What advice can you give to someone who has never edited anything beyond their own High School papers? --OrangeLemonaide55 (talk) 00:14, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just edit what you want to edit on Wikipedia. There is no pressure! CostalCal (talk) 00:40, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
What advice can you give for spotting an edit that's needed? Articles can be huge! OrangeLemonaide55 (talk) 00:55, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Are you a "citations and data" person who loves the structure, or more of a "flow and clarity" editor who likes making the text sing? CostalCal (talk) 00:57, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm not really sure. I guess a bit of both, but overall I'd have to say probably leaning towards "citations and data" especially in a place like Wikipedia that has thousands of different languages, slangs, and accents. I wouldn't want to dispute anything that makes sense to the intended audience. OrangeLemonaide55 (talk) 12:04, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

NPOL

Hi CostalCal,

I noticed a good number of city councilman articles which I had my eye on were recently reviewed. Thanks for taking care of those. However, WP:NPOL only confers notability to national and state-level elected officials. Local politicians are expected to meet WP:GNG through significant coverage from reliable independent sources. Copy-paste tag (Black Diamond Museum, Angul)

edit

Hello,

I noticed that a copy-paste tag has been added to the article. However, I was unable to identify any material copied from OdishaBytes. A review of the page on CopyPatrol does not highlight any matching text from that source. Additionally, the text flagged there appears to correspond to an earlier version of the article.

The article has since been substantially rewritten to address prior concerns. Based on the current version, I do not see evidence of a copy-paste issue. If there are specific passages of concern, please feel free to point them out.

S4yam (talk) 05:59, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

CostalCal: I have also checked the copyvios where it shows 0.0% similarity between the source and the article.
S4yam (talk) 07:36, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Therefore, I'm removing the {{copy-paste}}tag from the article. S4yam (talk) 10:05, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I had good intentions. I was using my understanding and the automated copyvio checker. My apologies; now I know it isn't efficient. You're in the right! CostalCal (talk) 00:51, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Cagayan Valley and Caraballo ethnolinguistic groups

edit

Pleasant day CostalCal! In regards of the tag on Cagayan Valley and Caraballo ethnolinguistic groups, I wanted to clarify that this was a content split from Igorot people, aiming to better organize unrelated ethnic groups. Some ethnic groups were mistakenly added to the Igorot people group and thus, I created a new article, splitting those other ethnic groups from the said article, and moving the information of those ethnic groups to the new article. I have now provided the required back-attribution on the article's Talk page. I’ve also added before a demographic data to expand the scope. Please let me know if the article is still in violation of Wikpedia's rules. Thanks for the oversight and have a nice day. MultilingualIgorot (talk) 06:01, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Subspecies of Phasianus colchicus

edit

Hi CostalCal,

you have placed a tag on the wiki-page which I have created claiming that "This article or section may have been copied and pasted from another location, possibly in violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy. Please review https://cdn.greensoft.mn/uploads/users/366/files/MongolianRedListBirds.pdf (Copyvios) and remedy this by editing this article to remove any non-free copyrighted content and attributing free content correctly, or flagging the content for deletion."

I would like to first point out that, as you can see from my extensive reference list, I have cited all content properly. This includes the Mongolian Redlist, which is cited on all places where information has been taken from the Redbook (reference [178]). As in Mongolia there are only two small areas where Phasianus colchicus occurs, it is easy to locate the two places where I refer to it: in Phasianus colchicus hagenbecki and in Phasianus colchicus pallasi. The exact phrases taken from the Redbook all concern places of occurrence, i.e. pure data: "(Nariin River, Shiveet, Shaazgai Aral, Ih Aral, Arlyn Surguuli, Sharguu, Temeen Khashaa Övöljöö, Shine Aral, Shar Aral, Shar Guu, Bor Mod Aral, Shine Övöljöö, Olgoi, Baga Aral, Tuukh Aral, Tsagaan Tokhoi, Buljim Aral, Bujin Aral, Ih Tuimert, Gakhait Aral, Möög, Oltrig Aral)- from Ölgii town through southern Khar-Us lake to Zereg depression (Zereg sum); Achit lake (delta of Böhmörön River), and at Uvs Lake the delta of Tes and Torkholig (Torgalyk) rivers." for hagenbecki, and "It breeds in the river valleys of Nömrög, Degee, Altan, Khalkh, Guu, Azarga, Shine, Emgentei, Huiten, Vaaran, Uizen, Torkho, Hengereg, and Avdrant rivers (Khalkh river valley through Ih Khayngan), southwest to the Chinese border." for pallasi and one habitate: "sandy soil with willow trees, Caragana sp. bushes, tall and dense reeds, grooves of birch, mixed trees with birch, poplar, Sea Buckthorn and dense and tall bushes.". In all three cases you can see reference [178].

It is scientific practise that one can cite from books if the references are given and if the citations are restricted to phrases, a few sentences, or a short paragraph. In this case it is simply a list of occurrences in each case (i.e. three sentences, from pages 114/115 of the Mongolian RedBook in my reference, on page 50 in your link). The RedBook itself also uses citations to other work. Besides this, it is entirely beyond the point of any RedBook if the information from it cannot be cited.

In this case, I can simply delete the lists of occurrences, if you insist. However, I would like to understand what the basis for this would be, i.e. what is the rule for citations in wikipedia (how many words is one allowed to cite from a source).

Kind regards, RedSiskin (talk) 06:27, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi CostalCal,
I have removed the lists of occurrences in hagenbecki and in pallasi from the wikipedia page. I hope that violation stamp can be removed asap. I'm still convinced that even in the previous version nothing was violated, as it fully complied with the fair use rules. I find it, however, quite amusing that in the very copyright violation tag shown prominently at the beginning of the wikipedia page, there is a link where the entire book, the copyrights of which the article is supposed to violate, is publicly available for download as a PDF. Perhaps I don't have to understand the logic behind this.
Kind Regards, RedSiskin (talk) 18:35, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Checking for Copyvio tags on WP:New Pages Patrol is faulty, sorry. CostalCal (talk) 18:39, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Copy-paste tag (GCW Collective)

edit

Hi there, I'd like to address something in regards to the GCW Collective page. I noticed you put a copy-paste tag on there but as I have sourced all information from reliable sources and considering the section in question you are referring to, (Joey Janela's Spring Break: Clusterf**k Forever), I would like to say that adding results that have been officially confirmed by the promotion and on official sources more than likely does not fit within the standards of what can be described as a copyright violation. Also, the article you linked does not exist. Unknownuser45266 (talk) 11:53, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

My bad. Now I realize CopyPatrol is faulty. I understand I should know better with a decent amount of experience. I really shouldn't have tagged the article. CostalCal (talk) 01:01, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @CostalCal. You've added a tag about copy-paste to Tell_Aushariye. There is a citation to a letter by Shalmaneser III with references to the Oracc Archive. A citation with reference is fair use. Looking through your talk page, this is now the sixth message today regarding you adding this tag inappropriately. On the article Worldwide Revival Pt.1 you added the tag and linked a website which contains no resemblance to the Wikipedia article at all, aside from them both having the same topic of interest. —JavaJourney (talk | contribs) 15:07, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

It is only my third. I am using CopyPatrol. A Wikipedia tool that checks for copyright violations. I am an WP:Assume Good Faith editor. Copy-pasting on Wikipedia is looked down upon in the WP:New Pages Patrol even if you cite a source. CostalCal (talk) 16:16, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I know what you're doing, I'm just letting you know that you've been adding the tag to pages where it shouldn't be added. Being in good faith is no excuse to disregard repetitive errors, and please do not add this tag unless you have a justification to. ...Also, ignore what I said previously about this being the sixth message today. King Adeyemi Letter To The British Empire copy right

edit

Hello, so i saw you put a warning on this wikipedia page This article or section may have been copied and pasted from another location, possibly in violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy. Please review https://archive.org/stream/historyofyorubas00john/historyofyorubas00john_djvu.txt (Copyvios) and remedy this by editing this article to remove any non-free copyrighted content and attributing free content correctly, or flagging the content for deletion. Please be sure that the supposed source of the copyright violation is not itself a Wikipedia mirror. (April 2026)

I read the wikipedia's copyright policy, i'm not sure how this is copyrighted? for starters the letter has been published for over 125 years now. the publisher, has also been dead for over 120 years. the material isnt copyrighed either, how is this different than the contents of the letter of george washingtons fairwell? i also put two hyperlinks that you can read it on archive, and on the nyc journal it was published to. so can you explain more on why this was put on the page? 'Copy-Paste' tag on Alexander Potts

Hello, I saw the copy/paste tag you added to the Alexander Potts article that I drafted. His CV is cited as a source. I used it as a source but it's not copy/pasted as such. This article has gone through extensive reviews (it was rejected twice: first for not enough citations beyond his CV and the second time for too many citations) and this issue was never brought up. "Lead too short"

edit

Hi there, and thank you for all your help with NPP! I'm reaching out because I noticed you recently tagged Maintenance Artist with {{lead too short}}, which may not have been the right tag. This tag should be placed when the lead section is much shorter than what is recommended, relative to the length of the article. In this case, the whole article consisted of a single sentence, so the lead (one sentence) is adequate to summarize the main points in the article. I think what you were trying to get at is that this is a stub article that needs to be expanded. In that case, I recommend using the StubSorter userscript. This always allows you to tag stub articles within specific stub categories (e.g., American country singers) so editors can more easily find them. I hope this makes sense! Let me know if you have any follow-up questions. Take care, Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 01:13, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just as a heads-up, Akifamzar turned out to be a sockpuppet who was creating tons of spammy AI-generated articles about non-notable music/musicians based on bogus sources like artistnewsdaily.com and malaysiaentertainment.asia. I know you reviewed them in good faith, but it's a good reminder to look at things extra carefully in topic areas that are susceptible to spam. In my opinion it's also generally not a good idea to review articles on request, both because it's unfair to let people skip the queue and because they often have an ulterior motive, like trying to get the article in the Google Search results for promotional purposes.
