St Helier is not a capital
editThe following claim is made in the lead "and is the capital of the Island", however it has no source, and in reality Jersey has no designated capital. The island is simply divided into 12 parishes, that is all. Danrok (talk) 17:53, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
- St Helier the town is the capital, not St Helier the parish. The article is, I believe, about the parish, there is no article about the town as such. It could be clearer and there are plenty of places available to obtain a citation from newspapers. It is an interesting thought as the islanders do not refer to it as the "capital" its what outsiders ask, they think every country needs a capital....locals just call it St Helier or "town". Pronunciation
editCould a local please verify whether the pronunciation is correct? It seems surprising that "Saint" would be pronounced with a long E sound, as opposed to being pronounced like the word "saint" in either English or French. Maybe it's correct as is, but it seems unusual. Thanks. RCTodd (talk) 16:01, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
History omission
editI note under 20th century there is mention of the 50th anniversary of liberation from Nazi occupation but nothing about the 5 year long occupation itself. St Helier being an administrative centre of the island would surely have made it the seat of influential activity by the occupiers.Cloptonson (talk) 13:53, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
Saint or St or St.?
editIs this article at the right title? Most of the sources seem to use "St" or "St." rather than "Saint". WP:PLACE tells us " When a widely accepted English name, in a modern context, exists for a place, we should use it.", I suppose the question is which is the most "widely accepted" version. I'm not local or particularly involved in Jersey, though am from the UK, but saw the place name in an article which was on my watch list and wondered. I've also tweaked the hatnote to make it easier for people to find the saint. PamD 08:13, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
