Talk:1992 Bosnian independence referendum

Major Expansion and Neutrality/Context Update (November 2025)

edit

Hello fellow editors,

I have just performed a major expansion and structural update on this article, based on a deep research dive into academic, legal (ICTY), and high-quality journalistic sources (as cited in the new version).

The primary goal was to address a significant neutrality (WP:NPOV) and context issue. The previous version heavily emphasized a purely ethno-religious narrative (i.e., "Muslims and Croats vs. Serbs"), which did not fully capture the civic and political complexity of the referendum.

Here is a point-by-point breakdown of the changes and the rationale behind them:

  1. Corrected Ethno-Religious Bias (WP:NPOV):
  • Problem: The article almost exclusively focused on the three nationalist parties (SDA, HDZ, SDS) and used the anachronistic term "Muslims" as an ethnonym, framing the event as a simple ethnic clash.
Fix: Added a new section: "The Referendum Question and Civic Support".
Rationale: This section explicitly balances the narrative.
It highlights the civic nature of the referendum question itself ("...a state of equal citizens...").
It introduces sourced facts [izvor 36, 126] that the referendum was supported by a broad coalition of seven parties, including five non-nationalist/opposition parties (SDP, Reformists, etc.).
It adds the context of inter-religious support, citing the joint press conference of Cardinal Vinko Puljić and Salih ef. Čolaković [izvor 40, 41].
  1. Added "Historiography and Terminology" Section (WP:ACCURACY):
  • Problem: The exclusive use of the term "Muslim" (as an ethnicity) is confusing for modern readers and historically imprecise post-1993.
Fix: Created a new section explaining the evolution of the term [izvor 90-107].
Rationale: This section provides crucial context, explaining that "Muslim" was the official constitutional term in 1992 (and used on the ballot) [izvor 92-95], but that the national name "Bošnjak" was officially re-adopted in 1993 [izvor 98]. The article now correctly uses "Bosniak" as the ethnonym, except when directly quoting historical documents.
  1. Nuanced the "Serb Boycott" (WP:NPOV):
  • Problem: The article presented the Serb boycott as monolithic, ignoring significant dissent.
Fix: Added sourced evidence of Serb participation.
Rationale: While the SDS did organize an active and widespread boycott [izvor 47-51], it's a failure of NPOV to ignore participation from that same group. The new text includes:
The expert testimony of Gen. Jovan Divjak (a Sarajevo Serb) estimating that "between 10 and 15% of Bosnian Serbs in larger cities... voted" FOR independence [izvor 60, 131].
The analysis of Prof. Mirko Pejanović (also a Serb member of the wartime presidency), who noted the 64% turnout would have been mathematically impossible without the participation of citizens from all nations [izvor 55, 122].
  1. Technical & Infobox Fixes (WP:MOS):
  • Problem: The Infobox was using incorrect parameters (causing preview errors) and the results table had formatting issues (wrong icon for "No" vote).
Fix: Corrected all parameters to align with {{Infobox referendum}} documentation (using yes, no, total, electorate instead of results_yes, etc.)
Fix: Added both the SRBiH flag (the entity holding the vote) and the RBiH flag (the resulting entity) to the infobox, with a caption explaining the transition.
Fix: Corrected the results table to use {{tick}} and {{cross}} properly.
Fix: Removed all manual bolding (...) from the article body for a cleaner, more encyclopedic look.

The goal of these changes was to make the article more comprehensive, historically accurate, and compliant with Wikipedia's core NPOV policy by presenting a more complete and nuanced picture of this pivotal event.
