Sources
Can someone source this bit: "Supposedly, Barbara Bush told her husband George Bush that he should choose Dan Quayle as a running mate because he looked like Redford. Redford then began some speeches by saying, "Hello. I'm Dan Quayle." However, Redford resented the equation as he and the former Vice President are on the opposite sides of the political spectrum."? Written like a review
This article is not encyclopedic enough. Too many adjectives are used and it reads like a biography you'd read on a personal website. "He made a fine romantic lead..." "a glowing Barbra Streisand" - User:24.153.178.198 04:06, 20 April 2007 (UTC))
- Agreed, it needs pretty serious revision Bluetubist 03:28, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- "His good looks had weathered after years in the Utah sun and wind, but with kind lenses he could still romance younger actresses." This article is unintentionally funny. Someone re-write this now. Stan weller 03:36, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
I feel like I've made a huge change in this article already, but there's a lot of work still to do. I'll get back on it just as soon as I can. Unschool (talk) 06:10, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
I am removing the subjectivity criticism, which states that "This article may contain wording that promotes the subject subjectively without imparting verifiable information. Please remove or replace such wording, unless you can cite independent sources that support the characterization." Robert Redford is one of the most famous, and documented, individuals in Hollywood and much of the information in this article is easily verifiable. I am removing the subjectivity tag as being silly and completely unnecessary. 76.161.2.107 (talk) 04:24, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Eponymous dessert dish
I've heard once or twice a reference to Robert Redford pie or cake, which is a cheesecake/CoolWhip® mix in a crust made with chopped nuts and topped with pudding (see, for example, a recipe here). What is the connection with him? Did he make one in a movie? Thanks. knoodelhed (talk) 00:55, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Anthem, An American Road Story: there is a segment in this film concerning the States, and reference to dormant political agenda, if that defines anything, and profound revelations for those who want to see. Themes greatly appreciated. peace75.248.114.26 (talk) 15:08, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Films in lede
Are all of the films mentioned in the lede significant and notable? These should be pared down to 5 or 6 that are most important in his dual careers as actor and director. ---RepublicanJacobiteTheFortyFive 14:34, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
re: political activity
"Lacking integrity, Redford endorsed President Obama's re-election campaign in 2012." this is a judgemental statement. the whole last part on president obama is irritating as it does not reflect the contents of the two mentioned articles. yes, he is critical but he is also supportive in both. so why does that make him "lacking integrity" and since when is it permissible in an encyclopedic article to cast a judgment? i am taking the liberty to erase this part until a credible source, stating that redford is "lacking integrity", can be included.--96.63.2.129 (talk) 22:26, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
Redford went beyond politics to action in helping negotiate between developers and environmentalists. He would invite both parties (or all interested parties) to a meeting and they would attend because he was inviting them. Negotiations followed that mitigated some environmental impacts. He established the Center for Resource Management (based in Denver, CO) to carry out this work and eventually he did not actually do the inviting or attend, but the Center was able to continue the work, e.g., help Walmart build more environmentally-friendly stores, and help golf courses be less environmentally damaging, among other such negotiations. This is a side of Redford that is not well-known and deserves more attention in the Redford page. By chance, when he was on his way home to Utah from a directors' meeting in San Francisco of a non-profit he started, I sat next to him on a commercial flight airplane, and he told me he had just published an OpEd in the NYT on climate change. He is a doer, not just a talker; making a difference for the environment, film, and politics.93.71.59.159 (talk) 22:27, 11 January 2016 (UTC)Hal Levin 20:26 UTC 11 January 2016.

Robert Redford narrated a wildlife documentary on BBC Two called "Earth: One Amazing Day". This could go in the section on his television career. Vorbee (talk) 20:49, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Hiatus
Maybe I missed it, but why did Redford take a two-year (1977-79) "hiatus"? One place (IMDb) I read said it was a 2-1/2 year semi-retirement during which Redford purposely isolated himself. True? Not true? How about some facts about the "hiatus"? Just curious and thinking. 2600:8800:784:8F00:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 03:25, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Lineage correction needed.
There is no such thing as SCOTCH-Irish as used in this and many other articles. Scotch is a drink whereas people from Scotland are Scots. 2600:1702:56AC:D800:9473:B663:55E4:1EB6 (talk) 14:05, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
- "Scotch-Irish" is a demonym used by Americans to refer to themselves, and it's part of the American English, even though the same word and meaning is considered archaic and derogatory in British English. This page (and the Scotch-Irish Americans page) are predominantly US topics, so convention is to write them in US English, even if that offends other English speakers. 192.33.249.119 (talk) 15:01, 16 September 2025 (UTC)

Dialog vs Monologue
In the description of All Is Lost it says "almost no dialogue". There is no dialogue at all, a dialogue being between two people. There is brief monologue, but only Redford's character speaks, and we never learn his name, and the purpose of his journey is to be interpreted by the viewer. 100.15.184.194 (talk) 04:28, 18 September 2025 (UTC)
Quote
The quote about Trump is sourced to a news article. But then it is also sourced to book that has nothing to do with Robert Redford and is unnecessary to source the quote. Both the book and the cite to it should be removed from the article. The quote, if it is to be included in the article, should be the full quote, not the edited down version. 2601:681:4E80:A640:45CB:2501:71D1:2677 (talk) 19:51, 19 September 2025 (UTC)

New infobox image after death
Here are the options for the proposed infobox change
- Option 1 (2012; current)
- Option 2 (1997)
- Option 3 (also 1997)
- Option 4 (2005)
- Option 5 (2006)
- Option 6 (2013)
- Option 7 (1971)
- Option 8 (1967)
- Option 9 (1973)
- Option 10 (2006)
- Option 11 (2009)
DvTor8303 (talk) 10:27, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
- Option 7: After the subject of an article dies, their infobox image is typically replaced with a black&white image/one of them during their prime. Option 7 does that and if other articles are doing that we should follow that precedent here as well. TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 15:11, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
- @TDKR Chicago 101 I agree. Spectritus (talk) 16:04, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
- Option 7 ItsShandog (talk) 16:03, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
Does it always have to be black and white?
- Responding to this: Usually the image used on the infobox after someone dies typically shows that person during their 'prime' often when they were younger. Sometimes it just so happens that the image is in black&white. In some instances, black&white images are the only images showing people in their prime. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 16:06, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
- But the discussion of "prime" can be subjective. And when a person has had a long and active career, what really is their prime? I don't think it necessarily means when they were in their 40s for instance. Option 7 shows him at 35, but in 1971 was he really in his prime in terms of recognition and stardom?
- Since there seems to be no other post '71 photos or any from the 80s, I would vote for option 3. Here he would be 61, just after middle age, and after having attained some of his greatest successes. 2604:3D09:9284:2500:2006:6A66:3B23:1BE4 (talk) 16:17, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
- Option 7: Obituaries note that the 1970s were his prime:
- "In his ’70s heyday, few actors possessed Redford’s star wattage" -Variety
- "Redford achieved huge critical and commercial success in the 60s and 70s...one of the defining movie stars of the 1970s, crossing with ease between the Hollywood new wave and the mainstream film industry" -The Guardian
- "In the 1980s, Redford seemed to deliberately slow down in order to do more thoughtful work" - LA Times
- Also worth noting the only time he was never nominated for a "Best Actor" Academy Award was for The Sting (1973)
- Option 9 is too washed out and he has one eye closed, so option 7 is best. TarkusABtalk/contrib 18:15, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
- Option 7 is the best by far at capturing his essence. ~ HAL333 18:27, 17 September 2025 (UTC)

- Resolution quality could not be worse..... and the type of image is specifically discouraged "Use the best quality images available. - I don't think the quality is that bad. It's not dark or blurry, nor is it a video still. TarkusABtalk/contrib 23:41, 17 September 2025 (UTC)

- I think you are confusing a "publicity still" (photograph) with a "still frame". Here is the original publicity still distributed by NBC in 1971; scroll down to see the reverse side of the paper, demonstrating this was indeed a distributed still: Commons:File:Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here – Katharine Ross and Robert Redford stills.jpg TarkusABtalk/contrib 08:33, 18 September 2025 (UTC)

- Agree that Image 7 is not just low-quality, it's hard to see his features. Until a better photo from the time period is available, I'd implement Option 1 or 3. Yeoutie (talk) 16:29, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
- Option 7. Though it has its issues (black and white, quality), it is the best of the presented options because it shows him at the peak of his career. To me, it also effectively conveys his persona. — Goszei (talk) 06:43, 25 September 2025 (UTC)

Mr. Redford, when he was young, was arguably one of the best looking men to ever grace the silver screen. He is worthy of a better photo than this newspaper clipping, showing the movie make up smear. Clarawolfe (talk) 05:27, 17 October 2025 (UTC)
edits concerning alcoholism
I added some edits which described Redford's earlier problems with alcoholism which another editor reverted out of hand with specious claims that valid reporting of his problems with alcohol were "tabloid speculation". He is deceased and WP:BLP no longer applies (though WP:BDP does for a time). I think it's relevant to his article to include it and the sources used were not "tabloid", despite the reverting editors comments they were. Let's discuss whether or not this aspect of his life deserves mention. I think it merits inclusion. ~2025-31378-13 (talk) 07:33, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
