June 2013
Thank you ScottyOak2, I really appreciate your time and efforts. I have read through your suggestions and even though everything in the article is fact and not fabrication clearly the references I have cited are not acceptable to wikipedia. However I did look at your suggestions and I find this under the heading NOTABILITY (MUSIC) CRITERIA FOR COMPOSERS & LYRICISTS 4. "Has written a composition which has won (or in some cases been given a second or other place) in a major music competition not established expressly for newcomers". Then the subject and his brother both fall into this and if nothing else perhaps the page could include this?
The Bartlett brothers wrote SONG OF PEACE which was selected for the BBC CHOIRBOY OF THE YEAR (JAMES EAGER) to perform and record on behalf of the BBC in 2002 and was released as a CD single (All proceeds went to the Salvation Army Charity). The CD was aired on CLASSIC FM ( most notable) and BBC RADIO 3 along with the BBC CONCERT ORCHESTRA & THE BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF WALES. Surely this BBC sponsored competition would fall into the above category?
If the subject is not notable for this composition then perhaps the song itself is and a page entitled SONG OF PEACE should appear?

We need to understand why did you erase the Personal Life section of Darren Ritchie's profile? He recently got married with journalist Denny Alfonso and our colleagues at Broadway World, Yahoo and Associated Press confirmed the info. We also attached the pictures of the wedding and have an authorization from Darren and his wife Denny to post the information at wikipedia. We are going to upload the content again, and also will open an investigation internally to understand why this profile has been your target. Thanks (Originally posted by User:Broadway News on my user page.)Scottyoak2 (talk) 07:00, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
- The information in the Personal Life section of Darren Ritchie (actor) was unsourced and it contained contentious information about another person, who is not the subject of the article. See WP:BLPREMOVE. The photo was improperly posted and did not appear at all. See WP:PICTURES. An authorization from the subject of the article is not a reliable, independent, third-party source. See WP:SOURCE. The subject of the article is unknown to me, and is not my "target" in any way. Scottyoak2 (talk) 07:26, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

interlinking on Wikipedia

hi all, thanks for the welcome and the response. I think I posted a question somewhere (in the community? Or on someones's talk page?) and I might have forgotten to sign it properly, sorry! Anyway, my question was how do I like a term to a Wikipedia article, when it's different from the title of the article I want to link to?
Example: in the "Disney Princess" article I wanted to link "Snow White" to the article about the Disney animated feature, and the article is called something like "Snow White (Disney)". I tried copying the way I saw it was done in other cases, but I must have missed something, as it didn't work. Would appreciate your help in this one! Thanks!Disneyess29 (talk) 13:40, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- It's fine to forget to sign something every so often, as a bot will (usually) come after you and sign it for you.
- You can "pipe" a wikilink so it'll display text that is different from the article title you're linking to. You can read about how to do so here. --I dream of horses If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. @ 14:37, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Disneyess29, the coding for your link would look like this:
[[Snow White (Disney)|Snow White]]As mentioned above, the explanation is here: Help:Link#Wikilinks Scottyoak2 (talk) 16:23, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing citations (and a suggestion)
Thanks for fixing citations! I appreciate your work.
One note: when you remove the "coauthors" parameter, please check to see if the "author" or "last" and "first" parameters already exist. If they do, changing "coauthors" to "author" will result in a citation error (redundant parameters). You can use "author2" instead of "author" when there is already one author listed.
Sample edits that introduced errors are here and here. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:50, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

New page for singer-songwriter John Garrison
Hello, I'm contacting you because your name appears in the list of active participants to the WikiProject Musicians. I would need help to assess the page I'm currently working on before publishing it to Wikipedia. I'm a new contributor and it's my first page. I would need help for categorizing and disambiguation too. Don't worry if my user page is almost empty, I concentrated all my attention to create the new page and will take care of my user page later. You can contact me by email if you prefer. Regarding Lil Cory?
Hey! Would you be able to explain your speedy deletion tagging of Lil Cory. The article states that the artist has composed music for American Dad and has an album on iTunes. While this may or may not fully meet Wikipedia's notability guideline, it seems, in my opinion, to at least constitute a credible claim of significance. (I did originally tag the article under WP:A7, but the author improved it and I removed the tag). TheDragonFire (talk) 04:12, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for your question. A7 requires the application of a two-part test. I do believe that the points in the article are credible, but I don't think they are significant. Scottyoak2 (talk) 04:28, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
Changing 'reflist' to 'references responsive'
I see you are changing the template {{reflist}} in some articles to use the markup <references responsive/>. This does a lovely job of handling the columns issue. But the usual practice here is to do the reverse, change references to reflist since reflist has many other useful features. I think we should get the reflist template changed. This is the recommendation at mw:Contributors/Projects/Columns for references for projects that use reflist. I don't know what all the implications are regarding the current column size designation, but I am going to request this at Template talk:Reflist. StarryGrandma (talk) 16:07, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

- Hello GiantSnowman. My minor WikiGnome edit at Jimmy Kidega was done while performing Random page patrol. The handling of Reflist columns has been undergoing improvement as English Wikipedia incorporates responsiveness changes implemented in the MediaWiki software. (Details here.) You might have interest in the current discussions at Template_talk:Reflist. Not surprisingly, the Reflist documentation is lagging behind the current active version of the template itself. WPCleaner 2.0

Hello Scottyoak2.
I would like to inform you that a new version of WPCleaner is available replacing the old version (v1.43) dating back to almost a year. Unfortunately, going from version 1.43 to 2.0 automatically isn't possible and will require a new installation. It's necessary to install version 2.0 to take advantage of updates and bug fixes. Version 1.43 will have to be uninstalled manually, as there are no more updates for it.
The installation procedure is described at Wikipedia:WPCleaner/Installation.
Note: for usage in Bot mode, I strongly advise to check the modifications to be sure that the tasks run correctly --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 14:23, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Proposed Page Deletion: Subject Does Not Wish To Have Page
Per Wikipedia:Proposed_deletion as a page editor, you are being informed of the proposed deletion of the page.

The article Carol Morgan has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
Reason: Subject does not wish to have page. --JEM1406a (talk) 12:13, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Draft:Running Late (band)
Hey Scottyoak2! Thank you again for helping me get underway with pruning my draft. I removed every potentially suspicious article to my knowledge from the draft, and have only left in newspaper sources. That being said, I've done quite a bit of work since last night that I would love your input on in terms of the subject's notability:
1. I scanned another newspaper clipping that I found, archived it, and cited it within the draft, which confirms the band performing at the Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure" event as the featured artist in both 2017 and 2018.
2. I found old footage of the band performing on the cable television show "Mallets Place TV", which is a product of Time Warner, that aired nationally from NY to numerous markets in Los Angeles. I archived the footage, and cited the feature on the draft page. Im curious to know how this impacts Criteria 12 of musician notability.
3. I discovered that the band was featured twice on The Real Radio Show WRCN 103.9FM. This radio station is an affiliate to Fox news, is licensed by ASCAP, BMI, and Sound Exchange, and broadcasts internationally. Although I cannot find footage of their songs being played on rotation or transcripts detailing their placement, I have found dates as to when their songs were featured, which I genuinely dont know is good enough to cite in the draft. UPDATE: I found a crude audio recording of their feature on The Real Radio Show, which also includes them playing their single "These Days" live on air. I can't find evidence of their second feature on the show, but I've archived the audio and have it linked in the draft. Looking forward to your thoughts on this.
Im looking forward to more communication about all of this, and how these changes impact this subject's notability. Talk soon! Janeallen24 (talk) 00:19, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
Removed deprecated column width from {{Reflist}}
Thanks for this edit. Is the parameter "30em" in {{Reflist|30em}} really deprecated? I understand that {{Reflist|2}} is deprecated but not {{Reflist|30em}}. Or am I missing something? Cheers, --Edcolins (talk) 13:18, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Edcolins. Thank you for your question, which prompted me to revisit some of the perennial discussions concerning column usage in the Reference section of articles. After MediaWiki made responsiveness improvements to the <references /> tag, I thought en-wiki later deprecated both fixed-columns and colwidths in the {{Reflist}} template. I'm wrong. It looks like fixed-columns are deprecated, but colwidths can still be used. —Scottyoak2 (talk) 07:19, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. --Edcolins (talk) 18:07, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
Notability is not the standard for inclusion in embedded lists
You've recently made several edits that remove material from lists embedded in articles citing Wikipedia:Notability (people) and WP:LISTPEOPLE as justification. Notability only applies for the subject of an article; it does not apply to the contents of an article. And WP:LISTPEOPLE only applies to stand-alone lists; WP:LISTBIO is the guideline for embedded lists and it was rewritten a few years to make it clear that notability is not the standard applied for inclusion in embedded lists. ElKevbo (talk) 23:39, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- @ElKevbo:Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I've revisited the applicable policies and guidelines. It appears that WP:LISTBIO stands on WP:SOURCELIST which, for entries in embedded alumni lists, would focus mostly on the need for reliable sources for verifiability. I think I already had an understanding of the current consensus, but perhaps was clouded by the often-used "Notable alumni" section heading. I also had gotten sloppy with the wording in my edit summaries and warning messages. I appreciate that you took the time to pull me back on track. —Scottyoak2 (talk) 02:24, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
- You're welcome! I think that most or all of your removals were still appropriate for other reasons e.g., material was completely unsourced, material was given undue weight. ElKevbo (talk) 08:07, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello Dear Scottyoak2 , I expanded it a bit and made it more respectable. What do you think about it ? I think it's quite close to wikipedia level. and he is from srilanka and he is doing government official notable program and can you help with expand this article Rajuiu (talk) 00:27, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- Rajuiu, The sources referenced in your draft article are not in-depth coverage of your subject, so you need to locate additional independent sources. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject is not sufficient to establish notability. I do not think that the draft is ready to submit for review. My advice is for you to locate 3-4 independent reliable sources that discuss Rt Rana in-depth, then use only those sources to rebuild your draft. —Scottyoak2 (talk) 04:11, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up. Issues within the Steve Sovern article
Hello Scottyoak,
You've just flagged my article Steve Sovern for having multiple issues, including tone and promotional material. I believe the issue with the promotional material was the promotional poster, which I have since removed. Can you let me know some of the issues that you spotted on the page? This page is a Christmas gift for my grandfather, so I would like to fix these issues before I give it to him Christmas Day. I have been working to stay professional and encyclopedic, but I have clearly made some mistakes that I would like to right. Please let me know soon!
Thanks, JHarlanCheese JHarlanCheese (talk) 18:37, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

Tech News: 2025-19
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- The Wikimedia Foundation has shared the latest draft update to their annual plan for next year (July 2025–June 2026). This includes an executive summary (also on Diff), details about the three main goals (Infrastructure, Volunteer Support, and Effectiveness), global trends, and the budget and financial model. Feedback and questions are welcome on the talk page until the end of May.
Updates for editors
- For wikis that have the CampaignEvents extension enabled, two new feature improvements have been released:
- Admins can now choose which namespaces are permitted for Event Registration via Community Configuration (documentation). The default setup is for event registration to be permitted in the Event namespace, but other namespaces (such as the project namespace or WikiProject namespace) can now be added. With this change, communities like WikiProjects can now more easily use Event Registration for their collaborative activities.
- Editors can now transclude the Collaboration List on a wiki page (documentation). The Collaboration List is an automated list of events and WikiProjects on the wikis, accessed via Special:AllEvents (example). Now, the Collaboration List can be added to all sorts of wiki pages, such as: a wiki mainpage, a WikiProject page, an affiliate page, an event page, or even a user page.

Updates for technical contributors
- Developers who use the
momentlibrary in gadgets and user scripts should revise their code to use alternatives like theIntllibrary or the newmediawiki.DateFormatterlibrary. Themomentlibrary has been deprecated and will begin to log messages in the developer console. You can see a global search for current uses, and ask related questions in this Phabricator task. - Developers who maintain a tool that queries the Wikidata term store tables (
wbt_*) need to update their code to connect to a separate database cluster. These tables are being split into a separate database cluster. Tools that query those tables via the wiki replicas must be adapted to connect to the new cluster instead. Documentation and related links are available.
Detailed code updates later this week: MediaWiki
In depth
- The latest Chart Project newsletter is available. It includes updates on preparing to expand the deployment to additional wikis as soon as this week (starting May 6) and scaling up over the following weeks, plus exploring filtering and transforming source data.

Tech News: 2025-20
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- The "Get shortened URL" link on the sidebar now includes a QR code. Wikimedia site users can now use it by scanning or downloading it to quickly share and access shared content from Wikimedia sites, conveniently.
Updates for editors
- The Wikimedia Foundation is working on a system called Edge Uniques, which will enable A/B testing, help protect against distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDoS attacks), and make it easier to understand how many visitors the Wikimedia sites have. This is to help more efficiently build tools which help readers, and make it easier for readers to find what they are looking for. Tech News has previously written about this. The deployment will be gradual. Some might see the Edge Uniques cookie the week of 19 May. You can discuss this on the talk page.
- Starting May 19, 2025, Event organisers in wikis with the CampaignEvents extension enabled can use Event Registration in the project namespace (e.g., Wikipedia namespace, Wikidata namespace). With this change, communities don't need admins to use the feature. However, wikis that don't want this change can remove and add the permitted namespaces at Special:CommunityConfiguration/CampaignEvents.
- The Wikipedia project now has a Wikipedia in Nupe (
w:nup:). This is a language primarily spoken in the North Central region of Nigeria. Speakers of this language are invited to contribute to new Wikipedia.

Updates for technical contributors
- Developers can now access pre-parsed Dutch Wikipedia, amongst others (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese) through the Structured Contents snapshots (beta). The content includes parsed Wikipedia abstracts, descriptions, main images, infoboxes, article sections, and references.
- The
/page/data-parsoidREST API endpoint is no longer in use and will be deprecated. It is scheduled to be turned off on June 7, 2025.

Weekly highlight
- The Editing Team and the Machine Learning Team are working on a new check for newcomers: Peacock check. Using a prediction model, this check will encourage editors to improve the tone of their edits, using artificial intelligence. We invite volunteers to review the first version of the Peacock language model for the following languages: Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, English, and Japanese. Users from these wikis interested in reviewing this model are invited to sign up at MediaWiki.org. The deadline to sign up is on May 23, which will be the start date of the test.
Updates for editors
- From May 20, 2025, oversighters and checkusers will need to have their accounts secured with two-factor authentication (2FA) to be able to use their advanced rights. All users who belong to these two groups and do not have 2FA enabled have been informed. In the future, this requirement may be extended to other users with advanced rights. Learn more.
Multiblocks will begin mass deployment by the end of the month: all non-Wikipedia projects plus Catalan Wikipedia will adopt Multiblocks in the week of May 26, while all other Wikipedias will adopt it in the week of June 2. Please contact the team if you have concerns. Administrators can test the new user interface now on your own wiki by browsing to Special:Block?usecodex=1, and can test the full multiblocks functionality on testwiki. Multiblocks is the feature that makes it possible for administrators to impose different types of blocks on the same user at the same time. See the help page for more information. - Later this week, the Special:SpecialPages listing of almost all special pages will be updated with a new design. This page has been redesigned to improve the user experience in a few ways, including: The ability to search for names and aliases of the special pages, sorting, more visible marking of restricted special pages, and a more mobile-friendly look. The new version can be previewed at Beta Cluster now, and feedback shared in the task.
- The Chart extension is being enabled on more wikis. For a detailed list of when the extension will be enabled on your wiki, please read the deployment timeline.
- Wikifunctions will be deployed on May 27 on five Wiktionaries: Hausa, Igbo, Bengali, Malayalam, and Dhivehi/Maldivian. This is the second batch of deployment planned for the project. After deployment, the projects will be able to call functions from Wikifunctions and integrate them in their pages. A function is something that takes one or more inputs and transforms them into a desired output, such as adding up two numbers, converting miles into metres, calculating how much time has passed since an event, or declining a word into a case. Wikifunctions will allow users to do that through a simple call of a stable and global function, rather than via a local template.
- Later this week, the Wikimedia Foundation will publish a hub for experiments. This is to showcase and get user feedback on product experiments. The experiments help the Wikimedia movement understand new users, how they interact with the internet and how it could affect the Wikimedia movement. Some examples are generated video, the Wikipedia Roblox speedrun game and the Discord bot.
View all 29 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, there was a bug with creating an account using the API, which has now been fixed.
Updates for technical contributors
- Gadgets and user scripts that interact with Special:Block may need to be updated to work with the new manage blocks interface. Please review the developer guide for more information. If you need help or are unable to adapt your script to the new interface, please let the team know on the talk page.
- The
mw.titleobject allows you to get information about a specific wiki page in the Lua programming language. Starting this week, a new property will be added to the object, namedisDisambiguationPage. This property allows you to check if a page is a disambiguation page, without the need to write a custom function.
User script developers can use a new reverse proxy tool to load javascript and css from gitlab.wikimedia.org with mw.loader.load. The tool's author hopes this will enable collaborative development workflows for user scripts including linting, unit tests, code generation, and code review on gitlab.wikimedia.org without a separate copy-and-paste step to publish scripts to a Wikimedia wiki for integration and acceptance testing. See Tool:Gitlab-content on Wikitech for more information.
Detailed code updates later this week: MediaWiki
Meetings and events
- The 12th edition of Wiki Workshop 2025, a forum that brings together researchers that explore all aspects of Wikimedia projects, will be held virtually on 21-22 May. Researchers can register now.
