Arrest of Daniele Perazzi

Hi HJ,

What was the problem with the added section about the arrest of Daniele Perazzi? I included a verifiable source, the POV was quite neutral, it was not "original research" in any way shape or form, and it is newsworthy and accurate.

FWIW, I'm not merely sympathetic to Perazzi, I'm outraged at the Denver police's actions. Fine, the cab driver was a retard, but the fascist pigs should have figured out that it was stupid to arrest the executive of an Italian shotgun manufacturer bringing half a million dollars in custom shotguns to a gun show.

60.248.2.163 (talk) 04:08, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Oh, I agree it was moronic; if you're going to allow people to buy guns from the supermarket, it's strange to arrest someone for taking a load of them to gun show. But we received a complaint at OTRS that the content was inaccurate and not really relevant to the company's article, and I tend to agree that the text as it was (assuming it was accurate) gave the incident undue weight. Great job so far

Great job so far on List of sieges of Gibraltar.

I made more comments at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of sieges of Gibraltar/archive1.

Hello - Academic Dress Editathon

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages

Hi HJ Mitchell. :) I restored Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, as it is definitely notable. For example, it has its own entry in The Routledge Encyclopedia of Language Teaching and Learning. You can send it to AfD if you want, but it will almost certainly be kept, in my opinion. Oxford Meetup 5

Hi, I'm concerned about the low level of support for the fifth Oxford Meetup. Are you unable to attend, or is it that you haven't seen the geonotice? --Redrose64 (talk) 12:21, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm afraid my finances are rather strained at the minute. The £10 to New Street to meet Doug wouldn't be too much of a problem, but the £35 to get all the way to Oxford is more than I have to spend on getting to a meetup, much as I like the company in Oxford. Image for Shreveport

Greetings HJ, I noticed you recently deleted an image regarding Shreveport that was used on quite a number of things including a template and the Shreport project. I would recommend in the future if an image is deleted that is high use, it might be beneficial to leave a note on the appropriate projects page. Not that you need to do that in every case, but it seems useful in the cases where its used heavily by a project. Happy editing. Kumioko (talk) 14:38, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

I see where you're coming from, but it was one of a batch of images I deleted last night (some here, some on Commons) after a complaint to OTRS led me to them. I suppose a courtesy notification might not hurt, but the popularity of an image won't save it from deletion if it was uploaded in violation of somebody else's copyright. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:49, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
Yep no worries. I fixed it in Template:WikiProject United States but lord knows when it will be implemented. There's a huge stack of changes pending implementation for that template and its growing by the day. I have several more to do still. I left the edit request template on there for a week and after no one did anything I just removed it since it apparently isn't important. Eventually if the changes become important enough then maybe someone with admin rights will implement them since I'm not allowed too. Kumioko (talk) 16:37, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Disruptive edits on Terry McAuliffe

Instaurare is making disruptive non-neutral edits on Terry McAuliffe, such as calling him a "tireless money man".

I, LitmusCycle, and Safehaven86 have made it clear that his edits are non-neutral and does not belong on the article, but he does not seem too care.

Instaurare also make edits to Ken Cuccinelli who is the direct opponent to Terry McAuliffe in the coming election, which I believe is a conflict of interest. Illegal Operation (talk) 00:39, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Rollback?

Hello, HJ Mitchell. I chose your name randomly from the list of administrators willing to grant rollback, and I'd like to request the tool. I've been patrolling the recent changes page for a while and have been using Twinkle to rollback edits. When I was first using TW on recent changes, I made some errors, but learned from them quickly. At this point, I think I'm using TW correctly and fairly, and would like to venture into the world of being a "Rollbacker". I'd certainly appreciate it if you would see fit to allow me the privilege. Thank you. -- Winkelvi 00:14, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Oxford Meetup 6

I'm sorry that you were unable to attend the fifth Oxford Meetup. I intended to send this message on Monday, but I've been a bit busy, sorry.

Several of us would like to continue with the monthly plan, since trying to make a two-monthly cycle fit into the University terms doesn't work very well. It does occur to me that "first Sunday" is 7 July, which would clash with Coventry 8. Perhaps one of them could be second Sunday (14 July) which probably clashes with London 71, for which no date has yet been set, but there were reports at Oxford - I think from WereSpielChequers (talk · contribs) - that the London attendances are down. A page has been created about the sixth Oxford Meetup; please sign up if you think that you are able to attend - if the date or venue are unsuitable, please comment at its discussion page.

Please spread the word to anybody else who you think might be interested. The next UK meetups are at: London, 16 June; Manchester, 22 June; and Coventry, 7 July. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:38, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

I deliberately scheduled Coventry for the nearest date in the future that didn't clash with anything; if both are on the same day, I won't be able to make Oxford, but I think it would be unfortunate for two meetups so close to clash. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:26, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

a section was deleted, which is Vandalism and offending NPOV

I will appreciate your advice, concerning what can be done if Wikipedia rules are offended. The section British_diplomacy_in_support_of_the_Arabs was deleted by user:pluto2012. In my opinion , this deletion is offending these 2 rules:

I have complained at Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view/Noticeboard but no one is taking care. The offender does find errors in the removed section, but claims for a lack of other views. In my opinion there is no other view, but even if it would exist, it should be added to the section rather than deleting it.

What can be done in order to enforce the Wikipedia rule? Ykantor (talk) 11:41, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

Hello sir, I'm looking for someone to look over and do a quick pass on this bio. English is not my first language so I'm having problems with writing good/great prose. Would be much appreciated

Thanks for the reply HJ Mitchell! I would love to see the article reach GA or even FA sometime in the future, but I don't see myself as a good enough editor for that. While I have the knowledge, English is not my first language and I'm struggling to write longer coherent sentences. I'm sort of waiting for a more experienced editor to take over the command. Anyways, the first step would be to have someone go over the prose and fix whatever they think need to be fixed. Any help or contribution is greatly appreciated.

Oxford Meetup 6

Hi HJ; further to User talk:HJ Mitchell/Archive 75#Oxford Meetup 6, a date for London 71 still hasn't been set, so I propose to shift Oxford to 14 July 2013, the second Sunday in July, thus avoiding a collision with Coventry. Hopefully, this means that RexxS (talk · contribs) and yourself will be able to make it. Do you have an opinion? --Redrose64 (talk) 16:25, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, since Coventry 8 have a prior claim to the date, and given that nobody has (yet) claimed 14 July for any UK meetups, I have decided that Oxford 6 should be held on 14 July 2013, and not 7 July as previously advertised. In this way, those who wish to attend both may do so. I hope the revised Oxford date is convenient for you. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:40, 15 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi Redrose, thanks for re-scheduling. I don't think there are many people who would struggle to decide between Oxford and London, but I think meetups in two relatively close provincial cities would have been unfortunate. I can't speak for Doug—he might be off enjoying his new-found freedom—but I'll be there if I can. Btw, you really should come up to a Coventry meetup one of these days. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:02, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
I've had one apology for absence already. I'll try to come to Coventry some time; I have a friend who lives in Allesley Park, who is an active CAMRA member. Trains from Didcot are funny: I always need to change at Oxford, where there is one train per hour to Coventry. On weekdays it's a 25-minute wait at Oxford; on Sundays it's supposedly 7 minutes, but the train that gives that 7-minute wait doesn't always run, so it could mean waiting 20 mins at Didcot for one that does run, then 50 mins at Oxford. I gotta be sure... --Redrose64 (talk) 18:46, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
Well, I said I didn't think there were *many*; WSC is evidently one of the few. Don't they have buses—they're a bit like single-carriage trains with rubber on the wheels ;)—from Didcot to Oxford? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:02, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
Indeed, yes, with 17 mins to get from Castle Street to the station, it can be done; last bus home is 18:30 so last train from Coventry is 17:25. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:22, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, HJ! My name is EnglishEfternamn, or EE, for short. I am writing because I have been on Wikipedia since 2006. I however, left WP in 2007 and have recently returned. I know I am trying to move things along very quickly, but I aspire to be within the scope of adminship inside of the next month or so. Would you be willing, as an experienced user, to guide me into that process? Keep in mind I'm not asking you to nominate me now (or ever), I'm simply asking for guidance on how I can move in the right direction. Cheers!EnglishEfternamn*t/c* 05:50, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) If I can provide a few tips as well:
  1. your edit count is far below the typical 5,000 minimum (you have 1833)
  2. you will need at least 8-12 months in a row of consistent 200+ edits per month - any long breaks are huge negatives (especially 6 years)
  3. you need to have a better ratio of article edits to talkpage edits (only 1/3 of your edits have been to articles)
  4. if you're actually asking someone about becoming an admin, then you're going about it the wrong way ... when at least a half-dozen respected editors ask you, then it might be time
You have a lot of work over the next year to become even remotely close to being admin-ready. Good luck (✉→BWilkins←✎) 09:14, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Feel free to move the listing to another subheading if you feel there is a more appropriate one, but hopefully I've got it right! - Shudde talk 08:32, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your help (and for your patience!). I'm sure it'll be okay under that heading, and somebody can move it if they feel strongly. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:01, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Klemens Murańka

Hi.

You userfied to User:Shoessss/Klemens Murańka after the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Klemens Murańka but Shoessss (talk · contribs) no longer seems to be very active. Muranka has been competing at the World Cup level since 2011 and has one WC podium finish as part of the Polish team. Could you either move this article to mainspace where I will add the world cup info or transfer to my user space where I will work on it and move it?

Thanks. -- Whpq (talk) 10:30, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

  • In the media: Jimmy Wales is not an Internet billionaire; a mass shooter's alleged Wikipedia editing
Amy Chozick's profile of Jimmy Wales in the New York Times sparked significant controversy in international news outlets this week. Chozick's profile covered Wales's personal life, including his 12-year-old daughter, ex-wife, and current wife Kate Garvey, describing Wales himself as "a well-groomed version of a person who has been slumped over a computer drinking Yoo-hoo for hours." Chozick described his current role in Wikipedia as "Benevolent Dictator for Life", a statement which garnered conflict from all corners of the web, including from Wales, who responded to the piece as a whole with a lengthy talk page statement.
  • Featured content: Queen of France
Four articles, four lists, and fifteen pictures were promoted to "featured" status on the English Wikipedia last week.
  • WikiProject report: Puppies!
This week, the Signpost went to the kennel and interviewed WikiProject Dogs. The project has several featured and good articles, along with a large number of "Did you know" entries. We asked three project members about the challenges of creating, curating, and maintaining canine content in an increasingly dog-obsessed world.
  • News and notes: Wikipedia's medical collaborations gathering pace
The key annual event in the Wikimedia calendar, Wikimania 2013, will be held in Hong Kong in just five weeks' time. Among the events will be a presentation by two people who are working to promote the development of medical content on Wikimedia projects. One is James Heilman of Wiki Project Med, a non-profit dedicated to making "clear, reliable, comprehensive, up-to-date educational resources and information in the biomedical and related social sciences freely available to all people in the language of their choice". The other is Lori Thicke, president of Translators Without Borders (TWB), the Connecticut-based organisation set up in 2010 to provide pro-bono translation services for humanitarian non-profits
  • Technology report: VisualEditor in midst of game-changing deployment series
The VisualEditor extension has gone live by default to registered users on the English Wikipedia, marking a huge milestone in a project that has taken the best part of a decade to reach fruition. The extension was previously described as "the biggest and most important change to our user experience we’ve ever undertaken" by the WMF team behind it.
  • Traffic report: Yahoo! crushes the competition ... in Wikipedia views
The real world made a strong showing in the top 10 last week, as news stories such as Yahoo!'s purchase of Tumblr, the murder of Odin Lloyd, the continuing drama over NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and the ill-health of Nelson Mandela crowded out the usual roster of TV shows, movies, websites and video games. Not that they were entirely excluded, of course.
  • Arbitration report: Tea Party movement reopened, new AUSC appointments
Following a one-month period of moderated discussion, Tea Party movement has been reopened by the Committee. The proposed decisions are currently being voted upon. Race and politics remains suspended pending the return of User:Apostle12.

  • News and notes: Wikimedia Foundation Board appoints world expert in women's issues, global south
In apparent acknowledgment of the urgency of two issues facing the Wikimedia movement—the need to engage both women and the global south—the WMF Board has appointed Ana Toni as one of its four expert members. Toni will bring rare expertise to the movement, and the Signpost understands that her skills in advocacy and her key roles in international NGOs are likely to be a natural match with the WMF as the hub of disseminating free knowledge around the world.
  • Dispatches: Infoboxes: time for a fresh look?
The fundamental idea of an infobox is clear: keep it simple and limited to essentials. At some point, however, these basic principles seem to have been abandoned, in favour of an approach akin to "the more the merrier".
  • Featured content: The week of the birds
Five articles, six lists, and ten pictures were promoted to "featured" status on the English Wikipedia this week.

Reassessment

Reposting since it got archived Hi HJ, I hope all is well. I know you are away, but if you get a chance to do this it would be great. One of the conditions of my return was that you would review the restrictions after six months. Since that time has elapsed, I was wondering if you would reassess. Thanks for your consideration. Okay, I'll lift the restrictions, but for your own sake if nothing else, be careful. I'm not around regularly enough to pick up on these things, but if you start making edits that don't abide by both the letter and the spirit of policy (and relevant guidelines, ArbCom rulings, etc), I suspect it won't be long before you're in an even worse position than you were with the restrictions. For crying out loud be careful. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 08:14, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

220, 221 and 222

Hi HJ; I made it onto that train - the doors shut 5 seconds after I jumped on. As it was passing us, I forgot to check which class it was - I could have pointed out the bogies. I only noticed when I got off at Oxford that the train consisted of a Class 220 and a Class 221 coupled together, so at the join, you would have seen something like this - notice how the wheels of the Class 220 unit (left) are very much exposed compared to the other; in fact, the only components that obscure the wheel are the brake caliper and that footstep. On the class 221, there is the bogie frame, including one of the suspension springs. On class 220, the refreshment facilities consist of little more than a trolley. Class 222 has the same bogies as Class 220, but has "full" refreshment facilities - you can get hot food, I think that it's via a microwave oven. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:02, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Hey Redrose. I saw you get on the train, but alas it pulled away just as Widefox got to the top of the stairs (if I had a penny for every time that happened...). The difference is obvious now you point it out, thanks! As to the 222, I don't trust East Midlands Trains' definition of "hot food"!

Much as I'd like to, I probably won't be able to get to Oxford at the weekend. I've already committed to Chester and I'd like to support Bristol while it's getting off the ground, and I don't think I can afford a third train journey, even being creative with how I buy tickets. I'll do my best to get to the next one. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:57, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Apparently Class 222 also has fewer seats per coach - and therefore more kneeroom - than the other two. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:49, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
I've just found the bit of paper from last Sunday, so I'm updating my user page, but it's only got a few names on it. Around that table, there were ten people at one time or another, but I only have six handles: HJ Mitchell (talk · contribs); Mum's taxi (talk · contribs); Redrose64 (talk · contribs); Rock drum (talk · contribs); Victuallers (talk · contribs); and Widefox (talk · contribs). I'm still two people short. Do you recall who they were? --Redrose64 (talk) 16:35, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
Now the kneeroom I believe. Acalamari (talk · contribs) was there; as to the rest, I don't know. There was at least one who didn't have a username, and obviously others are very careful about what information they share about themselves. Main Page appearance: British military intervention in the Sierra Leone Civil War

This is a note to let the main editors of British military intervention in the Sierra Leone Civil War know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on August 10, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or one of his delegates (Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs)), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/August 10, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

David Richards

The United Kingdom's military intervention in Sierra Leone in May 2000 was the first large-scale intervention by British forces in the country's civil war. A team was dispatched under Brigadier David Richards (pictured in 2012) to evacuate foreign citizens after the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) advanced on the country's capital, Freetown. British forces then began to assist the U.N. Mission in Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Army (SLA). They first came into direct contact with the RUF 10 days after arrival, when the rebels attacked a British position near Lungi International Airport. While training the SLA for confrontations with the RUF, a British patrol was taken captive by a militia group known as the West Side Boys. Negotiations achieved the release of five soldiers; three weeks later, British special forces freed the remaining six, restoring confidence in the British mission. The RUF began to disarm after political pressure and economic sanctions were exerted on its supporter Liberia. The British training teams were replaced by an international force in September 2001. The mission's success vindicated several concepts, including the retention of high-readiness forces. (Full article...)

Invitation to participate in an interview in The Bugle newsletter

Hi Harry, In the upcoming edition of The Bugle Ian and I would like to run an interview with editors who have an interest in military history topics and are also active in Wikimedia chapters about their experiences with the chapter(s). If you're interested in participating, I'd appreciate it if you could respond to some or all of the questions at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/News/July 2013/Interview by next Monday 22 July. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 11:04, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nick, thanks for the pointer. I've left sme replies there. Feel free to move them or format them as necessary. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:43, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

WLM +

Harry. Thanks for your message on my talk page. As I say there, I shall not be at the Chester Wikimeet. IRO Wiki Loves Monuments, this seems to be concerned with taking photographs. So far as Cheshire is concerned, most of the Grade I listed buildings already have photographs, and so do a high proportion of the Grade II*. The major absentees are the country houses, for which there are frequently problems with access. I do not wish to commit myself to anything at present, but please keep me in touch with local happenings. Cheers. I'll watch this page for any response. --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 13:38, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Peter. Sorry, I didn't see the section further up. Hopefully there'll be a next Chester meetup and we'll meet there. Wiki Loves Monuments is of course primarily about taking photographs, but it's also about getting people involved in Wikipedia and getting existing Wikipedians together to do interesting things. It's also a key to other things, for example there have been discussions with English Heritage and its equivalents in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, so there's a possibility of an ongoing relationship with them that could be useful to those of us who write articles on listed buildings. Oh, and I expect if WLM is reasonably successful this year, we'll expand it to Grade II in the future—we kept it simple this year because it's the first time for the UK. Hi, I have posted a message on the Optical Express talk page re POV editors breaching previous agreement around consensus and direct edits. I would appreciate if you could visit and comment. Thanks. --Hardlygone (talk) 14:25, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the pointer. Golfbravoecho is clearly in the wrong and doesn't want to stick to the agreement, so I've blocked them. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:52, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Just to note, there were some previous edits which I highlighted an alternative for on the talk page too as I felt there were aspects of original research in some of the words used. I appreciate you looking at this --Hardlygone (talk) 14:57, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
I don't really have time at the minute to try an adjudicate thins on the talk page (besides, you see o be doing a good job), but I'll intervene if I see somebody's conduct fall that far below the standard for an encyclopaedia editor. What is it with that article? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:08, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
