Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Information icon Hello, Zoooom Marketing. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation for any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

See the FAQ for article subjects for more information.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Theroadislong (talk) 06:59, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Your account has been indefinitely blocked from editing because it has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia. Also, your username gives the impression that the account represents a business, organisation, group, website, or role, which is against the username policy.

If you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization, you may request unblock and a username change. In your reasons, you must follow all these steps:

  1. Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement; and
  2. Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked; and
  3. Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked; and
  4. Provide a new username.

To do this, insert the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. If you are having trouble, you may want to try using the unblock wizard.

Before requesting a new username, check if it is still available. If the search says "There is no global account for [username]", the username is free to use.

Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the edit.

I send a note for resolution explaining that I requested a change in the name for clarity. Sorry for the inconvenience. Zoooom Marketing (talk) 08:28, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

This user is asking to be unblocked to request a change in username.

Requested username:

Request reason:
The following request was written through the unblock wizard.
Can you explain, in your own words, why your edits were promotional?

Reason for Appeal: I understand that my previous username "Zoooom Marketing" violated Wikipedia's username policy by representing a role/organization rather than an individual human, and that trying to create a draft about my own company triggered promotional red flags.

I am a co-founder of Zoooom, and I requested to change the name to identify myself and I formally disclose my Conflict of Interest (COI). My goal was simply to draft a factually accurate, completely neutral history of the company in my sandbox based entirely on verified public press records.

If unblocked and renamed to "ChristopheG_Tech", I promise to keep the draft strictly in my sandbox and submit it exclusively through the independent "Articles for Creation" (AfC) review process so neutral community editors can judge its worthiness. I will not make promotional edits or attempt to move it to the live encyclopedia myself.
What is your relationship with the subjects you have been editing about?
Co founder
If you are unblocked, what topic areas will you edit in?
I will focus on keeping the Zoooom page updated on how the company is evolving
Is there anything else that may be helpful to your unblock request?
I honest and just want to make sure the company can be on wiki an important source of information

If you decline the unblock request, replace this template with the following, replacing {{subst:Decline reason here}} with any specific rationale. If you do not edit the text after "decline=", a default reason why the request was declined will be inserted.

Wikipedia has ZERO interest in marketing your company, you can use social media and linkedin.com for that. Theroadislong (talk) 08:32, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Please see WP:YESPROMO and WP:BOSS. Wikipedia is not merely a source of information. It has criteria for inclusion, what we call notability, such as a notable company. Most companies on Earth do not meet that definition, just as most humans do not meet the notable person definition. Wikipedia is not a place for a company to tell about itself, what it views as its history, and its offerings. Most company representatives fail at efforts to write about their companies, especially as new users without broader Wikipedia experience. Are you one of the very rare people who can succeed where most(probably 95%) fail? Possibly, but the odds are against it. Is there anything else you want to edit about? 331dot (talk) 08:58, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you both for the necessary reality check. I understand and respect your skepticism. I realize now that my initial username and approach signaled "marketing brochure," which is exactly what Wikipedia is not. I hope you noticed my transparency and honesty with the first name!
To answer your question directly: Yes, I want to prove I can be part of that rare percentage that respects the rules. I am not looking to use Wikipedia for promotion or SEO. I am here as an individual who wants to learn how to contribute neutrally.
Regarding Zoooom: I will not attempt to move anything to the live encyclopedia myself. If permitted, I would like to keep a strictly factual draft in my sandbox to see if it can ever meet the strict threshold of WP:ORG through independent review via Articles for Creation (AfC). If a neutral reviewer says it doesn't meet the bar, I will accept that decision without argument.
Beyond that, I have a deep personal background in software development and work for major companies around the world. If unblocked, I would gladly use my spare time to help improve articles in those subject areas, fix broken citations, or copyedit existing drafts entirely unrelated to my business.
I am happy to comply with any username change and strict COI protocols required to show good faith. Thank you! Zoooom Marketing (talk) 09:11, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I did not say that 95% of people don't respect the rules. I said that 95% fail at attempts to write about their companies- most not because they don't attempt to follow the rules, but because their companies are not actually notable and they are too close to their companies to be able to see it- especially marketing personnel. Writing for marketing is very different than writing for Wikipedia. You can do your best to follow the rules in a failed effort.
Drafts/articles do not merely summarize facts- this is a common misunderstanding of company representatives. To establish notability requires what is termed "significant coverage" in independent reliable sources. "Significant coverage" is critical analysis and commentary as to what others view as important/significant/influential about the topic, not what it views as its own importance. Most companies don't have such coverage.
What are three(only three, please) independent reliable sources that provide significant coverage of your company? These should not be
    • press releases
    • staff interviews
    • materials from the company(like its website)
    • the mere reporting of routine business activities(like commencing operations, acquiring competitors, releasing a product
    • brief mentions
If you don't have that, there is little point in permitting you to contribute about your company even indirectly. 331dot (talk) 11:38, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Have you used AI to generate any of your comments here? While I understand that many businesses use AI as a matter of courses, Wikipedia strictly prohibits the use of LLMs to generate comments. voorts (talk/contributions) 20:56, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
