editHello, GabrielMABruce. I noticed you've been working on articles about Nova Scotia, and I wanted to thank you for your contributions. Please feel free to join us at WikiProject Nova Scotia and/or WikiProject Canada if you're interested in collaborating.
By the way, if you have a source available for the historical information you're adding to Municipality of the District of Guysborough, could you please add them as inline citations? Otherwise, folks have no way of verifying the information. I can help you out with this if need be. Let me know if you have any questions! Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 21:11, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hello MediaKyle, I’m a resident of Guysborough County and a board member of the Guysborough Historical Society. We operate the Old Court House Museum in the community of Guysborough. I noticed recently many articles about communities in the county were stubs, and some of the non-stub articles needed expansion. My goal is to improve the Wikipedia articles for Guysborough County to the best of my ability.
- While I can assure you that the historical information I’ve been adding is verifiable and from either our Museums original documents or published material, you’re 100% right I need to add proper citations. I think I’ve just been putting it off until the end because it’s not the fun part! I’ll start going through and adding citations to the articles I’ve worked on tonight.
- I’m still new to Wikipedia editing, and I’d be happy to learning more and collaborating. I’ll look at joining the Wikiprojects you linked there.
- Thanks,
- Gabriel GabrielMABruce (talk) 22:29, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back to me. I'm very happy to see another editor interested in expanding Nova Scotian content. I'm from Hants County myself, so as far as articles about communities, I've mostly focused on those. Most articles you see in Template:NSEastHants and to a lesser degree Template:NSWestHants have been cleaned up by myself, and might serve as some inspiration. I also put together a template for Guysborough County not too long ago at Template:NSGuysborough but I don't recall if I added it to all of those articles yet. There's also a list of Guysborough County geography stubs available at Category:Guysborough County, Nova Scotia geography stubs, if that helps at all.
- Many Nova Scotia topics which deserve a Wikipedia article currently do not have one, either. While I would recommend you continue spending some time working on existing articles before creating a new one, I can definitely see an article for the Guysborough courthouse coming to be. I noticed you added a conflict of interest userbox regarding Mr. Harry Bruce as well - I took a look to see what sources are immediately available, and I'm basically certain he meets Wikipedia's notability criteria. I'd love to help you out with this article, if and when you decide to start working on it.
- If you need a hand with anything, or have any questions at all, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm quite active on here and generally reply to queries pretty fast. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 22:56, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info regarding article templates, it’s not something I’ve heard of yet. I’d like to eventually make my way through the Guysborough location stubs. I’ll have a look at some of the articles you’ve done for Hants, I’m looking for inspiration regarding formatting section. It would also be great to have an article for the Court House Museum, with a section on the historical society.
- Harry Bruce was my grandfather. He was quite prolific and well known in NS throughout his long career. My family thought there should be an article about him especially so after he passed away last August, as there is one for my great-grandafather, Charles Tory Bruce. I first made a Wikipedia account a while back for this purpose and I had written one, but never submitted it for review. Looks like the draft has been deleted now. I didn’t declare a conflict with my great- grandfather because he was dead decades before I was born, but let me know if I should.
- It’s nice to see someone so engaged with improving Wikipedia regarding the area they live. I’ve used Wikipedia since I was a kid and I realize the importance it has on how an area is perceived. I felt like people seeing Guysborough have such empty articles kind of reinforced the sense of Guysborough being a rural backwater. GabrielMABruce (talk) 00:42, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- Regarding the formatting, I think you might be looking for MOS:LAYOUT. It provides an overview on how to layout the various sections and templates you might find on an article. Most of the articles I've done for Hants County should be following this format.
- I had an idea that you might be related to Harry Bruce, based on your username. I'm aware of his work, I was actually kind of surprised to see that the article didn't already exist. How much had you written of the draft? Drafts are deleted after a certain period of inactivity, but they can be brought back. If you'd like, I can request undeletion for you.
- As for the conflicts of interest, the relevant guidance is located at WP:COI. In the case of Charles Tory Bruce, I wouldn't worry about it too much; but it wouldn't hurt to add a note on your user page indicating that you're related, but haven't met. The main thing to keep in mind when writing about subjects you have a personal connection to is maintaining neutral point of view, and avoiding original research. You'll figure all this out as you go, so don't worry too much about reading all of the policies.
- After I post this message, I'm also going to slap a welcome template on the top of your talk page with some more helpful links. Feel free to remove it whenever you feel it's no longer useful. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 01:12, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- I can’t recall exactly how much I’d written of the article, but I don’t mind going through and doing it again. I’ll see how tricky the recovery process is. I’ll add a note about my great grandfather or add a COI.
- I’ve added myself to the members section of the WikiProject Nova Scotia page, and added the identifiers to my user page.
- Thank you very much for welcoming me to the community! GabrielMABruce (talk) 03:47, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
Books
editI popped into the library this morning, and managed to snag a copy of "Each Moment as it Flies" and "Halifax and Me". There's some fantastic material in here, and I'm starting to think there's a good chance we can see this article eventually reach featured article status between the two of us, just based on the sheer volume of sources available. If it's alright with you, once you're satisfied with what you've written on the draft I'd like to take a shot at expanding it using these materials before we send it off to the mainspace. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 15:20, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
- Glad you were able to find some of his books! It’s an interesting thing that so much of his work was autobiographical in nature, his entire life story is recorded throughout his writings. To be honest I have not read much of his work aside from “Page Fright” and an “Illustrated History of Nova Scotia”. It’s wonderful to hear you say you think the article can be developed to featured article status!
- Absolutely contribute to expanding it! It ideally shouldn’t even be me writing the article because of the COI. If you want to start reworking it with the sources you’ve found then be my guest, I’ll be around off and on today inbetween work. I’ll be seeing my mum and grandma (Harry’s widow) tonight and can get a new photo for the article either today or tomorrow. GabrielMABruce (talk) 17:06, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
New article
editCheck out this article I just spontaneously threw together while sifting through the Beaton Institute website: Helen Kendall
Just wanted to show off. Thought it was neat, and having a major award like that automatically confers notability so along with the CBC article it was an easy decision. MediaKyle (talk) 20:48, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
- Nice! A good, short article. I'd never heard of her or the RRC before. GabrielMABruce (talk) 22:26, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
Thought
editI had a crazy idea yesterday, figured I might as well bring it up in case it interests you at all. I'm not sure if you've noticed it yet but Wikipedia has its own news publication called The Signpost, you can see it coming through on my talk page. I thought it would be rather poetic if you were to write a short piece for The Signpost detailing your experience joining Wikipedia to write the article about your grandfather. Just wanted to leave it with you in case you want another project. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 22:24, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
- Well now there's an idea, I hadn't heard of The Signpost before. I would absolutely be interested in writing a short piece. I'll make note of this and circle back to it in a couple days after looking at some other Signpost articles for examples. GabrielMABruce (talk) 01:51, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

Bibliography
editCurrently hunting down Harry's newspaper articles for Draft:Harry Bruce bibliography. There's a few in here you'll probably enjoy. See Farewell, Toronto – please don't change too much (1971) and Pot a growing concern in B.C. (2007). Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 16:03, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- My mum will love the article on leaving Toronto, having been born there and lived there later in life. It's also interesting to see him take a progressive stance on pot legalization and other social issues. Thanks for sharing these with me and for the research you're doing on the bibliography! I'll come back to do some more work improving Harry's article once I get a bit more done on his father's. GabrielMABruce (talk) 17:38, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Turns out the amount of material on Newspapers.com is enormous. I've been downloading each one as I go, so far I'm at a staggering 138(!) clippings and still going. Ones that are good for the article I've been adding to the refideas. I thought you might like to see this one as well. If you want I can email you a zip file with everything I've collected when I'm done, I've also been individually cropping every published photo of him, and there's some nice ones. MediaKyle (talk) 20:23, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- 138? Wow, that must be a lot of work collecting all those clippings. I sent the three specific articles you linked over to my mum, I’ll show the one in the Ottawa Journal about her and Harry marrying to my grandma.
- I still haven’t looked through our photos of Harry yet. I found a large box hidden away at the old Bruce house full of hundreds of historic photos taken by our family a couple days back so I’ve been taking some of the good ones from there for use in related articles. I did find one of Charles his wife and sons (Harry included) that might be good for Harry (or Charles’) article. GabrielMABruce (talk) 15:45, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
- Not sure if you noticed but Atlantic Insight is published now, turned out to be an interesting story although Harry doesn't show up in the sources as much as I expected. I find it curious that Alexa McDonough's husband was tied up with it, wonder if that has something to do with all those articles that got written about her. Next up: Draft:Atlantic Business Magazine. -- MediaKyle (talk) 15:29, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- I think at this rate you should be getting an Atlantic Journalism Award for all your work on topics relating to Nova Scotian journalism! The Atlantic Insight article is great, I just read parts of it to my family while having Mother’s Day brunch. They didn't remember how much of a role the tobacco advertising had in the magazine and its downfall. I found that stuff quite interesting, my grandfather used to be a big smoker but quit a few years before I was born.
- Another suggestion for an article: Gillis Philip Purcell. He was general superintendent of the Canadian Press for 13 years (replaced by Charles Tory Bruce) then becoming general manager. I discovered him through some comments he made about Charles in Wainwrights biography. He lost his leg while a war correspondent during WWII. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, so I think that ensures notability requirements are met. I can take up researching this article soon. GabrielMABruce (talk) 17:08, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- I appreciate the kind words, I'm glad you liked the article on Atlantic Insight. I think it's still missing some details about the people who contributed to it, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out. Atlantic Business Magazine is proving to be more difficult - they claim to be founded in 1989, but I'm quite sure it's the same magazine that was originally founded in 1982 and went under with Atlantic Insight, but I can't find anything that explicitly states that.
- Also, I quickly threw together a Wikidata item on Gillis Philip Purcell for you. Will likely throw some more reference material on it later. See d:Q134438701. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 19:07, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- Just noticed the GA nomination! Good luck and let me know if there's anything I can do.
- A question, was Harry the editor until 1986? I'm not sure that's correct as by 1986 he has bought the Bruce homestead was living in Port Shoreham. I think Marilyn Macdonald took over in 1981 before Fraser. I'm not very familiar with Atlantic Business , but my uncle Alec is up for an AJA for Commentary this year for his piece on Harry. I can ask him if he knows anything about the magazine as I believe he's been a contributor for some time.
- Thanks for doing the Wikidata thing! To be honest I'm not familiar with that part of the whole Wikimedia project space yet. GabrielMABruce (talk) 19:48, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- Great catch, I feel silly for putting that on there now. The source specifically says she took over from Ralph Surette, I'll have to look into that and see if I can get a concrete date for when he left the magazine. As far as the GA goes, at this point it's just a matter of waiting for someone to pick up the review. If you think there's any way you can make the article better, have at it. MediaKyle (talk) 20:02, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- If you check the issues, the editorial piece of that month might note the changeup, or the change between issues will be listed in the "staff" section.
- My work on Charles's article is continuing, I just moved it to B class after recent development. A question though, I noticed Harry's article is listed as Mid importance for the Wikiproject, in your opinion is Charles' article Low or Mid? On the one hand he lived in Toronto for most of his career, but on the other hand his creative writing was exclusively focused on rural Nova Scotia. Let me know what you think. GabrielMABruce (talk) 20:20, 11 May 2025 (UTC)

The importance parameter actually doesn't really matter all that much, and is more of a behind-the-scenes tracking mechanism for editors. If you take a look at my toolbox you'll see I have two tables, one for WP Canada and one for WP Nova Scotia, and the importance allows me to see which articles of high importance need the most work. The ns-importance parameter is a recent addition, and is intended for the importance to the province, whereas the regular importance parameter is importance to Canada overall. There's some more insight at WP:ASSESS. For Charles Tory Bruce, I'd probably list him as low for Canada and NS, but mid for poetry and/or journalism... It's a pretty subjective thing. MediaKyle (talk) 21:01, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, good to know, was curious how it worked. I've started looking at some other NS articles listed as high or mid priority for improvement. There sure is a lot of stuff to do on here, hard to know where to start sometimes. GabrielMABruce (talk) 22:45, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
Bibliography (again)
editHowdy. Just wanted to let you know that Harry Bruce bibliography is now live, some of the references there might be useful for expanding the main article as well. Once I write articles about a couple of his books I'm going to put up a navbox, i.e. at User:MediaKyle/Harry Bruce, and that'll about do it. Just got distracted with some side projects like Mace of Nova Scotia and Statue of Winston Churchill (Halifax). Just so you know, we didn't completely miss our chance to send the article to DYK, as you get another chance after it's been promoted to GA. Speaking of which... Charles Tory Bruce is in pretty good shape now, and if you wanted to take it further you could try nominating it and see what a reviewer says. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 22:50, 18 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hello! I haven't been very active here the past week, got busy with other stuff. The bibliography looks great, I was thinking of asking you about possible articles for some of Harry and Charles's award winning works. I thought The Mulgrave Road should have one at least as in won a GG award.
- I resigned as treasurer of the Guysborough Historical Society so that I could become the curator's assistant at the museum this season. I'll have easy access to the museums records and all published books relating to Guysborough County, which will help a lot with improving Guysborough related articles.
- I spent some time in Halifax the past week searching through my grandads stuff. I found the original studio script of Word for an Ambassador of Dreams, and it turns out Canadian actor Colin Fox provided the voice of Charles Bruce. There is some interest by a regional theatre company in adapting it for stage, would be neat to have it performed in a new medium. I also found a record of the inventory of the Dalhousie archives of Charles Bruce, and a working draft of his final unpublished poetry collection and autobiography, Living and Recall. A publisher declined it for publication in 1968, saying they didn't believe "regional" poetry would sell well. I also found two lengthier accounts of Charles being shot down during the Battle of Arnhem.
- I'm sorry to have missed the first DYK nomination but I'm expecting to do it when the articles on both Harry and Charles are at some point promoted to GA. I'm glad you think the article on Charles is in good enough shape for review, but there are some more notable details that need to be added. I skimmed over some stuff in my reading of his biography and I have to go back over it. Once I've done that and verified everything matches up to what's said in the cited source, I'll submit it for GA nomination. After that I'll return to Harry's article and do the same.
- I've been doing some research for Guysborough County geography articles, and found some fantastic, highly detailed historical maps from the 1870's to add to about a dozen articles. I'm planning on spending a sunny day off work driving around and taking pictures of notable sites and communities. GabrielMABruce (talk) 02:49, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- That's an interesting note about Word for an Ambassador of Dreams. If it does end up being performed in theatre, you'll have to let me know, I'll surely need to see that. Do you happen to know who the original broadcaster of that was? I was trying to figure it out for the bibliography, didn't have much luck. I know Harry was a television host for CBC for a short time, but I'm less sure about his history in radio... I wonder if he actually performed it, or just wrote the script? I bet there's a recording out there somewhere.
- No need to apologize about missing the DYK, like I said we'll have more opportunities. I decided to feature the article on the Nova Scotia portal I put together the other day anyways so maybe that'll draw some attention to it.
- As for the photos - I've been thinking about historical buildings the last few days, and I've realized that almost all of the articles about heritage sites in NS are in Halifax. If you wanted to take some pictures / send along some reference material for the Guysborough County courthouse, I can take a crack at starting a draft for that... Today I'll clean up the Commons category for Guysborough at commons:Category:Guysborough County, Nova Scotia and add some more subcategories and such for you to sort stuff into as well. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 12:51, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Based on the front cover of this script, Word for an Ambassador of Dreams was recorded and produced on 8 Feb 1975, and then aired on 28 Feb 1975 on Maritimes AM. It was produced at Studio H on Argyle Street in Halifax. I think this means it was a CBC production, my mother and grandmother both remembered him doing some radio writing for CBC after his year as a television host. Harry wrote and performed the script, playing himself/narrator. I haven't found a recording yet but it's possible we have one somewhere. I'll let you know if anything comes about with the script being performed.
- I'll take a new picture of the courthouse on the next clear day. Older photos taken pre-pandemic aren't good as the building has been undergoing heritage restorations the past 5 years. All the shingles were replaced and then painted white, the asphalt roof was replaced with cedar shakes, and copper eavestroughs/gutters to replace the modern ones. It looks way nicer now. Starting this year we'll be flying a Union Jack from a new mounting in the historical location. The last of the work, 3 replacement windows, are being installed over the next 2 weeks, so a final photo can be taken then, once the museum is open. I can also take photos of the inside.
- Regarding reference material, I checked out a book today for that exact purpose. It hasn't been in print recently, but its called Along the Streets of Guysborough (ISBN 0-9687379-1-9) and gives the history of many of the historic buildings, past and present, in the town of Guysborough. Pages 120-121 discuss the court house and it's predecessor buildings. I can send you the relevant passage on the talk page of a future draft. Other local history books almost certainly have more info, the only one that I know of easily accessible online is History of the County of Guysborough. I'll be using this book to improve other GC articles. GabrielMABruce (talk) 01:42, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- That's interesting, I think you're right that Studio H indicates CBC. If you manage to find a recording I'd be quite interested to hear it, and we can add a snippet of it to the article too although I don't think we'd be able to upload the whole thing due to copyright.
- Speaking of copyright... I've been trying to understand the rules, and I've come to the conclusion that The Mulgrave Road is actually in the public domain now. I found it on PDF here. I'm going to ask some other folks and if they say it's good for the Commons I'll go ahead and upload it. Also, if you have a couple hundred dollars kicking around, Doull's has a couple very interesting pieces... if I had more money, I'd go get them both.
- Those are perfect sources for the courthouse, thank you. Those together plus the CRHP designation is pretty much enough, anything else would just be a bonus. I'll throw together the bones of a draft and leave a link here for you if you want to work on it. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 11:22, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- Neat that The Mulgrave Road is out of copyright, I didn’t know that. My mum has been planning on making a websites for both Charles and Harry for sometime, with records of their works and careers. I think anything out of copyright (and unpublished/unfinished works) should be uploaded there. Anything still in copyright would ultimately be up to my uncle.
- Regarding the copies of Wild Apples at Doull’s, those are great. For the signatures, Charles was reportedly quite the ladies man at Mount A according to Wainwrights biography. We are fortunate enough to still have two or three copies, I know two are signed to his sisters. GabrielMABruce (talk) 15:53, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- Draft:Guysborough Court House here you go, should be a good start. MediaKyle (talk) 11:55, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
- Great, thank you. I might get some work done on the draft when I’m back at the museum after lunch. GabrielMABruce (talk) 15:54, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
Image
editGood morning. I've just noticed that the image of Harry Bruce got deleted off the commons, apparently for "no permission", so it seems somehow that VRT request went wrong. Was wondering if you might take a look and see about submitting a new one. By the way... I did start Frank Sobey: The Man and the Empire, still needs some work though. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 09:45, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, my apologies for having this left this so long. I've been working full time since late May, and have some other projects on the side. I've been wanting to come back and do some more Wikipedia editing so I'm gonna make time for it, I had a lot of stuff I wanted to do. I don't think my mum actually sent the email for the VRT request, my fault for not following up on it with her. I'll try and get that sorted. GabrielMABruce (talk) 21:50, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hi there, no worries at all - I figured you'd be around again eventually. The catalogue of Nova Scotia writer biographies has greatly expanded since you were last here... Take a peek at my contributions page. Also threw together an article on the Atlantic Journalism Awards a while ago.
- By the way... I don't mean to be a stickler, but I just noticed Tory family pop up on my watchlist, and the article has no references... An article about one of the Torys got redirected there through AfD a while back, and I'm mildly concerned that this might end up nominated for deletion too if we don't get some sources on there. Do you think you could go back and add citations to what you wrote? Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 22:56, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- Looks like you've been busy! Great to have a article on the AJAs. Also, good to see a well developed article with so much info on Charles Bruce Fergusson. He was a friend of my great-grandfather, they bonded over a shared passion for Nova Scotian history.
- The other day I picked up a biography of Henry Marshal Tory we had in the basement of the museum and discovered that Will Bruce, my 2nd great-grandfather, was his childhood best friend (as well as later brother in law). It sparked my interest in refreshing my knowledge of the family, and I was going to ask for your advice on the various Tory articles.
- Tory family is in a pretty sorry state and needs work. I think John Alexander Tory Sr should have his own article as I've found published material on his career in two books about Sun Life Financial. An article that perhaps should be deleted is Robert Kirk Tory. As far I can tell his only reason for notability is that he was the father of the three famous Tory brothers, and by that logic his wife Anorah should also have an article. Any relevant content on Robert K Tory's article should in my opinion be made part of the Tory family article. I'll start adding what I've found later tonight. GabrielMABruce (talk) 19:48, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
- That all sounds reasonable to me. I'm not sure where all these Tory articles came from but I'd say they can certainly be consolidated a bit for the less-notable members. There's no need to delete the old articles though, you can just redirect them to the main article. I think the key with these sorts of articles is just making sure they don't end up resembling a genealogy project... You'll find some good inspiration at articles like Kennedy family, or the less developed Trudeau family.
- Very cool that your great-grandfather knew C. Bruce Fergusson by the way... I find it quite interesting how all these Nova Scotia literature articles are connected in some way. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 12:10, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
- I haven't checked the edit logs for the articles but John Howard Tory, former mayor of Toronto, was quite prominent in Ontario politics. People probably created more articles on Tory's family after his election as Mayor (I've heard rumblings he's planning on attempting a political comeback next election). Torys LLP is a pretty big multinational law firm too.
- I wasn't familiar with this sort of "family" article before. I'm going to use the articles for other notable Canadian families such as Trudeau, Mulrooney, and Ford as inspiration for the Tory family article, and I'll continue working on some of the Tory individual articles.
- From memory, I recall a story of C.B. Fergusson sneaking C.T. Bruce into Province House so they could start going through some long forgotten files and papers in the attic. There's some correspondence between them at the Dal Archives, I've been meaning to go there to look at the material on my grandfather and great-grandfather. An interesting find
editGood afternoon. Great work on James Cranswick Tory, the article is really coming together now. Might be a good candidate to submit for a GA review once it's complete.
I wanted to tell you about a book I found at the library recently with a contribution from Harry Bruce that I hadn't heard of until I seen it. The book is called Shorelines: Letters & Poems from Nova Scotians (OCLC 50312807, ISBN 978-0-9681-5400-7), and it contains a poem from Charles Bruce selected by Harry as his favourite. It opens: "My favorite poem is 'The Other Side' by my father Charles Bruce". Maybe you already knew this, but I thought it was rather exciting to discover a piece of his writing that I didn't find in the scour. All the best, MediaKyle (talk) 15:02, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you! I was very glad to find a source with so much detail on his career at Sun Life. I'm working on his early life and political career now, Newspapers.com has been very helpful for this.
- I don't think I've heard of that book before. My grandfather always felt Charles was slighted by being left out of most collections of Canadian or even just Atlantic Canadian poetry. Charles' biographer Andrew Wainwright felt the same, and Charles himself reportedly felt this way in the last decade of his life. Harry probably thought it was important to submit a contribution recognizing Charles when possible. I don't think I've ever read 'The Other Side', I wonder which work that was from, or if it was ever even published, as some of his later stuff never was.
- I've found some more writing by Harry as contributions to larger works. I'll share those when I find them again, as I think those books are at the old Bruce farmhouse. GabrielMABruce (talk) 17:47, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
Some updates
edit@MediaKyle Hello, just wanted to mention some things I thought you might be interested in.
I worked with my family and others throughout early/mid August and nominated Harry for the Order of Nova Scotia. I should have done it months back when I first had the idea but was too busy with work. We received confirmation from the Protocol Office that he is on the list of nominees for the 2026 ONS appointments.
I've also made an interesting find at the old Bruce farmhouse. I've been trying to make a catalogue of all the antiques and family heirlooms we have and I was taking a second look at an old, little handmade wood box, likely for writing implements or glasses. I was checking for inscriptions and there was "HT" carved on the underside of the lid. I was a little perplexed at who "HT" would have been until later in the day when I realized it was probably written on there by a young Henry Marshall Tory! He went to school in Port Shoreham from 1869-1879 and was childhood best friends and later brother-in-law of Will Bruce, Charles' father. I've got to update Henry's wiki page using his biography at some point, but I still need to finish up his brother James. There's so much history in this little community between the Tory brothers and the Bruce writers, I feel like there should be a heritage marker or some interpretive panels somewhere in the area.
Hope you're doing well! - Gabe GabrielMABruce (talk) 18:37, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hi there, good to hear from you. That's wonderful news regarding the Order of Nova Scotia, I can't wait to see the postnominal on his article. Based on my understanding of posthumous nominations, you must have just hit the deadline too. Is there a ceremony to attend for this? Perhaps we might be able to get a creative commons photograph...
- That's an interesting anecdote about Henry Marshall Tory, the article doesn't say he went to school in Port Shoreham actually - I didn't think he had as much of a Nova Scotian connection as the rest of the Torys. I'll be interested to read more about him when you expand it. It's a shame we don't really have anything connecting that box to him other than the initials... I really like the picture of the typewriter on the articles about Charles and Harry but the box would be a little harder to justify. Something for the Tory / Bruce Museum someday maybe.
- On the topic of local history, I thought you might like to read my latest article, about the 1932 Shubenacadie bank robbery. It's a pretty ridiculous story and I'm happy with what I managed to come up with here. Might nominate it for GA later.
- As an aside, if you'd ever like to chat more about Nova Scotia history or other non-Wikipedia topics, you can find me under my username in the Wikipedia Discord server if you use that platform, or you can also email me if you'd like through EmailUser and then I can reply to you normally. No one's actually going around policing user talk pages or anything but technically we're not supposed to be "too social" on here (WP:FORUM). Not that we're doing anything wrong now, just wanted to throw that out there. All the best, MediaKyle (talk) 20:34, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, we got the nomination in just in time! Also, to clarify, it isn't a sure thing he'll get the ONS, I just meant they accepted the nomination for consideration. I feel pretty confident about his chances though, won't know if he gets it or not for almost a year. If he does get it there will be a ceremony at Government House, and I can get someone to take a photo for me.
- Henry M Tory grew up in Port Shoreham until the age of 15 or so, like his brothers until they moved to Guysborough (James C was 17 and John A was 11). There's a passage of writing from him in his biography where he talks about his boyhood in Port Shoreham, and particularly the importance of his friendship with Will Bruce. I thought it was really neat when I stumbled across it earlier this summer.
- I agree it would be hard to draw a definitive link between H M Tory and the box, I can't even say for certain what it was used for. I feel pretty confident that they are his initials though. H M Tory could have given it to his sister Sarah sometime during his life, or maybe he left it to her after he died. He could have even given it to Will when they were still children, probably will remain a mystery.
- That bank robbery made for an interesting read! Any idea what Boutilier went on to do, if anything? It inspires me to make a similar article on an attempted bank robbery in Antigonish, reportedly the first armed bank robbery in Canada. Was in 1887 by a man named Stanley Steele (great bank robber name) from Boylston. Might do that when I get the time.
- I almost reached out by email when I was doing the ONS stuff, but yes I'm happy to connect on discord, I use it a lot. GabrielMABruce (talk) 05:14, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
