The current text states: "The Vanniyars were historically considered a lower caste... The Palli, along with the Paraiyar, were largely employed as agricultural labourers during British rule."

This is misleading and contradicted by earlier sources. Please add or amend to reflect the following:

According to Edgar Thurston's Castes and Tribes of Southern India (Vol. VI, 1909, Government Press Madras), the Vanniyar/Palli community historically claimed Kshatriya (warrior) status of the Agnikula lineage. Thurston records their titles as indicating "authority, bravery, and superiority," including Padaiyāchi (head of an army), and names associated with the Chola, Pallava, and Pandya dynasties. At the 1871 and 1891 censuses, community petitions to the government formally asserted their Kshatriya classification. ~2026-19340-88 (talk) 16:25, 29 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not done: Thurston is not a reliable source. See WP:RAJ for more information on why British-Raj era scholars are not trustworthy. InfernoHues (talk) 16:38, 29 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Request to revise and contextualize "Shudra" and "lower caste" wording

edit

The current article repeatedly uses terms such as "Shudra" and "lower caste" in a way that may give undue weight to older sociological classifications without sufficient historical context. I request editors to consider revising the wording to better reflect modern scholarship and neutrality per WP:NPOV. Modern historians such as Noboru Karashima and Y. Subbarayalu describe sections of the Palli/Vanniya community as martial groups, Chola military retainers, landholders and regional chiefs based on inscriptional evidence. At the same time, other sociological sources discuss peasant and agrarian status in later periods. Therefore, instead of presenting a singular caste classification, the article may be improved by using more balanced wording such as: "Some historians and sociologists historically classified the community within the broader Shudra fold of the South Indian varna framework, while medieval epigraphic scholarship also describes sections of the community as martial groups, landholders and local chiefs during the Chola period." Similarly, repeated use of the phrase "lower caste" without contextual qualification may not fully reflect the diversity of historical scholarship on the community. This request is not for removal of sourced content, but for balanced and contextually accurate representation. Dmullaivendhan (talk) 10:27, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Request to review inaccurate historical information

edit

Some information in this article about the Vanniyar community appears to be inaccurate, disputed, or incomplete. There are historical inscriptions, government records, and published references that present different details. Please review the article content and verify it with reliable academic and historical sources. Murugan tamil (talk) 07:16, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
