They actually aren't. We should probably change how we count these, Catfurball, now that we know about the "probably unreferenced" group that is untagged. If you look at the new chart on the main page, you can see from a month ago that while the unreferenced amount has gone up by 1,000, the probably unreferenced group has gone down by 5,000. So massive progress is still being made, it's just that some of the latter are being tagged and thus being added into the former, even while the total amount is going down a whole bunch. Counting totals

edit

I would like to propose that under Progress, we include three numbers: 1) the total number of articles tagged as unreferenced (including BLPs and lists) as we do now; 2) the total number of articles that are "probably" unreferenced (including lists); and 3) the total of those two numbers. By tracking all 3 instead of just 1, it eases some of the anxiety around the number in category 1 going up, while providing an overall view of actual progress. @SunloungerFrog @ARandomName123 Cielquiparle (talk) 17:04, 6 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Makes sense to me. SilverserenC 17:08, 6 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I agree. Because really the grand total should only go down now provided we keep it refreshed, and I think ARandomName123's refreshing script does a great job in that regard. Certainly the graph's trajectory is very encouraging. I will have a think about automatically gathering those numbers. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 17:27, 6 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Update

edit

The Progress box now reports, below the graph, these three numbers, the change with respect to the day before, and a prediction about when the backlog might disappear. The progress report will automatically update once a day. I'd like to thank ARandomName123 for sterling help behind the scenes to ensure that the chunk of "probably unreferenced articles" is refreshed every day. Any questions, give me a shout. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 09:18, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks @SunloungerFrog and @ARandomName123. Looks great. Liking the prediction of when the backlog might finally be eliminated and that it is all automated. Cielquiparle (talk) 05:36, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

False positives

edit

Starting a list of false positives from the "Probably unreferenced" set:

Pinging @ARandomName123 Cielquiparle (talk) 19:32, 25 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Cielquiparle: Thanks for listing those. Dealt with the decade articles by adding {{Events by year for decade}} to the filter. The 2024 Indian election article is now filtered through #section-h, and the FIFA one is filtered through {{2006 FIFA World Cup qualification - CAF Group 1}} (this isn't the ideal solution but it seems each one has a different template). ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:55, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @ARandomName123! Listing a couple more:
Cielquiparle (talk) 05:32, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, {{excerpt}} added for Libya, unrf added (never seen that before!), and added {{2015 Canadian federal election/ ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 05:58, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
And more:
Cielquiparle (talk) 12:48, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Added {{2003 FIFA Women's World Cup group tables}} for the first (probably only works for this specific article, as there's many templates on that page). Added {{ISO 639-3 footer}} for the ISO page. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 22:25, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@ARandomName123 @SunloungerFrog How did we end up *adding* 145 "probably unreferenced" articles to unref8? Cielquiparle (talk) 11:25, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Cielquiparle, in an effort to keep abreast of any new "probably unreferenced" articles - for example, if an editor goes on a spree removing unreliable sources from articles but subsequently fails to tag the articles if they happen to end up unreferenced - @ARandomName123's bot now scans all articles that were last edited by a non-bot the day before yesterday, in addition to the existing task of refreshing those already in the "probably unreferenced" blob. We thought that this gradual approach was better than an infrequent scan across all mainspace articles, which would almost certainly have the undesirable effect of a big disheartening spike in "probably unreferenced" articles. The conversation ARandomName123 and I had about this is here: User talk:ARandomName123 § URA scripts, continuously check for probably unref articles. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 11:55, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
(And actually it was only 24 additional articles as you can see from the diff - the other 121 articles were already in the "probably unreferenced" blob). Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 11:59, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Got it. Thanks @SunloungerFrog for the update and link. Cielquiparle (talk) 18:09, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

More false positives:

Cielquiparle (talk) 15:11, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Added {{NRHP date for lists}} for the two NRHP ones, added {{2025 Canadian federal election/Nepean}} for Carney, and added {{Israel populations}} for Manshiyet Zadba. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 21:35, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
More false positives:

Cielquiparle (talk) 05:44, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Added {{Comparison of SHA functions}}. Added {{Infobox Italian comune}}. I'm not too sure about the last one, since it doesn't directly link to the source, and it seems to be the same URL regardless of what place it is. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 05:56, 5 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also added {{NRHP row}} and {{NRHP header}} for the NRHP ones. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 06:00, 5 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Another false positive:
Cielquiparle (talk) 10:57, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Added {{albumchart}} for On Air. Added {{Infobox college track and field team}} as well, though I'm not sure if there's any false negatives ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 05:06, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@ARandomName123 When you get a chance, could we filter out Main Page (sitting at unref6)? Cielquiparle (talk) 19:42, 3 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah yea that shouldn't be there. Added to the filter. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 00:24, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

False positive:

Cielquiparle (talk) 04:59, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Added {{Jetten cabinet table}}. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 08:39, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just noticed that unref8 is turning up a couple of soft redirects as "probably unreferenced", so maybe we could filter those out. Examples: Rosearik Rikki Simons and John Bachtell. Cielquiparle (talk) 06:06, 25 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Added {{Soft redirect}} ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 06:19, 25 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Admiralteysky Municipal Okrug seems to be a false positive. Seems to be {{ru-census2002}} and {{ru-census2010}} generating the refs here. Presumably the same would go for {{Ru-census2021}}. Cakelot1 talk 16:45, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
More false positives:
Cakelot1 talk 18:57, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, added the census templates and infobox templates. The village and parish templates ({{Infobox settlement/Wikidata}} and {{Infobox Greek Dimos}}) were just added yesterday, so should now be out already. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:31, 6 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
There's also Australian National Road Cycling Championships, but I'm a bit confused about this pages structure in general. Cakelot1 talk 22:19, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looks like its transcluding multiple pages with {{#section:}}. Should be filtered out on the next run. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 05:22, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ferapontovo looks to be a false positive due to {{RKN base}} Cakelot1 talk 16:39, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wonder whether we should add anything in Category:Attribution templates to the false positive list? Based on various sightings of {{SmithDGRBM}} (e.g. Echecratides) and {{McS}} (e.g. August Kayser), and on the basis that anything that says "this article has content from ABC" generally implies a de facto source of ABC. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 13:43, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

HLA-Cw7 and HLA-Cw4 are false positive, with the refs (and seemingly all the content) generated by {{SerotypeC normall}} Cakelot1 talk 19:35, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, added. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:43, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
The non redirect versions of those templates are already included in the filter ({{DGRBM}} and {{PD-McClintock-and-Strong}}), and I believe I included Category:Attribution templates when I first made the list of templates. However, the categories do not contain the redirects, hence why the two examples you provided are not detected. I have since added those two to the list. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:33, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
User:ARandomName123/templatelist contains most of the templates that are being filtered for (a couple are hardcoded). It is not case sensitive. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:49, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Highway 77 (Israel) and Highway 42 (Israel) due to {{ISRinttop}} Cakelot1 talk 11:20, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Added, thanks. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 02:29, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
1838 in paleontology, 1894 in paleontology, 1865 in paleontology, etc. that use {{Year in paleontology header}} Cakelot1 talk 17:00, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also, all the templates in Category:Big 12 Conference men's basketball standings templates (until 2019–20) include refs that are causing quite a lot of false positives (e.g. 2007–08 Baylor Bears basketball team, 2009–10 Big 12 Conference men's basketball season, 2007–08 Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball team) Cakelot1 talk 21:44, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Added Year in paleontology header, and the string "Big 12 men's basketball standings" ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 01:30, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Cakelot1: Also, please give me a ping once you finish going through everything in a page. Pinging @Lollipoplollipoplollipop as well, though I noticed you already do that on the corresponding talk pages. Thanks! ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:23, 18 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@ARandomName123, I've pretty much been through User:ARandomName123/unref1, User:ARandomName123/unref2, User:ARandomName123/unref3 (up to the point where it looked like Jacob Nielsen, Count of Halland where it looked like Lollipoplollipoplollipop had got up to coming the other way). Since then Lollipoplollipoplollipop also seems to have gone through and tagged some of those that I was unsure about, so I'm pretty sure those three should be pretty much complete. Cakelot1 talk 12:52, 18 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yea I went through backwards from unref8 and have now checked all the non-list articles. I've left a lot of the lists unchecked in unref4 and unref5. Going through them now. Very difficult to determine what to do with some lists that are just a few blue links (and aren't obviously a set index article or list of lists). //Lollipoplollipoplollipop::talk 14:20, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good, thanks you two for doing the tagging. I will make my way through the false positives. As for the lists, we should probably get some clarification on the sourcing requirements (ie. if the linked article supports it, is that enough?) at WP:V or someplace similar in the future. Marathon update for March 2026

edit

While #TeamBacklogDrive is busy reviewing articles through 7 April, let's take a moment to look at the Top 22 finishers in the marathon for March 2026.

(The marathon runs year-round and you can track the ongoing leaderboard here. Points are counted when {{unreferenced}} tags are removed. So whether you are relatively new or an experienced backlog drive participant who just wants to keep on going with adding citations, you can enjoy the camaraderie and a bit of competition in April, May, June, July...until the next backlog drive in August.)

In March 2026, we have a total of 22 editors with 100+ points, 13 of whom had 200+ points, which is incredible. Another 32 editors had between 31–99 points, or between 1–3 points a day.

What are the differences with the (preliminary) leaderboard for the March 2026 backlog drive? Unsurprisingly, first place on both leaderboards is @JTtheOG, towering in 1000+ territory. @Flurrious looks to be in second place on both leaderboards, looking at the References column only. The surprise is finding @Bearian in 3rd place on the marathon leaderboard in March, likely from his work in reviewing mistagged articles. @Davidindia is in 4th with a staggering 480 points.

(Adding citations to reliable sources is highly appreciated but you can also accumulate points in the marathon by correcting mistagged articles, which is important work because you will also uncover vandalism in the edit histories, encounter new editors who need help and guidance, and often find dodgy citations that need to be fixed...in addition to simply replacing tags for editors who added a valid citation but forgot to remove the tag.)

Speaking of which: Comparing leaderboards suggests that @Omegarightarrow in 5th place with an impressive 424 points may have forgotten to replace tags on ~39 articles, and that @Sleepytimecat in 7th place at 364 points may have forgotten on ~32 occasions. (Understandable considering the speed at which you were going, which is amazing.)

A special shout out to @JoeNMLC in 6th place in the March 2026 marathon with 382 points. JoeNMLC – who incidentally is currently 3rd in the year-to-date rankings – has been one of the many editors who persevered in chipping away at the gargantuan category "Articles lacking sources from December 2009" for a very long time. Well done and congratulations to you and everyone who contributed to this monumental achievement.

Keep going everyone and happy referencing! Cielquiparle (talk) 06:10, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

It says the tally should now be up to date but I've noticed my last 3 edits haven't been counted. (Doesn't change much for me but I thought I'd flag it just in case.) MmeMaigret (talk) 07:38, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Nevermind, I noticed you got started on them already. If you need any assistance though, just let me know! ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 22:20, 15 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@DreamRimmer @ARandomName123 Have finally completed Leaderboard adjustments and essentially ready to send Barnstars. Please do a quick visual scan of the leaderboard rankings for any errors – we ended up manually re-adjusting the rankings and totals in several successive waves (though I think it's correct now). (Will de-brief everyone later about key findings from the re-review of the Reviews.) Cielquiparle (talk) 05:45, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Cielquiparle: Looks good to me, thanks for finishing up those adjustments! ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 08:27, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Cite Unseen

edit

Highly recommend installing the Cite Unseen tool. There is a short description on Wikipedia which points you to detailed Cite Unseen page on Meta-Wiki with instructions on how to enable it. It's worth reading that Meta-Wiki page carefully to understand how the tool is categorizing sources (using WP:RSPS, WP:NPRSG, WikiProject-specific reliable sources guides, as well as other language Wikipedias' perennial sources guides, etc.), and to remember that it's mostly a prompt to consider potential concerns with a source: "You should never justify removing or adding a source solely because of information that Cite Unseen provides; you need to do your own homework as well." I’ve installed it myself but prefer just the reliability and ‘really big issues’ to be shown. With everything it clogs up my ref section. But it is a good help for reliability. Chorchapu (talk | edits) 16:35, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Marathon update for May 2026

edit

The world is different now that most unreferenced articles and lists have been tagged. Thanks to @Cakelot1, @Lollipoplollipoplollipop, and others for your heroic work on this front. And to those who have hung in there during the deluge, massive hats off to you too.

Here is a belated leaderboard with the Top 11 finishers in May 2026. @Silver seren head and shoulders above the rest at 451 points, but @WindBorneListener similarly impressive at 219. Strong performances from @JoeNMLC, @Bearian (in first place for year to date), and @MediaKyle, all over 100 points.

Rank User Total articles in May 2026
1 Silver seren 451
2 WindBorneListener 219
3 JoeNMLC 188
4 Bearian 139
5 MediaKyle 101

7 Gnisacc 39

If you're wondering what this is all about...you can track monthly progress on the 2026 leaderboard here. Add citations to unreferenced articles, and remember to remove the tag. By participating, you are part of a massive effort to improve the reliability of information and quality of articles on Wikipedia. Cielquiparle (talk) 04:45, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Greetings, Within all the unreferenced articles, a tool that helps me find articles of interest is the "Topic filter". First group that I like is "Education", and within those articles listed, I successively browser search "University" then College, School, Institute. The other topic is "Sports", and browser search "Football" (soccer) articles. Cheers and happy Referencing, JoeNMLC (talk) 14:20, 18 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@JoeNMLC Is "Topic filter" a tool or extension or browser technique? Cielquiparle (talk) 00:20, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
