Inclusion of Greek letter names

edit

In 2020, the WMO retired Eta and Iota from the hurricane naming lists and announced that it would end the use of the Greek alphabet. Hurricanes Delta and Zeta affected the United States and Mexico dealt enough damage for their names to be retired, but they were not retired. Should hurricanes with Greek letters be included as unofficially retired names? 24.191.232.15 (talk) 23:43, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

My personal opinion is that we shouldn't include them as unofficially retired names, since they were just removed from the naming lists and not retired by the hurricane committee who could in theory bring them back at anytime.Jason Rees (talk) 14:15, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
It has been a few years since the removal of the Greek alphabet names, and I think the names should be listed there with a footnote indicating the storm was part of the Greek naming list that was removed after the 2020 season. SerenityRune (talk) 01:11, 12 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Only Eta and Iota were officially retired. Yes, the Greek alphabet was also retired from usage, but that should get a mention in History of tropical cyclone naming, not get a mention on a template linking all retired storms. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:41, 12 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
