Editing This Article Again

edit

I was not satisfied with my edits while I was assigned this article. Therefore, I plan on coming back and doing a better job. I have 5 edits planned: 1) The different versions section could be condensed to remove unnecessary speculation and more concisely lay out the different versions. 2) Buchheim’s review doesn’t warrant its own section – this material needs to be cut down (much of it is inappropriate) and moved to the reviews section. 3) The “Historical Accuracy” section risks being Original research 4) There are specific parts of the “Production” section that need verification 5) The paragraph about the dialect of the speaks probably could be moved under production rather than characters. If no one objects, I will be implementing these changes as soon as I can.

Linking Hitler

edit

Should we link to Adolf Hitler in the plot summary section? My opinion is that we should, as it may provide the reader with useful background on the political leadership behind the protagonists. What do others think? John (talk) 17:57, 5 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

I think everyone likely to read this article knows who Hitler is and can surmise that there's an article about him if they want to know more, so I fail to see the point. We generally don't link to commonly understood words and phrases, and Hitler himself isn't particularly germane to this article, that I'm aware of. DonIago (talk) 18:13, 5 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think that is likely true, for those of us from the 20th century. I was born the year Winston Churchill died, so was brought up with WW2 history. I wonder though, for a 15-year-old Kenyan or Indian kid reading the article, if it might help them to know who he was? He is germane to the degree that the crew discusses him, as the article says. Kaleun

edit

The correct abbreviation for the rank "Kapitänleutnant" is "Kaleu" not "Kaleun". As to find here: https://www.bundeswehr.de/de/organisation/marine/begriffe-marine-glossar 2A00:20:11:3585:76D8:81E9:2708:BCC3 (talk) 18:26, 29 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Not Bundeswehr, Kaleun was fine in Wehrmacht and should be written so in the book as well. --Denniss (talk) 20:14, 29 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Commonly used during WW2 and used throughout the book is 'Kaleun'. --Zac67 (talk) 06:06, 30 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Inflation

edit

The figure given for the movies budget is much too low. 32 million Deutschmarks are nominally equivalent to 16 million Euros, but the inflation tag does nothing here. Today this movie would cost about 50 Million € to make. There is something wrong with the inflation template. ~2026-19466-83 (talk) 12:27, 29 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
