Welcome!
Welcome to Wikipedia, AjaxSmack! My name is Ryan, aka Acetic Acid. I noticed that you were new and haven't received any messages yet. I just wanted to see how you were doing. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it uses different formatting than other sites that use HTML and CSS. In the long run, though, you'll find that the WikiSyntax is a lot easier and faster than those other ways. Here are a few links to get you started:
- How to edit a page
- Editing, policy, conduct, and structure tutorial
- Picture tutorial
- How to write a great article
There are a lot of policies and guides to read, but I highly recommend reading over those first. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. Please be sure to sign your name on Talk Pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, along with a link to your user page. This way, others know when you left a message and how to find you. It's easier than having to type out your name, right? :)
I hope you enjoy contributing to Wikipedia. We can use all the help we can get! Have a nice day. Sincerely, Ryan 01:03, August 5, 2005 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Cartney
edit
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Cartney requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
editHello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:23, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
There is no need to restore resolved discussions to the talk page. Unless you want to dispute that "I Drink Wine" is the third single from the album or challenge the GA review, unarchiving neither of the discussions makes sense. A 14-month old discussion is in no way recent.--NØ 18:52, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- The last discussion on the page was from less than a week ago and should not be archived under any circumstance. '"Unless you want to dispute..." The utility of talk page discussions is not only for purposes of disputing; a very recently closed RM discussion is still relevant to those wanting to know the outcome of the discussion.
- The entire talk history is only 24K (WP:PREMATUREARCHIVE recommends archiving at 75K), so there's really no "page loading time" issue in 2024. Having an entirely blank talk page with 24K of material and a redundant archive is pointless. — AjaxSmack 20:38, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics
editYou have recently edited a page related to the English Wikipedia article titles policy and Manual of Style, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practices;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Not archiving
editCan I ask why you chose to not archive your talk page? You are 100% within your rights to not do so, but while it may not be bothersome to you, many editors (like myself) have slow connections, and having a very large talk page like yours can really hamper communication. I would encourage you to setup archiving. Just so it is clear, no information will be lost in the process... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:57, 9 October 2025 (UTC)

Examples
editI was looking at this discussion with a mind to closing it and your example caught my eye. Where on earth did you get the idea that "中國話" is the primary native name of the Chinese language? If you're going to throw around examples, please first ensure that they are correct. In this case a look at the Wikipedia article, which provides several correct alternatives, would have sufficed. Toadspike [Talk] 16:18, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think I said it is "the primary native name"; feel free to replace it in the example with 普通話, 國語, 華語, 中文, 漢語, or whatever you'd like. My point was merely that article titles don't always match what native speakers say out loud. — AjaxSmack 15:30, 25 November 2025 (UTC)
- I got your point. It doesn't make the example any less ridiculous. And I will not edit your comment for you. Just...try to be more careful next time, okay? Toadspike [Talk] 16:10, 25 November 2025 (UTC)

December 2025
edit
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to Herb Rooney when you modified the page, you introduced unknown parameters. Just because you specify |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= must be defined in the template. You can look at the documentation for the template you are using but it is also helpful to use the preview button before you save your edit; this helps you find any errors you have made and ensure that the values you have added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show you what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is strongly recommended that you use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions, contact the help desk for assistance.
