What about Great Lent?

edit

Why isn’t Great Lent showcased to the world? And even more importantly, Pascha, the Resurrection of Our Lord. ~2026-13327-27 (talk) 18:52, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Your lord was resurrected by Pascha? Says a lot about his character. Sahib-e-Qiran, EasternShah 19:01, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'd also like to understand what Wikipedia loves about Ramadan that deserves promotion over other religious events, such as Lent.
Likely, another episode of Ideological bias on Wikipedia. Spirarel (talk) 20:25, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
For the same reason there isn't a white history month. These topics are already well-covered in most Wikipedia editions, but especially English Wikipedia. You are free to propose this at MetaWiki though Sahib-e-Qiran, EasternShah 20:30, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
It is completely unacceptable for an encyclopedia to show favor in this manner.
Leave bias at the door. Edward Tivrusky IV (talk) 20:45, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's affirmative action for an encyclopedia Sahib-e-Qiran, EasternShah 21:01, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I believe you misheard me, so I'll say it again: It is completely unacceptable for an encyclopedia to show favor in this manner. An encyclopedia should not "love" anything.
Leave bias at the door. Edward Tivrusky IV (talk) 21:13, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't love anything, Wikipedia follows a very strict neutrality policy. The contest is trying to promote encyclopedic entries about Islam-related content, as it says "Neutral Point of View: Articles must adhere to a neutral point of view, presenting information fairly and without bias. Any viewpoints must be attributed to reliable sources.". I know that America has had budget cuts on education in order to fund wars, destabilize regimes, and oppress its own people but this amount of illiteracy is very concerning. Sahib-e-Qiran, EasternShah 22:01, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes... unfortunately, even Wikipedia is becoming a safe place for Islamists now... it seems like it's not even a conspiracy theory anymore, sadly. Sailoratlantis talk page 21:14, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Very big difference between islamists and Islam. Sahib-e-Qiran, EasternShah 22:03, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I disagree, but i'm not going to argue about this. This just shows how biased this website has become to certain kinds of ideologies. A shame. Sailoratlantis talk page 22:15, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
You've got 2.5k edits and have had an account since 2016; you should know WP:NOTFORUM by now. Sahib-e-Qiran, EasternShah 22:16, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
As far as I understand, Wikipedia is meant to remain neutral, especially when dealing with sensitive and controversial topics like religion. So why is there a prominently promoted event called "Wiki Loves Ramadan", while there are no equivalent events highlighted for Christians, Jews, or even atheists? Presenting something under that name and displaying it so visibly feels less like neutrality and more like endorsement. It inevitably raises questions about the intent and the message being conveyed.
I don't think your personal attacks directed at me will help to prove your point is legit. It just shows some kind of desperation. Sailoratlantis talk page 04:02, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
What does that have to do with this? The reason there is black history month is because of the oppression of black people in the past. they need no special recognition for any past wrongs since none happened! Actually Christianity has had more oppression by islam then Islam has ever had(its in the past now so there is no reason to hold a grudge). 72011copperfan2 (talk) 17:43, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Reopened the discussion as an admin action. Not necessarily going in the most productive direction in my opinion, but closing it isn't helpful either. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 23:23, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
The serious answer is that no one has got around to organising it. It could certainly be done things like recordings of all the Hymns we list at Template:Hymns and songs for Lent and Passiontide.©Geni (talk) 08:54, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Bias, Censorship and left-wing POV

edit

When the leftists with non-productive, non-essential jobs who dominate the editing here get caught showing favoritism to certain groups and beliefs, despite alleged impartiality, they shut down the comments they don't like. See below for exhibit A regarding Lent (Exhibit B could be why there still isn't a section in the SPLC subject article detailing why a charity needs offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, or even mentioning this allows foreign influence in their actions to go undisclosed.). Even when criticism of certain topics dear to the Left is allowed, it is carefully curated and the worst facts omitted. I'm an atheist, BTW, so no interest in any religion in itself, just the obvious bias demonstrated.  Preceding unsigned comment added by ~2026-81684 (talk) 22:37, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'm firmly on the left, and I agree with you that this is unacceptable behavior by an entity that should always aim to remain as neutral as humanly possible. Claiming to love Ramadan flies in the face of that. Edward Tivrusky IV (talk) 22:52, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Then maybe it's the difference between left and far-left. I see very little on this site that that show favoritism toward the Right. In any case, impartiality is what is required as no one can trust a site that is biased. I used to love Wikipedia 20+ years ago, coming daily to apprise myself of something new, but hardly use it these days. I certainly no longer donate money. ~2026-81684 (talk) 23:18, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Honestly, this is insane. Left-leaning myself, but saying Wikipedia loves Ramadan, that is clearly foregoing any attempt at impartiality.
Since no other religion gets promoted in this way, NO RELIGION AT ALL should be promoted this way, including Islam. Die-yng (talk) 23:58, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't want to assume people's intentions, with that said, I find this title for this project very very questionable, it clearly is against Wiki's impartiality. The 'loves ...' part really implies a favor for a religion and its practices. Even if it is a necessary topic for Wikipedia, an impartial title is needed. The topics such as long-term effects of fasting, for example, must be included and expanded. Khenamothara (talk) 09:01, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree. Why is only Ramadan being celebrated? Lent is currently happening for Christians. Why not celebrate both Lent and Ramadan? All this feels biased to me. There is nothing wrong with celebrating religious holidays, but it becomes wrong when only certain holidays are celebrated. Also, the "Wikipedia loves Ramadan" wording feels wrong. Either be inclusive or don't celebrate at all. 72011copperfan2 (talk) 03:03, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, this campaign has no place in an encyclopedia. The blatant woke activism only confirms Wikipedia is far from being either neutral or unbiased and doesn't even try to appear politically neutral anymore. Fbergo (talk) 10:34, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@72011copperfan2 As you seem to be interested, the Wiki Loves Folklore 2026 editathon is live and about documenting folk history and culture from all around the world. If you're able, please do go to local celebrations, such as for Easter, or churches, and take photographs! Wiki Loves Ramadan in particular was specifically organized a few years ago by some members of organizations like Wikimedia Tunisia, as a way of encouraging people to add content about the Islamic world, which we desperately need more of. The only reason there's no Wiki Loves Easter or Wiki Loves Lent is because nobody has organized it. We do celebrate Christian holidays, however - every year, for example, the Did You Know? section of the main page runs a Christmas-themed set of articles, which is always fun. If you'd like to get involved in that, you can check back in about November!
(And, by the way, the "Wiki Loves X" format is the standard naming practice for these editathons, by the way. It's a little twee for me, but ah well.)GreenLipstickLesbian💌🧸 18:47, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • The name Wiki Loves Ramadan is based on the standard format for editor outreach campaigns. As per that page, there is nothing stopping anyone from initiating a campaign for Lent, Easter, Passover, Diwali, Hannukah, Easter, or any other area where editors may have interest (examples on that page include Schools, Africa, Sport, and Monuments). That nothing is running right now is not a political agenda; it simply means that nobody has coordinated a project yet. Although it is too late for Lent and Easter, if anyone would like to collaboratively design a Christmas-themed campaign, please be bold and do so! Given how many people write extensively about Christianity- and Christmas-themed subjects in November and December, I expect you will find a very receptive audience.  Chris Woodrich (talk) 11:56, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
    • As an example, the WikiOfrenda 2025 campaign last year centered on Day of the Dead, and invited images of altars (ofrendas). As usual, if you want to see something happen on Wikipedia (or related projects), you can just go ahead and work on that. It's not as easy as complaining about what hasn't happened yet, but it's a lot more constructive.Penny Richards (talk) 16:57, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Would probably best to consider a second standard format. Something like "Wikipedia documents X".©Geni (talk) 23:31, 6 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Why is this here?

edit

This bar is at the top of every page. Why? Nobody wants to see it. Its ugly and an eyesore. How is this even remotely acceptable? Please get rid of it. ~2026-13406-64 (talk) 23:10, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I genuinely think there should be an option to disable these kinds of notifications altogether. It’s frustrating to feel like certain Wikipedia admins and bureaucrats assume that pushing this kind of stuff is appropriate. To me, that raises broader concerns about the direction things may be taking here. Sailoratlantis talk page 04:17, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't seem to have been a very well attended discussion and this discussion page has shown a very controversial reception in just a few days. Sira Aspera (talk) 15:53, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
agreed. We should not be seeing this banner by default, and the campaign should not exist as it is contrary to the rules and spirit of the encyclopedia Fa suisse (talk) 15:45, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

And Yom Kippur and Easter?

edit

Purim is this week, you love that one too? Not likely. Wiki has shown a lot of nonsense bias. ~2026-13463-13 (talk) 23:41, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

We would go for it if someone wants to organise it. We need an article on Megillah cases at least.©Geni (talk) 08:56, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Misleading concept

edit

`diverse customs and traditions observed during the month of Ramadan`

Whole idea of Islamic religious practice is uniformity, not diversity. Ramadan is no different. You get up, eat before sunrise, pray most of the day, break your fast at sunset, pray some more, and sleep. You can’t “introduce” any type of “customs and traditions” to what’s been clearly described by the prophet. This should be changed to “local habits some Muslims may have during Ramadan” in order to reflect the intentions. Fwd079 (talk) 02:46, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • The concept is sound. At the higher levels, you have the Sunni/Shia split. Then you have different madhab (schools of thought). Then you have different organizations at the super-national / national level that follow a specific madhab as well as a corpus of tafsir, which is shaped by regional practices and history. Then you also have local/national practices that differ not because of specific exegesis, but rather tradition (what is consumed at iftar in Java differs from that consumed in Baghdad, for example). Then you have historic practices, which were even more diverse because of oral transmission, as well as high levels of syncretism. Then you get into certain allowances made for unique situations, like fasting requirements for Muslims living near the poles or travelling in space. Islam is not a monolith, but an adaptive religion that has thousands of scholars seeking to maintain a specific essence while recognizing the needs of the times (and at times not even agreeing about the essence itself).  Chris Woodrich (talk) 11:51, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Withdraw the banner and stop this religious propaganda

edit

As a contributor to Wikipedia (with thousands of edits), I am a part of the encyclopedia. As such, I hereby testify that I did NOT subscribe anywhere, in any shape or form, to manifest my "love" for Ramadan.

Moreover, I am very strongly opposed to hijacking the community in order to pursue religious goals.

Therefore, I am asking to withdraw this banner and the general Ramadan campaign, which is polluting the commons which we are all working towards. Fa suisse (talk) 22:45, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

You can change not seeing the banner in preferences. It's not a hijacking. No one's going to withdraw either b/c of your opionins. Have a nice day.
Cheers, 🚂ThatTrainGuy1945 Peep peep! 21:03, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Showing this banner by default is foisting religious propaganda on Wikipedia users. You're driving people away from contributing to the encyclopedia with such hijacking. Fa suisse (talk) 15:41, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
"Thousands of edits" = 1,294, and did not edit for more than a year until these edits.
Also, would you protest Purim or Christmas or Diwali?
And it's not religious propaganda. 🚂ThatTrainGuy1945 Peep peep! 15:52, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • An invitation to write about a subject does not mean it is propaganda. Islam is an undercovered area on the English Wikipedia, and this editathon was coordinated across multiple Wikimedia projects by Wikimedia chapters and editors around the world to combat systemic bias. This is no more propaganda than WikiProject Women in Red or any other editathon.   Chris Woodrich (talk) 16:01, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Improvement

edit

Hi. The WP says, substantial improvements to existing articles are not being accepted on English Wikipedia! May I ask why is it? Thank you! M. Billoo 12:44, 15 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Jury process

Scoring

edit
  • I'm sorry, but can the jury justify some of these marks? I'm looking at these, and it seems like Tesleemah not only zero-rated basically everything I submitted, but did so in several cases after other judges had already awarded points, thereby negating points that were already awarded. If the reason is that they are not related to Ramadhan, next year don't include "topics directly related to ... Islamic culture, or related figures, places, or traditions". Muslim pop lit is still Muslim culture.  Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:05, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Crisco 1492 The scoring metrics has been reviewed. I just confirmed now that Islamic cultural history are also part of the scoring point. Apologies for the oversight from my end. Be rest assured the jury system is also a unified work as against individual. Each point will still be reviewed collectively before final decision. Thank you for your contribution. Tesleemah (talk) 04:54, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for pointing out. We discussed internally and Tesleemah already changed some score. However, before we publish the final result we will review once again. Warm Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 07:27, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
