Introduction: POV

edit

This above claims that Williams is "widely regarded" as one of the best players ever, but the sources quoted do not support that assertion. She *may be in the conversation, but there is no evidence cited that she is "widely regarded" as such. Seven Grand Slams is quite an achievement and places her in the top 20 in that category, but those seven were achieved at two events only. I will add a neutrality citation until this point is discussed by others. Regards Billsmith60 (talk) 12:21, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Certainly she is an all-time great in Doubles Billsmith60 (talk) 12:24, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

She is often referred to as being "widely regarded" as an all time great e.g.

Also, the fact that so many tennis experts/sites rank her in the top 10 female tennis players of all time, then i think the "widely regarded" claim is justified. There are 3 links already given in the introduction placing her inside the top 10 of all time. On top of this, the Tennis Channel rank her as the 8th best player of all time (see her legacy section). Numerous tennis/sports sites consistently rank her inside the top of all time 10 e.g.

Winning streak

edit

"Her 35-match winning streak from the 2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2000 Generali Ladies Linz final is the longest since 2000" is no longer correct. Swiatec has broken it with 36 (so far). 81.178.143.59 (talk) 19:27, 28 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Out of date introduction

edit

Below is the current text:

"She is also one of only two active players to have reached the singles finals of all four majors, along with Serena"

Serena is no longer active. Some other active players may have reached the singles finals of all four majors but am not 100%. (Fran Bosh (talk) 18:21, 2 February 2023 (UTC))Reply

To add to article

edit

Shouldn't we add to this article the fact that the Williams family lived in Long Beach, California for three years before Richard Williams decided to move his family to Compton (in order to help toughen up his daughters)? I have begun adding content from this article. Thanks for the suggestion. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 04:27, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Paul Cohen

edit

If Paul Cohen was one of Venus Williams's first coaches, shouldn't he be mentioned in this article, if only briefly (in order to help this article be more properly encyclopedic)? 98.123.38.211 (talk) 02:03, 27 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Siblings?

edit

Why is her early life section so... blank? For any Venus fans out there (or anyone who wants to), I'd recommend adding info about her siblings - I believe she has over 10, including Serena, which is definitely relevant to add. See Serena Williams's early life section for a good place to start. A lot of context as to why she started doing tennis etc is missing. jolielover♥talk 04:04, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have begun drawing relevant content from the Serena page and adding it to Venus' page. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 04:09, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Lead image

edit

Hello! I wanted to ask for input about this recent change to the lead image. The old image was replaced by Risedemise, and I believe they were acting in good faith. I am not immediately lobbying for a revert, but I do have a couple concerns about the change.

  1. Risedemise, the edit summary you gave is "replace unflattering infobox photo". While we must avoid images that disparage a living person, our job as editors is not to make that person "look good" just as it's not our job to make them look bad. Although I don't have tons of experience with this, I'm going to guess that we should not remove an image just because it is unflattering (which is also subjective).
  2. The old image showed Williams in her tennis garb, which I think is important given her profession. The image gives the reader an immediate confirmation that they've arrived at the right page, and it immediately tells us her profession. I'm concerned that the new image does not make her so immediately recognizable.

Again, I'm not pushing for an immediate revert to the old image. I just want to see what others have to say. Thanks. OrdinaryOtter(talk) 16:25, 25 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
