London Bridge

Coat of arms of the Greater London Authority

edit

The Greater London Authority was granted the right to use the arms of the former Greater London Council by King Charles III and the College of Arms on 2 December 2025. Should the coat of arms of the GLA now be displayed on the infobox of this page, or at least in the main body of the article? - https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/5009529 - https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/the-king-grants-the-mayor-of-london-permission-to-use-the-glcs-historic-coat-of-arms-85896/ - Dn9ahx (talk) 15:26, 7 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

As there were no objections, I have put this into effect. Dn9ahx (talk) 13:16, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
As the coat for arms for Greater London it belongs in that article, not here, the city article. See Rome and Paris for comparison, those articles have the coat of arms representing their respective cities. Nampa DC (talk) 05:35, 14 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Article review

edit

It has been a while since this article has been reviewed, so I took a look and noticed that it is quite long. Longer articles make the prose hard to navigate, especially on mobile, increase load times for readers with slower internet connections, and make it harder for the reader to find the most important information on the topic. I think there are several sections where information can be spun out into new or existing articles, and the information summarised more effectively here. Typically, I recommend that each section or subsection be 2-4 paragraphs, which is the average length of a Wikipedia article lead. Sections that might benefit from being shorter include:

  • The "Early modern" and "Late modern and contemporary" subsections in "History": the earlier sections are a lot shorter and I think these sections should try to match the level of information in those sections.
  • "Architecture": mention of specific buildings and monuments can be removed so the section can focus on more generalised statements about the city's architecture.
  • "Demographics": I think lots of this information can be spun out into Demographics of London. "Country of birth", "Ethnic groups" and "Languages" can be merged and summarised more effectively. "Religion" should focus on the statistics and remove mention of specific landmarks (like churches or mosques).
  • "Accents" can be summarised more effectively or spun out.
  • "Transport" suffers from MOS:OVERSECTION. I think lots of this information can be merged and spun out into Transport in London.
  • "Tertiary education" can have information spun out and summarised more effectively.
  • "Leisure and entertainment" is quite large. I recommend that the information be merged with "LGBT scene" and information be spun out into Culture of London and LGBT culture in London.
  • "Literature, film and television" lists too many people who are from the city, creating a MOS:SEAOFBLUE. I think this information should be spun out into Lists of people from London and removed from this section. I also think that the information can be summarised more effectively.

Should this article go to WP:GAR? Z1720 (talk) 14:39, 19 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Change picture

The panorama chosen as the first picture in the information box is way out of date. It's too old and needs to be updated. Surely there are better options? ~2026-18053-13 (talk) 03:50, 23 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

The article is quite detailed and long, and I think there are several sections where information can be spun out and information summarised more effectively.

Given the large subject, this section is effective at providing a short meaty summary, with a small number of well-chosen examples. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:02, 28 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Slimmed down; the links give access to the proper places for more detail. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:10, 28 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sectioning has been reduced and the text trimmed. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:23, 29 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • "Tertiary education" can have information spun out and summarised more effectively.

Culture of London: trimmed. Moved an LGBTQ para to the subsidiary article; the topic is rather distinct from the leisure theme of the earlier section, so best it stays. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:58, 28 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Removed a mass of film mentions; that takes care of most of the names. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:01, 28 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Climate

edit

The climate table should be updated. A new record high for May has been registered today at 35.0°C. ~2026-31260-78 (talk) 19:41, 26 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
