Death of a workman

edit

The article has a brief mention of a workman falling to his death from the roof of the building. At the Help Desk there is now a request from the manager of the building, for the removal of this sentence. I support this request, not for the reasons given by the manager, but because the death is not sufficiently relevant to the subject. (In the city where I live, there are many notable historic buildings. It's likely that people have fallen to their deaths from many of them. But I would not want, or expect, to read about such deaths in the articles on the buildings, unless the victims were themselves notable.) Maproom (talk) 09:43, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I too support removing this content although the death of the roofer was terrible, especially for his family. Roofing is one of the most dangerous occupations and in a typical year, over 100 roofers are killed in falls in the United States. There seems to be no evidence that anything about this historic hotel itself contributed to the accident, and I do not think that this death deserves any more mention than a hotel guest dying in bed of a heart attack, which would be unsurprising though also sad. I consider mention of this death to be undue, especially given the hotel's long history. Cullen328 (talk) 10:01, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I restored this statement as a matter of process when a COI editor made a substantive change without discussion on the talk page. Although it is part of the historical record of this hotel that someone died while improving the property, I agree that it isn't a necessary detail. It's gone now. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 15:55, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

While it's already removed, I just want to state that I agree with the other comments here, and help add to the heft of the consensus. The roofer's death is not something that is strongly associated with the building in the same way that, say, the Las Vegas shooting in 2017 is association with Mandalay Bay. Tragic, but in the context of an article about The Jarrett House, it's just a little factoid or a bit of trivia. CoffeeCrumbs (talk) 15:41, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
