Cihannuma doesn't say Malatya is Kurdish majority
editCihannuma (the "Book of Curiosities"), created by the famous Ottoman cartographer Piri Reis in the early 16th century, does not explicitly mention the ethnic composition of specific regions in the same way that modern historical or ethnographic works might. Its primary purpose was to map the known world during that period and offer insights into the geography, peoples, and significant places. Piri Reis was more focused on documenting the geography, trade routes, and important landmarks rather than offering in-depth commentary on ethnic groups.

- considering the historical context of Malatya in the 16th century, it is likely that the region had a diverse population. Malatya, located in central Turkey, has historically been home to various ethnic and cultural groups, including Turks, Kurds, Greeks and Armenians. In the Ottoman period, Kurds were one of the significant groups in the eastern and southeastern parts of the empire, which included Malatya.
- So, while Piri Reis does not directly address the Kurdish population in Malatya, it's accurate to say that Kurds were indeed present in the region, alongside other ethnic communities. However, Malatya was not exclusively Kurdish during the 16th century. The demographic makeup was likely more mixed, and over time, the population dynamics have evolved.there's no clear indication in Cihannüma that Malatya's population was predominantly Kurdish, but given the historical presence of Kurdish communities in the region, it’s reasonable to consider them part of the broader ethnic landscape of the time but not specifically the majority. - Also Cihannuma would refer to Malatya, as in Malatya of its time. not to current malatya province. 2 completely different things. Malatya included different parts of Eastern Anatolia at different times. Ziya99 (talk) 17:32, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
