Three Proposals Made to WikiMedia ZA

edit
  1. Adopting the Renewable Assignment approach in academic communities to develop digital capability among first-generation university students.
  2. Encouraging Ed techies of Sub Saharan Africa to become Wikipedians in residence in Schools and Universities
  3. Mentoring Community media practitioners to create articles in vernacular languages. Partnering with the association of Independent publishers (AIP) we will set up a Wikipedia mentorship to collaborate and co-ordinate on encouraging production of and access to local content posted on Wikipedia.

  • I am busy translating this article about Jonathan Jansen. I'm a little surprised that I can’t get any translation assistance, though.

My Wikipedia History

edit

My first recorded contribution to Wikipedia was made 7 years ago, when I made a change to the mliteracy entry, but my first attempt to make a change was 18 years ago, when teachers at GHS told me about some anonymous vandal who’se version control statement felt like a schoolboy prank. I thought I corrected it, but perhaps I sent off an email.

Wikipedia and Libraries

edit

After joining WMSA for their AGM in 2023, I learned about their Wiki Loves SA library campaign. [2] I connected up with the wonderful peeps at Randburg Library, and we started a monthly Wikipedia meetup (led by Bobby and hosted by Matete). On 2023-12-11 I was inspired to create the Parkview Library page. After several speedy deletes, the Parkview Library page was finally published within the Parkview Suburb Page. I am pleased to have added an info box. I showed the article to Sissy and Portia and asked them to take over. I have been creating Wikipedia library pages for other people. My sister is in Cape Town, and she visits the Kloof Street Public Library. Writing library pages can be tricky. I have created a /library_draft. I have also helped a few other people out with their Wikipedia Library pages. Incluing the Weltevredenpark Public Library. I also think that we should be celebrating our public libraries and have created the following: Category:Public libraries in South Africa (Q134693442). Suitable Public Library Images can also be uploaded to the Commons. As a member of the FOTL in Parkview, I would like to try to create a full Parkview Article. I also intend to contribute to Public library advocacy

Wikipedia and Academic Infrastructures

edit

I finished up a short DH-OER project and noticed that the organizational sponsor, SADILaR, was not on Wikipedia. I knew that they would be doing Wikipedia workshops, so on 2024-02-12, I authored the following piece, which was viewed and approved by Menno. Since this article was published, a number of translations have been made.

I was invited to a job interview with Higher_health, and so I decided to find out about them before the interview. I then shared the article with them afterwards. I did not get the job (and neither did I receive thanks in the article). I gifted Nico with the piece when he was appointed, and he gave it a thumbs-up sign on LinkedIn.

I began an attempt to write an article about the Gauteng Research Triangle (GRT), a research collaborative in Gauteng between the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, and the University of the Witwatersrand. The article was in my Sandbox and was speedily deleted. It seems as if no one in my circle has heard of the Gauteng Research Triangle. Perhaps I am seeing a "politics and power struggle inside Wikipedia". I probably began at the wrong point. Subsequently I have written about the South African Population Research Infrastructure Network (SAPRIN) and the Gauteng Research Triangle is one of these nodes.

A group that appeared on my horizon quite recently was USAf, a body with noble intentions that seems to be fraught with internal challenges. There can be no doubt about the importance of strong and effective universities. But knowledge has also to be open (not outsourced) and Whistleblowers need protection.

Wikipedia and Journalism

edit

When my " pay as you go" data ran out, I was looking through the “free” options. I there discovered, to my surprise, that South Africa has a state owned newspaper called Vuk’uzenzele. It’s only us big city folk who don’t know about it though. Most people out of the big smoke know all about it.

After completing a series of workshops for a client I visited MZUZU university and met the director. I composed this piece and sent it back to her for approval, its about ODeL at MZUNI.

Water supply in Johannesburg has also become erratic. I have authored an article about water and corruption in the sector. We recently had a major maintenance period. I wrote about the event leading up to it Emergency Water supply. Both Anthony and Mary approved

Wikipedia and Ed tech

Paul asked me to take a look at a feedback and tutor service called Studiosity With all the fuss about Ai and education, I created an article about the topic[3]

Wikipedia and Heritage

edit

I have been interested in Joburg Heritage ever since visiting Northwards , one of the Parktown mansionas located 21 Rockridge Road. Been meaning to chat with them, and after a meeting with Denise in Clarens, I contacted JHA chair. Thought I would write an article about the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation

Wikipedia and mLiteracy

edit

I have completed the article about Social Impact Publishing or community publishing. The Template:SIP_Library can be added to the a suitable page as a transclusion. This means that more children's reading books can be accessed. Spoke to Dorcas about the article and she approves. Bookdash has gone live and Zanri seems to think that it is alright (apart from some branding issues) I'm glad that Vula Bula is back. I think it would be great to extend this to Jenny's new project /Halala and also to /Nali Bali

I was recently asked by Ravi to assist with putting his Wikipedia profile online. Before we did this, I decided to get an idea of the environment and created a table

  • I have made changes to the introduction of the South African University Rankings site pointing out criticism of of rankings. I would like to get Sioux's perspective, but she has not replied yet. Received a reply from Philip.
  • I saw the TEAL classroom in action when I visited Boston for a MOOC training in 2014. Thought I would update their TEAL page.
