Authority control tag

edit

Hello Oronsay. I noticed that you added the authority control tag to an article I recently created (David Trexler, a paleontologist from Montana, USA). I never knew if that authority control tag has to be added since the very beginning by the article creator himself, or if the tag has to be added later by somebody else. So...? Should I have added it myself? Kintaro (talk) 03:07, 29 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Kintaro: Thanks for contacting me about this. The authority control tag draws its content from Wikidata. It's good if you do add it to new bios because when the page is linked to its Wikidata item and there are Identifiers on that record, some of them will appear automatically in Wikipedia. When I came across DT's bio, I guessed that I'd be able to find Identifiers for him, including VIAF, which turned out to be the case. Yes, please, do in future... even if nothing appears immediately. Happy editing! Oronsay (talk) 03:21, 29 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Good to know! Thank you and happy editings to you too! Kintaro (talk) 03:26, 29 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Oronsay, The last few months I concerned myself here with creating soft redirect articles of zoologists to wikispecies. I connected 67 of them manually to their Wikidata item. 15 or so may already be linked to Wikidata btw. Kind regards, Mill 1 (talk) 11:34, 29 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I noticed you started connecting. That's great, thanks! Tip: as mentioned the Wikipedia articles point to the wikispecies page. If you are in doubt to which Wikidata item to connect: it is stated on the wikispecies page. Mill 1 (talk) 07:06, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Mill 1: The redirects I'm connecting are not just those you've created - there are still 129 pages not linked in the Category:Redirects to Wikispecies. Sometimes Wikidata already has duplicates, so I check carefully and merge when necessary. It would be greatly appreciated if you make the connections yourself, as you create the new pages. Otherwise, sometimes a bot will create a new QID which doesn't link to the Wikispecies page. Personally, I'm not a fan of these redirect pages as they give the impression that a bio exists on Wikipedia when it does not. And, yes, the links have to be done one by one. Hopefully, when I next revisit more/most of yours will have been done. Oronsay (talk) 07:23, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the feedback, I'll connect them myself. Mill 1 (talk) 07:59, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oronsay: Done. I only have trouble connecting Paul Horner (herpetologist) to Q59134581 since it is already linked to Q138941231. Mill 1 (talk) 13:26, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Mill 1: I've solved Paul Horner by merging the Wikidata items. There is another issue that I don't know how to resolve. Maurits Anne Lieftinck needs to be changed into a redirect to Maurits Lieftinck as that bio already exists and is the one linked on Wikispecies and Wikidata. Oronsay (talk) 13:38, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I will create the redirect. Mill 1 (talk) 16:44, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oronsay: Done.

@Zackmann08: Apologies, and thank you. I had been updating my military nurses' infoboxes to avoid ongoing Watchlist alerts, saw these two and changed the infoboxes without due diligence. Oronsay (talk) 22:16, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I did, however, use an edit summary in both cases Oronsay (talk) 22:18, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ok technically you used edit summaries yes. no edit summary was not valid. What I meant was no edit summary indicating why you were changing the Infobox type. In any case, no biggie. In the future, just double check your edits. Keep up the good work. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:19, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

New Page Patrol Newsletter - May 2026

edit

Hello Oronsay,

New Page Review queue November 2025 - May 2026

Backlog update

At the time of this message, there are 15,282 articles and 32,951 redirects awaiting review.

After the January–February drive the article backlog was reduced to 15,179 articles and the redirect backlog to 19,053 respectively. Great job! However, both queues are growing rapidly and any additional reviews are highly appreciated.

2024 and 2025 NPP Awards

JTtheOG was selected as the NPP reviewer of the year for both 2024 and 2025, for reviewing the most articles amongst all reviewers.

Hey man im josh and MPGuy2824 won the Redirect Ninja Master Award for 2024 and 2025 respectively, for reviewing the most redirects.

Overall in 2024, one Platinum, two Gold, eight Silver, 12 Bronze and 45 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 66 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year. In 2025, one Platinum, ten Silver, 13 Bronze and 38 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 38 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year.

BoyTheKingCanDance, Rosiestep, SunDawn, and Vanderwaalforces were inducted into the NPP Hall of Fame for having two separate years of 2,000+ article reviews.

January–February backlog drive

The experimental two-month long backlog drive concluded with 183 reviewers patrolling over 27,761 articles and 35,309 redirects, earning over 36,836 points. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 6,484.6 points in this drive.

May backlog drive

An article-only backlog drive is currently underway. We are hoping to make a big dent in the backlog. You can read more about it or join at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Backlog drives/May 2026.

PageTriage

An attempt was made to get the New Pages Feed to sort by date marked as reviewed instead of date created. However we had to revert it due to bugs. We may try again in the future. You can subscribe to the Phabricator ticket if you're interested in following along.

Could you have a look at the Heroin Annie and Other Cliff Hardy Stories and The January Zone wiki pages, especially at the reviews section? The pages have been reviewed and my extracts tagged as being excessive. Given I could only find one review for each book I think that 3-4 sentences is reasonable but the pages' reviewer thinks otherwise. Thanks. Perry Middlemiss (talk) 22:39, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Perry Middlemiss: You may have seen that I've added to January. Hopefully, I will be able to find something else to add to Annie (by the way, that's my name) in the next few days. I'm away from home in Hobart at the moment. Oronsay (talk) 07:52, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Annie, thanks for the addition of the review. I must have missed that one. I was rather annoyed about the "excessive quotation" tag added by the reviewer. I've rather calmed down a bit more now. Perry Middlemiss (talk) 12:28, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
