Plot

edit

Aboard the Luna Moth, Emily has a dream where she talks to the Amulet's voice which says Emily will not be able to hear the voice within Cielis. The voice warns that she will still need the voices guidance and gives a warning, saying "Beware the hall of humble kings. Pass through to the end and the game will begin". The voice does not elaborate on what this means.

Emily awakens to Max introducing her to the city, entering via dropships. Navin, Karen, Enzo and Rico are entering the city separately, and discuss if it was fair for Trellis and Luger to be taken prisoner.

After Emily attempts to see the Guardian Council, but she as well as some others slowly realize that something strange is going on in the city, particularly because the streets are empty. Emily is sent to the void, which is a simulation which the Stonekeepers have to survive. If they die, they're turned to stone. Other young Stonekeepers show up angry at Max for omitting that the council tests are deadly, but Ronin and Pierce help Emily, and Max follows. Meanwhile, Leon, Enzo and Rico roam the city, finding it empty, contrary to memories of the busy streets. A girl called Alyson Hunter takes them to her family restaurant upon discovering they aren't "ghosts", where she explains that the Guardian Council was actually dead but re-animated to trick them into coming, and they rescue Trellis and Luger from their jail cell in Cielis. Meanwhile, Cogsley and Miskit are taken by an older Stonekeeper named Vigo, and they also adopt a baby wyvern, which Cogsley names Dagno, after the robot that Silas had never finished building. They leave to go find Cielis and rejoin the others, and Vigo decides to return with them as well. Emily, Max, Pierce and Ronin find the last shard of the Mother Stone, a stone governed by the original council that was used to create all of the amulets, which Silas wanted to destroy, prompting his exile. Pierce and Ronin turn to stone, and Emily finds out that they were simply reanimated dead Stonekeepers. Emily is forced to let Max go with the Mother Stone, as Max threatens her family if she attacks. Max is revealed to work for the Elf King, and brings the Mother Stone to him.

Title

edit

The title could be a double entendre. Emily and Vigo realize they are the last council at the end of the book, as they are the only Stonekeepers who will fight for the good of Alledia. It could also be referring to characters saying that the council is no longer what it once was, and that it changed like Vigo said, so the guardian council was metaphorically The Last Council.

Themes

edit

The main theme of The Last Council is that of deception or illusions. Cielis isn't what it was supposed to be, and it as well as Max, seem too good to be true. Emily has to realize she should have trusted her instincts after she's been manipulated, and work to fix it. The illusion of the dead being brought back to life, but are actually just stone statues, also represents this.

Reception

edit

Frank Plowright from The Slings and Arrows writes that this volume is "the most thrilling outing so far in what’s always been an enthralling series." He commends the book for packing a lot of story and thrill into one volume, and notes that Kibuishi's art style is simplistic, but that it benefits the stories tension.[4]

Author Colby Sharp praises all aspects of the story, writing "The plot is well developed, the characters are taken to a deeper level, the architecture in Cielis is amazing, and the message is powerful."[5]
