"Category" parameter
editWhat should this represent? It says "Broad group it falls into". I checked most first-level subdvisions of countries (Administrative regions of Greece, Emirates of the United Arab Emirates, Regions of France), and this shows either "Unitary" or "federal", and similar. At that level of the "pyramid", shouldn't that be whatever the name of the subdivision is? Or "unitary"/"federal" is correct? Howard the Duck (talk) 18:10, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
Shouldn't 'number_date' render as "since"
editShouldn't 'number_date' render as "since" rather than "as of"? The latter suggests that we lack current info. Nurg (talk) 03:16, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
Status
editI'd like to suggest that the "Possible status" label is changed to "Optional status", as that is a better description for what the documentation says this parameter is for. This provides better contrast with "Possible type", as I think that types (if they exist) aren't optional. I think the intention of this template is that every subdivision should have one of the listed types (unless there are none), but a subdivision may or may not have one or more of the listed statuses. Is my understanding correct? Dr Greg talk 10:54, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thinking further about this, I also propose to simplify "Possible types" to "Types", providing even greater contrast. Dr Greg talk 12:20, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
native_name parameter missing
editThis template should have a native name parameter for subdivisions outside English-speaking countries.
alt_name is not suited well for this because it produces the extra text "also known as".
For now some pages use a hacky line break in the name field e.g. at States of Austria:
name = States of Austria<br />{{native name|de|Österreichs Bundesländer}} Joe vom Titan (talk) 21:20, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
| States of Austria Österreichs Bundesländer (German) | |
|---|---|
| Category | Federated state |
| Location | Republic of Austria |
| Government | |
| Subdivisions | |
The infobox for federal subjects of Russia is a good example of how to best format a native name:
| Federal subjects Субъекты федерации (Russian) | |
|---|---|
Diagonal stripes indicate territory internationally recognized as parts of Ukraine. | |
| Category | Federal semi-presidential constitutional republic |
| Location | |
| Created |
|
| Number | 83 |
| Populations | 41,431 (Nenets Autonomous Okrug) – 13,010,112 (Moscow) |
| Areas | 864 km2 (334 sq mi) (Sevastopol) – 3,103,200 km2 (1,198,200 sq mi) (Sakha Republic) |
| Government |
|
| Subdivisions | |
This is done with the line break hack too and by turning off bold. Instead the template should take care of the formatting. This could be achieved with native_name and native_name_language parameters.
