Speedy deletion nomination of Lebanese Christians (disambiguation)

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Lebanese Christians (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 20:15, 6 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Natg 19, I think we've decided that the best solution would be to disambiguate all of the links to head to Gaius Julius Hyginus. If you're still so inclined, that'd be a great help. Thanks! Michael Aurel (talk) 22:27, 1 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, sorry for the confusion. That link Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs formerly redirected to the disambiguation page Foreign secretary, so I made the changes to directly link it to Foreign Secretary (United Kingdom). Later on, a different user directly redirected the previous link to FS (UK). Natg 19 (talk) 00:11, 20 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
The confusion is caused by the perennial silly-buggery about capital letters. The SSFCD page should always and only ever link to the page about the British FS. People move things and then don't bother to fix incoming redirects. DuncanHill (talk) 00:22, 20 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Junior Bridgeman.jpg

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Junior Bridgeman.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.Bagumba (talk) 07:25, 13 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Introduction to contentious topics

edit

You have recently edited a page related to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Explain your edit

edit

Would you care to explain why you made this edit reverting my change of where San Diego, United States directs? Seeing as you only wrote "undo" for an edit summary, it seems reasonable to ask. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 18:27, 7 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

The city in California is already the primary topic for "San Diego", so I believe it is also correct to also direct San Diego, United States to the same target, instead of to the disambiguation page. Additionally, for a 9-year old redirect, I believe Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion is a better place to discuss/change the target of a redirect. Natg 19 (talk) 18:30, 7 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Further work on Michael Rosen (author)?

edit

Hi, Natg-

I had just started looking at the Michael Rosen moves when you fixed it--thanks so much--but I think there are still a couple of issues. I don't know if you're still looking at this. One is that Michael Rosen is a link to Michael Rosen (disambiguation) instead of the other way around. The other is that because of this, the fact that there are still 436 links to the (redirect to the) DAB is mostly invisible. Is there a request outstanding to swap the DAB and the redirect?

Thanks, Dan Bloch (talk) 02:24, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Actually the second thing I said probably isn't true. The bot probably will update the DAB with {{incoming links}} but it hasn't gotten around to it yet. Dan Bloch (talk) 02:32, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Danbloch yeah this does need to be swapped. The original mover created a dab page at Michael Rosen and did not realize there was already a dab page at Michael Rosen (disambiguation). But on 2nd thought, I have been wondering if the author is the primary topic for Michael Rosen, and if the move needs to be reverted / further discussed. Natg 19 (talk) 03:12, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I did wonder about that. Michael Rosen the author has 27 times as many page views as all the other Michael Rosens together. Dan Bloch (talk) 03:35, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Harvard University?

edit

What's the idea of replacing "Harvard College" with "Harvard University" in so many places? Do you plan to do this for people who attended Radcliffe? Or for people who attended the B-school, the med school, the law school, the Kennedy school, etc.? "Harvard College" just fits the bill for people who attended Harvard College. The way that Harvard draws its org chart (I know that not all universities do it this way), Harvard College still exists as an entity, and operates independently of the other schools. Bruce leverett (talk) 01:28, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Bruce leverett:
I have been trying to "update" prose to match up with infoboxes as many infoboxes say Alma Mater of Harvard University, but in the prose, it just mentions attending Harvard College. Though College may be technically accurate (as the undergraduate college), it seemed odd to me to use the subunit of Harvard College instead of the overall institution of Harvard University. Is it incorrect to say that an person is a graduate or attendee of Harvard University? (vs Harvard College)
I also think that the use of Harvard College could be a mistake by those who intend to refer to the University as a whole.
I have been reverted for this by others as well, so I will refrain from continuing while this talk discussion is ongoing.
(also pinging Hawkeye7, Midnightdreary and WFinch) Natg 19 (talk) 21:54, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
The J. Robert Oppenheimer article originally said "Harvard University", but was changed to "Harvard College" in 2008 with the comment "more accurately". Hawkeye7 (discuss) 00:31, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for explaining why you were doing this. Of course, if the infobox and the article disagree with one another, either one can be changed.
As far as I know, if a person graduated from Harvard College, it is OK to say that he graduated from Harvard University. But it is also OK to say he graduated from Harvard College.
Regarding the other schools, if a person graduated from Radcliffe, it is OK to say that she graduated from Radcliffe, but since many readers may not immediately know that Radcliffe was part of Harvard University, some of our articles about Radcliffe graduates say things like "Radcliffe College of Harvard University". For example Ursula K. Le Guin says this in the text, but the infobox just says "Radcliffe College". There may be similar situations with, for example, the Kennedy School, and well-known schools in other universities, such as Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Harvard College is really an "undergraduate college". Harvard really is drawing the org chart in a distinctive way, because many professors teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. The implication for us is that if someone went to Harvard as an undergraduate, we can confidently say they went to Harvard College, and if we say that, readers know that that was the person's undergraduate alma mater.
In conversation, when we are describing where someone went to college, we seldom use either "college" or "university". For example, we say "He went to Harvard", or "He went to Pitt". But this is formal writing, where we are expected to say something formal, I suppose.
"Harvard University" may in some cases be anachronism. Harvard didn't become a university until around 1780. I don't think any of your edits so far have dealt with pre-1780 students, but I didn't check closely.
In the edit to Joseph McCarthy, we are paraphrasing some (unnamed) speaker, and I do not know, without access to the cited source, whether the speaker said "Harvard", "Harvard College", or "Harvard University". Since it's in the context of a dinner given by an undergraduate organization, perhaps we should link to Harvard College, but since the speaker probably didn't say that, perhaps we should just pipe that to Harvard.
In Harvard Crimson, we're talking about NCAA varsity sports, which is (correct me if I'm wrong) strictly an undergraduate thing, so perhaps we should stick with Harvard College. In your edit to Harvard University, you were in text that was talking about varsity sports, so again, it is perhaps appropriate for the text to say "Harvard College" rather than "Harvard".
Since either Harvard College or Harvard University is OK to use for someone who attended Harvard as an undergraduate, I would say that if you really want consistency between the text and the infobox, you are free to modify either to match the other. But for the same reason, this consistency isn't necessarily something worth fighting for. Bruce leverett (talk) 03:25, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello, former Harvard University employee here. Just a quick way to summarize: Not all Harvard University grads are Harvard College grads, but all Harvard College grads are Harvard University grads. --Midnightdreary (talk) 11:38, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hope you are doing well. I wanted to reach out because I noticed that you are also working on cleaning up disambiguation links using DisamAssist. For me, it is a bit annoying having to click the skip button when choosing to pass over certain links, so I just made a user script that allows you to use the space bar to skip the current disambiguation page instead of the button itself.

Just wanted to share with you in case that's a pain point for you as well!

importScript('User:3602kiva/DisamAssist-Skip.js'); is the line of code to add onto the Special:MyPage/common.js page. It should not interfere with anything else.

Reversion of disambiguation redirect

edit

Hi, I noticed you manually reverted my edit that changed the redirect Kalahari from Kalahari Desert to Kalahari (disambiguation). Could you explain? I disagree that Kalahari Desert would be a primary target prioritized more than several of the other similar pages found on the disambiguation page. FMRadio :3(chat | edits | she/her) 21:04, 14 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@FMRadio: do you have evidence that the Kalahari Desert is not the primary topic? The desert to me meets the long-term significance criterion. Natg 19 (talk) 21:37, 14 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the title move

edit

You have moved “List of Indian Bengali films of 2021” back to “List of Bengali films of 2021.” Could you please explain why you did this? The page clearly states that this list refers to films from the Indian state of West Bengal. Moreover, the term “Bengali” does not refer only to West Bengal—it also includes Bangladesh. In that case, how justified is it to label a list that includes only West Bengal’s films as “Bengali films”? রিজওয়ান আহমেদ (talk) 02:27, 15 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@রিজওয়ান আহমেদ: I do not have an issue with the page titles, but I reverted your "move" as the process is incorrect. If you wish to move an article, but there is already history at the title, you need to go through WP:Requested moves. Copying and pasting is not a correct way to move a page. The Bund dab

edit

Hi,

I was just wondering if you mind if I mass-rollback the disambiguation from The Bund to The Bund (Shanghai). I've reverted the undiscussed move as the article is long-established and identified as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC (and a similar move has been reverted before, in 2015). Hi,

I'm a newer Wikipedia editor and want to know when I get things wrong. I realize why my first edit(s) on Walter Clayton Jr.'s page were rolled back since the trade wasn't official yet (good learning experience). I was wondering why you rolled back the second edit I made. The trade was already on the official NBA transactions page and I stated that in my edit description and cited it in the article. Again, just trying to learn, I know I'm probably in the wrong somewhere here. Versigot (talk) 03:30, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Making it official

Regarding the ridings ..." the April 13 by-elections made it "official". It's all moot, but if it was about making it official, then that wouldn't happen until the MPs are sworn in.
