Talk:Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine

Latest comment: 1 month ago by Amakuru in topic Title or sentence case?

'Tserkva', really?

edit

So weird. This is just the word for 'church' in Ukrainian. Why not just call it a 'church' in English? As far as I can see, Polish seems to be the only language that uses a similar (but not identical!) word specifically to distinguish an Orthodox church from a Catholic one (cerkiew, as opposed to a Catholic kościół). I get that UNESCO uses the word, but do most reliable sources do so, too? 62.73.72.3 (talk) 19:43, 13 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Ukrainian also makes the distinction between церква and костьол/костел. This article is specifically about the World Heritage Site (not wooden churches of the Carpathians in general), so the usage of the official phrasing makes sense to me. Shwabb1taco 08:41, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Holy Spirit Church in Huklyvyi

edit

I suppose the Holy Spirit Church in Huklyvyi (mentioned in Huklyv Chronicle) is not inscribed in the UNESCO register? NLeeuw (talk) 18:24, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

It is not. All inscribed Lemko-style churches are located in Poland (Brunary, Kwiatoń, Owczary, Powroźnik, Turzańsk). Shwabb1taco 23:17, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Title or sentence case?

edit

Hey @Amakuru, sorry for pinging but I noticed that you've changed the title of this article from title case to sentence case on 9 March 2025 because the previous move was undiscussed. I've started reworking and expanding this page so I want to discuss which case fits better. As of now, I'm leaning towards using title case since this is a name of a World Heritage Site, which (as I understand) makes it a proper name. Similar pages use title case: Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe, Australian Convict Sites, The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier. Let me know what you think and if I'm missing something. Shwabb1taco 10:29, 4 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Seeing no response in over a month, I'll boldly move the page, though feel free to bring up any comments still. Shwabb1taco 09:28, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Shwabb1: I guess that's fine, we can leave it capitalised for now – the majority of soures do seem to do so anyway, so it's compliant with MOS:CAPS. Although if anybody else does object then it would still need to be reverted per WP:RMUM. Thanks for your work on this article.   Amakuru (talk) 20:20, 17 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
