Quick look

Hi Brian. I've been developing Omayra Sánchez a great deal lately; is there any chance you can browse through it for ten minutes or so and tell me how much more work the prose needs? I realize it's not yet FA quality of course, but I'd like a pretty clear gauge for the amount of work I still have left to do. My goal is for this to be on the Main Page in November, so I'm in no hurry to bring it to FA, and I still have a number of options to consider, including something like this heartbreaking video. ceranthor 21:07, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Wow, what a subject, and what a video. I will definitely look at this, though it may be a few days before I have proper time. Brianboulton (talk) 22:54, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes, the Armero tragedy has become close to my heart. Omayra defies words. And don't feel obliged to rush. There's plenty of time before November. Thanks. :) ceranthor 21:57, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
I will try to look at it ASAP - hellish weekend. ceranthor 04:42, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the comments so far. ceranthor 13:24, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
I am carrying out a full peer review, with a little ce on the way. The review will be posted shortly. Brianboulton (talk) 13:46, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks so much for all the help. I think I've fixed everything. Let me know if not! ceranthor 20:31, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Norman Selfe peer review

Hi Brian,

I've now completed my run through of all the comments you left at Wikipedia:Peer review/Norman Selfe/archive1! You mentioned you had more comments to come but not until the first set were addressed. Sincerely, Wittylama 04:00, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

The Reviewer Barnstar
For your diligent and detailed peer-reviewing of Norman Selfe, thanks. Wittylama 02:32, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Brian,
Given that you're so good at reviewing, and appear to have so much spare time (!) that you're even helping me respond to the FA comments for Norman Selfe, I don't suppose you'd be willing and able to give Florence Violet McKenzie a once-over? She's a very similar situation to Norman - she's a fascinating lady all about providing technical education to Sydney and especially to Women. Also, most of her article is built on content Freyne in the Dictionary of Sydney too.
She's currently a GA, and I'd like to see if you think we are in striking distance of nominating her for FA as well? Sincerely, Wittylama 02:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, but no. I like to help where I can, but I have to ration my time among competing demands, and I think I've given you a fair whack. Brianboulton (talk) 10:59, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
Yep, and fair enough. You have indeed given me great assistance already. Thanks again, Wittylama 11:45, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

(Hopefully) Quick request

Fender is coming along nicely at FAC, but currently lacks a source review. Is there any chance you could oblige? Thanks! Sarastro1 (talk) 11:27, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Done. Perhaps you'll do the same for me when Kenneth Widmerpool comes up. Brianboulton (talk) 15:59, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, and that would be a pleasure. Sarastro1 (talk) 19:07, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

H. C. McNeile

Hi Brian, Many thanks for the note on KW: my pleasure to comment further. I know you are incredibly busy on a number of things—all in subjects both worthy and worthwhile—but is there a chance you would have an opportunity to go down market and comment on the creator of an unspeakable public school bully with odious political views? Do not worry if you're overburdened with your other commitments or really can't stomach the subject—all entirely understandable. Many thanks! - SchroCat (talk) 14:55, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

That sounds like terrific fun and I wouldn't want to miss it. I will make it my next "long" review; just give me a day or two. Brianboulton (talk) 15:10, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
That's wonderful—thank you very much indeed. No rush at all on this; whenever you are ready for it! Thanks again. - SchroCat (talk) 18:36, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks again for your comments at PR for this. I've had a sort out and had to drop two of the images: one for being PD in the UK but not in the US (the cig card) and one for having no date or attribution (the du Maurier image). The rest were all sortable. Thanks again - SchroCat (talk) 17:33, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Special report: Examining the popularity of Wikipedia articles
On February 12, 2012, news of Whitney Houston's death brought 425 hits per second to her Wikipedia article, the highest peak traffic on any article since at least January 2010. It is broadly known that Wikipedia is the sixth most popular website on the Internet, but the English Wikipedia now has over 4 million articles and 29 million total pages. Much less attention has been given to traffic patterns and trends in content viewed.

"Push the Button"

Hello! As a previous FAC reviewer of Push the Button (Sugababes song), if you have time would you mind commenting on the most recent FAC? Any input is appreciated, as the discussion has gone a bit stale Till 07:36, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello again. Can you please take another look at the discussion, I have been told that after 5 weeks of copyediting the article, the prose is still not good enough despite addressing all reviewers' concerns. Till 23:57, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Peer review/Divine (performer)/archive1

This has been on WP:PR for a couple of weeks or more without attracting any review comments. It's been put together with care, is very detailed and looks worthy of attention. Although it's by no means a topic area that I have much expertise in, I'm going to review it on some obvious things like prose and sources. It would be nice if someone more knowledgeable would also pick it up and add their comments. Brianboulton (talk) 00:48, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Re: Image conundrum

Hi Brian, I checked and while the sourcing could be a little clearer, the picture is cropped from this one which was published in a book about and by the War Resisters' International. The OTRS tag means that the OTRS volunteers were satisifed that the photo was donated by the copyright holder, so I think it is fine. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:20, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Many thanks. What I would really like to do is a further crop, into something approaching a head and shoulders portrait. I take it that this would be OK? Brianboulton (talk) 10:08, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
That would be fine and I made File:Photo 7 Council 1938, WRI George Lansbury head crop.jpg - is this what you wanted? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 12:02, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
Absolutely; compare the lead images here (your crop) and here; yours is far more suitable for the infobox. Again, many thanks. Brianboulton (talk) 14:40, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
You are very welcome - glad it was what you had in mind. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:39, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Question

Regarding Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Priyanka Chopra/archive1. I was following another FAC, and when points came up there, I tried to make similar fixes here before they were noticed. Now shouldn't I address yours and other issues as they come up? That will lead to even more edits. BollyJeff | talk 13:31, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

I think you are perhaps missing my point. I was concerned about the number of edits made before any review comments had appeared at the FAC. My plea (echoed I notice by Maralia) is that you should in general let the article rest while the review takes place, except of course when responding to reviewers' comments. I hope that's clear now. Brianboulton (talk) 14:12, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited George Lansbury, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Daily Herald (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ  Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Carmen

Hi Brian, you'll soon notice I'm sure that I've scheduled Carmen for 3rd March (anniversary of first performance) if this is OK with you. I don't see that this will stand in the way of Messiah appearing as TFA later in March, incidentally. BencherliteTalk 11:52, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

No problem. I'll check out the blurb and the article generally, when I have a chance. Brianboulton (talk) 15:21, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Actually, would you mind if I rested Carmen for another time? Battle of the Bismarck Sea will have its 70th anniversary on 2nd-4th March; it was taken through FAC very recently with the aim of getting TFA this year, and I rather got in the way of that by scheduling so early... BencherliteTalk 09:35, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
No problem - schedule Carmen whenever you have a free spot; the 138th anniversary of the premiere isn't especially notable. I've done the blurb and cropped the image, so it's ready to go when you are. Brianboulton (talk) 09:43, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Marvellous. I spotted the cropped photo, which was a good idea too. Thanks for everything. BencherliteTalk 09:46, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Main page appearance: Carmen

This is a note to let the main editors of Carmen know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on March 3, 2013. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/March 3, 2013. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegates Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you can change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Célestine Galli-Marié as Carmen

Carmen is an opera in four acts by the French composer Georges Bizet, first performed on 3 March 1875. It was not at first particularly successful and Bizet knew nothing of its later success as he died before its initial run was concluded. The opera tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naive soldier seduced by the fiery gypsy Carmen (first played by Célestine Galli-Marié, pictured in costume). José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen's love to the glamorous toreador Escamillo after which José kills her in a jealous rage. The depictions of proletarian life, immorality and lawlessness, and the tragic outcome, broke new ground in French opera, and after the premiere most reviews were critical. Carmen initially gained its reputation outside France, and was not revived in Paris until 1883; thereafter it rapidly acquired celebrity at home and abroad, and continues to be one of the most frequently performed operas. The music of Carmen has been widely acclaimed for its brilliance of melody, harmony, atmosphere and orchestration, and for the skill with which Bizet represented musically the emotions and suffering of his characters. Chandra Levy

Currently, it is a Good Article. Since you have done a Peer Review on it a few years back, it's time for either a possible re-assessment or a major bold contribution to this article. Because suspects of Levy's murder are still living, BLP may apply to information about them. Also, 2013 hearings are not mentioned in the article outside the lede paragraph. Therefore, I've addressed my concerns about the lede to one of recent contributors of the article. --George Ho (talk) 16:52, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

OTD Rinaldo

On the Main page: Rinaldo! (For opera,I picked something else.) - Messiah: in the TFA blurb, I accented a bit more what Handel did with the text, example: "resurrection of Jesus" is a short recitative, not really worth mentioning, "resurrection of the dead" most of part III, - please look and adjust, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:06, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Marion Coates Hanson

Mentioned in the Lansbury article you are working on, interesting lady from Middlesborough. Is there an article for her (I thought under a married name perhaps) I could work on? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.144.116.2 (talk) 23:16, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Marion Coates Hansen was an early supporter of women's suffrage, whose role in the movement has been somewhat overshadowed by that of the Pankhurst family and other high profile figures. There is no WP article for her at present, which is a notable omission. When I have finished working on George Lansbury I intend to create a stub for Hansen, and perhaps will develop it into a full article later.
My work on Lansbury has highlighted two other prominent women who currently lack WP articles. One is Jane Cobden, an important figure in the struggle of women's rights to serve in local government in the generation preceding the main suffrage campaigns. I intend to create a full-length article for this lady (daughter of Richard Cobden). The other woman is Lansbury's daughter Dorothy, a birth control pioneer and founder of the Workers' Birth Control Group. Maybe you would be interested in helping to create these article? Or anyone else who happens to be reading this page
I've been mooching around suffragist articles recently and I came across mention of Jane Cobden, who must have been a very spirited and determined lady, for whom I've now created an article with some help from another editor. Still lots more to do though, obviously. George Ponderevo (talk) 21:56, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
That is fantastic. I have quite a few relevant sources on Cobden, and will chip in when I can to expand the article. At present I am trying to polish up the George Lansbury article with a view to a peer review next week, then I should have a little time. Brianboulton (talk) 22:16, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
