You removed the cited reference to NB Tourism, then claimed there was no reference for it and removed the information. I am greatly confused. Fundy Isles Historian - J (talk) 16:46, 24 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello User: Fundy Isles Historian - J, the sentence I removed read: "New Brunswick Tourism claims his ghost haunts the island". The reference cited was http://www.grandmanannb.com/otherIslands.html which is not New Brunswick Tourism but Grand Manan Tourism. (I see you have corrected that when you added back the statement about a "claim".) However, the GM site contains no such claim, but says: "It is said to be haunted by the ghost of the original settler, known as “Old Man Cheney”. This is not a claim by GM Tourism about the actual existence of a ghost, but a statement that "it is said" (by whom?) that the ghost haunts the island. When I edited the article I added a reference to "ghost stories" backed up by the CBC article, which I cited. I hope this clarifies the reason for my edit. File permission problem with File:Photograph of Wayne Clifford, Canadian poet.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Photograph of Wayne Clifford, Canadian poet.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. Here is a list of your uploads. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Hey, with the pretty-much completed {{CharlotteNBIslands}} (I'm going to look into the last few red links but I'm thinking they're all too small/un-notable to merit articles) I'm open to any southern NB specific suggestions of articles on which to focus myself; I'm not really looking to write biographies on Gerrish and Pagan or the local MP/MLAs down here (okay I made an exception for James Lord because apparently he was a member of the KKK which is interesting lol) - and I'm not going to have the energy to just go do up random mainland McAdam, St David Parish, Pocologan articles (I have a fondness for islands lol) - but if there's anything you think I'd enjoy turning my eye toward trying to improve or hunt down a specific ancestor or flesh out some little known details (Chesapeake Affair I found a lot of details on the NBers who swore allegiance to the South in the Civil War lol), let me know - I'd appreciate some guidance! Hi, would appreciate if you'd have a look/watchlist at Robert Pagan, Jeremiah Pote and Thomas Wyer if you haven't already - and importantly, I was wondering how you'd interpret "St. Andrews Island" in https://carensecord.ca/locations/NewBrunswick/Glimpses/CXIII.html where it says the lonely freemason spent a year alone (like totally?) with his gun and dog on the island before settling in St Andrews lol Fundy Isles Historian - J (talk) 17:53, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Fundy Isles Historian - J, I have no idea what is meant by St. Andrews Island in that article. (I noticed that this Matthew Thornton is mentioned in the Death and Legacy section of the WP article about his uncle Matthew Thornton.) I agree with whoever tagged Jeremiah Pote that there's no evidence of notability in the article.HazelAB (talk) 18:56, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Fundy Isles demographics

edit

Loved the Grand Manan voting summary, tight and succinct - wanted to do the same for Campobello and Deer - put the data at User:New Yathrib - Fundy Historian/poll but can't figure out how to fix colours - you able to help? New Yathrib - Fundy Historian (talk) 04:33, 23 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, sorry, I have no idea. HazelAB (talk) 12:13, 23 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Destubathon of the Americas

edit

You are invited to participate in the Destubathon of the Americas, a contest/editathon which will run from May 1 to May 31. The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible. A good chance to have fun in expanding many of our old stale stubs and win up to £2000 ($2680) in Amazon vouchers for expanding stub articles. Sign up in the Contestants/participants section on the contest page if interested. Even if not interested in prizes you are still warmly welcome to participate in it as an editathon! Hopefully we can achieve something significant in the month of May together! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:02, 15 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
