Happy New Year + WikiCup
Hi Cwmhiraeth
First of all, wishing you and yours a very happy new year and hoping it's a great 2022 for you!
Also excited to see the WikiCup back, not sure if I'll be able to replicate my podium finish from last time, but it's certainly fun to take part. On a technical point, I see you've set up a table at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2021 but wondering if you meant to do that at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2022? Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 11:00, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: Happy New Year to you too. I should have set it up for 2022. Would you be able to move it? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:50, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Sure, no problem. I've rectified it by copying your table over from the 2021 page to the 2022 page and then restoring the final table from the 2021 competition on its page for posterity, since that's what has been done in previous years. Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 12:51, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: Thanks. I find moves are very unforgiving, no preview available, and its easy to find you've forgotten the subpages or got the first part of the string wrong. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:00, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup + Happy New Year
Hi! I am new to WikiCup, and have few queries:
- Are articles nominated for FA or GA days/months before January 1, but promoted on/after January 1 eligible?
- I might be a little foolish here, but, can I use the GA reviews I am doing for January backlog drive for claiming points in the WikiCup as well. I am presuming the answer to be 'no', but ...
Thanks! and Happy New Year! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 15:32, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Kavyansh.Singh: The answer to both these queries is yes. Happy New Year to you and I hope you enjoy taking part in the WikiCup. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 16:19, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! definitely! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 16:24, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
DYK for Stolonica socialis
On 3 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Stolonica socialis, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that orange sea grapes contain substances that have a cytotoxic effect? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Stolonica socialis. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Stolonica socialis), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Welcome to the 2022 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2022 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. Any questions on the rules or on anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:36, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Barn owl
Would you be able to add cites for the "Synonyms" in the taxonomy box and add a "how" to the sentence "The shape of the tail is a means of distinguishing the barn owl from typical owls when seen in the air."? LittleJerry (talk) 22:58, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Cwmhiraeth. Can I claim points for stuff promoted/featured on the MP in january but before I signed up for the WC? Eddie891 Talk Work 14:19, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Ineligible Cup submissions
If I'm not mistaken, these ITN submission (on this contestant's page) are ineligible. They were promoted before January 1, and were also merely nominated (and not updated) by the contestant. —Bloom6132 (talk) 01:50, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
- Also applies to the GAR submission. —Bloom6132 (talk) 01:52, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
- I am working through the log and have rejected a few already. There are a tremendous number of submissions at the start of the contest. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:14, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
- My email can be ignored. Should have come to your talk page first lol. SpencerT•C 07:02, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
DYK for Luidia savignyi
On 11 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Luidia savignyi, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Luidia savignyi. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Luidia savignyi), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Regarding the WikiCup
Hey there, Cwh—Chwhm—Chrwm—Chwem—Chemw—Wcmrcw—Cmrwr—Cwmwre—cWmrth—Cthrmr—Chrtmr—Cwmrthr—Mrcthr—Cmthrth—Creatrh—Chrtmt—ah, forget it.
I would ask this at the WikiCup talk page but it's getting pretty cluttered with large discussions. Does this count towards 5 points? Like, it's a super small review, but there's nothing to review. It's a super obscure video game with little commentary written by an experienced editor. I also didn't review it with WikiCup intention, I just did a quid pro quo and then thought, "Oh right. Points!" Panini!🥪 16:57, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Panini!: That will be fine. Claim away. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:58, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Revdel request: potential libel
See this diff. Named person being described as a paedo. I have reverted for now but it should be expunged.
As a general principle, should there not be a "duty administrator" box for such requests? I suggest that WP has grown too much to depend on readers being able to identify a friendly local admin and hope that they are 'in'. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:41, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Done. You are probably right about having a duty administrator, but perhaps reporting it at AN would suffice. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:46, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. I guess I see ANI as the place where a judgement call is required, with possibly some discussion and evidence of 'due process'. Reports like this one, a blatant BLP vio, just need a dispassionate eye to decide "is it obviously true? if yes, RD; if not, advise reference to ANI". I'll leave the idea with you to brew. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 11:04, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
And again (diff). Might be wise to put a temporary IP block for a few days? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 16:12, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Done, and I've protected Almere and Ali B for a week. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:09, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
Hi Cwmhiraeth. I hope this finds you well - and thank you for all the hard work you have been doing on DYK and elsewhere. It is much appreciated. I'm wondering if you can help me. The above article appeared on DYK today, and the bot has attempted to put the DYK tag for that on the article's talk page. However its markup hasn't worked, and the tag does not appear. Please could you sort that for us? Thank you. Storye book (talk) 22:59, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Storye book: Thank you for your kind words. Actually, I am pretty incompetent technically and you would do better to ask BlueMoonset or theleekycauldron. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:46, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, join the club! Will do. Storye book (talk) 12:13, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

Wikicup history log
My FA pass at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/It's Elementary: Talking About Gay Issues in School/archive1 didn't appear in the Wikicup log - not sure if you need to know that. Oddly enough, the same article wasn't added to that log when it became a GA in the last Wikicup. SL93 (talk) 14:29, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- @SL93: I review the submissions when they appear in the log, but do not if they don't appear there. There was a problem with FAs appearing there in last year's contest, but I thought it had been sorted out. Apparently not. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:27, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- It looks like it. There is also Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/SLAPP Suits/archive1. SL93 (talk) 20:58, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello mistake
I messaged theLeekyCauldron but this may require an admin. I screwed up a DYK and cannot figure how to fix. When I revert, I cannot enter the project a second time, it says already entered.
Can you help me with my jumbled nomination on DYK. {{Template:Did you know nominations/Louis Micheels House}} Bruxton (talk) 16:44, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

DYK
Hello Cwmhiraeth I do not know where to go with an issue regarding an article I started. I saw that you are active in DYK and I was hoping you could look at this issue. I had an article at DYK yesterday and someone used a {{WP:G6}} to delete the article and then recreate it. I put a message on the editor's page, and they have ignored the message. I say ignored because I have waited almost a full day and they are active on Wikipedia but not answering my question. Thanks in advance. And thanks for being a part of DYK-it has been fun to participate in the process. Bruxton (talk) 00:01, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Bruxton: I am not the best person to deal with this as I am pretty useless with regards to technical matters. I first thought the deleter had made a mistake and reversed his action, but on further thoughts, I see the article was moved to a new title, and deleting the old page may just have been part of the move process. I see the article now exists and has a DYK tag on its talk page, so what further action do you require? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:19, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. It is likely an improper use of a speedy deletion. The editor endorses the use of speedy with a banner on their talk page. In my short time here I have made many page moves and none have required a speedy deletion. I have used the G7 tag twice to remove items that I had created. A normal page move does not require a deletion. What I do not like is a deleted page showing up in my articles created and the editor has made no attempt to engage in dialogue after I posted my concern on their talk page. Bruxton (talk) 14:48, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Agreed, the move process should not have involved a speedy deletion. As for your articles created record, I'm afraid I do not know what, if anything, can be done. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:45, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for all you do. I have enjoyed working on the encyclopedia so far. The fact that anyone can edit is incredible - and it also comes with some chaff. Bruxton (talk) 20:05, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Oregon POTD
Hi Cwmhiraeth
Just curious about this one: Template:POTD/2022-02-14 - where did you get the text from? I can't see the part from "the upper panel represents commerce" onwards anywhere in the linked article, or in the picture description. Following your request to help out, I've been trying to look through a few of them to make sure the texts are cited in the articles, but not sure where to look for this one! Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 10:56, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: It comes from the Seal of Oregon. I think it is helpful to the POTD viewer to know what the symbols represent. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:06, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oh I see, thanks. Given that some of the text is found in that article, I've added it as a second bolded blurb so that we remain compliant with the guidelines we agreed last year at WP:POTD/G#Writing the blurb. I guess it's a bit unusual to have to targets at a POTD, but since we do it at DYK and OTD already I wouldn't think it too problematic. If you object, we can discuss it further I guess. Cheers and enjoy your weekend. — Amakuru (talk) 15:38, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- OK, that seems good. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:18, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

You are invited to URFA/2020, a working group reviewing featured articles promoted between 2004 and 2015. An article that you nominated for FA status, Horse-fly, has been marked as "Satisfactory" by two editors, meaning that they believe the article meets the featured article criteria. Can you check the article and determine if the article meets the FA criteria? If it does, please mark it as "Satisfactory" on WP:URFA/2020B. If you have concerns about the article, we hope that you will fix it up or post your concerns on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, please go to the URFA/2020 talk page or ping me. Thanks for your help and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 15:16, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for marking horse-fly as satisfactory. I noticed that there are other articles on URFA/2020 that you nominated. Can you also look at some of the other ones and ensure they are also satisfactory? Feel free to post on the URFA/2020 talk page or ping me if you have any questions. Thanks for your help and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 15:43, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- They are all on my watch list and I do keep an eye on them, but there's always a tendency to go downhill I suppose. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:20, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- Reviewers at URFA/2020 are always excited when an editor indicates that they watchlist their nominations, as those articles are less likely to have deteriorated. A goal of URFA/2020 is to determine which FAs have been abandoned because their nominator doesn't edit anymore and no one is taking care of them. If you indicate that you are watchlisting your nominations at URFA/2020, it lets future reviews know that they are probably in good shape and also who to ping if there are concerns or questions about the article. Z1720 (talk) 22:11, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

... for this change. I agree it might have been my mistake; apologies for that. On another note, it is amazing how much work needs to be done by an admin while making that final prep-to-queue move! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 12:56, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
- Ultimately, the admin is responsible for the accuracy of what appears on the main page, while the prep builder does not have the same responsibilities. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:26, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Elysia timida
On 2 March 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Elysia timida, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the sea slug Elysia timida (example pictured) absorbs its colouration from its algae-based diet? March thanks
Thank you for this beauty, for working last-minute-miracles in queues, and all-helpfulness! Music if you like. Prayer for Ukraine continued. We plan the Stainer piece scheduled and cancelled in 2020 again, but now the conductor has COVID. So also the other, - as soon as rehearsals resumed, they are interrupted. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:35, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
- I see celandines here, but is the pinkish flower which I don't recognise called pilewort? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:22, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- The yellows are called "lesser celandines or pilewort", says the article (and I chose the shorter one), the pinkies are corydalis solida.
- The Prayer is on the Main page, finally + new flowers (well, new white, same yellow) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:09, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- Bach's No. 1 today - will sing Stainers chorale 3 April --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:55, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Could you deal with the IPA tags before Eleonore Schönborn appears on the main page? Thanks. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:49, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
- I don't have the slightest idea, sorry. My one and only attempt was to fix Buxtehude's , and after some edit warring we realised I was trying German and the other Danish. The must be other people Eleonore, Schön (cantata title! - I think it's in the hymn) and Born (which rhymes with Dorn and Zorn). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:54, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.
These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Is it possible for you to unprotect this page? On the talk page, there are 3 editors who have agreed that one editor is committing WP:OR and I have alerted this user of the WP:AC/DS of this area.
There are many edits that are necessary to make given the discovery of lots of information for fixing this inaccurate article.
If disruption resumed after unprotection, then I can file a report on WP:ARE. Thanks. TolWol56 (talk) 10:43, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Wiki-cup question!
Hi Cwmhiraeth! I have a question regarding List of international goals scored by Ian Rush. I was not the FL nominator, but I did "adopt" the nomination after the nominator requested someone to take over (Special:Diff/1076144460/1076292003). I now have 69.4% authorship in the list (). It has been promoted as a FL. Would it be fine for me to claim points, or would it be against the spirit of the game WikiCup? Thanks! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 10:00, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Kavyansh.Singh: It will be fine for you to claim for it as you have done significant work in bringing it to featured list status. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:24, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 11:27, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

You commented out my DYK submission for How Civil Wars Start—I received credit from DYKUpdateBot for the article after I, umm, completely blew up the defunct article and rewrote it from scratch adopted the failed nomination. Does that not count? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 06:35, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- Yes it does. It's not apparent from the talk page of the article that you were going to receive a credit for it, although I do agree that the credit was merited. Anyway, I'll comment it in again. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:18, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
WikiCup
Hi, Cwmhiraeth-- I'm afraid I'm just not feeling up to editing as of late, and will have to withdraw from the WikiCup. Not sure how to go about doing it. Could you advise? Thanks, Eddie891 Talk Work 22:56, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

Question for you
Hi, Cw - it's been a while!! Do you think the following tags in the lead are warranted? I need a 3rd opinion from an editor I trust as having a good understanding of tree of life stuff, a bit of common sense relative to genetics, and the differences between ancestral breeds with no documented pedigrees vs recognized modern breeds. I will add that almost every single sentence in the article is cited. The article was promoted to GA back in 2019 by FunkMonk, but it has since been challenged, and I subsequently made substantial updates.
The ancestral crosses of bulldogs and terriers were known by different aliases, such as the Patched Fighting Terrier, Staffordshire Pit-dog, Brindle Bull, and Bull-and-Terrier, which can be confusing relative to the modern Staffordshire Bull Terrier's brief history.[1][verification needed] Those same crosses were also called half-and-halfs and half-breds but were more commonly known as the bull and terrier, which was not a breed but the beginning of several breeds.[2][disputed – discuss]
An article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) states that the early history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier "is identical to the Bull Terrier which was a cross between a Bulldog and a Black and Tan Terrier".[3] [disputed – discuss] It describes the breed as the result of deliberately crossing "a Bull Terrier (itself a mix of a Bulldog and a Black and Tan Terrier) and a smaller terrier (possibly a Manchester Terrier or a White Terrier)."
Thanks in advance! Atsme 💬 📧 23:24, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Atsme: As you say, long time no see. For a start, what article are we discussing here? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:12, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Bull and terrier which is directly related. A merge was proposed last year - B&t into SBT. Atsme 💬 📧 08:42, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- I removed one unnecessary tag. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:41, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you, CW. I would very much appreciate your opinion for validation purposes, (totally not designed to trick you into a collaboration that I know your time won't allow). I'm of the mind that Purebred dogs, formerly a stand alone article that was informally merged into Dog breed, should have remained a standalone article, so I asked another admin to help me with the round-robin move (scered I'd screw something up). Science has brought so much more information to light relative to genetics and ancestral origins that it warrants a stand alone article, IMO. As several of our oldest and largest dog breed registries have opined, there is confusion about the ancestral beginnings of modern purebred dogs, much of which is conflated and taken out of context. The more one digs into the research, the easier it is to see how things are misinterpreted, and taken out of context relative to the era vs modern times. We are also dealing with the occasional Use-mention distinction issues that crop up, and CIR issues that arise when dog breed enthusiasists pick-up a book or two from Pets Mart or Amazon and perpetuate the misinformation cycle. There are also far too many people who rely on visual identification of dogs which explains part of the issues we're facing with BSL. Atsme 💬 📧 23:22, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- It seems reasonable to have the purebred dogs as a separate article. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:09, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Ineligible Cup submission
If I'm not mistaken, the Bjarni Tryggvason ITN submission (on this contestant's page) is ineligible. They were correctly credited for nominating the article for ITN, but they did not make a single edit to update the article for ITN (which the article history shows). —Bloom6132 (talk) 05:28, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
- This has happened a couple of times before, with people nominating news items but not editing the article. I usually allow the submission as being within the spirit of the rules, not wanting to discourage people from nominating articles. The points they score this way are not usually important in the overall run of things. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:31, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
- Given that this contestant is currently occupying the second-last qualifying place, with few points separating those who will barely qualify and those who will be eliminated, this is likely to have a major impact on the "overall run of things". —Bloom6132 (talk) 16:24, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
New administrator activity requirement
The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
- Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
- Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

What a treat!
It was good to see American paddlefish on the main page today. I was reminded of it by the lovely, hard working Gerda Arendt. It also reminded me of the now-extinct Chinese paddlefish, so I started updating some of the information on that article, and in doing so discovered some contradictory information in the IUCN status. I vaguely recall a discussion about the IUCN Red List in the taxo-box and was hoping your memory was much better than mine, or if such a discussion even existed. The Chinese paddlefish was declared extinct in 2019 (published in 2020) but the IUCN Red List has it listed as Critically Endangered and has not updated their assessment of the species status since 24 October 2009. I'm not sure how the IUCN template is structured and was wondering if it would prove helpful to add a line to include the last assessment date? It seems odd to include the extinct declaration in the lead with an outdated contradictory IUCN Red List status in the infobox. And then I came across this controversial study, and this review article. Your thoughts? Atsme 💬 📧 12:50, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- I will look at it tomorrow. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:35, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- I have had a look and think the lead paragraphs deal adequately with its status. One can see why the IUCN would not wish to list it as extinct when a possibility remained that there might be surviving populations. Critically endangered is better under these circumstances. I'm surprised they haven't reassessed it since 2009 however. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:55, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 May newsletter
The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.
Our top scorers in round 2 were:
Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.
The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

Hello Cwmhiraeth,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 878 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 816 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.

I don't suppose you see a good way to set this up for POTD? It's one of those things where I'm definitely feeling a lack of knowledge.

- @Adam Cuerden: I think your current arrangement for the Dead Sea Scroll picture works fine. I will do a POTD for Trần Nhân Tông for November. I think you have made an excellent job of setting up POTDs for the next few months. I never expected such a brilliant response when I mentioned on Main Page talk that help was needed. Ineligible Cup submissions
If I'm not mistaken, these two ITN submissions (on this contestant's page) are ineligible per the rule: "Articles appearing on recent deaths are eligible for in the news points, subject to the normal requirement for substantial work by the nominator."
They were merely nominated (and not updated) by the contestant. —Bloom6132 (talk) 11:48, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

Hello Cwmhiraeth,
- Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
- Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here.
Barnstars will be awarded.
- TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
- Misc
There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 15399 articles, as of 00:00, 7 June 2026 (UTC), according to DatBot
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. WikiCup 2022 July newsletter
The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.
Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! DYK for Alpheus armatus
On 17 July 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alpheus armatus, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the snapping shrimp Alpheus armatus clears sand from a sea anemone's lair? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alpheus armatus. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Alpheus armatus), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

Hello Cwmhiraeth,
- Backlog status
After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.
Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.
- Coordination
- MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
- Open letter to the WMF
- The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
- TIP - Reviewing by subject
- Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

- New reviewers
- The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

September music
Thank you for promoting SWV 36, among others! The rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and this year was full of music that day, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday, a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto (my brother played in the orchestra), and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Almost too much of a good thing. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:46, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022
Hello Cwmhiraeth,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.
Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.
Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

Suggestions:
- There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
- Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
- Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
- This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.
Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Re: Final result
Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed with your attempt to deny me points that I legitimately earned and claimed within the rules.
I also don't understand why you stated that Chuck Deardorf "did not appear on the main page until after the WikiCup had ended"
. It appeared on the Main Page when the competition ended at midnight, not after (unlike Shane Reed, which was posted 26 minutes later at 00:26 on 1 November 2022 and which I consequently did not claim). It seems like you're doing everything to ensure I won't win. —Bloom6132 (talk) 18:01, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- Here in the UK, the DYK set changes at midnight so Chuck Deardorf did not appear until November 1st. We'll see what Sturmvogel thinks about that one. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 21:14, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
WikiCup 2022 November newsletter
The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is
Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.
During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.
Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.
Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023
Hello Cwmhiraeth,

- Backlog
The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.
- 2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!
Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)
New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js
Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.
Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

About WikiCup and archives
Hello! Happy New Year (even though I'm late for it) and sorry for bothering you.
Since I signed up for this year's WikiCup yesterday, I just wanted to ask you if I followed the correct process, as I haven't seen my data registered on the main page, yet.
Also, may I ask you for advice about adding an archive system to my own talk page, please? As messages keep piling up, I should probably use a bot to organize them, but being a newbie user (kind of), I don't really know how to set it properly...
Thank you!
Oltrepier (talk) 10:54, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- Whoops, I think I've just "invaded" your previous message... Oltrepier (talk) 10:56, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Oltrepier: It's OK. I am just about to add the latest batch of names to the main WikiCup page. As for the talk page archiving, I am not the best person to ask as I periodically have problems with it myself. You can click help on the left side of the page and then use "archiving" as your search term, or ask someone more competent than me. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:02, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- Right, thank you very much! Oltrepier (talk) 11:12, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

The DYK point system for Wikicup
For this DYK when it hits the main page - Somatochlora flavomaculata. 5 points for the DYK, 5 points for being before 2017, 3 points for being created in 2014. I don't know how to calculate the "For every 5 Wikipedias (including the English Wikipedia) on which an article appears as of 31 December 2022, the article is awarded an extra 0.2 times as many points". I was the type of Asperger's student who was very bad at math and needed an IEP. I was hoping that there was a tool I could use. SL93 (talk) 03:48, 8 January 2023 (UTC)
- @SL93: Fortunately, you do not have to do the maths because the scoring bot does it for you. In this case, the article is on 21 different language Wikipedias and so qualifies for 1.8x bonus points. It was created in 2014 and so should get 8 bonus points. (5×1.8)+8 in my reckoning, totalling 17. Let's see what the bot gives it! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:40, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

Question Re:Scoring
Hi, I have a question regarding scoring. I nominated Mercedes-Benz CLK LM for a DYK nomination on the 28th here, does it count for WikiCup? Thanks. X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 23:41, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
Also, I nominated that article for GA and it passed on the 22nd of December, but I think that falls too far outside the 14 day window. X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 23:42, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- @X750: I am afraid it does not qualify for points in either way. It became a GA in 2022 before the 2023 WikiCup started. Only GAs promoted during the Cup can score points but your next GA should count. The article qualified as a DYK solely because it had became a GA, and this is a specific exception mentioned in the rules. You will need to have a DYK for an article you have created or 5x expanded.Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:17, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
- Right, so my DYK from the 28th of December is also invalid, correct? If so I'll remove it from my submissions page. Thank you. X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 16:21, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
- With a DYK, you should not claim until it has appeared on the main page, but in this case, as explained above, the DYK is ineligible for points. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:36, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

@MyCatIsAChonk: Your submission of a DYK for West Side Story (2021 film) is not eligible. See the explanation above. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:56, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

DYK query
Hi Cwmhiraeth. Since you're one of the administrators listed at WP:DYK#Actively involved, I'm wondering if I could get a bit of informal feedback from you on a possible DYK candidate. Do you think Ichirō Hiura#Forfeit losses and suspension for non-compliance with mask rules might be something considered for DYK? Unfortunately, there's no free image available of Hiura and I think that might make it unsuitable for that reason alone, but I was just curious. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:51, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: It does not qualify for DYK because the article was not created nor five-times expanded in the relevant time span (7 days). In this case you have created a new section, but I am afraid this does not make it qualify for DYK. The lack of an image is unimportant. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:00, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- Fair enough. Thanks for taking a look. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:07, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter
So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.
The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included
LunaEatsTuna,
Thebiguglyalien,
Sammi Brie,
Trainsandotherthings,
Lee Vilenski,
Juxlos,
Unexpectedlydian,
SounderBruce,
Kosack,
BennyOnTheLoose and
PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! WikiCup advancements
I tried to log one of Helloheart's DYKs at their WikiCup scoring page, to prevent them from getting eliminated, but it seems that LivingBot doesn't consider those entries in making assessments – could you log the points manually, as it'd be a no-fault advancement to round 2? Thanks in advance :) theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 20:02, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron: I see that the DYK was for Oise amber and would have scored him points allowing him to continue in the contest. I can manually put him back into the WikiCup but if he did not submit the DYK, does he wish to move into the second round? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:44, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- I mean, not sure; I've pinged them here, so they can always weigh in on that. My guess was that they weren't able to find the scoring page, it took me quite a few tries. In any case, there's no harm in it, they wouldn't be bumping someone else out of the next round. If they don't want to play, they'll go out in round 2 instead, no sweat. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 20:47, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.
Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.
Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.
You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.
Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

The Core Contest winners announced
The winners of the 2023 The Core Contest are announced 🎉. We had an amazing set of improvements this year, and the judges (Femke, Aza24 and Casliber) would like to thank everybody who joined and congratulate the winners.
- First place goes to Buidhe for improving The Holocaust; very core, highly relevant; their work on bringing geographical balance to the article puts the topic in a whole different light. We also commend improvements to sourcing and prose
- A close second place goes to Phlsph7 for improving Education from an unstructured jumble into a well-sourced piece of instruction
- Third prize goes to Johnbod for improving Donatello, a near five-fold expansion with great sourcing and fantastic imagery
- A tie for fourth place goes to Thebiguglyalien for improving Crime, for a strong improvement in sourcing
- A tie for fifth place goes to Sammielh for International law, improved by converting contextless listicles into a proper sourced prose
If you wish to start or stop receiving news about The Core Contest, please add or remove yourself from the delivery list. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 20:07, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Great music (in June, I'm behind: three great RMF concerts)! - Last Saturday, a friend played for us at her birthday party, on four instruments including baryton, with family (granddaughters!) and colleagues, from Renaissance to Haydn. - My story today is very personal: the DYK appeared on Wikipedia's 15th birthday, and describes a concert I sang. I was requested to translate the bio into German for a memorial concert ... - see background, and we talked about life and death. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:17, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

New contest! |
|
This month has seen an incredible amount of activity creating high quality content, with 3 FAs, 3 FACs, and a veritable flood of GAs and GANs, not to mention the FLs and FLCs. To help maintain this high level of activity going forward, WikiProject Tree of Life is starting a new monthly rolling contest, inspired by the contest run by WikiProject Military History. This contest should hopefully help incentivize editors to contribute in ways that are less daunting than writing articles that are GA and FA-quality. Even improving articles from stub to start class, or helping other editors by reviewing their work at GAN, FAC, or FLC, gets you points, with bonus points for articles with especially high page views. Make sure to participate in any way you can, and help improve the 'pedia while having fun and winning Barnstars! |

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter
The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.
Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

New pages patrol newsletter
Hello Cwmhiraeth,

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.

The first edition of our new monthly contest had perhaps a little less participation than I hoped for, but it still resulted in a huge amount of content work, mainly focussed on de-stubbing articles on little-known species, although we did also see two GAs for Holozoa and Hypericum perforatum. Overall, over 60 articles were improved, with most going from stubs or redlinks to fully fleshed out articles. The winner this month was Simongraham, who improved 21 articles about spiders, mainly to B and C class, and racked up 70 points, over twice the next highest. Hopefully, we'll continue to see such great work next month, with even more participants and even more articles improved.

The WikiCup has run every year since 2007. With the 2023 contest now concluded, I will be standing down as a judge due to real life commitments, so I hope that another editor will take over running the competition. Please get in touch if you are interested. Next year's competition will hopefully begin on 1 January 2024. You are invited to sign up to participate in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors. It only remains to congratulate our worthy winners once again and thank all participants for their involvement! Vacation pictures offered if you click on songs, and my story today is a DYK hook from 13 years ago OTD: about the great music at one of my churches. Mozart's Requiem to come on Sunday, coupled with Arvo Pärt's Da pacem Domine, - I guess you might come if it was a bit closer. ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:39, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Request for administrator intervention
I won't be surprised if you tell me to go away, that if it were serious enough another admin would have intervened already. But as I don't know if that is really how things work, may I ask you to look at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Disruptive, redundant and unexplained changes to thumbnail sizes by User:Mndata2, please? The real issue is that this editor completely ignores (or possibly doesn't see, as they edit on mobile) any attempts to communicate at their talk page (or indeed at the ANI page). So I'm requesting a temporary block just to get their attention, please? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 10:59, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
