editI dont't think that name fits. The german name is Buchwissenschaft, which could be translated as book science. I just saw that the english version of the universities homepage calls it History of books, so I changed it to that.
Gutenberg award
editApparently, there is a "Gutenberg award" by the University; recipients are:
- Krzysztof_Matyjaszewski#Awards_and_honors (2010)
- Alex Zunger (2009)
- possibly Rudolf Hell
- possibly Michael_Grätzel#Recognition
- possibly Stuart_Parkin#Awards
- possibly Nicholas A. Kotov
This award should be mentioned here (what are the criteria for obtaining it etc.), and its recipients should be listed. However, there are also "Gutenberg awards" by several other organizations, so some caution is needed in collecting the names. - Jochen Burghardt (talk) 11:58, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

"One of the oldest and most prestigious unis"?
edit"Founded in 1477, it is one of the oldest universities in Europe and one of the most prestigious in Germany."
the source of Walter Rüegg should be removed IMO
1. the OLD uni was founded in 1477 and closed in 1798 by the french.
2. the NEW uni was founded in 1946 and is both de facto and de jure a separate institution which has nothing to do with the old university just like Erfurts, Colognes, and Triers new universities are new institutions that dont have anything to do with the older ones that were closed in 1816, 1798 (both cologne and Trier) respectively.
3. and only because the source says so and perhaps because it is a member of U15 doesnt mean it is one of the most prestigious. it was closed for 148 years and isnt that high on most ranking for german universities.
4. Uni Mainz is only here: Rank=452 Overall Score:34.2 Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz (source: https://www.topuniversities.com/world-university-rankings?region=Europe&countries=de) thats not bad either but its only on the 27th spot of the german unis. - The (unfortunately unsourced) History section had been deleted, I have reintroduced it. There is some degree of continuity between the old and new universities, and both are covered in this article (and so I have continued to mention the old university in the lead). I don't want to dispute your claim about rankings and prestige, which should certainly be backed up by better sources, and "one of the most prestigious in Germany" probably hasn't been strictly true for a couple hundred years. —Kusma (talk) 12:18, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
