Infobox in career statistics
editThe infobox at the top of ‘career statistics’ needs to be changed. If it has to remain an infobox, a template should probably be created. Using the ‘infobox’ class like this causes the table to display poorly on mobile (at least in my case). The width of one column is not consistent across all rows. I also tried explicitly setting the width, but it didn’t work. – JamesAndersoon (talk) 16:06, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

- One thing for sure. Never ever add that last red total row. We would never total singles and doubles stats together and I'm always having to remove those rows. Fyunck(click) (talk) 23:04, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
- I agree, but that’s still the least critical issue. The real problem is how it renders on mobile, and that needs to be addressed. It would also make sense to build a template (like we discussed for performance timelines), but I’m not sure why no one is taking ownership of that. JamesAndersoon (talk) 10:56, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
- I'm not sure we need a template but it certainly needs to work way better in mobile. The columns must align and that needs to be addressed. There are several different versions of these charts, so maybe one works better than the rest? Fyunck(click) (talk) 18:31, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
- I’m not aware of multiple versions—I just know it doesn’t work on mobile, and that needs to be fixed already. It’s pointless to spend ages dealing with a single small table. If other elements have templates, why shouldn’t this have one as well? It would make things much easier for everyone, just like the player infobox template does. I don’t see alignment issues there (at least not in my case). JamesAndersoon (talk) 08:03, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah there are three or four different incarnations. We didn't used to have these tables... they just sort of appeared one day like a lot of tables do. I saw them and thought "I guess they could be useful" and moved on, not realizing they didn't align on a cellphone. I rarely use a phone for wikipedia so I never noticed. But these are bad on a phone and need to be fixed. Fyunck(click) (talk) 21:43, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- As just a table it works well:

- @JamesAndersoon and Fyunck(click): I made modifications to the above infobox so it displays properly in mobile. The change, if accepted, could be applied to the current infoboxes. 8rz (talk) 02:07, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- I moved Olympics to proper location. Will this display on the right side like an infobox or could we create an infobox with this table inside? I certainly did not like the way the infobox was originally displaying on mobile at all so this would be a marked improvement. But will it work the same? The thing about infoboxes is they right justify and you can have text and a table of contents on the left sharing the same vertical space. Usually with a table justified to the right we would only have a heap of blank white space on the left. That might look equally weird so we'd need an example of aesthetics with a sandbox page. I asked at the infobox help page but no one seemed interested. Fyunck(click) (talk) 08:16, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Fyunck(click), the table invokes the infobox "class"
{| class="infobox vcard vevent", so it definitely behaves like an infobox. Plus, it is easier to edit as a table instead of as a template with parameters and whatnot. - You would have had a better chance for a reply on WP:VPT (high-traffic page). 8rz (talk) 08:25, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- Fyi, you can use style=float:left or right to float any element left or right. Or with div tags. 8rz (talk) 08:44, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- I guess I misread your post... I thought you fixed the second rendition instead of the original. So the following version works fine on phones?

- Rowspan was the cause of the skewed up version on mobile. By converting "singles" and "doubles" from row- to colspan resolves the issue. The original now displays the same on both desktop as well as mobile. 8rz (talk) 08:49, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- On my iphone 14 they both still look a bit wonky. Columns do not align. They may be better but not correct like the table version looks. Maybe androids handle it differently? Fyunck(click) (talk) 08:55, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- Send me screenshots via imgur, so I can take a closer look. 8rz (talk) 09:04, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Fyunck(click):, in your preferences->Testing and development->Mobile sidebar preview show page in mobile view while browsing the desktop site (Vector skin only), you can enable a custom gadget that will display both desktop and mobile versions (phone with the mobile display in bottom right) simultaneously to check for errors and inconsistencies. 8rz (talk) 15:32, 16 May 2026 (UTC)

- @8rz I still have the issue on mobile. It’s obvious that the infobox handles columns differently from a regular table. What still confuses me, though, is how the main infobox for tennis players (Infobox Tennis Biography) keeps the same width for all field labels? That made me think we could maybe do something similar here as well. JamesAndersoon (talk) 11:35, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- The problem is hardcoded in wikipedia's commons itself, see Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Tables_skewed_with_infobox_class (WP:VPT, for short). Converting the infoboxes tables in the 220 pages (ending in "career statistics") to an infobox would resolve the issue. 8rz (talk) 18:29, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
So tell me again why this edit in my sandbox won't work? It seems to look good on my iphone. Fyunck(click) (talk) 22:11, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- I didn't say it wouldn't work. Just a normal right-aligned table. 8rz (talk) 22:56, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
- @JamesAndersoon: We don't need any special wiki code to be changed or invented, and I think it aligns just fine. It's got to be better than what we have now. Fyunck(click) (talk) 05:35, 16 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Fyunck(click), @JamesAndersoon, if you two agree about replacing the "infobox-class" table with "wikitable nowrap" class, I can have the change implemented on all 220 affected pages. 8rz (talk) 02:05, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
- Is the table rather than infobox ideal... no. Is it 100x better since all the columns align... yes. So I'm all for it. We will still have minor work to do since we don't want any of the notes on recent players. And some slightly older players will have a "WTA Elite" header under WTA Finals. And some infoboxes dont have WTA 500 and WTA 250... they simply combined them into WTA tour (not as good). Fyunck(click) (talk) 06:20, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
- All one needs to do is change the classes, everything else remains untouched. class="infobox vcard vevent nowrap" -> class="wikitable floatright".
- P.S. I am working on an infobox in the background which is going to take a while. Infobox implementation TBD. 8rz (talk) 10:17, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
- I agree! JamesAndersoon (talk) 17:08, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
- @8rz:One thing though... to be of similar sizing as the original it should be class="wikitable floatright nowrap" style=font-size:85%. That would be much closer to what we have now. Fyunck(click) (talk) 18:25, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
- That and style=margin-left:1em to separate the table from the text. 8rz (talk) 21:49, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
- It's been 10 days. Assuming no further comments I will be moving forward with the update. 8rz (talk) 00:19, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
- Update has failed badly on many many articles... need a quick undue or fix. Fyunck(click) (talk) 04:19, 5 June 2026 (UTC)

Deidre Catt
editSo, I was taking a look at the Deidre Catt article and it’s talk page, when I saw that an editor that claimed to be her husband said she had died in 2025.
After that, I went to look for sources that could confirm or deny this information, so that I could include them on the article.
Sadly I didn’t find anything, but I found other sources that were current absent from the article, that could be useful to expand the article. I will leave them here and let anyone who is interested to take a look and use on the article if they are as useful as I think they might be

Category:Wikipedia requested image of tennis people
editSo, I was looking through the “Category:Wikipedia requested image of tennis people” and noticed that there a lot of pages needing images, 124 pages to be exact, and then I wondered if this is due to unavailability of images of those people or that editors are not really interested on solving this issue. Does anyone have a clue to this? How could we reduce those numbers? Haddad Maia fan (talk) 11:07, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
Athens Open (WTA)
editSo, earlier today, the WTA announced the Athens Open, a new WTA 250 tournament set to debut this year. As a result, I created an article about the tournament (intended to cover the event in general, rather than serve as a page for the 2026 edition). If anyone would like to make changes or add new information, feel free to contribute to the article. Haddad Maia fan (talk) 14:08, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
- For reasons of consistency, this article should probably be renamed to WTA Athens Open, but that link already exists and redirects to the Athens Trophy.--Wolbo (talk) 17:43, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
Professional career
editWhen do we consider a tennis player begins to be a professional player?
Is it when the player is too old to play at junior tournaments? Is it when the player decides to not play on junior tournaments anymore? Is it when the player completes on its first professional tournament?
How does it work? Haddad Maia fan (talk) 22:12, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
- Probably a bit subjective, but you can't be a professional player if you never played a professional event. If the only event you ever played was as a junior or in college, you are not a pro. Fyunck(click) (talk) 23:36, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
- I don't know an authoratative answer to this, but it's been my understanding that you're an amateur until you collect prize money. Once you collect prize money, you've become a professional. What was the Maya Joint scenario a couple years ago? —Scottyoak2 (talk) 03:44, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
- It was August 2024, and had to do with NCAA eligibilty: Maya_Joint#College. —Scottyoak2 (talk) 03:46, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
- NCAA is pretty clear on amateur status. Rule 12.1.2 Amateur Status... An individual loses amateur status and thus shall not be eligible for intercollegiate competition in a particular sport if the individual:
- Uses his or her athletics skill for pay in any form in that sport, or accepts a promise of pay.
- Signs a contract or commitment of any kind to play professional athletics.
- Receives a salary, reimbursement of expenses or any other form of financial assistance except as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations.
- Competes on any professional athletics team even if no pay or remuneration for expenses was received.
- Enters into an agreement with an agent
- This is not per 2026 but the general idea should be the same. Fyunck(click) (talk) 06:30, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
- At Wikipedia, I'd recommend that we consider our nomenclature on a player-by-player basis. A tennis player could be considered "professional" once they begin regular participation in non-junior tour events and compete for prize money and ranking points. There isn't a bright-line decision point, as junior and professional participation often overlaps. —Scottyoak2 (talk) 15:12, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
- Yes it does overlap. Juniors often test the waters at pro events. I believe the ITF has strict rules on how many pro tournaments players under 18 can play. It used to be that a player picked up their first "pro" point by winning a match at pro level. At that point they would forever be able to put on their resume that they played professional tennis. I would usually call someone a junior if they still play consistently in juniors while testing the pro circuit. It is surely a blurry line. Fyunck(click) (talk) 17:52, 1 May 2026 (UTC)

Is there a MOS for tennis articles?
editHello, it's been several years since I've created an article for a tennis player. I've started this one: User:Scottyoak2/Julia Adams (tennis) and have a few questions:
- 1. Should I leave all of those redlinks, or unlink them?
- 2. Should the tournament dates be like this: (a) 29 Sep 2025, or (b) Sep 2025 ?
- 3. Is the "date" of a tournament the first day of play? Or the last day of play? i.e., for "29 Sep - 05 Oct 2025", do we use "Sep 2025" or "Oct 2025" ?
- 4. For these weekly tournaments such as ITF W15s in Monastir, do we record them as Monastir 1, Monastir 2, Monastir 3, etc. ?
Thank you for advice. Scottyoak2 (talk) 16:17, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
- We have Wikipedia:WikiProject Tennis/Article guidelines, and of course you can look at how similar articles handle these things. Iffy★Chat -- 18:01, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Red link on when to leave redlinks in an article or unlink them.
- a) for Davis/BJK (Fed) Cup example b) for career finals example.
- First day of main draw play, after the conclusion of qualification round matches. Use my format sans the date.
- Stick with the main event's name sans the sponsorship name <event name>, <city or country it was held in> in the "Tournament" column example1, example2. 8rz (talk) 21:19, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
Just a heads up for everyone – Wikipedia changed image size options again
editThis is just a curtesy information post. Background: Many years ago Wikipedia default image size was 200 pixels. It was then changed to 220 pixels, where it remained for many years, and there are still several wiki guidelines that say 200 and 220 pixels are the preferred size especially for infoboxes. A year or so ago default size was bumped to 250 pixels and infoboxes ballooned in size. The image_size parameter was usually used to override the huge size by saying 200px or 220px. So problem solved. But Wikipedia also wanted us to go away from a static size like pixels to a proportional size using the upright parameter. That way an image could size itself depending on screen size. But the upright (or in infoboxes "image_upright) command was based off the default image size. Upright=.9 turned the default 220px into 200px. However when default changed to 250 then upright=.9 only correlated to 225px so we could adjust again by using upright=.8 which correlates to 200px. And you can also change your own preferences here at Wikipedia by going to the top of the page and clicking preferences/appearance/files/thumbnail size and choosing 120,150,180,200,220,250,300, or 400, for your maximum image size. Many at Wikipedia chose 220 as the max.
Fast forward to this week. Wikipedia has eliminated all those eight choices of thumbnail sizes. They now have only three sizes (even though it currently still says eight sizes).... 180,250, and 400. Small, medium, and large. If you choose 220 or lower it will now render at 180 pixels. If you choose 250 it will render as 250 pixels. If you choose 300 or 400 it will render at 400 pixels. If anyone has suddenly noticed strange new sizes when viewing articles this is probably the reason why. It sure had me scratching my head. I wanted us all at Tennis Project to be aware of these changes. There is an opt-out feature but you have to change some coding on your personal css Wiki page at Special:MyPage/common.css. That code is explained at phab:T424909 under "How do I opt out". You must replace 120px for the size you want as a max size (in my case 220px). It worked fine for me. I know some like very small stamp-sized images and some like balloons. I have no idea why Wikipedia didn't send out a single special announcement since it could affect so many editors. Just an FYI for all of us. Fyunck(click) (talk) 21:12, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
- This was covered in last week's tech news: Tech/News/2026/19. Similar issue was raised at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Tech News: 2026-19. 8rz (talk) 21:56, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah, but so few actually get and wade through the tech news, plus it gives no background on how image size has changed over the last decade. I just wanted everyone to know. Thanks for the link. Fyunck(click) (talk) 22:33, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
Wimbledon eChamps
editSo, last year I created the article on the Wimbledon eChamps, wich is an annual international tennis esports tournament.
As I am not very familiar with esports coverage and sources, I used what I could find, but I know it is not the best it could be.
So I thought it would be best to reach you here and ask if anyone is up to help me with that
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
I already reached out to the people at the Video Games WikiProject, since this is also a topic that concerns them, but I haven’t received any response from that side. So, I decided to come here to see if anyone might be able to help. Haddad Maia fan (talk) 16:12, 14 May 2026 (UTC)

Split 3 pages
editI've been creating yearly in tennis pages and noticed the 1929, 30 and 31 in tennis pages are already taken up with different content than similar pages of that name. Proposing to split:
- 1929 in tennis -> 1929 Men's Tennis Circuit and 1929 Women's Tennis Circuit
- 1930 in tennis -> 1930 Men's Tennis Circuit and 1930 Women's Tennis Circuit
- 1931 in tennis -> 1931 Men's Tennis Circuit and 1931 Women's Tennis Circuit
to make room (usurp) for the addition of the circuit summary by listing only the slam winners (example). 8rz (talk) 17:12, 15 May 2026 (UTC)

The article Almaty Cup has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Poorly sourced article about a defunct, small-prize tennis tournament. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate. A Google search found only hits similar to what we have. Fails the relevant notability guidelines. Lacks significant coverage.

The article Green World ATP Challenger has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unreferenced for 15 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate. Poorly sourced stub about a defunct tennis tournament that ran only for two years.

The article Maceió Open has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unreferenced for 18 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate. Stub about a low-stakes tennis tournament that lasted one week and never came back.

Proposal to merge Template:years in tennis with YYYY in tennis navs
editProposal to merge {{years in tennis}} with the YYYY in tennis nav boxes {{2026 in tennis}}, for example, for years 1877–2026 (list of all yearly templates) to fall in line with related-navs like {{ATP Masters 1000 tournaments}} and {{WTA 1000 tournaments}} for the (Masters) 1000 category, where there existed separate navs for the years and list of events but were later merged for simplicity and succinctness. 8rz (talk) 14:33, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
- Can you perhaps create a sandbox example so we can see how such a merged template would look like? --Wolbo (talk) 13:56, 25 May 2026 (UTC)

The 2000 ATP Tour World Championships dates in the lead don't match those in the infobox and those here on the ATP Tour website. The ones on the ATP Tour website are probably taken from the singles' event and are wrong. --Moscow Connection (talk) 09:22, 4 June 2026 (UTC)
- The only other source I could find that lists a date, which matches the one in the infobox is the men's doubles one on ITF. 8rz (talk) 13:23, 4 June 2026 (UTC)
- ITF? That might explain why ATP doesn't list them at https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/results-archive?year=2000. (Probably just a glitch, though. Or the list is badly done and incomplete.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 08:32, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
- I went to change the dates accordingly, and you'd already changed them . Thank you! --Moscow Connection (talk) 08:42, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for pointing the discrepancy out. 8rz (talk) 12:19, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
Tímea Babos retirement
editI have noticed that several editors are treating Tímea Babos as if she had announced her retirement following the 2026 tournaments in Australia, making corresponding edits to pages ranging from the 2026 WTA Tour article to her biography and tournaments where she is the defending champion. However, based on the information I have been able to find, this does not appear to be accurate.
Babos stated that she intends to take a break from professional tennis in order to spend more time with her family and friends. She also expressed a desire to return to the tour in the future and mentioned her goal of competing at the 2028 Summer Olympics. Therefore, she has not announced her retirement from professional tennis; rather, she has indicated that she is taking a temporary hiatus from the sport.
I think we should adress this issue as to not put false information on that many articles Haddad Maia fan (talk) 11:33, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
Request
editWanted to ask if somebody could do something with Catherine Leduc (tennis).
The situation is that Catherine Leduc (musician) crossed over from "musician notable only as member of band" to "musician with standalone solo notability" this week — but since there were over 30 redlinks waiting for the tennis player, thus making it very clear that she's notable too, I wasn't about to simply commandeer the plain title for the musician. So I repointed all of the redlinks to the tennis-disambiguated version, created the musician at a disambiguated title, and made a dab page at the plain title.
However, since dab pages with only one bluelink are vulnerable to deletion, and I obviously don't want a hash to be made of everything by having the musician moved overtop of the dab page so long as the tennis player has a credible notability claim, I wanted to ask if somebody with more expertise in writing and sourcing tennis bios than I've got can either get at least a rudimentary article about the tennis player in place, or figure out a viable target for an {{R with possibilities}} redirect, so that her link doesn't stay red. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 14:21, 14 June 2026 (UTC)
- Done! I have created the article. Now anyone can change it the way they feel like it should be done Haddad Maia fan (talk) 16:00, 14 June 2026 (UTC)
- I just want to say that I have went ahead and WP:PROD the tennis article. Leduc the tennis player, though she has a significant number of wikilinks due to her participation in many Canadian tennis tournaments, seemingly only participated in these tournaments as a wildcard due to being a local player. She doesn't have any significant success on the pro tennis tour and I couldn't find any WP:SIGCOV about her. She also hasn't played a professional match since 2020 so she is seemingly retired and news is unlikely to come out now. There aren't any good redirect targets out there so it might be more appropriate in my opinion to have the musician's article at Catherine Leduc and not have a disambiguation page and either keep the redlinks to Catherine Leduc (tennis) or just unlink them.
