Dictatorship - experienced editor input?

Hi - I have shamelessly jumped on your talk page, because you made an edit to Dictatorship. There is currently an IP user (User:47.189.239.148) making uncited changes to this page. I have commented on the user's talk page, but they are continuing not to provide reliable sources, and in the past they have had warnings about this. I have reverted their changes, but they have reverted them back. Revert on Margaret Sanger

Hi! I noticed you reverted an IP recently about their characterization of Sanger in the lead. Can you explain why you did that? The characterization does seem to be factually accurate, so what's the problem?

And was your use of the rollback button intentional? I'm asking because I've hit the button unintentionally once or twice in the past.

Mostly MOS:FIRSTBIO, but also because these sorts of assertions have been discussed extensively on article talk pages and have never really gained consensus. Didn't mean to use rollback, but it looks like the IP editor had been blocked under a similar IP before making the edit. Can you give some illustrative examples of "these sorts of assertions"?

Also, just now I randomly came across Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who is described as a eugenicist at the end of the list of activities/occupations in the lead. The characterization is cited to something.

I suppose I could raise the issue on the article's TP, but I'd prefer to deal with that kind of thing when I have more headspace and stomach for controversial discussions. After all (at least according to some editors), there's no deadline.

I could give examples, but I wonder if that would be seen as a little bit silly since we're talking about discussions on one article talk page. The discussions on race and eugenics are pretty easily located by looking through the seven pages of archives. Re: the Gilman article, I agree that it is cited to something; that something is a Britannica entry that doesn't contain the string eug anywhere on the page. Darryl Strawberry is a FOUR time WS Champion.

Hi, just trying to update a page where I know the information is correct - but it keeps reverting to incorrect information. It’s Darryl Strawberry’s information page. He is a four time World Series Champion. Not 3. While I understand he didn’t play in the ‘98 WS - he was on the active roster until a colon cancer diagnosis after the start of the 1998 playoffs, at which point he was moved to the disabled list and Ledee was call to the active roster. In MLB, the players who are awarded with a ring, and being considered a “World Series Champion” are anyone who stood in the batter’s box, or on the pitcher’s mound for the winning team during that season. Darryl Strawberry is a 4 time WS Champion. 1986 with the NY Mets and 1996, 1998, and 1999 with the NY Yankees. Please update. DennisR1283 (talk) 04:56, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

For this issue, you might discuss at Talk:Darryl Strawberry or WT:BASEBALL. See Archive 46 at WT:BASEBALL for one recent discussion. Our common approach on Wikipedia, which mirrors the approach used at reliable sources like Baseball Reference, is usually to omit the WS as an infobox highlight if the player was not on the postseason roster. I think it's more likely to be an error or misunderstanding than a beating, unless I'm really missing something big here. Is there any talk page discussion of this? I would maybe start there. Maybe work to clarify the meaning of investigations. To me, in the context of a medical specialty, it would refer to something like lab tests or X-rays. Something to consider: You may find that other editors are more receptive to your points in that discussion if you remove the extra question marks and the all-caps text. I know it must be stressful to be reverted frequently, particularly if there's an unsatisfactory edit summary with the revert, but I think this message may not have the intended effect. If it's a simple mistake, there's usually an editor who won't mind discussing or fixing the issue, but if it comes across as a situation involving unnecessary drama, people may hesitate to get involved. With that edit summary, I meant that the information you added was already in the article one paragraph above where you added it. Have restored the page. Will change the Bachelor of History to Bachelor of Arts in history. Will also correct Meinrad, Indiana, to St. Meinrad Indiana. I would say that the easiest thing to do is to simply check the sources if you desire to add new information to an entry. If “a whole bunch” of edits were reverted, that would have to be because multiple editors noticed the problems.

The “Bachelor of” issue is a recurring one; usually I just fix it. Note that a Bachelor of History is a nonexistent degree; usually a bachelor's degree in history is a BA in the US. A Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) is a rare degree in the US; most bachelor’s degrees in philosophy are BAs, but close attention to the sources will help you make this determination for sure.

Could you address “1988ordination” and “when Bishop J. Peter Sartain named jo, vicar general”? These are edits that most editors would detect when checking their work. Thank you. As part of that freedom, I made basic changes such as turning the word “bishopof” into two words. These are changes that should be caught by even the most cursory proofreading. If such issues come up once in a while, no worries. If they come up on nearly every edit, it comes across as an indication of carelessness.

I can see from the links that you provided that this situation is just the latest of many contentious matters in which they have been involved. No problem! I understand what you mean for sure. Recently, I have just come to realize that if users have made it well into adulthood (their 70s in this case) without developing much appreciation for humility or collegiality, I am unlikely to be able to instill such values into them myself. In these cases, I just try to clean up the edits and report to venues like SPI if it becomes obvious enough.

Newcomer Support

Hi Larry, I appreciates your feed back to edits that I have made to the Honourable Mr Jeremy Buckingham, MLCs wiki page. As you can tell I'm new to editing Wikipedia and so far, it has been a positive experience, however some parts are proving to be a nightmare such as replacing photos in the infobox.

You appear to know what's up so would it be too much to ask for directions to a simple step by step tutorial on replacing photos on Wikipedia. I've read through the official Wikipedia stuff but so far has not been fruitful.

Your 27 July 2024 edit on the Kamala Harris page

Dear Larry, I fail to understand your stated reason for reverting my edit regarding the name of Kamala Harris' law school alma mater; that institution is currently known as the University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco, not "UC Hastings". To employ the old name simply sows confusion.

The major reason for using the new name on the Kamala Harris Wiki page is to comply with the actions of the State Bar of California. If you use the attorney search function on the State Bar's website at this time, you'd see that Harris' law school affiliation is listed as "UC, College of the Law, San Francisco". In fact, the California State Bar has changed the insitutional affiliations for all California attorneys who graduated from said institution to reflect the new nomenclature regardless of the year of graduation; this change is as official as it gets since State Bar actions are overseen by the California State Supreme Court and is also governed by statute. In other words, the law school's name-change, an action that required the explicit approval of the California Legislature due to the special nature of that institution's founding, is meant to be retroactive (the old name now merits only a historical footnote).

Finally, if we were to follow the logic of your July 27th edit, then we would need to refer to all graduates of the pre-1927 UCLA as alumni of the "Southern Branch of the University of California" rather than "UCLA", which is of course confusing to the point of being ridiculous. If you have no other valid objections, I will proceed to undo your revert tomorrow.

Good morning. Wikipedia doesn't typically look to the styles utilized by licensing bodies to dictate our use of prose. When one searches for Kamala Harris on the state bar website, a simple last name, first name search gets us right to the correct individual; the name of the school does not help us in any way to locate the correct person. Generally, when we have doubts about the name of something, it can help to look at coverage of the subject in reliable sources.

With that said, I don't feel strongly enough about the issue to lose sleep one way or the other. You might just make sure that you clean up the remaining mention of UC Hastings in the lead section so that it doesn't stick out as inconsistent. Larry Hockett (Talk) 09:26, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

2025 Update from Women in Green

Hello Larry Hockett:

2024 has wrapped up, and what a full year it was for WikiProject Women in Green! Over the past year, we hosted two edit-a-thons, one themed around women's history and another on women around the world. We also managed to achieve most of our 2024 annual goals, nominating 75 articles for GA, reviewing 64 GA nominations, nominating 8 articles for FAC, peer reviewing 3 articles and reviewing 10 FAC nominations. Excellent work, and thank you to everyone involved!

For 2025 we have a new set of goals for nominations and reviews. In particular, we would like to see more articles on our Hot 100 list being improved and nominated for GA this year. If you take a look at the list and see an article you are interested in contributing to, feel free to add it and yourself to our Hot 100 project discussion. You might even find someone interested in collaborating with you!

This year, as with every year, we hope you will join us in helping improve our coverage of women and women's works on this encyclopedia. Every contribution helps. We'll see you around!

The Citadel

Hi there. You reverted my edit on the The Citadel without leaving a reason. Would you care to tell me why did you revert? I removed this from the lede: "All students, both cadets and non-cadets, are eligible to participate in Citadel athletic programs and there is a long history of cadet and non-cadet success on and off the sports fields." I felt it was a unnecessary puffery to say there is long history of success in sports, as it could be said at any powerhouse D1 program. TBH, they aren't even in a power conference to brag like this. Aurelio Lopez

Hi. You recently reverted an edit I made to the Aurelio Lopez page. I am an outsider here (reader, not a a regular editor) so I want to be respectful of the rules and ettiquite. So, I thought I'd ask how I might adjust my edit to make to conform to the standards that moderators uphold. The edit was to add to the Legacy section noting that there is a hamburger at a restaurant in Flagstaff, AZ named after Lopez. I made the edit because Senor Smoke was my favorite baseball player and my dear friend, the restaurant owner, named the burger after him. I understand that this is NOT critical information.  ;-). But I intentionally phrased it in such a way that was factual and didn't seem promotional. I'm smart enough to know that a Wikipedia mention is not going to sell any burgers, nor should it. However, there is a statement in the Legacy section that states that a little known rock band named an album after him (Senor Smoke). That item wasn't removed for being an ad to sell records. How is mentioning the hamburger more promotional? both are commercial goods. The hamburger is at least culturally relevant, as it has been for sale at a highly successful restaurant for more than a decade and tens of thousands of people have ordered one.

Anyway, my point is not to complain, but instead to ask advice on how I might phrase and submit the entry such that it meets the community standards and doesn't get reverted.

I know this is not what you're going to want to hear, but the edit was removed precisely because rephrasing wouldn't help. It's a very trivial detail in the context of the player's life. If the person who created the burger is your good friend, that makes it even less appropriate, not more.

This will make it so easy to understand: Imagine popping open a paper encyclopedia and navigating to his entry. You and I would both be shocked, I'm sure, to discover information about a burger in Flagstaff. It sounds like we share a longtime love of Senor Smoke though! Not to worry. I respect the platform and those who build and uphold its standards. In case you're willing to hear an outsider's perspective, here's mine:

You and I would both be shocked, I'm sure, to discover information about a burger in Flagstaff" is a perfect reason why this sort of benign cultural reference SHOULD be allowed. Of course it is trivial information, but to reject it implies that one can draw a bright line between what's important enough to be mentioned and what isn't. I know this isn't what you're going to want to hear but Wikipedia and its moderators cannot and have not met that standard. Frankly, if I were to pop open a paper encyclopedia to read about my favorite player, I'd be shocked to discover the mention of an irrelevant Detroit rock band which named an album after him. Maybe that's more appropriate to have on Wikipedia, since there's an accepted standard of bands and individual albums having dedicated pages (whereas burgers don't) but the two are similarly inconsequential as they relate to Aurelio Lopez. No reason to allow the rock band mention on this page just because it links to an entry (for the album) which itself is clearly allowable and relevant.

Thx. No need to keep replying to me. At this point I'm only asking for my own interest. I get the standards you're trying to apply and just read the "Good Article Criteria." My question is more about linkages than inclusion. Let's accept the following premise as true:

a) Senor Smoke (the album) is a good article and properly included in the encyclopedia.

b) Senor Smoke (the burger) does not meet the standard of importance and coverage to warrant inclusion in the encyclopedia.

Despite the above, what standard does Senor Smoke (the album) need to meet in order to be referenced on the page of Aurelio Lopez (aka Senor Smoke) the baseball player? I get why the album gets its own page. I get why the burger doesn't. I don't get why the album gets to be referred to on the baseball player's page any more than the burger which doesn't have its own page. I guess a simpler way of asking my question is, don't you guys apply similar standards of relevance to the importance of the connection? I just Googled "Senor Smoke Album" and clicked through all of the links on the first few pages. Not one of them mentioned the connection to Aurelio Lopez in any way, so regardless of whether the album is deserving of an entry--the mention of it on the Aurelio Lopez page is functionally spam.

article revision: adding an establishment

good morning, i stumbled on a page about lesbian bars (happy pride) and noticed that it was missing one. ive made some revisions as it keeps getting deleted. I re edited it as it seemed like an advertisement and that wasnt my goal. ive also re edited it with a citation of an independent article. my goal is to add this lesbian bar to the list of lesbian bars. there are so few of them in America that any that do exist should be on this list. A bit more care in your copyedits

Just a friendly note that, ok, copyedits like this are unnecessary - but since it doesn’t make the prose significantly worse, sure, go for it. However, and I don’t know if you were planning to do cleanup and I’ve just beaten you to it (if so sorry), your edit introduced some little grammatical errors (fixed for ref). In short, if you’re going to make unnecessary copy edits, maybe just a bit more care in I think kinda the awareness of full sentences (rather than just changing the start and ignoring the rest). This is an instance where I was close to flat reverting for the edit not improving anything but introducing errors, but didn’t want to potentially start a dispute on a newly promoted GA - and I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate it in future either :) Kingsif (talk) 22:15, 14 June 2025 (UTC)

Women in Green reviewing drive

Hello Larry Hockett:

This month, February 2026, WikiProject Women in Green is participating in the February 2026 GAN Backlog Drive, in which we're aiming to review as many outstanding Good Article (GA) nominations about women and women's works as possible. If you want to help out, you can check out the project talk page for a list of nominations in need of review (including some WiG originals). If you haven't reviewed a GA nomination before, be sure to check out the reviewing instructions and guidelines and feel free to ask for a mentor to check your work.

We are also working together with a wikithon hosted on 5 February by Wikimedia UK, which will focus on writing and improving articles about women involved in sustainable development.
