HBC AIV Helperbot 14 removing partially blocked users from AIV

Please see . The bot was repeatedly removing users with a partial block who were vandalizing on pages outside of their partial block. I ended up reporting to WP:ANI instead. Beagall (talk) 18:47, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

Hm, tricky one. I've deployed a change, will monitor and see what difference it makes. Unfortunately, partial blocks are presented to me as if they are full ones, and it's difficult to detect without going into detail on the logs. Mdann52 (talk) 20:14, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
Still happening ] The partial block is on the /30 range and prevents reports for the /64 range. Geraldo Perez (talk) 06:18, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
@Geraldo Perez: hopefully sorted. For info in the future, the bot will only remove items with the {{vandal}} template, so you can bypass the auto-clerking by using other templates and/or subst'ing if appropriate (but I don't know how messy that template is when you do that!) Mdann52 (talk) 06:43, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
Looks like the problem is fixed. Thanks. Geraldo Perez (talk) 17:35, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

HBC AIV helperbot14 is down?

There are a bunch of actioned reports at UAA and AIV that the bot hasn't cleared yet. It last edited 5 hours ago. – DreamRimmer (talk) 11:22, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

I checked the bot logs, and it seems the job was terminated because of a maxlag timeout. – DreamRimmer (talk) 11:42, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
@DreamRimmer restarted. Continuous flag set so this shouldn't happen again. interesting maxlag has only started peaking again in the last few days! Mdann52 (talk) 12:21, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for restarting it. I was planning to use my bot as a backup until yours was back up. If you ever need a co-maintainer for it, I'd be happy to help out. – DreamRimmer (talk) 13:01, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

The bot appears to be down again as of 18:37, 27 October 2024 UTC. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 23:20, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

@K6ka heya - bot isn't down. Server lag is currently coming back as 39182s, so it's backing off every edit automatically as a result (see mw:Manual:Maxlag parameter. I'll bypass this check for now and make sure this is reported. Mdann52 (talk) 05:49, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
I've poked the WMF Ops peeps, the errant replica has been killed, everything is back to working normally. Mdann52 (talk) 06:08, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

RetractionBot on other wikis

Hello, I was speaking with SamWalton9 who informed me that you're now running RetractionBot. I was wondering if you would be willing to run this bot on other wikis, particularly frwiki. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated. I see on the repository on GitHub that most of the work has already been done, though a few changes should still be made (edit comments in other languages, etc.). I could help with the process of creating the template, the categories, the translations and also getting the consensus to get the bot tag (is it even required? The volume of edits should be relatively low).

Thanks in advance, 🐢 Monsieur Tortue (💬) 21:21, 22 March 2025 (UTC)

@Mr Tortue: - morning, yep I'm happy to get multi-lingual support added. If you can either pop a PR into the bot_settings.yml file in the Gitlab folder, or drop me an email with the localised changes that need to be made, I'll get that sorted.
I'm not sure how the frwiki bot process works, so I'll have to read up on that. I'd prefer to have the bot approved just because it avoids issues down the line as this doesn't run in an attended fashion. Mdann52 (talk) 16:10, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
Hey, I've just created the PR here. For the bot tag, you can read fr:Wikipédia:Bot which is the page about bots on frwiki and fr:Wikipédia:Bot/Statut which is where you need to ask the tag. The rules are pretty standard, the bot has to be useful, safe, sufficiently slow so that errors can be quickly spotted and corrected by others and does not overload histories with purely cosmetic modifications. A few edits are required before asking for the tag though.
In any case, dont hesitate to tell me if you need anything.
Have a nice evening, 🐢 Monsieur Tortue (💬) 20:06, 6 April 2025 (UTC)

UAA/Bot has stopped

The bot on Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention/Bot hasn't done anything for over 24 hours. Secretlondon (talk) 19:02, 22 August 2025 (UTC)

@Secretlondon it's correctly done nothing, as someone's disabled it removing blocked users from there. I'll look into why, and who turned it off, shortly. Mdann52 (talk) 19:17, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
or do you mean the bot that logs suspected users on there? That's not one of mine. Mdann52 (talk) 19:19, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
Sorry my mistake. Secretlondon (talk) 19:43, 22 August 2025 (UTC)

RetractionBot: Marking retracted sources failure

RetractionBot's task "Marking retracted sources" failed to run per the configuration specified at Wikipedia:Bot activity monitor/Configurations. Detected only 0 edits in the last 14 days, whereas at least 1 was expected. If/when the issue is fixed, please change the section title (e.g. append " - Fixed") or remove this section completely. When that is done, this notice will be reposted if the bot task is still broken or is re-broken. If your bot is behaving as expected, then you may want to modify the task configuration instead. Or to unsubscribe from bot failure notifications, remove the |notify= parameter from the {{/task}} template. Thanks! – SDZeroBot (talk) 17:20, 20 October 2025 (UTC)

Temporary account IP viewer granted

The temporary account IP viewer logo, composed of the Wikipedia globe with a user and an IP address

Hello, Mdann52. Per your request, your account has been granted temporary-account-viewer rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is only to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:

  • You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
  • Access must not be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).

It is also important to note that the following actions are logged for others to see:

  • When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
  • Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
  • Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with one or more IP addresses (using the CIDR notation format).

Remember, even if a user is violating policy, avoid revealing personal information if possible. Use temporary account usernames rather than disclosing IP addresses directly, or give information such as same network/not same network or similar. If you do not want the user right anymore then please ask me or another administrator and it will be removed for you. You may also voluntarily give up access at any time by visiting Special:Preferences. Happy editing! – robertsky (talk) 14:23, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026

Hello! I noticed you're a bot operator, so I thought you might be interested in a hackathon we're organizing: the Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026, on 13–14 March in Arnhem, Netherlands.

It's a two-day, technically oriented hackathon bringing together Wikimedians from the region. Whether you want to work on bot frameworks, tools, or other technical projects, this could be a great opportunity to collaborate with fellow developers. Registration closes mid-January or when full. Let me know if there are any questions. Hope to see you there! Daanvr (talk) 09:24, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

@Daanvr - Thanks for the heads up! Unfortunately, I've got pre-existing commitments on those dates this time around, but sounds like the sort of thing I would be interested in next time! Mdann52 (talk) 20:04, 15 January 2026 (UTC)

Filename tools

A few years back, either you created a filename tool for me on toolforge, or user:Coren did and you subsequently took over for him as maintainer.

Would it be possible to create an equivalent tool for Commons? A dynamically-updating list of all files (excluding redirects) whose names are ten characters or less (not including extensions)? If the yield would be too large, we could talk about additional parameters to narrow it down somewhat, but there's no point in doing that if the overall task isn't possible. DS (talk) 17:33, 24 January 2026 (UTC)

@DragonflySixtyseven that's a blast from the past! Let me take a look tomorrow and see if I can knock something together. Mdann52 (talk) 17:45, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
Give Short Names a go - I've updated the home page to point towards enwiki or commons. It's a bit slow, but I'll put a result cap on there to speed it up a bit! Mdann52 (talk) 19:15, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
Maybe if we do 6 characters or less, and a separate page for 7 to 10? DS (talk) 02:38, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Destubathon of the Americas

You are invited to participate in the Destubathon of the Americas, a contest/editathon which will run from May 1 to May 31. The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible. A good chance to have fun in expanding many of our old stale stubs and win up to £2000 ($2680) in Amazon vouchers for expanding stub articles. Sign up in the Contestants/participants section on the contest page if interested. Even if not interested in prizes you are still warmly welcome to participate in it as an editathon! Hopefully we can achieve something significant in the month of May together! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:16, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
