Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
Latest comment: 1 year ago1 comment1 person in discussion
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
@Artichokedance: Hey there! My typical advice is that newcomers shouldn't start an article immediately. Correctly creating articles on Wikipedia takes a decent amount of experience, and you should try to build up your skills before trying this.If you're really set on this one, though, I'd love to help you do it right. First off, it's important to understand what exactly makes a subject notable for inclusion in Wikipedia. In most cases, you can follow our "general notability guideline" (GNG), which states:
A topic is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject.
That one's the standard rule, but there are also topic-specific guidelines that can help determine notability. For example, our notability guidelines for entertainers can apply here, so I'd recommend looking at those. Before you start trying to write the article at all, I'd recommend seeing if you can find 2–3 sources/articles that focus primarily on Wigmore and meet the criteria above. A few notes there:
We generally don't consider IMDb a reliable source because of its user-generated nature. For more info on that, see WP:IMDB.
As with most actors, many sources you'll come across are interviews. Those can be a weird point of contention here—see WP:IV for more details on whether it's appropriate to use them. If possible, I'd recommend trying to find multiple solid sources that aren't interviews first, so that notability is clearly established, then work on incorporating the appropriate content from the interviews later.
Don't get discouraged! It's tough to start a new article, even for more experienced contributors. Sometimes, subjects just aren't quite notable enough for an entry here, and that's okay.
Let me know if all that info made no sense—I know it's a lot to take in, but I'd love to help you through it. I'm here for you! Bsoyka (t•c•g) 18:12, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Hi, back in October last year I posted my first article around an "authenticated" internet, but at that time I hide it, because I need to consider that it is not obviously linked to the company I work for. Now I have taken the next step and last week posted on LinkedIn and it caught pretty much interest. What is novel, and where one possibly need a Wiki article, is that it is based on government provides Digital Identities. The thing, as described in the article, it is voluntary, and the use is decentralized, i.e. how it works with physical IDs. I now also posted an article related to the deadlock around CSMA and the not so good idea to legislate backdoors in WhatsApp etc. Protection of children has been the goal all the time, but I think we need an Wiki article on "authenticated" internet. And as I write in the article, one is free to use todays internet, be on darkweb, it is just that we should consider to carve out a place where children, but also others, can be more safe. Is this worth a Wiki article? Thanks in advance --DomPowNow (talk) 13:16, 7 February 2025 (UTC)

Hello, Bsoyka I wanted to ask what I have found conflicting information in the article about St. John Bosco, I have studied in a school in his name and one year they gave us all Memorias regarding his history and the history of our school, in my school Memoria it is said that he had a dream or a 'vision' that made him pursue his future goal of helping and becoming a priest, but you can see that in the article it is not mentioned, and I also wanted to ask how do I cite this old tattered book as my source? I do not trust it for no source is given in the book hell it probably wasn't even registered it was just given. Currently scouring the internet for answers thank you very much for your help and uhm p.s English is my second language so please if you have the time try to correct if I said something wrong. --General Wait-And-See (talk) 14:15, 8 February 2025 (UTC)

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.
Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Sammi Brie(submissions), with 846 round points from 16 GAs about radio and TV stations, 45 GA reviews, and 3 DYKs.
Hey man im josh(submissions), with 816 round points from 5 FLs about sports and Olympic topics, 46 FL reviews, 3 ITN articles, and a large number of bonus points.
MaranoFan(submissions), with 815 round points primarily from 3 FAs and 1 GA about music, in addition to 9 article reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Hello! I was wondering how to create a link from one wikipedia page to another via a mobile device. (hyper link) --Zm8n (talk) 03:39, 20 March 2025 (UTC)
Hello @Zm8n. Bsoyka appears to be inactive for a bit, so I'll be answering this. If you are editing with the source code directly, links should look like this which would appear visually as this. To make a link that directs to an article that's named differently from the text, it would be typed out like that which would appear visually like that. Hi, and thank you in advance for your help. I'm trying to do a simple edit of Luke Hobson's page. I am named as his coach, which is correct, but Luke had Sharon Weiss and Nenad Rodic at Lakeridge Swim Team. The best citation for which there is no conflict whatsoever is our website https://fullcirclenv.com/LAKEWP/
This is the best and only citation available other than the fact that Mr Rodic has been coaching at Lakeridge for over 20 years and was also instrumental in Luke's development. Thank you. --Helga62 (talk) 23:58, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.
Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:
History6042(submissions) with 1,088 round points from four featured lists about Michelin-starred restaurants, nine good articles and a good topic mostly on Olympic-related subjects, seven ITN articles, and dozens of reviews
Gog the Mild(submissions) with 1,085 round points from three FAs, one GA, and four DYKs on military history, as well as 18 reviews
Arconning(submissions) with 887 round points, mostly from four FLs, six GAs, and seven DYKs on Olympic topics, along with more than two dozen reviews
In addition, we would like to recognize Generalissima(submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.
The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. @Bagumba: Hey! Yes, that task should still be running daily, although it seems it hasn't made any edits in a while. Looking at a few of those links, I can't see from a quick glance where they actually link to the 2025 page, which is strange. It's also worth noting that the bot won't remove all links to that redirect page, as it avoids making cosmetic edits. For example, the bot won't change 2025 NFL draft to 2025 NFL draft because there's no real difference to the reader. Bsoyka (t•c•g) 21:45, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in sticky decoration wrapper. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.

Hi, Ben. We're talking about a change to your bot at Help talk:CS1 errors. I think it will be an easy change (when the bot fixes the URL, please add a little template, too), and it's not an emergency. This can wait until exams are over. Best of luck with your exams. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:37, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
@WhatamIdoing: Hey! I'll let the discussion on this one play out a bit before looking into implementing this—I have a feeling it'll be a bit controversial as all things are on Wikipedia. I'm also not sure it would be as easy of a change as it may seem. As it is right now, the bot basically works by searching for the Wikipedia Library URLs in plain text (think about your typical find/replace in a text editor). This means it wouldn't know the difference between citation templates, external links, or even plain text URLs in articles, which is great for cleaning up TWL links but would make it a bit tricky to have the bot accurately place the icon by citations. Also, exams went pretty well, and I'm now done with the school year—thanks for the encouragement! Hi Ben, thank you for your kind interest to help me navigate Wikipedia. I quite don't understand the notability criteria for persons articles. What does the source being independent of the person imply? I need your assistance on this. And what can I do if I received a redirect message asking me to improve my article? --Monica Joyce (talk) 18:09, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
@Monica Joyce: Hey there! To share some general info, as mentioned in our notability criteria for people, People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple publishedsecondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. This means we only write about a subject when multiple other reliable sources have written about them first. As for the independence part, that simply means if the subject (or someone close to them) writes about themself, that source doesn't count toward establishing notability. For example, if I were to publish an autobiography about myself and my mom wrote another book about me, neither of those would help establish notability for a Wikipedia article about me. Now, that's not to say such sources can't be used at all—they still hold great information in many cases, but they don't show a subject's notability according to our standards.I hope this helps! If you can link to which draft you're asking about in particular, I might be able to provide more specific guidance. Bsoyka (t•c•g) 18:12, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

I have already advanced a lot without help, but now I must use some. I want to create a page for Ennea Lata, a species firsst described by E.A. Smith. I'm aware that the article is not an orphan, so I have that.
Let me wrap this up. I don't know how to create a Speciesbox. I tried using the template, but it didn't work.

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)
@HouseBlaster, AstonishingTunesAdmirer, and TechnoSquirrel69:What a pleasant surprise! I'm truly honored to see that I've been able to positively impact a handful of people around here. With seemingly small contributions like hunting down sources, it can be hard to remember the larger difference that we all make every day. Initiatives like this one help me remember that everything I've done here is all worth it. (So thanks for keeping EOTW running, @Buster7!)I went back to read the supports on this nomination—thank you for the kind words there, too, however tucked away in the page history they may be!I know my activity has been a little less consistent lately than I'd like it to be, but definitely consider this editor retained! (and incredibly appreciative!) (and totally only crying a little bit!) Bsoyka (t•c•g) 03:27, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
Two things I must share. 40 years ago my best friend ever passed away. He was a Yellow Lab/Weimaraner mix that my sons named Grover. I hope you can appreciate my pleasure when I saw the Image of Ghost on your talkpage. Also, I'm glad you took the initiative to go back and search for the seconds original entry. I do my best to integrate the seconds into the nomination, but space and duplication are considerations. Best to you. Buster7Chat17:47, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Library: Books & Bytes Issue 69, May–June 2025
In this issue we highlight a new partnership, Citation Watchlist and, as always, a roundup of news and community items related to libraries and digital knowledge.
Administrator elections will take place this month. Administrator elections are an alternative to RFA that is a gentler process for candidates due to secret voting and multiple people running together. The call for candidates is July 9–15, the discussion phase is July 18–22, and the voting phase is July 23–29. Get ready to submit your candidacy, or (with their consent) to nominate a talented candidate!
The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/July 2025/Candidates.
Here is the schedule:
July 9–15 - Call for candidates
July 18–22 - Discussion phase
July 23–29 - SecurePoll voting phase
Please note the following:
The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
The process will have a seven day call for candidates phase, a two day pause, a five day discussion phase, and a seven day private vote using SecurePoll. Discussion and questions are only allowed on the candidate pages during the discussion phase.
The outcome of this process is identical to making a request for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA versus administrator elections.
Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.
If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.
You're receiving this message because you signed up for the mailing list. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the list.
On July 23, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's totals during the election. You must be extended confirmed to vote.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last approximately four days, or perhaps a little longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and must also have received a minimum of 20 support votes. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").
Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the 27th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter, covering all our favorite new and updated user scripts since 2025! Boy, does it feel good to kick off the year with an issue. Yep, it's been a year since we cleared out the 2022-2024 backlog with issues 23 and 24! Good times. Though in this case "a year" just means... 6 months? 😯 The salience of whatever joke I was planning to make here has vanished speedily. Aaron Liu (talk) 21:00, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
Got anything good? Tell us about your new, improved, old, or messed-up script here!
Featured script
WikiTextExpander by Polygnotus, is this edition's featured script. At the click of a configurable hotkey, this script will find and replace or link a configurable list of phrases within the selected text in all source editors (even in the comment/reply field!). Besides allowing the quick insertion of templated messages, this script greatly mitigates the WP:WTF? problem by providing both the legibility of familiar words and the convenience of shortcuts. And to those asking, the capitalization of "Wikitext" as "WikiText" was a necessary sacrifice for far-more-memorable acronymy.
Updated scripts
CanonNi: AlertAssistant has been fixed and rewritten using OOUI instead of Twinkle's Morebits. Such modern, very tool. (Do note that the maintainer has since become inactive.)
NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh/AjaxLoader has been updated to use modern JS APIs that replace the browser's URL bar with the link you clicked on to load in place. The "back" (and "forward") buttons also work now. Cool, innit?
andrybak: Unsigned helper no longer shows an error when the message to sign was added in the earliest 50 revisions of a page's history. This is especially relevant to pages with short histories.
BilledMammal/Move+ needs updating to order list of pages handle lists of pages to move correctly regardless of the discussion's page, so that we may avoid repeating fiasco history.
Requested scripts
We need scripts that...
allow sorting lists of citations such as by URI or other identifier
automatically convert the capitalization of citations' titles
collect a list of discussion participants and generate a ping list
In breaking m:Tech/News, Gadgets can now include .vue files. This makes it easier to develop modern user interfaces using Vue.js, in particular using Codex, the official design system of Wikimedia. Codex icons are now also available. The documentation has examples.
New scripts
Appo/Globstory integrates OpenHistoryMap, updating the map whenever hovering/clicking on a location or year, the latter of which changes the map to be (hopefully) accurate to the year selected. It's pretty interesting.
linkinfo Somewhat similar to WP:NavPops, Awesome Aasim/linkinfo(pictured) provides a collection of links to replace the right-click context menu, presented beautifully.
PreviousDiscussions provides a link to search for your username on subpages of another user's userpage and talkpage conveniently.
Twineeea/noRedLinks brings you to the "read" instead of the "create" tab when you visit a red link. Contemplate life's mysteries as you stare into the blank! Deeply.
No, this is not going to be the enduring tradition of S++ for the future. This was meant to be a joke for the special occasion on the first day of the fourth month but was delayed by four months because I'm lazy.

Im trying to get that the USNS Big Horn is to be deactivated. Wikipedia is cryptic in how to send info to an editor to get this added . Theres nothing easy about getting legitimate information added by a Wikipedia sanctioned editor to a topic. Im not looking for credit. Im looking for the page to b updated. --Bluemule1 (talk) 02:52, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
@Bluemule1: Hey there! We don't generally have a way to send info to a "Wikipedia-sanctioned editor" because those don't exist. Wikipedia is open for anyone to edit, including you! If you're uninterested or unsure of how to edit the article on your own, you could also bring up the change on its talk page. (Just be sure to share reliable sources to support the changes you propose!) Bsoyka (t•c•g) 17:32, 3 August 2025 (UTC)

hey i do have a question about something, there is a important topic on a page that needs to be addressed and this has been discussed for maybe a year or two its about changing a political parties political position i think it is important to address the actually position of all parties on wikipedia and for some reason this has been addressed and agreed by many and its about reform uk political positioning.
i believe like many many others that it should be changed from "right wing" to "right - far right" because of multiple independent sources of major global media (e.g le monde, al jazeera, byline times, dw and the washington post) now consistently classifying the party as far right.
reform uk's policies on immigration, criminal justice, national identity and civil liberties - along with its anti-diversity stance and rhetoric around open borders and crime - are increasingly aligned with far right european populist movements like the AfD and PiS.
in contrast, the conservatives are already placed as centre right - right wing, so leaving reform uk in the same category no longer reflects the ideological gap between them.
id appreciate your advice or input on how to approach this change properly as me and many have been trying to discuss this but are being ignored. also in the archives you can see how many times this has been discussed. thank you --Jtttttt (talk) 15:46, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
@Jtttttt: Hey! Sorry for the late reply, but I think I'm going to let the discussion here continue and stand for itself, particularly as I'm not as knowledgable in this content area. Bsoyka (t•c•g) 17:44, 3 August 2025 (UTC)

Hi! I'm hoping to create two articles, but I have a conflict of interest. Could I ask you for some guidance before I proceed? I've outlined the COI on my user page. Thank you! --RileyRobbins (talk) 18:18, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
@RileyRobbins: Hey there! I apologize for the delayed response here. Thanks for reading up on our COI guidelines! My main advice is to go through the Articles for Creation process, which allows you to draft your articles outside of the main article space before submitting them for review from an experienced editor who can guide you through any issues and publish the article. Hello Bsoyka! I have in my hands a dilemma of great significance. Assuming that I closed the peer review, I need to decide if I nominate Outline of Spain for FL or if I decide to improve the article. I actually don't even know if I can, as I'm listed only as the third contributor of the article. Personally, I consider it does pass the FL criteria, but I am 0% sure of that.
When the nomination comes, could you help me get it through? --Earth605 (talk) 15:02, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
@Earth605: Hey there! To be fully honest with you, I'm not intimately familiar with the FL criteria/process, so I probably can't help you much more than you can help yourself. (I'd be figuring it out as I go too!) If you have any more specific concerns you need help with as you're going through the review process though, let me know and I'd be happy to try to lend a hand! Hello - how do I remove superfluous entries in "References" - specifically in the Bruce Woolley Page - for example numbers 11-16 are irrelevant. Thank you. --Thereminwoo (talk) 11:27, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
@Thereminwoo: Hey there! On Wikipedia, references are generally defined in the source code of an article alongside the sentence they appear with. For example, when I add a citation here,[1] the reference content appears at the bottom of the article for the viewer, but the actual code for the reference is next to the word here,.However, I advise you to be careful in removing what you think are irrelevant references. 11-16 on that article, while they may appear generic at first, are actually providing valuable info. For example, reference 11 is used to support the sentence, In 1985, Woolley co-wrote Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm., which it does quite well. Bsoyka (t•c•g) 17:57, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
